Comme montré en fig. 9, la vis 141 comporte un épaulement 144 ainsi qu!une- bague 145 qui est vissée sur elleà une certaine distancede celui-ci de manière que cette vis soit retenue dans un alésage, 146 us-iné dans le prolongement latéral 114 de la console110 ;
Le chariot156 comporte lui-même une glissière en queue d'aronde 157 qui, comme montré en fig. 1, est montéeà an- gle droit par rapportà la glissière155. Comme mon tré en fig. 10, dans la glissière157 sont montés deux coulisseaux158 et159 comportant des alésages taraudés160 et161. L'alésage160 est filetéà un pas inverse de celui de l'alésage161 ;
Method and machine for sharpening twist drills The present patent includes a method and machine for sharpening twist drills.
It is desirable for the tip of the drill bits to act as a pilot to center the drill at the point where the hole is to be drilled in the metal. Conventional drills are not satisfactory in in this regard because they have a chisel-shaped edge at the end which cannot ensure centering and guidance, since it has the shape of a rec tilinear edge perpendicular to the axis of the drill. A more satisfactory form of drill bit is that having at the end a self-centering device or pilot device, but the drill must, in addition, be such that its shape can be generated during the grinding intended to < / B> sharpen the main cutting edges, without requiring a separate operation.
The present patent aims to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks.
To this end, the method which is the subject of one of the inventions is characterized in that one moves, one relative to the other, the working face of the grinding wheel and the face of end of the drill while they are in contact, in a conical spiral, and in that the parts are held at a relative position such that the successive useful generating linear elements of the working face of the grinding wheel constitute a generator which, under the effect of the above-mentioned spiral movement, determined the conformation of the end face of the drill.
The machine, object of the other invention, for the implementation of the above method, comprising a base, a device suitable to maintain the drill and support devices of a grinding wheel on the base allowing movements of the grinding wheel relative to the device able to to hold the drill bit, is characterized by the fact that the grinding wheel support devices comprise a rotating spindle on which the grinding wheel is mounted, a wheel holder carrying said spindle and itself capable of rotating around an axis parallel to that of the wheel, but eccentric with respect to to the latter,
a support mechanism able to support the wheel holder on the base allowing it to move laterally and longitudinally with respect to to the axis of the grinding wheel and parallel therewith , and means for imparting simultaneously to the grinding wheel holder a rotational movement, an axial movement and a lateral movement.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, to by way of example, a machine for carrying out the claimed process.

Fig. 17 is a diagram of the positions of the grinding wheel in its cycle of movement with respect to the drill held at a fixed position.
Figs. 18, 19 and 20 represent different instantaneous positions of the wheel during its cycle of motion around the drill bit.
Figs. 21, 22 and 23 show, schematically, various arrangements of the drill with respect to the grinding tool.
Since the entire end surface of a twist drill, y including the cutting edges, constitutes the part of the drill that provides the cut, this entire end surface can be referred to as the cutting face of the drill. forest.
Considered in a general way, the method which will be described in detail comprises the positioning of the axis of the drill in a plane enclosing the axis of a grinding wheel, at an angle of appropriate orientation by rapt port to the working face of this grinding wheel, and then the realization of a three-dimensional relative movement between said faces following a path practically in the form of a conical spiral.
This can be done in various ways ; for example, as shown to in fig. 21, one can use a wheel 25 of conical shape and the axis 26 of the drill can be arranged in a radial plane closing the axis 27 of the grinding wheel, at an acute angle to to the working face of the latter ; the axis 26 of the drill bit can still be oriented perpendicularly to the axis 27 of the grinding wheel 25 at an acute angle to to the working face of the latter, as represented to in fig. 22.
The axis 26 of the drill can also be arranged at an acute angle to to the working face of a cyhndric grinding wheel 28 (fig. 23), this axis 26 being, on the other hand, arranged in a radial plane passing through the axis 27 of the grinding wheel. In all the above cases, the axis of the drill is thus located in a radial plane enclosing the axis of the grinding wheel and it forms a certain angle with respect to to the working face or grinding face of the latter. , it being understood that this angle varies according to the angle presented by the working face of the grinding wheel.
