Process for the preparation of metal-containing azo dyes It has been found that new valuable metal-containing azo dyes are obtained if the diazonium compounds are obtained from amines of the formula
EMI0001.0005
where R is hydrogen, a nitro, alkyl or carboxylic acid group or a halogen atom, with 1,3-dioxy-benzene or with a 1,
3-Dioxy-benzene-carboxylic acid is coupled and the azo dyes obtained are treated with metal donating agents. The coupling of the diazonium compounds with 1,3-dioxybenzene or 1,3-dioxybenzene carboxylic acid is advantageously carried out in an alkaline medium.
The azo dyes can be converted into their metal complex compounds in the usual way by treatment with chromium, copper, cobalt or nickel compounds.
The new dyes are particularly suitable for dyeing leather, dyeings of good fastness properties, in particular very good light fastness, being obtained.
Example 1 21.7 parts by weight of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid are diazotized in the usual way and treated with a solution of 11 parts by weight of 1,3-dioxy-benzene in 40 parts by volume of water and 40 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution combined. The red dye pulp formed is acidified with glacial acetic acid and mixed with 28 parts by weight of crystalline sodium acetate.
The mixture is then heated and, after the addition of 50 parts by weight of chrome alum, the temperature is kept at 90-95 ° C. until the chromation has ended. The dye deposited from the solution is a brown powder that dyes leather in red-brown shades of very good lightfastness.
If, in the above example, 1-aminobenzene-2-carboxylic acid-4-sulfonic acid is used instead of 1-aminobenzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid, a dye is obtained which dyes leather in red-brown shades of very good lightfastness .
Example 2 21.7 parts by weight of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid are diazotized in the usual way and treated with a solution of 5.5 parts by weight of 1,3-dioxy- benzene combined in 40 parts by volume of water and 40 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution.
After the coupling has ended, the mixture is acidified with glacial acetic acid, ver with 42 parts by weight of crystalline sodium acetate, heated and the temperature is kept at 90-95 ° C. after the addition of 50 parts by weight of chrome alum until the chromation is complete. The dye deposited from the solution is a brown powder which dyes leather in red-brown shades of very good lightfastness.
If, in the above example, 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-4-sulfonic acid is used instead of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid, then one obtains a dye that has red-brown tones of leather good lightfastness. Example 3 21.7 parts by weight of 1-aminobenzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid are diazotized in the usual way and with an alkaline sodium solution of 15.4 parts by weight of 1,3-dioxy -benzene-4-carboxylic acid united ver.
After the coupling is complete, the mixture is acidified with glacial acetic acid, an aqueous solution of 25 parts by weight of chromium acetate containing 5.2 parts by weight of chromium is added and the mixture is heated to 90-95 ° C. until the chromation is complete. The dye deposited from the solution is a brown powder which dyes leather in red-brown shades of very good lightfastness.
If, in the above example, 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-4-sulfonic acid is used instead of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulphonic acid, a dye is obtained which leather in red-brown shades dyes of very good lightfastness.
Example 4 21.7 parts by weight of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid are diazotized in the customary manner and with an alkaline sodium solution of 7.7 parts by weight of 1,3-dioxy -benzene-4-carboxylic acid combined. After the coupling has ended, the mixture is acidified with glacial acetic acid, an aqueous solution of 25 parts by weight of chromium acetate containing 5.2 parts by weight of chromium is added and the mixture is heated to 90-95 ° C. until the chromation is complete.
The dye deposited from the solution is a brown powder which dyes leather in red-brown shades of very good lightfastness. If, in the above example, 1-aminobenzene-2-carboxylic acid-4-sulfonic acid is used instead of 1-amino-benzene-2-carboxylic acid-5-sulfonic acid, then one obtains a dye that gives leather in red-brown tones of very good quality Color fastness to light.
Instead of the chromium salts used in the preceding examples, the corresponding amount of a copper, cobalt or nickel salt can also be used. Dyes are then obtained which dye leather in yellow-brown shades of very good light fastness.
