A process for the preparation of a highly polymerized ester with a crystalline structure. Synthetic linear polyesters derived from glycols represented by the general formula HO (CH ') - OH, and from dibasic acids represented by the general formula HOOC (CH -) - < / B> COOH, where m and n are integers greater than 1, are known.
However, although the linear polyesters described heretofore are capable of being drawn into strong, pliable fibers in which characteristic x-ray patterns show an orientation along the axis of the fiber, they have the lack of having a low melting point, and considerable solubility in a large number of various organic solvents, of being readily hydrolyzed by acids and alkalis, and of not being able to be used in textile applications.
The subject of the invention is a process for the preparation of a highly polymerized ester, with a crystalline structure, capable of providing filaments, threads, capable of being cold drawn, very little hygroscopic, insoluble in most solvents. usual ones such as ethyl alcohol, acetone, benzene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, etc., but soluble in some less usual solvents; such as nitro-benzene and m-cresol, exhibiting good resistance to acids and appreciable resistance to the action of alkalis and, when molten, appears as a very viscous liquid.
This process is characterized in that ethylene glycol is reacted with a compound of formula
EMI0001.0007
where R and R 'are groups which are removed during the reaction to form the ethylene glycol ester of said acid, and the product of the esterification is heated, in the molten state, until a polymer is obtained which has the aforementioned qualities.
The synthetic product obtained by the process according to the invention is therefore a highly polymerized polyethylene diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate; its structure is linear and includes the following recurring group
EMI0001.0013
This highly polymerized product has a more or less defined crystalline or microcrystalline structure and a fairly clearly defined melting point.
When it is spun or stretched in the molten state, it forms filaments which can then be cold drawn to several times their initial length, so that fibers are obtained whose molecules are oriented along the line. fiber axis, as indicated by the characteristic Y-ray diagrams, and which have high strength and pliability.
The strongly polymerized product can be prepared by heating ethylene glycol with diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid HOOC-C H4-0- (CI32) Z-0-CeH4-COOH Preferably the proportion of glycol relative to the acid is greater than one molecule of glycol for -one of acid, for example between one and a half and five molecules of ethylene-glycol for -one molecule of acid, given that with this excess the initial esterification takes place much more easily.
Known esterification catalysts, such as hydrochloric acid, p-tolLien-sidfonic acid or camphorsulphonic acid can be added to speed up this part of the reaction, but esterification also takes place. satisfactorily in the absence of these catalysts. As soon as all of the acid has reacted with the glycol, the temperature can be raised, the excess glycol removed by distillation, generally under reduced pressure, and the residue can continue to be heated to a temperature above its melting point. .
During this heating, further quantities of ethylene glycol are released as the polymerization progresses, and the melting point, as well as the viscosity of the reaction mixture gradually increase. The released ethylene glycol is continuously distilled off from the reaction zone and heating is continued until a product is obtained which has cold drawing properties. that is to say until the filaments obtained with the molten product have the property of cold stretching.
The heating can be carried out under a pressure equal to or less than atmospheric pressure and, preferably, in an inert atmosphere, that is to say in the absence of a gas containing oxygen. For example, a stream of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or hydrogen, can be bubbled through the melt through its capillary tube. Any inert gas can be used.
Highly polymerized polymethylene diphenox® -ethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate can also be prepared by heating esters of diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid with ethylene glycol.
As esters, there may be employed aliphatic or aromatic esters, for example low molecular weight alkyl esters, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl and diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylates. heptyl and aryl esters, such as those of phenol, cresols and other homologues. The reaction that occurs is an ester inter-exchange reaction.
Other derivatives of diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, such as dichloride, bromide or diiodide, can also be employed.
In order to carry out the ester interchange reaction making it possible to obtain the highly polymerized ester, the proportion of ethylene glycol is preferably greater than one molecule for one molecule of diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate. An excess of about 50% is usually sufficient, but the proportion can. still be strong dishes if desired.
It is advantageous to use an ester of diphenoxyethand-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid formed by starting from an alcohol or a phenol whose boiling point is sufficiently lower than that of ethylene glycol to that the first compound can be easily. removed from the reaction zone by distillation.
Heating causing temperature. the ester interchange reaction is preferably greater than the melting point of the reaction mixture, as well as the boiling point of the alcohol or phenol to be displaced, but not substantially greater than the boiling point ethylene glycol, and temperatures close to this boiling point are advantageous. The heating can be carried out under conditions allowing the removal of the alcohol or the phenol displaced from the reaction zone, generally by means of a conventional distillation plant.
Heating is generally carried out under atmospheric pressure, but the pressure can be higher or lower if desired. Preferably, the heating is carried out in an inert atmosphere, for example in the presence of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or hydrogen. Heating can be continued until the distillation of the displaced alcohol or phenol ceases and at that point the inter-exchange reaction can be considered to be complete.