The line of intersection of the aforementioned radial plane with the periphery of the grinding wheel has been indicated by AB in FIGS. 21 to 23; this line constitutes one of the air-generating elements on the face of the grinding wheel ; this line stops on an edge of the grinding wheel presenting a small rounding, as indicated in B. The above-mentioned linear element AB intersects on the edge a reference axis GG at a certain angle. This reference axis is always parallel to the axis of the drill.
When the parts have thus been arranged in accordance with to the first phase of the process, the three-dimensional generation movement is carried out by moving the totality of one face with respect to the other, for example by moving one of the parts towards the other, as indicated by the arrow F in fig. 21 to 23, and simultaneously performing a second movement in the transverse direction with respect to the first, in accordance with to arrow L, which has the effect of determine a resulting motion oriented parallel to the linear generator element AB. If it is the grinding wheel which carries out the movement, it y takes place to reverse the direction of the arrows in relation to to that shown.
In addition to the movement composed above, we simultaneously perform a rotation movement between the grinding wheel and the drill in order to move the generator element on the end face #f of the drill by performing a three-dimensional grinding. This last movement is achieved by moving the grinding wheel around the drill bit, or by moving the drill bit around the grinding wheel, or simply by rotating the drill itself on its own axis. The compound linear motion and the rotational motion are performed simultaneously, resulting in a stroke, hairspring-shaped, stroke. conical, this operation being repeated for each of the cutting lips to sharpen to the end of the drill.
The sharpening cycle of each of the sharp lips of the drill must be started at the desired point in relation to the lip in question, in way < B> to that we first grind part of the tip of the bit before attacking the lip.
This is achieved by theoretically arranging the linear element of the wheel practically halfway instead of the groove of the drill. At the same time, the useful linear element AB goes beyond the center of the drill, as shown in fig. 18. In this way, as the useful linear element sweeps the grooved part towards the lip, the only tip of the drill is ground.
The rotational movement and the lateral movement L of fig. 21 to 23 continuing, the grinding wheel releases the tip of the drill, as necessary so that the axial relative displacement F intended to ensure the grinding of the lip does not cause the disappearance of the tip, but on the contrary lets de- pass it. After a predetermined angle of rotation, sufficient to ensure the grinding of the cutting lip, the parts are separated and they are put back in position to grind the next lip.
Figs. 17, 18, 19 and 20 are views showing the sharpening of a twist drill 29. In these views, the axes of the drill and of the grinding wheel are parallel, in accordance to the arrangement shown to in fig. 21. The axis of rotation of the grinding wheel around the stationary drill has been indicated in GG. The construction of the machine is such that this axis comprises all the movements described above; we can therefore consider in these figs. 17, 18, 19 and 20 that it is this axis that moves relative to the stationary drill.
It is evident that the first contact between the drill and the grinding wheel takes place at the highest axial point of the cutting face of the drill, as shown in fig. 18, because the grinding wheel then moves axially in the direction of the drill, as shown by the succession of figs. 19 and 20. It is therefore necessary to choose on the cutting face of the drill a starting line representing the highest point to grind, and to ensure that the grinding wheel is placed so that it contacts this starting line at the instant it begins at </ B> grind.
For the present explanations, the drill is held stationary by being blocked in a device which the mahine presents. Thus, all movements are assigned to the grinding wheel. There is shown in FIG. 17 some of the positions of the grinding wheel as it moves around the bit in this way, while Figs. 18, 19 and 20 represent instantaneous positions of this wheel.
If we consider all of FIGS. 17 and 18, fig. 18 represents the grinding wheel as it just happens to touch the bit, that is, when it just begins to grind. In fig. 17, the corresponding position of the wheel 25 has been indicated in 18a- l8a. Line 30 represents the position of the useful linear element AB on the grinding wheel ; it will be noted that this line is located above the central part of the groove 40 of the drill.
The grinding wheel then moves in its orbit in a clockwise direction to reach at position l9a - </ I > l9a shown in fig. 17; it moves simultaneously in the axial direction, as shown by the arrow 31 in fig. 18, and in a lateral direction, as indicated by the arrow 32 (fig. 18), these various displacements having the effect of bringing this grinding wheel at the position shown in fig. 19.
