Method and device for obtaining relief radiographs and relief radiography thus obtained. To obtain the impression of the relief, in the examination of the radiographs, it is common practice to examine, at. using a stereoscope. a couple of two radiographs taken at different angles of incidence of the beam, of X-rays. This mode of observation is tedious, because the user must determine by feeling the correct location of the two images, on the x-ray viewer, where the images are examined by transparency.
It has also been proposed to project onto a photosensitive surface, the two radiographic images constituting a stereoscopic pair, through a line screen alternately opaque and transparent, so as to obtain a positive lined image which, by a known optical phenomenon, appears in relief when examined through an identical frame, and at the distance at which the objectives were located before used for the projection of the images.
It follows from the very conditions for obtaining these two-image stereoscopies that they can only be observed in relief by shooting from perfectly determined points in space. Moreover, they are only likely to give the perspective of the subject seen from a single point of view, which only achieves one effect. very imperfect relief.
It is, on the other hand, known to make recordings of fluoroscopic images by photographing, or even by filming the so-called fluorescent imal which appears on fluoroscopy screens. -Shut this picture is. a very low light, and it therefore requires either extended exposure times, incompatible with the radiography of a living subject, or. the use of objectives of very wide opening, difficult to. to build, and in any case very expensive, above all. if the.
radiography must be obtained directly on a large format, that is to say immediately usable.
The present invention makes it possible to obtain radiographic i @ na;, e: observable in relief by reflection, that is to say without it being necessary to illuminate them from behind. The taking of these radiographs, by the means which are the subject of the invention, and which is carried out by photogra phy of the radioscopy screen, allows the use of small aperture objectives, without the exposure time being found. thereby. pro longed.
In addition, the examination of the images obtained is possible, no longer on the basis of determined points in space, but indeed along a relatively wide area in width and. very extensive in depth, the transverse movements of the observer, within the limits of the, examination basis thus created, giving him. the impression of turning around the x-rayed subject, due to the fact that it causes, by its movements, relative displacements between the elements or points more or less distant from the observed objects.
This improvement in the conditions for observation in relief is of considerable importance, precisely in the particular case of radiological examination, since it enables the various details of the image to be perfectly located in depth.
The invention relates to a method for obtaining radiographic images in relief, which the owner of the patent has called selectoradiographies, by photographing the fluorescent image appearing on the screen of x-ray machines, a device for the implementation of this method and a relief radiography obtained by the application of this method.
The method is characterized by the fact that the recording of the image is carried out there in. interposing a lenticular optical selector array in front of the photosensitive surface, and that causes, in the quaternary group formed by the Rôntgen bulb, the subject to be radiographed, the fluorescent screen and the photosensitive surface, a relative movement of at least two of these elements during the shooting, the other elements of said group remaining fixed.
The device is characterized by the fact that, with a view to recording the image, it comprises a refractive lenticular optical selector array placed in front of the photosensitive surface, and means causing, in the quaternary group formed by the bulb of Rtintgen, the subject to be radiographed, the screen. fluorescent and the photosensitive surface, a relative movement of at least two of these elements during the shooting, the other elements remaining fixed.
Radiography is characterized by the fact. that it is constituted by an optical selector examination network with lenticular elements and by a photosensitive surface containing multiple radiographic images of the subject recorded at different angles, and the elements of which are interposed with one another. It is this combination between a relative movement of said elements and the action of a lenticular recording selector,; or selectograph resulting from the advantages of the selectoradiographies obtained according to the invention.
In fact, the properties of the selectograph are exerted in this case very fortunately, in the sense of a selective action which makes it possible to carry out, without the course of a shutter, a continuous succession of recording, this continuity being the only one capable of ensuring the plasticity of the image obtained.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, three different embodiments of these devices.
In all the figures, the same reference numerals have been adopted to designate equivalent bodies, that is to say with the same function.
In fig. 1, 1 denotes the fixed frame of a first selectoradiography apparatus, the rear frame of which i. carries, along its vertical axis plane, two journals 2 on which pivots the assembly of the support panel 3 and of the platform 4 on which the patient is placed. Any suitable devices, shown in the selected embodiment, in the form of straps 5, make it possible to immobilize, if necessary, the subject in the apparatus, in order to ensure all possible sharpness in the radiograph image. phique.
Slides 6, 7, to each of which is added a control mechanism, not shown, of any embodiment, for example of the type designated by 36 in FIG. 3, make it possible to vary the distance which separates the axis 2 = 2 from the bearing plane of the panel 3, with a view to adjusting the position of the subject to be photographed for the purpose indicated below.