When the process is carried out with ester interchange, the time required for the formation of ethylene glycol diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate may. be considerably shortened compared to that which is necessary when starting from the diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid itself and from the ethylene glycol.
The reaction between the diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dilialogenides and ethylene glycol is preferably carried out in the presence of a diluent, for example an inert organic solvent, such as chloroform or tetrachloroethane and in the presence of a base, generally. a tertiary organic base, such as. pyridine, N-methyl-piperidine, N-dimethylaniline or N-di-et:
nylaniline. Any inert solvent can be used in this operation.
The ester interchange reaction is advantageously carried out in the presence of ester interchange catalysts. The reaction proceeds very slowly in the absence of catalysts. The ester interchange catalysts which have been tested and have given satisfactory results to a varying degree are: lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, glucinium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, aluminum, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, mercury, tin, lead, bismuth, antimony, platinum and palladium.
Some of them, such as sodium, lithium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt, tin, lead and bismuth are effective ester interchange catalysts, used alone, but satisfactory results are also obtained by employing small amounts of an alkali metal, for example; 0.025J to 0.1 / a, by weight of the initial ester and one or more other metals mentioned above. The proportions of these other metals can vary widely.
Ester inter-exchange catalysts; can be added as powder, shavings, trimmings, tape, wire or in any other suitable form. The alkali metals, alkaline earth metals or magnesium are preferably used in the form of alcoholates obtained by dissolving them in ethylene glycol or in another alcohol, such as methyl or ethyl alcohol. Alkali metals can also be used in the form of their carbonates or other salts with an alkaline reaction, for example borates. Magnesium can be used in the form of its oxide.
It has also been found that the ester interchange reaction is accelerated by the presence of non-metallic ester interchange catalysts, for example boron, or by surface-only catalysts, such as crushed glass or fine glass. silica, in the presence of a small amount of an alkalin metal ester interchange catalyst. In fact, all known ester interchange catalysts which are compatible with one another can be employed.
The product of the ester interchange reaction or diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxy-; Low molecular weight polymerized polymethylene late obtained in another way can be made into a highly polymerized product by heating it to a temperature above the boiling point of ethylene glycol under conditions so that the removal of ethylene glycol. Preferably, the pressure is reduced during heating or during part of the heating to facilitate the rapid distillation of the existing excess ethylene glycol.
The pressure can be reduced in successive steps by starting the heating at normal pressure, continuing it at reduced pressure and supplementing it at an even lower pressure. Pressures of 20 mm dropping to 1 mm of mercury are particularly advantageous. You can adopt stronger or weaker pressures if desired. The products serving as catalysts can also be present in the reaction mixture during this phase.
Metal catalysts can be added to accelerate the polymerization in the second part of the process, when the free acid or the acid dihalide has started.
The heating is preferably carried out under conditions preventing oxidation, i.e. the presence of oxygen is undesirable and it is advantageous to pass a slow current of an inert gas, for example. nitrogen or hydrogen, through and / or onto the melt.
The melting point and viscosity of the molten product gradually increases during heating. The temperature is preferably maintained at a value high enough so that the mass remains in the molten state throughout the heating period, in order to allow esterification and polymerization to take place.
Heating is continued at least until a filament formed with the molten product has the property of cold stretching. Once the heating is complete, the product can be expelled from the reaction vessel or otherwise taken out in the molten state and then cooled. The expelled product can be put into blocks, pieces, etc.
The freshly prepared ester in the unstretched state sometimes has an amorphous structure. It becomes micro-crystalline when left to stand. At temperatures slightly above its melting point, it is an extremely viscous liquid, transparent or slightly opaque, depending on the presence or absence of the inorganic materials added as catalysts.
If this product is allowed to cool slowly or if it is heated to a temperature slightly below its melting point, crystallization occurs suddenly and the glassy solid becomes an opaque solid, similar to porcelain. The melting point of the ester increases rapidly with the degree of polymerization and can reach about 245 ° C for the highly polymerized ethylene diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate.
The solubility of the ester in organic liquids decreases with increasing degree of polymerization. It is resistant to hot and cold dilute acids and is only slightly attacked by hot and cold dilute alkalis. For example, highly polymerized ethylene diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate is practically resistant to 5N hydrochloric acid boiling for three hours, 0.1N hydrochloric acid boiling for 24 hours and 0.1N caustic soda. boiling for 24 hours.
Highly polymerized polyethylene diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate, pressure spun or melt drawn, provides filaments which can be cold drawn several times their original length, taking a structure in which the molecules are orien tees, that is to say that fibers of high strength and great pliability are thus obtained, and it is in this form of filaments and fibers that the highly polymerized ester finds its main applications.