The grinding wheel continues to to move towards position 20a - 20a of in fig. 17 while continuing, always in the same direction, its movement in the axial direction and in the lateral direction, which brings it to the position shown in fig. 20. This completes the grinding of the area 33 which separates the cutting lip 34 from the curved edge 35 of the following groove 36. The procedure is repeated same operating cycle - to grind the 37 zone between. the following cutting lip 38 and the curved edge 39 of the following groove 40.
However, before repeating the cycle to grind zone 37, it is necessary to quickly reverse the wheel and move it laterally and axially in the opposite direction while it continues to move, until bring it, relative to the drill, to the same position as that shown in fig. 18, but with an offset of 180.1 from to this one.
The grinding will therefore now begin on line 41 shown in FIG. 17. The grinding wheel is then at position l8b - 18b and continues its movement until the position l9b - l9b to finalize the grinding by reaching at position 20b - 20b. We then carry out a second rapid withdrawal movement as the wheel finishes its travel to green r at the starting position l8a - 18a.
The axis 26 of the drill, perpendicular to the plane of fig. 17, is indicated in this by two straight lines 26a and 26b which intersect at right angles on the axis 26 < / B> of the drill. In reality, the axis G of the grinding wheel moves - back and forth along line 26a between points Gl and G2 while remaining perpendicular to this line. Thus, when the G axis deviates from the axis of the drill along line 26a, one of the of cutting lips is automatically moved Here, it being recalled that there is simultaneously an axial movement perpendicular to the plane of the drawing.
A at the end of the grinding phase, the G axis is quickly brought back to the other side of the drill axis and the other cutting lip is sharp. During one complete revolution, each lip is automatically ground and the operating cycle repeats itself. Means make it possible to advance the drill axially towards the grinding wheel independently in order to ensure the removal of the quantity of material necessary to cut and sharpen the drill.
An advantageous embodiment of a machine for carrying out the process described above will now be described below. If we refer to fig. 2, a 25 conical shaped grinding wheel is mounted in a 50 chuck attached to the end of a 51 spindle . This spindle is carried by bearings 52 in a wheel holder 53. The rear end of the spindle 51 is provided with a drive pinion 54 which meshes with an inner ring 55. The wheel holder 53 is mounted to rotation, by the 'intermediate bearings 56, in a support 57.
It is essential to note that the spindle 51 is mounted eccentrically in the grinding wheel holder 53, this eccentric , indicated in 58 to in fig. 2, being preferably equal to the radius of the grinding wheel 25, as indicated in 59. It is understood that thus the periphery of the grinding wheel always passes through the axis of rotation of the holder - wheel 53, axis which corresponds to the reference axis GG.
The grinding wheel holder is secured to a 60 driving toothing which meshes with a 61 pinion mounted at the end of a tree 62, this tree being carried by windings 63 in the support 57. We understand that if the support 57 < / B> was held stationary and that the grinder holder was rotated c 53, the latter would move the entire grinding wheel 25 along a circumference around the axis of rotation 64 of the wheel holder, and that during this rotation the periphery of the wheel 25 would always pass through the axis 64 or would be tangent to this axis.
As shown in fig. 2, the . drill bit 29 is fixed in a device 65, in such a way that the axis 26 of this drill is parallel to axis of rotation 67 of the spindle 51 and of the grinding wheel 25. We see thus that if the axis of rotation 64 of the wheel holder 53 is aligned with the axis 26 of the drill, the rotation of the wheel holder moves, the wheel 25 following an orbit around the axis of the drill bit, which orbit in this case is constituted by a circumference.
The grinding wheel must be able to move axially as well as laterally and, therefore, the support 57 is, at in turn, mounted so to be able to move in two directions, perpendicular to one to the other.
