Lorsque tous les chiffres ont été posés, l'arbre principal 5 tourne en avant, c'est- à-dire en sens opposé à celui des aiguilles d'une montre, si l'on regarde le côté droit de la machine;
Desktop machine. The present invention relates to an office machine of the type comprising. a movable carriage and a device arranged so that the carriage can only move step by step, in one direction, for the successive setting of the digits of a number to be recorded and that this carriage is capable of being brought back to its starting position - by a single displacement, after the transfer of the set number to a totalizing device.
The machine forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that the carriage is moved, in both directions, by means of a control member driven by a reciprocating movement. by an actuating device comprising two springs: of which. the one lawful ground the control organ forward and of which. the other urges the control member backwards, and means for rendering one of the springs inoperative when the other has to drag the control member.
An embodiment of the machine forming the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which the fi-. 1 is a side elevational view of this embodiment, showing in particular the actuation mechanism of the carriage which it comprises.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this embodiment.
The machine shown comprises a base 1 at the end of which is mounted a keyboard 2 which is constituted by a group of significant keys 3, the lowering of any one of these keys causing., In the first part of the movement of the key, the movement of a laying element, not shown, .on the carriage 4 that comprises the machine and, -in the .dernière part of the movement of the. key, the movement of the cha riot to move it one step. towards the left of the machine, when looking towards the keyboard.
When a significant pose a. been carried out until the. total capacity of the. my china, the carriage will have advanced step by step each time a key has been lowered, until the end of its travel towards the left, position which is shown in the drawing, at the instant before the main shaft 5 @ of the. machine swivels forwards and backwards, so that the significant installation carried out on the carriage is transferred, during the forward stroke, to printing sectors 6 and, during the rear stroke, to the totalizing wheels not shown: totalizing device.
The carriage 4 carries rollers 7 rolling on rails 8 and its step-by-step movement is controlled by a movable plate 9 suspended below the keyboard and carrying rollers 10, each mounted on the path of the chamfered end 11 of the 'one of the significant keys 3, so that, when one of the keys is lowered, the plate 9 is moved backwards and thus lowers an angled lever 12,,
the small arm of which the plate 9 is connected at 13. This angled lever 12, that is. carried by the transverse shaft 14, is capable of coming into engagement with a comb 15 fixed under the carriage, and as this carriage tends to move to the left, under the action of a spring control mechanism which will be described later, the carriage advances one tooth of the comb to the left when the elbow lever is lowered, the significant key performing the operation returning to its normal position under the action of a spring. known manner.
The mechanism which has just been described reduces friction and ensures very easy and very sensitive movement between the keyboard and the carriage.
When all the numbers have been set, the main shaft 5 rotates forward, that is to say in the opposite direction to that of clockwise, when looking at the right side of the machine;
main control cams 16 then allow the printing sectors or character sectors 6 to swing upwards around their pivot 18 under the action of springs 17, the cams 16 being controlled by auxiliary sectors 19 carrying rollers 20 which engage the cams 16 and, rollers 21 which cooperate with shanks 22 cut in the form of cams in the character sectors 6. It will be understood that there is a group of character sectors. in number equal to that of the significant digits or letters representing the. total capacity of the machine.
When the character sectors tilt upwards in a direction opposite to that of the needles of a clockwise around the pivot 18, anterior noses 23 which include sectors pass in front of the rear face or laying face 4A of the carriage, up to 'so that they abut against the -displaced laying elements of the carriage.
At the right end of the group of character sectors there is a stop latch 24 which engages in one of the notches of a rack 25 mounted at the top of the carriage, so as to : prevent the carriage from reversing during the rotation of the main shaft 5 -in an anti-clockwise direction.
When this rotation of the shaft 5 is completed, the shaft 5 is rotated in the opposite direction to reset the. ma chine, movement during which the pose; signifi- cant is transferred to the totalized wheels, and at the same time the sectors with characters 6 return to their initial position under the action of cams 16 and 19, but the carriage cannot be reset, i.e. back to:
its initial position, that when a mas- selotte 26 forming a stop and carried by the sector 6 on the right comes to lift the stop latch 24 to release the rack 25, which occurs when the slats 23 have been raised and away from the installation face 4A of the carriage.
The carriage 4 is moved by an elbow control lever 27 coupled by a link 28 to the underside of the carriage and freely mounted on its elbow on a pivot 29 fixed vertically on the base 1 of the machine.
An ankle 30 fixed vertically to the small arm idu elbow lever 27 engages in a notch 31 of a lateral projection 32 of a bar 33 for controlling the carriage; the bar 33 is movable longitudinally in both directions, that is to say forward. back and vice versa, as we will see far away, to move the ankle 30 and tilt the lever, bent 27 around its pivot 29,
which thus causes the end of the rod 28 to move to move the carriage 4.