The filaments can be obtained by pressure spinning or by drawing, from the molten product, immediately after completion of the heating during which the highly polymerized product is formed. It is also possible to remelt blocks, pieces or other forms of the product, and then transform them into filaments. Any suitable apparatus can be used for this purpose.
The cold drawing operation can be carried out on filaments which have been allowed to cool completely and solidify after formation.
The drawing need not be done cold, but will immediately follow the formation of the filaments and thus become part of a continuous operation. For example, one can wind the filaments of a roll on a bolster, the second roll rotating faster than the first, for example at a speed up to four or five times that of the first. Cold stretching can also be carried out by means of a brake rod.
In general, the stretching, which can be carried out at a temperature much lower than the melting point of the ester which is obtained. of the invention, is facilitated by heating the filaments which promotes their elongation. For example, they are passed through lukewarm or hot water or steam before and / or during the stretching operation.
Polymerized polyethylene diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxy late is a new compound. Likewise, free diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, its lower dialkoyl esters, its diphenyl ester and its dihalides, which can be used in the preparation of polyphenoxyethane-4,4'-diearboxylate. ethylene strongly. polymerized, are also new compounds.
Diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid can be prepared by reacting two molecules of disodium or dipotassium 4-hydroxybenzoate with one molecule of ethylene dihalide in an inert solvent such as toluene, extracting at water and acidifying the aqueous layer to precipitate the released acid, but it can be obtained with a better yield by hydrolysis of its lower dialkyl esters,
such as diethyl ester.
Diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl- or diethyl-esters can be prepared by heating to reflux two molecules of the sodium or potassium salt of the methyl- or ethyl-esters of 4-hydroxybenz6ic acid with a molecule of ethylene dihalide in alcohol.
Diphenyl-diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic ester can be prepared by starting from diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dichloride, heating it with an excess of phenol in xylene.
Diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dichloride can be prepared by heating the free acid with a. mixture of pentazhloride and phosphorus oxychloride.
Example 1: A mixture of 4.8 g of diethylenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylate diethyl, 1.5 cni: of ethylene glycol and 2.5 mg of dissolved lithium is heated. in 1 cm 3 of ethyl alcohol in a tube, distillation in a stream of nitrogen free of oxygen for about 2 hours at. 197 ° C until most of the ethyl alcohol has been removed and the ester inter-exchange reaction is nearly complete.
The glycol ester thus obtained is continued to be heated at 280 ° C. for 30 minutes, then again for 5 and a half hours in vacuum, while introducing a small quantity of nitrogen through a capillary tube. The product is a microcrystalline polymer melting at 235-245 ° C which readily yields fibers having to a satisfactory extent the property of cold drawing.
Example 2: A mixture of 10.74 g of diethyl di-phenoxyethane-4,4′-dicarboxylate, 3.3 cm: \ of ethylene glycol and 3 mg of lithium dissolved in 1.2 cm @ methyl alcohol, in a distillation tube in the presence of 127 mm of clean magnesium tape, as in Example 1 at 197 C, and the ester interchange reaction is practically complete after only an hour.
The resulting lower polymerized glycol ester was then heated to 280 ° C., as in Example 1, but the higher polymer having the required properties was obtained after 3 ½ hours.
Example 3: A mixture of 4 g of diphenoxyethane - 4,4 '- dicarboxylic acid and of d, 4 cm' of ethylene glycol is heated at 197 C for 50 hours in an atmosphere of nitrogen, then for 41 / hours at 245 C to complete the esterification. Heating is continued in vacuum at the same temperature for 181 /; hours and we get. a cold stretch cris tallin polymer.
Example A mixture of 4.54 g of diphenoxyethane-4,4'-diphenyl dicarboxylate, 2.1 em # "of ethylene glycol and 5 mg of carbonate is gradually heated to 280 ° C. of potassium in iii a stream of oxygen-free nitrogen and the mixture is maintained at this temperature for 30 minutes.
A vacuum is then made to act for 15 minutes to remove the last traces of phenol, 1 mg of lithium dissolved in 0.3 cm 2 of methyl alcohol and 50 mm of magnesium tape are added, and heating is continued in the vacuum for 4 hours at 280 ° C. The product obtained is a crystalline higher polymer, stretching at. cold.
Example 5: Slowly added 10.17 g of diphenoxyethane-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid dichloride â, a solution of 2 cm 'of ethylene glycol and 5.7 cm3 of pyridine in 50 cm3 of chloroform, the mixture is heated under moderate reflux for one hour, cooled and poured into ether. A brown oil separates out, it is washed with dilute acid, then the solid product obtained is washed with water and dried completely.
The lower polyethylene ester thus obtained is then heated in nitrogen in the presence of lithium and magnesium catalysts, as in the preceding examples, and a crystalline, cold-stretching upper polymer is obtained.