As shown in fig. 4, the 57 com bracket carries downward facing bosses, one of which, 68, is disposed on one side of the axis < B> of rotation 64 of the wheel holder, while the other two, 69 and 70, are arranged on the other side of </ B > this axis, as shown in fig. 3. Note that these bosses constitute three support points for the support 57. The boss 68 has a bore 71 in which is passed a guide 72 fixed to a secondary support 73. Similarly,
the bosses 69 and 70 have bores through which they are mounted on a guide rod 74 which is also fixed to the secondary support 73. </ B> It will be noted that there is sufficient space between the bosses and the support to be condaire to allow the support 57 to slide longitudinally. A spring 75 is interposed between the boss 70 and a ring 76 pinned at 77 on the rod 74. The spring 75 exerts a constant stress in a direction specific to causing the axial recoil of the wheel 25 with respect to the drill 29, as shown in fig. 2.
The secondary support 73 also has three bosses 78, 79 and 80 drilled with suitable bores in such a way that the bosses < B> 78 and 79 are mounted to sliding on a rod 81, tan say that the boss 80 < / B> is, for its part, guided on a rod 82. The guide rods 81 and 82 are fixed to the base 83 of the machine.
A spring 84 is interposed between the boss 78 and a ring 85 fixed on the rod 81, for example by by means of a pin 86. Thanks to this arrangement, the spring 84 continually requests the secondary support 73 and the grinding wheel that it carries in a direction corresponding to the distance of the grinding wheel from the drill 29 in a horizontal plane, that is to say in the plan of in fig. 2.
We now understand that the grinding wheel 25 is thus supported so as to receive three different movements, to namely a movement around the drill 29 by the action of the rotating grinding wheel holder 53, an axial movement and a lateral movement with respect to to this same drill 29 < / B> thanks to the 57 support capable of sliding in two directions.
The driving mechanism for to rotate the wheel holder 53 and the wheel 25 includes a motor 87 (fig. 2) mounted on the mobile support 57 and whose output shaft 88 is coupled with a shaft 89 carried by bearings in said support 57. The shaft 89 carries a pinion 90 which meshes with a toothed wheel 91. The latter is part of a reducer shown in fig. 4.
As shown in this figure, the wheel 91 is carried by a shaft end 92 which also carries a toothed wheel 93 integral with this wheel 91, this wheel 93 meshing at in turn with a big wheel 94 mounted madly on the shaft 62, </ B> as shown in fig. 2.
The wheel 94 is connected by clutch teeth 95 to a movable clutch 96 keyed to sliding key in < B> 97 on the shaft 62. A spring 98 is interposed between the clutch 96 (see fig. 6 and 7) and a washer 99 attached to the shaft 62, this in view of maintaining said dog clutch in engagement with the wheel 94. The clutch 96 can be released by a control fork 100. The shaft 89 carries, also attached to it, the inner crown 55 which constitutes the drive member of the grinding wheel.
The 87 motor therefore directly drives the shaft 89 and the ring gear 55, in order to achieve the rotation at high speed of the grinding wheel, but it drives the pinion 6 1 through the gearbox 91, 93 and 94, so to rotate the wheel holder 53 at a relatively slow speed.
The rear end of the wheel holder 53 is for view of a # th cam 101 which is fixed to it by screws 102. It will be noted, in fig. 3, that the spring 75 acts to urge the cam 101 towards the right of fig. 2 and that the spring 84 acts from its side to urge said cam 101 towards the bottom of said FIG. 2.
The axial movement of the wheel holder 53 is stopped by a roller 103 which bears against a lateral ramp 104 of the cam 101. The lateral movement of this wheel holder 53 is stopped, for its part, by another roller 105 which bears against the periphery 106 of the said cam < B> 101.
It is essential to note that the rollers 103 and 105 are kept stationary during the operation of the machine ; < / B> therefore, if we consider fig. 2, any lateral protrusion on the ramp 104 causes an axial displacement of the grinding wheel 25 in the direction of the drill 29 and, likewise, any protrusion radial on the periphery 106 causes a displacement of the wheel 25, laterally with respect to to the axis, of the forest. The roller 105 is carried to rotation at the end of a lever 136 articulated on a stud 107 placed in the support 57 (fig. 4).
The 136 lever has a bearing surface 108 which is in contact with an adjustable support roller 109. The 109 roller is mounted in a 110 console guided in 111 and 11 2 on a vertical guide rod 113 </ B> attached to the machine base.