At the end of a fixed arm 8, a pin 9 is journalled, to which the dioscopy screen 10, of the known type, is integral. The lower end of the axis 9 is fixed to a lifter 11, capable of sliding along two horizontal rods 12, by means of articulated end sleeves 13, which screws 14 allow to block.
The axis 9 is, on the other hand, movable in a slide 10 of the arm 8, equipped if necessary with a device similar to that designated by 36 in FIG. 3. Thanks to the assembly which has just been described, the distance which separates the fluoroscopy screen 10 from the axis 2-2 can be changed at will.
Opposite the screen 10 is fixedly installed a photographic chamber 16, the objective of which is designated by 17.
Thanks to the properties of the optical selector used for shooting, properties indicated in particular in French patent No. 94-1261, of March 31, 1944, the lens 17 can be much smaller in aperture than up to present, without its low light affecting the speed of recording.
In the rear body of the graphic photo chamber 16 pivots a frame 18 in which. is, placed a special frame receiving the photosensitive surface as well as the optical len ticular selector for shooting, or selector. This frame is described in French patent Ne 944604, of January 1.3, 1944. The frame 18 is integral with a vertical axis 1.9, at the lower end of which is fixed a pa lonnier 20, pivoting at the end of the rods 12. The latter are articulated, at their opposite end, on the journals 21 of the platform 4.
Due to the longitudinal displacements provided for the support panel 3, these rods are of variable length and are, for this purpose, for example each provided with a connecting sleeve. 22 with locking screw. They could also slide in the lifting beam 20, then provided with the same sleeves as the lifting beam 1.1.
The above device is, of course, used in conjunction with the bulb of Rbntgen., 1 .. schematically shown in the figure and supported in a known manner, as in the usual radiology devices.
The operation of this device is as follows: With the selector, a characteristic element incorporated in the quaternary group specified above, an individual pivoting of three of the elements of this group is combined, the fourth remaining fixed. In this first exemplary embodiment, the subject, the screen 10 and the frame 18 each pivot around a particular vertical axis and at the same angle, during the shooting, so as to always remain parallel to each other. , the amplitude of this pivoting movement is normally equal to the opening angle of the lenses of the selectograph. As for the Rtintgen bulb, it remains fixed.
During recording, the fluorescent image, which appears on screen 10, exhibits an aspect which varies gradually as the obliquity of the subject changes, with respect to the direction of the Y-ray beam. This evolving image is progressively recorded on the sensitive surface, behind the selectograph in the form of image elements interspersed with one another, and corresponding to the successive aspects of the fluorescent image during the subject rotation.
When this composite image, once developed, is examined through a selector network called a selectoscope, analogous to the shooting selector, the visual rays corresponding to each of the two eyes of the observer come into contact, by virtue of the refractive properties. lenses of the selectoscope, image elements corresponding respectively to two different angular aspects of the subject, whereby the selectoradiography appears in relief.
The pivoting movement of the screen 10 is necessary to avoid distortion of the image, at the extreme angular positions. However, in cases where this distortion would be considered negligible, the apparatus can be simplified by equipping it with a non-pivoting screen 10.
It is easy to transform the device with horizontal axis shown into a vertical axis device.
Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment, the operating principle of which is identical to that of the device shown in FIG. 1, but where the relative angular movement of the constituent elements of the apparatus, forming the aforementioned quater nary group, is obtained by other means.
In this example, the subject to be radiographed is placed in the frame 1 ′ of the frame 1 and, contrary to what is in FIG. 1, it remains fixed during recording. It is, in this case, the bulb of RBntgen A, the x-ray screen 10 and the entire photographic chamber 16 which move in an arc of a circle around the axis 2.
The photographic chamber 16 belongs, in the example chosen, to a relief camera of the type described in Swiss patent No 238701, of May 27, 1942.
The frame 23 of this device rolls on the circular arc guideways 24, via oriented rollers 25. Under the action of a. A mechanism not shown in Swiss patent No. 238701, the chassis carrier frame 18 always remains parallel to itself and parallel to the frame 1 ', by pivoting around the journals 27 during the arcuate movement of the chamber 16.
An arm 26 is rigidly fixed to the front and rear bodies of this chamber 16, by means of locking screw sleeves 27. The x-ray screen 10 is itself mounted adjustable along the arm 26, through the intermediary of 'a locking screw sleeve 28, and a similar sleeve 29 allows the position of the bulb A on the end of the arm 26 which extends beyond the pivot 2 to be adjusted.
