Description

 la fig. I montre, vu de face, un cadran revêtu des signes selon l'invention;
 la fig. 2 représente une coupe partielle selon   Il-I I    de la fig. I;

  Sign for timepiece
 A wide variety of signs are used in timepieces. especially on watch faces.

   In the latter case, the signs can either come from manufacture with the dial (signs in relief), or be symbolized by a painted line or be added by welding, crimping, gluing.

   These signs can be coated with a luminescent layer so that they appear in the dark.

   However, the contrast between these light signs and their support is generally low. This is due in particular to the diffusion of the light emitted by the luminescent layer in a large solid angle.

   It has already been proposed to concentrate the light rays emitted by the luminescent material in a very limited area by housing the luminescent material in a metal housing, the walls of which act as reflectors.

   The invention proposes a more sinople and more aesthetic solution to achieve this goal. It relates to a sign for a timepiece, comprising a base of luminescent material surmounted by a block of transparent material, characterized in that the side walls of said block are free at least in their greatest part and alone ensure the total reflection of the light emitted by the luminescent material, this light emerging only through the upper face of said sign, so as to concentrate this light in a narrow beam and thereby make the observation of the sign easier.

   The invention will be better understood by referring to the appended drawing which represents, by way of example, several embodiments thereof and on which
 fig. I shows, seen from the front, a dial coated with the signs according to the invention;
 fig. 2 shows a partial section along II-I I of FIG. I;
 Figs. 3, 4 and 5 represent, in axial section, three variant embodiments of signs according to the invention.

   Referring first to Figs. I and 2, the dial (I) is pierced with an opening (2) in which a support (3) of the sign is crimped. The support is pierced and forms a housing (4) in which a luminescent material (5) is cast.

   The support (3) has a platform (6) on which rests a block (7) of transparent material. for example in plastic.

   In the example shown in FIGS. I and 2, the block (7) has the shape of a cylinder and is crimped by the four horns (8) manufactured with the support (3).

   The light rays emitted by the layer of luminescent material (5) are channeled in the direction of arrow 9 by the block (7).

   The index of the material constituting the block (7) as well as the dimensions of the latter and those of the luminescent layer (S) are chosen so that no ray emitted by this layer can pass through the side wall (10) block (7) but is reflected by it (total reflection) and can only emerge from the upper face (11) of said block.

     It follows a concentration of the light emitted by the layer (5) in a beam of small aperture in which the light has a correspondingly higher intensity, which allows the observer to more easily discern the sign of his. environment.

   Such a sign can thus be used as a time sign on a dial or as a mark carried by a bezel of the box. especially for scuba diving watches.

   Of course, the sign according to the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described and it is possible, for example, first of all to replace the cylindrical block (7) by a cubic block, parallelepipedal, hexagonal, etc. playing the same role. The upper surface (1 1) can also be bevelled or faceted.

   Although the material constituting the block (7) is preferably chosen without coloring, it is possible to imagine tinting it slightly for aesthetic purposes.

   Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show possible variant embodiments of the sign according to the invention.

   In fig. 3, the sign presents a cup (21) fixed by welding or by gluing on the dial (1). This cuvette is filled with a layer of luminescent material in the form of a pellet (51) covered with the block of transparent material (71) crimped between the edges of the cuvette.

   In fig. 4 the block (72) is purely and simply glued to the layer of luminescent material (52) itself applied directly to the dial (12).

   In fig. 5 the transparent block (73) has a housing at its base in which the luminescent material (52) is placed. The block (73) is applied directly to the support (13) of the sign.

   Of course, the sign according to the invention can just as easily be applied to other figurative elements of the watch. for example for making needles or the like.