As shown in fig. 1, the 110 com console carries a lateral extension 114 which, as can be seen in fig. 9, is drilled with a tapped hole 115 into which is screwed a vertical adjustment screw 116. The screw 116 < / B> crosses the upper face of the fixed housing 117 of the machine and comprises a part 118 of reduced diameter on which is mounted a bearing to </ B > rim 119. This pad is held in position by a circular plate 120 fixed to the housing by screws 121.
The reduced diameter part 118 also comprises a splined end 122, with fine toothing, on which is mounted in groutly a pinion 123 integral with an elongated hub which abuts against the end of a control handwheel 124 also mounted on said part 118. An end screw 125 is screwed at the end of the screw 116, its head overlapping the flywheel 124 to hold the parts in place on said screw 116. The flywheel 124 carries a hand control button 126. When turning the steering wheel 124 by the button 126, the pinion 123 and the latter are driven by means of a pinion mounted idle 127 (fig. 8),
turns two toothed wheels coupled 128 and 129 mounted on a stud 130 fixed to the plate 120. The wheel 129 meshes with an internal toothing 131 of large diameter cut in the internal wall of a dial 132. It is understood that the above-described mechanism constitutes a reducer of connection between the screw 116 and the dial 132, in such a way that it is necessary to impart to the screw a large number of turns to rotate the 132 dial by a single turn.
In fact, the reduction is sufficient so that the screw 116 can be turned the number of revolutions required to move the support roller 109 over its entire useful stroke in carrying out only one revolution of the wheel 132. The purpose of this adjustment mechanism is to vary the lateral displacement stroke of the grinding wheel produced by the periphery 106 of cam 101; it is thus possible to adjust the lateral movement according to the diameter of the drill to to be sharpened. The settings for the different drill diameters can therefore be indicated by bringing these diameters to one after the other in depressions 133 on the side of the dial 132 , as shown in fig. 8.
Considering fig. 4, the action of the adjustment mechanism will be better understood if we remember that the spring 84 of FIG. 3 acts continuously on the support 57 to push back the stud 107 and the periphery 106 of the cam 101 against the two ends of the lever 136, this action being finally supported by the roller 109. Consequently, when 'a projection of the periphery 106 acts on the roller 105 and tends to move it to the right in fig. 4,
this has the effect of rotating the lever 136 on the roller 109 and moving the pin 107 towards the left, thus causing the displacement of the support 57. The displacement of the bearing point of the roller 109 actually modifies the length of the lever 134 with respect to to that of the lever arm 135, which is practically constant. Therefore, by extending or shortening the lever arm 134, one can adjust the lateral displacement of the support 57 for a determined increase in radius of the cam. As the cam 101 makes a complete revolution regardless of the diameter of the drill, if the lateral displacement of the grinding wheel is modified, its die - </ must also be modified correspondingly. B> axial placement.
Therefore, the roller 103 of Figs. 1 and 2, which comes into contact with the lateral ramp 104 of the cam 101, is also carried by an adjustment mechanism. If we consider fig. 1, the roller 103 is mounted at the end of a support lever 136 ', itself arti - abutment on a stud 137 carried by the support 57. The lever 136 ' has a bearing surface < B> 138 which abuts against a support roller 139. The support roller is mounted to rotation in a console 140, movable vertically, and in which is screwed in a screw 141.
The console 140 is secured to a lug 141 '(fig. 2) in which is hollowed a groove 142 suitable to receive a stud 143 carried by the console 110. This arrangement einpêche the console 140 die turn on screw 141.
As shown in fig. 9, the screw 141 has a shoulder 144 as well as! A ring 145 which is screwed on it at a certain distance from it so that this screw is retained in a bore, 146 us-iné in the lateral extension 114 of the console 110;
when the extension 114 is adjusted vertically by the screw, 116, the screw 141 is therefore also adjusted vertically and to the same extent. It </ B > It is important to note that the lever adjuster 136 ' has the effect of modifying the axial displacement of the grinding wheel for a given projection of the actuating cam, and that it is this axial movement < B> of the wheel which determines the importance of the relief ground on the drill behind the cutting edges of this one.
