EMI1.1

Process for the production of azo dyes
The purpose of the invention are metal-containing disazo dyes, which are particularly suitable for dyeing paper. The subject of the invention is thus a process for the preparation of metal-containing disazo dyes of the formula
EMI1.1
where Me denotes a metal atom and the rings A and / or B can be further substituted.
The dyes of the formula (I) are mainly in the form of their alkali metal salts or their ammonium salts, but preferably as the sodium salt.
The metal atom is preferably a copper atom; however, it can also stand for a nickel atom.
The dyes of the formula (I) can be prepared if 1 mol of a tetrazotized 4,4'-diasnino-3,3'imethoxy- or 3,3'-dihydroxydiphenyls with 1 mol of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6,8-disulfonic acid and 1 mole coupling and the resulting azo dye treated with a metal donor.
The coupling can be carried out by methods known per se, e.g. B. in an aqueous alkaline medium, at temperatures of 0-20 C and optionally in the presence of a buffer.
The metallization can also be carried out by methods known per se, e.g. B. in an aqueous acidic or alkaline medium and, for example, at elevated temperature, e.g. B. at cooking temperature.
The aromatic rings A and / or B can be further substituted by halogen, such as chlorine, bromine or fluorine, or by alkyl or alkoxy radicals, for example by low molecular weight alkyl or alkoxy radicals containing, for. B. 1-3 carbon atoms.
However, these rings are advantageously unsubstituted.
It is advantageous to metallize with a copper- or nickel-releasing agent, for example with copper sulfate, chloride or acetate.
The new dyes are suitable for dyeing paper or for dyeing or printing cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen, hemp, etc.
according to the usual methods, e.g. B. according to French patent specification 1 551 512.
The dyes of the formula (I) are particularly suitable for the production of pulp-dyed, sized or unsized paper.
With the dyes of the formula (I), genuine, level, reddish blue dyeings with good fastness properties are obtained on the substrates mentioned, e.g. B. good light fastness and good wet fastness properties. From French patent 1 016 771 the dye is of the formula

or its sodium salts are known for dyeing regenerated cellulose. The dye of formula (a) is recommended commercially for dyeing paper.
It is surprising that the dyes of the formula (I) are more soluble in water, i. H. they can be used to produce more concentrated aqueous solutions.
In addition, the dyes of the formula (I) are better suited for shading white papers and less sensitive to sizing than the dye of the formula (a) and, in addition, when dyeing paper with the dyes of the formula (I) there is no risk of mottling at all the dye of formula (a) mottled on paper. Whitening is mainly described by Berthold Cornely in Das Färben von Papier, page 185.
In the following examples, the parts are parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.

EMI2.2
1. Tetrazotization
97.6 parts of 4,4'-diamino-3'3'-dimethoxy-1 1'-diphenyl are introduced into 800 parts of 20 water. Then 276 parts of the above hydrochloric acid are added and the mixture is stirred to form a homogeneous suspension. The mixture is then cooled to 2-3 by adding 350 parts of ice. A solution consisting of 58 parts of sodium nitrite dissolved in 300 parts of water is now allowed to flow in over the course of 30 minutes. The temperature is kept between 3-5 by the occasional addition of ice.
The mixture is stirred for 3 hours at this temperature, then the excess sodium nitrite is destroyed with sulfamic acid.
2. Coupling
126 parts of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6,8-disulfonic acid are introduced into 500 parts of water and then dissolved by adding 66.5 parts of the above sodium hydroxide solution. After 220 parts of soda have been introduced, the mixture is cooled to 3-5 "and the tetrazotized 4,4'-diamino-3,3'-dimethoxy-1,1'-diphenyl is then poured in in a thin stream. The mixture is stirred well for 90 minutes then adds 135 parts of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulphonic acid, dissolved in 900 parts of water. When the reaction is complete, 240 parts of crystallized copper sulphate and 364 parts of 25% ammonia are added and the mixture is stirred at 90-95 "for 15-20 hours .
The metallized dye is precipitated by adding sodium chloride and isolated by filtration. After drying, 440 parts of the dye of the formula (b) are obtained. Paper that has been colored with the above dye has a reddish blue shade of medium intensity. The dyeing has good fastness properties, such as fastness to alcohol; in particular, it is very wet strength.