In the. embodiment shown, the control bar 33 is arranged on the right side of the machine and it is arranged for this to move along the base 1, from back to front, to cause the movement of the cart during installation , and to move back and forth, while resetting the carriage.
The control bar 33 is guided by a pin 34 which engages a slot 35 of the bar and which is screwed into the support. : right 36 of the rails of the carriage 4.
The movement of the bar from rear to front is caused by a tension coil spring 37 whose front end is fixed at 38 to the fixed rail support 36 and whose rear end is fixed to a peg 39 carried by the upper end of one of the arms 40 of a second angled lever 41 mounted in V on a pivot 42 screwed into the socket 1. The fixing pin 39 is arranged to be applied on the 'rear end 43 of the control bar 33 under a posterior pro lengthening of this bar.
If it is therefore assumed that the pin 39 can be applied freely on the rear end 43 of the control bar 33, it is conceived that the bar can be moved freely forwards under the action of the helical spring of tension 37 which has been previously tensioned before (that is to say at the end of the laying opera tion, when a rotational movement is imparted to the main shaft 5, as will be seen more away), and it can, through the control device 32, 30, 27, 28,
communicate to the carriage 4 a movement which will be transformed into a step-by-step movement as a result of the links 9, 12, 13 between the carriage. and keyboard 2.
When the installation is finished and the machine is running, by the oscillation of the main shaft 5, for the transfer of the po ssed figures, the installation carriage 4 is held in position by the stop latch 24 until until this operation has been performed, but as soon as the totals have been accumulated in the machine when 12s sectors to.
characters and the other sectors return to their initial position, the carriage must be reset to zero by the return of the control bar during the rotation of the shaft 5 in the direction of clockwise movement. For this purpose, in the embodiment shown, its arm is fixed to the main shaft of the machine, this arm being a trigger arm 44 carrying a transverse ankle 45 movable in a curved slot 46 of a sector. 47 articulated at its lower end 48 on the end of the small arm 49 of the angled lever 41.
When the main shaft 5 turns in an anti-clockwise direction, the trigger arm 44 swings upwards and the transverse pin 45 lifts the sec tor 47, after an empty stroke of determined amplitude and makes thus turn the elbow lever 41 clockwise around its pivot 42, to move its other arm 40, which carries the fixing pin 39:
tension spring 37, and move it rearwardly away from the stop surface 43 provided at the rear end of the control bar 33. A second spring 50 is connected at one of its ends to the fixing pin 39 and, at its other end 51, at the. control bar 33. In this way, when the fixing pin is moved away from the control bar to tension the installation spring 37, the return spring 50 is also armed.
While this second spring 50 is stretched, a locking member 52 mounted loosely on the shaft 5 is automatically brought by a spring 54 to a position in which a shoulder. 53 with which it is fitted is placed in front of the fixing pin 39 of the spring to prevent it: from moving forward under the action of the tension springs 37 and 50.
The locking member 52 is constituted, as shown in the drawing, by a lever directed towards the rear, articulated freely on the main shaft 5 and urged from bottom to top against the pin by a helical compression spring 54 mounted between the lower edge of the lever and the base 1.
The upper edge 55 of the locking lever 52 rests on the fixing plug 39 during the movement of the elbow lever 41, until the shoulder 53 of the locking lever 52 is. exceeded by the pin 39; at this moment the lever 52 moves sharply upward under the action of the compression spring 54 and thus prevents the pin 39 from moving forward.
As soon as the transfer of the. installation of the carriage. installation on the totalizing wheels has been carried out, by rotating the shaft 5 in the direction of clockwise movement, the: installation carriage 4 is released, since the stop latch 24 is raised: and moves away from the rack 25, and the carriage is brought back to the zero position under the action of the second spring 50. During this operation, the control bar 33 is moved rearward by the second tension spring. 50, and the movement of this bar moves the connecting rod 28 connected to the carriage by the intermediary of the notched projection 32 and. of the che ville 31 of the elbow lever 27.
When the main shaft 5 continues to turn clockwise to return to its extreme position, the trigger arm 44 attached to this shaft is brought down and its outer end 56 rests on a side edge 57 of the locking lever 52, which it lowers against the compression coil spring 54 to move the locking shoulder 53 out of the way. fastening 39, which can. lean freely on the rear end 43 of the control bar 33 under the action of the tension spring 37, stretched during the movement of the angled lever 41 backwards.