It is sometimes desired to increase or reduce this adjustment in certain special cases for a determined dimension of the drill and, consequently, for the same setting of the dial 132. It is therefore desirable that the screw 141 be able to rotate independently of the adjustment screw 116. To this end, the screw 141 is produced in a hollow form and a shaft 147 is fitted therein provided with a longitudinal groove 148 in which is inserted a stop screw 149 mounted in the shoulder 144 of said screw 141.
This arrangement allows the stop screw to slide back and forth in a groove 148 each time the adjustment is made by button 126; but one can also rotate the shaft 147 at any moment to drive the screw 141 in rotation without touching to the screw 116. < / B> For this purpose, the shaft 147 is extended to through the housing 117 to carry a pinion 150 which meshes with an internal toothing 151 cut into the internal wall of a pivot 153 screwed into a rotating dran 152 mounted on a - the housing 117. Thus,
by turning the dial 152 an independent adjustment can be made by means of the support roller 139 and it is therefore possible to modify the axial movement of the wheel with respect to its lateral movement.
The device 65 (fig, 1) supporting the drill bit 29 is shown in more detail in fig. 10 and 11. As shown in fig. 1, the base of the machine carries a console 154 provided with a horizontal slide 155 dovetail in which is mounted a workpiece carriage 156 proper to approach or to move away from the grindstone.
The carriage 156 itself has a dovetail slide 157 which, as shown in fig. 1, is mounted at right angle with respect to to the slide 155. As shown in fig. 10, in the slide 157 are mounted two slides 158 and 159 with threaded bores 160 < / B> and 161. The bore 160 is threaded at a pitch opposite to that of the bore 161;
a screw of adjustment 162 to two opposing threads 163 and 164 is screwed in the sliders 158 and 159 of such that the rotation of this screw causes the approaching or the removal of said slides 158 and 159, depending on the direction of rotation of said screw 162.
The screw 162 passes through a bracket of% ngle 165 attached to the carriage 156 and it has a part 166 of diameter reduced on which are screwed a ring 167 placed on one of the sides of the - console and an operating button 168 placed on the other side.
The slides, 158 and 159 carry clamping jaws 169 and 170 which are fixed to them by screws 171. The 169 and 170 jaws have V-shaped notches 172 cut in their faces in look ; the drill 29 is thus mounted in these notches and tightened by action - of the screw 162. The carriage 156 has on its lower face a 1st rack 174 which meshes with a pinion 175 (fig. 1) keyed on a shaft < B> 176. As shown in fig. 2, the 176 shaft extends through through the side of the sole 154 to carry a 177 operating handle which,
when activated, rotates pinion 175 to move the bit forward or backward from the wheel. The end of the carriage 156 carries a half-scale adjustment screw 178 provided with a graduated sleeve 179 keyed to < / B> sliding key fit on the screw and capable of turning relative to to a fixed index 180. A spring 179 ' is inserted between the graduated sleeve 179 and the head 180 ' of the screw.
This adjustment screw has a fine pitch thread which is screwed into a nut 181 (fig. 1) carried by the carriage 156 and its end is intended to come into contact with a stop 182 carried by the console 154 so as to play the stopper function and to limit the movement of the drill towards the grinding wheel. After a predetermined of grinding time, the micrometric screw can be adjusted and, by means of the operating handle 177, advance to the bit again until the screw is against the stop. Thanks to this arrangement, it is possible to subject the end of the drill to any desired number of passes.
The console 154 carries a mechanism specific to allowing to position the drill angularly to orient it to the desired starting position. This mechanism comprises an oscillating arm 183 (fig. 10) mounted to rotate on an eccentric 184 secured to a stud 185 . The 185 com hinge pin has smaller diameter ends mounted in a fork-shaped 186 bracket that un - </ B> pass on the small side of console 154.
The 183 arm carries an ear 187 suitable to come into contact of the wall 188 of </ B> the console 154 when said arm 183 is entered in an anti-clockwise direction by a spring 189. The arm 183 </ B > comprises an extension 190 of curved shape at the end of which is hollowed a bore 191 intended to re receive a die 192 for positioning the drill. This die has a conical depression 193 (fig. 14) suitable for receiving the end of the drill 29. This de- pressure contains a radial stop 194 intended to come into contact with one of the cutting lips of the drill.