If it is deemed necessary to ensure constant im paral lelism between the screen 10 and the frame 1 ', these two members will be joined by a positive parallelogram device similar to that described in Swiss patent No. 238701, and consisting of fui first parallelogram 30 at the end of which is articulated a second parallelogram 31. This device makes it possible to move the screen 10 relative to the frame 1 'without the parallelism of these two members being affected by the modification of their spacing.
Of course, the frame 1 ′ can be provided with all the appropriate accessories allowing the patient to be X-rayed there conveniently. The screen 10 may also be provided adjustable in height.
The operation of this second device is as follows: The subject to be X-rayed being placed in the frame 1, the relief camera 16 is set in motion, to travel its recording path, from end to end. the other of its raceways 24, thus performing a race in an arc of a circle with the pivot 2 as its center. The arm 26 drags the screen 10 and the bulb A at the same time in this circular arc movement, which causes, as in the embodiment of FIG. 1, the appearance on the screen 10 of successive images which correspond to aspects of the subject seen from gradually varying angles.
The recording made, under these conditions, on the photosensitive surface has the same characteristics as that obtained with the apparatus of FIG. 1.
In this case also, it is obvious that it is possible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to arrange the arc of the apparatus vertically.
Finally, fig. 3 shows an X-ray table whose operation is identical to that of the previous devices and to the general provisions of which it is therefore unnecessary to go into more detail. We find in this figure all the organs common to the first two embodiments.
However, the selectograph is always, in this case, of the type with spherical or cylindrical lenses crossed at 90, to give rise to picture elements in the form of points, and the frame 18 ', in which is placed the special frame which contains this selector and the photosensitive surface, is capable of carrying out, after each shooting, a pivoting movement about an axis 32 perpendicular to the axis 19. This movement is controlled, for example, by a lever 33 and marked on a graduated sector 34 by means of an index 35.
The pivoting of the selectograph and of the photosensitive surface around the axis 32 makes it possible to record on the latter a plurality of distinct radiographs, in application of the particular properties of the crossed embossings, exposed in French patent No. 944261, of March 31. 1944, already mentioned above.
This possibility of recording several distinct radiographs on the same image, an image whose development time is the same as that of a single radiography, presents, in addition to the massive saving of sensitive surface thus achieved, considerable advantages in practice. of radio logy. The elimination of all the handling of cassettes between the recording of successive views allows a very appreciable saving of time. For the examination, the developed multiple image is viewed through a selectoscope of the same type as the selectograph which was used for its recording.
By a simple vertical movement of the head - or by tilting the image around a horizontal axis, the observer will successively see in relief the different radiographs recorded on the same image. The reliability of the practitioner's diagnosis can be notably increased by this comparative examination of multiple radiographs corresponding, for example, to a succession of different incidences of the X-ray beam.
The freedom of movement of the support panel of FIG. 1, or the table of FIG. 3 relative to the pivot axis?, Allows the subject to be moved to a certain extent relative to the plane of the image obtained naked. In fact, the parts of the subject located on this side of the pivot 2, relative to the screen 10, will appear in front of the image plane and, conversely, the parts of the subject located further than the pivot 2, relative to screen, will appear to be beyond the image plane. Now, it may be advantageous to make the plane of the image coincide with the well-determined plane of the subject, and the slides 6, 7, combined with the mechanism 36, precisely allow this adjustment.
This device therefore makes it possible to choose the main plane of the selectoradiography at will. In all of the foregoing, it has only been a matter of a pivoting movement of the selectograph and of the photosensitive layer, with a view to selecting the successive images, movement corresponding to the relative angular displacement achieved between the subject and the direction. of the X-ray beam. However, it is still possible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to substitute for this angular movement a sliding movement of one of these two elements with respect to the other, movement carried out from known manner, and which we know to perform the same selection function as the angular movement in question.
The negative images, obtained as explained above, can be taken, by contact, in the usual way, to provide positive proofs which can also be observed, with the same relief, when they are covered with a selectoscope. These prints can be obtained either on glass, to give transparent images, or on paper to provide images observable by reflection.
For the printing of these last proofs, we will use the virgin product which is the subject of Swiss patent No 238851, of November 1.5, 1943.
It is also possible to obtain proofs drawn directly on a selectoscope carrying the photosensitive layer on the back, by proceeding as indicated in Swiss patent No. 255432, of July 18. 1944.