The elbow lever 41 rotates around its pivot 42 during the movement of the ankle 39 forward. During this movement, the curved slot 46 of the sector 47 fixed to the arm, of the elbow lever 41 moves on the ankle 45 of the arm. release 44.
Instead of using the arm 44 to trigger the locking lever 52 during the final rotation of the shaft 5, this trigger can be effected by the control bar 33. At this. Indeed, the control bar can carry, at its rear end, an ankle which, when this bar moves towards its extreme rear position, passes over a cam-shaped surface of the locking lever 52 to lower this lever and li Thus, the fixing pin 39 @du res comes out.
The latter arrangement has the advantage of avoiding any possibility that ila chev ille 39 for fixing the spring is released before. that the cart has not had time to turn back.
In order to allow the numbers set using the keyboard to be transferred several times to the totalizing wheels, for example to carry out a multiplication, a repeat key 58 has been provided which can be lowered to maintain the locking member. 52 lowered.
For this purpose., An articulated lock 59 has a spout 60 which engages par-; above the rim 57 of the locking lever 52, when the lock 59 is tilted forward by a rod 61 connected, at its anterior end, to a lever 62 in which is made a slot forming a cam 63 operating, under the 'action of a spring 64, with a pin 65 carried by the repeat key 58. It can be seen that when the repeat key 68 is lowered, the slot 63 passes over the pin 65, and, consequently, the spring 64 pulls the rod 61 forward.
Accordingly, the locking lever 52 is hand held down by the spout 60, so as to leave the fixing pin 39 free to move back and forth, whenever the shaft 5 oscillates without the bar. 33 and the carriage are moved.
To better understand how it works. of the machine shown during each significant installation, the sequence of operations during each installation will be explained below: a) Initial position of the carriage 4. The city plug 39 carried by the angled lever 41. for fixing of the spring is engaged with the rear end 43 of the. control bar 33 and tends to. move this bar forward so as to move the carriage to the left of the. machine.
However, the lever 12, which is engaged with the comb 15 of the carriage, prevents the latter from moving until a significant key 3 has been lowered. The report @de recall 50 is inoperative, in that its ends are fixed at points 51 and 39 which are fixed relative to each other.
b) When a digit key 3 is depressed, the control bar 33 can move forward one step and the carriage. take a step to the left.
c) When all the significant numbers have been set, the main shaft 5 receives a rotational movement in the opposite direction to it clockwise (looking at Fig. 1). This allows the character sectors 6 to rotate in an anti-clockwise direction under the action of their springs 17.
The sector stop latch 24 engages one of the slots in the rack 25, preventing the carriage from reversing.
d) Likewise, during the movement of the main shaft 5 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise, the pin 45 of the trigger arm 44, moving in the slot 46 of the curved sector 47, raises the latter. after a lost movement and thus turns the elbow lever 47 ..
This lever actuates the spring fixing pin 39 from front to back, which is connected to the free end of the arm 40 of the angled lever, which allows the locking lever 52 to rise and come to occupy its locking position in holding the two springs 37 and 50.
The installation spring 37 is now inoperative. The return spring 50 is arranged to bring the carriage back, but the movement of the latter is prevented by the latch 24 associated with the character sectors 6.
e) During the movement of the main shaft clockwise, the main sectors of the machine are brought back to their initial position by rotating the totalizer mechanism. The trolley cannot be brought back until the protruding slats of all sectors have been released:
laying bars or stop bands which constitute the laying elements carried by the carriage. As soon as all the main sectors are clear of the zero stop strips, the flyweight 26 of the right end sector lifts the latch 24 out of the slot in the rack 25, and the carriage will now return to its position. initial action under the action of the 50 return spring.
f) Immediately before the completion of the clockwise movement of the mainshaft 5, the release arm 44 comes in contact with its curved end 56 with the upper end of the locking lever 52. (or else, according to the aforementioned variant, the small pin of the control bar lowers the locking lever 52), which has the effect of lowering this lever and releasing the fixing pin 39 .du spring. The remaining tension of the return spring is thus released and the pin 39 of the res sort returns to its position:
in the rear forked end 43 of the control bar, this bar being in its posterior position; the spring 37 remains under tension, ready to actuate the carriage during the next installation operation.
Although the described trigger arm 44 is mounted on the main shaft. 5, it is obvious that this member can be mounted on any other shaft capable of oscillating, either by means connecting it to the main shaft or by control members distinct from that carried by the main shaft. The tree bearing the trigger can. also be electrically actuated when the mechanism of the machine is actuated elec trically., or mine this shaft can be arranged so as to be actuated by the operator and provided for example with a crank so that it can be turned.