It is understood that the die 192 can be oriented at any desired position in order to ensure the angular orientation of the drill bit according to the orientation of the cam on the grinding wheel holder. 53. When this is done, the die 192 can be fixed in position by means of a locking screw 195. The arm 183 is brought to the position of fig. 10 by the operator whenever he wishes to put in position a new drill ; this arm 183 has a stop pin 196 which comes into contact with a fixed surface 197 on the console 154.
The stop pin can be adjusted by means of a screw 198. Thus, when turning the arm 183 clockwise to bring the die 192 into the useful position, its axis can be centered on the theoretical axis 199 of the drill as determined by the jaws 172 and 173. We understand that we first bring the arm 183 to the useful position and then move the </ B> carriage 156 by the operating handle 177 so as to insert the end of the drill into the die. < / B> During this advance,
an offset arm 201 presented by the end of a spring lever 200 mounted on the side of the carriage 156 is introduced into a depression 202 dug in the face of the arm 183. The lever 200 is mounted on a pin 203 fixed to the carriage 156 and on which is arranged a spring 204 which pushes the lever 200 to the right in fig. 11. A stud 205 mounted on the carriage 156 is engaged in one end of the lever 200 to prevent it from rotating around the stud 203. Therefore, when advancing the carriage 156,
the arm 201 enters the depression 202 and abuts against the wall 206 thereof by pushing the stop pin 196 against its bearing face < B> 197. To limit the advance of the carriage 156, the arm 183 has a stop screw 207 screwed into its thickness and which protrudes into the depression 202 in the axis of the arm 201. When the drill has been placed in position, the jaws 169 and 170 are tightened to lock it in the carriage 156 and we reverse the latter so that the lever 183 can be folded down to allow the bit to be grinded.
It is of course necessary to dress the grinding wheel, but the dressing mechanism is not described in detail here. It suffices to know that it is desirable to choose a position for dressing the grinding wheel and to provide means to stop it at this -position. A this effect the dressing mechanism can be mounted on the support 57 in order to move with him.
As shown in fig. 12, the grinding wheel moves continuously along a circular path 208 around the axis 64 of the grinding wheel holder 53. A device makes it possible to stop the grinding wheel in the plane vertical of the axis 64 of the wheel holder 53, it being understood that the dressing tool moves in this vertical plane which coincides with a diametral plane of the grinding wheel. Of course, this displacement of the dressing tool takes place in this plane at a certain angle so as to to be parallel to the surface conical of the grinding wheel.
For this purpose, the wheel holder 53 is provided on its periphery with a positioning notch 209, as shown in in fig. 12, while the support 57 has a stopper 210 at the end of which is mounted a roller 21 1. The pusher is mounted in the support 57 along a radius relative to to the axis 64 and a stop screw 212, screwed into the support 57 and the protruding end of which 213 engages in a slot 214, prevents said pusher 210 from turning and maintains the axis of rotation of the roller 211 parallel, the < B> to axis 64.
A resoà 215 is interposed between a washer 216 and an insulating part 217 which bears against a nut 218 fixed on the end of the pusher, this part 217 being intended to actuate a switch, as will be seen below. The part 217 bears against an elastic arm 219 which controls a limit switch 220. Normally, the res comes out 215 maintains the pusher 210 to a position sufficiently cleared so that the roller 211 does not touch the wheel holder 53.
In the axis of the pusher 210 is disposed a pous evening control 221 pierced with a longitudinal bore 222 which follows another bore 223 of a smaller diameter. A rod 224 is mounted in the bore of small diameter 223, its head of larger diameter 225 receiving the action of a spring 226 mounted in bore 222. A threaded stud 227 is attached to the end of bore 222 to keep the spring under compression .
The pusher 221 is mounted to slide in a slide 228, welded to a fixed part of the machine ; the bore 229 of this slide has a longitudinal groove 230. The pusher 221 carries a button 231 mounted on its periphery and which is normally located to the right of the groove 230 when said pusher 221 is engaged in the bore 229. The pus evening 221 is normally retained at this position by a pawl at spring 232 (fig. 5) which engages in a depression 233 < / B> machined in the periphery of the rod. This arrangement fixes the position of the of parts such that the end of the rod 224 is in contact with that of the pusher 210.
The spring 215 is, on the other hand, strong enough to overcome the action of the spring 226 and, consequently, to maintain the assembly at </ B> a sufficiently retracted position so that the roller 21 1 remains cleared with respect to the grinding wheel holder 53, the limit switch 220 being open.
When the operator wishes to stop the machine to dress the grinding wheel, he pushes back the pusher 221 until the button 231 comes out of the slide, then he turns said pusher 221 until this button 231 engages in a notch 234 made on the innermost end of the slide 228. This has the effect of sufficiently compressing the spring 226 to push back the roller 211 and to bring it into contact with the periphery of the wheel holder 53. When the notch 209 comes in front of the roller 21 1, the pusher 210 moves to the left in fig. 12 and the lever 219 is then actuated so as to close the limit switch 220.
When the limiter switch 220 closes, it establishes an electrical circuit 235 and which supplies an electromagnet 236.
If we now refer to fig. 6 and 7, the electromagnet 236 is provided with a core 237 re linked by a lever 238 at the upper end 239 of the articulated 100 control fork, at 240. It is understood that when the electromagnet is energized, the nucleus 237 descends in fig. 7 and rotates the fork, to release the clutch teeth 95 and, therefore, to disengage the clutch 96 from the toothed wheel 94 to Meets the spring 98. The clutch 96 is keyed: on the shaft 62 < / B> with the pin 61 (fig. 2) and this shaft does not rotate at a very high speed.
Consequently, as soon as the crawler is disengaged, the friction of the moving parts controlled by the pinion 61 causes a rapid stop. However, to ensure that the clutch 96 stops almost instantaneously, face 241 (fig. 6) is hollowed out with radial grooves and a pusher 242 with sharp edge is mounted key way to engage in these grooves to immediately block the rotation of the wheel holder 53 with sufficient precision to bring the wheel to its dressing position.
When the operator wishes to restart the machine, all he has to do is turn push-button 221 until this button 231 is in the alignment of the groove 230, the spring 215 then returning the parts to their initial position and cutting off the power supply. the electromagnet 236.
When the machine is running, the motor is started and runs continuously , pulling the parts connected to it. The general profile of the cams which control the movements in the lateral directions and in the axial directions is shown in fig. 15 and 16. As shown in fig. 15, the periphery 106 of the cam 101 rotates clockwise and is hand held resiliently against the roller 105. This cam has been shown at its middle position,
its axis 64 coinciding with the axis 26 of the drill shown above the cam. In other words, the radii R, and R. of the cam are equal. At the same time, the roller 139 (fig. 16) is in contact with the deepest point of the lateral ramp 104. As this ramp 104 is elastically held against the roller 139, this means that the support of the grinding wheel is then at its greatest axial distance from the drill.
The periphery 106 of the cam 101 has a profile such that when it is rotated a few degrees clockwise, its low point 243 comes into contact with the roller. 105 by performing a rapid positioning movement which brings the grinding wheel to the position shown in fig. 18. At the same time the ramp 104 determines an axial displacement of the grinding wheel towards the drill, so that the latter is just touched by said grinding wheel.
The axis 64, which is the generation axis, then moves to the left of the axis 26 of the drill as seen in fig. 15. This corresponds to the displacement le along line 26a described above with reference to in FIG. 17.
The radius of the cam 101 decreases to from point 243 and this approximately to point 244, which means that axis 64 continues to move to the left, as the ramp 104 continues to to move upward to advance the grinding wheel towards the drill; the grinding wheel continues to to move around the axis 64 and it thus arrives at position 20a - 20a of </ B> fig. 17. This completes the bit grinding cycle for the sharp lips of the bit. The cams continue to rotate with a reset movement, then they repeat the grinding cycle by generation.
During this second grinding cycle, the radius of the cam 101 increases from point 245 to point 246, and the axis 64 sr, moves, to the right of raxe of the drill. The cam 101 is therefore in two parts, one of decreasing radius and the other of increasing radius. The axial movement remains the same in both cases.
