Device for obtaining parallax stereograms The present invention relates to a positive device for obtaining paralaxial stereograms, that is to say stereoscopic pairs in which the two images are arranged in the form of an image. of assembly constituted by two series of interlocking narrow bands such that each band belonging to one of the images of the pair alternates with a band of the other image, each pair of bands corresponding substantially to the same element linear aspect of the subject seen from two different points of view.
Since each series or group of bands only corresponds to the recording of half the total area of each complete image of the pair, it is important that the bands are narrow enough so that there is no discontinuity. apparent images. Under these conditions, when a suitably placed observer looks at the stereogram through a line frame, he sees a relief image; in the same plane of the stereogram, he sees these two elements of the photographed subject whose homologous points coincide in said plane, the other elements appearing in front or behind this plane according to the relative positions of the corresponding homologous points.
At the present time, parallelaxial stereograms are sometimes recorded by means of apparatus comprising a single lens which effects projection onto a light-sensitive layer (layer which is placed in the image plane) through a selective screen and at the same time. means of an image duplicating device placed in front of said objective, so that the light beams emanating from the subject and appearing to come from two virtual images, separated horizontally from one another and seen from two different points of view, fall on two different parts of the lens.
The image duplicating device may consist of two pairs of mirrors the centers of which are in a horizontal plane, each mirror being adjustable and the outer mirrors being spaced apart from each other by an amount corresponding to the base. stereoscopic photography.
The selector screen is generally a cylindrical lenticular grid which is difficult to manufacture; it has also been proposed to use polarizing screens, the drawback of which is to absorb a large amount of light.
However, the applicant has found that, in order for the human to correctly integrate the parallax stereograms obtained with an apparatus of the aforementioned type, it is necessary for the bands which form the overall image to be of such a nature. that the demarcation between two contiguous bands recorded by the same part of the grid is not clear, but is blended.
This result can be obtained with the device according to the invention, a device comprising a single objective which ensures the projection, on a sensitive layer, through a selective grid, of the light coming from reflective means placed in front of said objective, the selective grid being a line frame known per se, but placed at a distance from the image plane such that the illumination of the image bands corresponding to one of the two images varies in accordance with a curve representative of a function periodic whose period is substantially equal to the pitch of the line frame, while the illumination of the image bands corresponding to the other image varies along a curve similar to the previous one, but shifted by a quarter of a period with respect to to the latter.
An embodiment of the device forming the subject of the invention is shown schematically and by way of example in the accompanying drawing in FIG. 1 is a block diagram which is the basis of the invention; fig. 2 is a diagram which represents the distribution of the illumination of the different bands constituting the stereoscopic pair; fig. 3 is a sectional view of an apparatus for shooting parallax stereograms, comprising the application of the principle of FIG. 1; fig. 4, finally, represents the observation of the stereogram by means of the selective grid thanks to which the vision in relief is obtained.
In fig. 1, the image plane is designated by 1 (sensitive layer, frosted glass, etc.) and by 2 the selective grid or lined screen placed in front.
At the focal length of plane 1 there is a single objective 3 upstream of which are arranged duplicating means consisting of two groups of plane mirrors 4a and 5a, on the one hand, and <I> 4b </I> and <I> 5b, </I> on the other hand, judiciously oriented with respect to each other and whose centers are arranged in a plane perpendicular to the lineage of the frame 2. The two groups of mirrors 4a-5a and 4b-5b forming the duplicating means, subdivides the objective 3 into two half-objectives <I> 3a, 3b, </I> behaving like two virtual elements of objectives separated from each other by the distance corresponding substantially to the 'spacing between the centers of the two exterior mirrors <I> 4a </I> and <I> 4b. </I>
The grid 2 formed of opaque lines 2b and transparent lines 2a (of the same width as the lines 2b) alternately obscures the portions of light beams coming from one and the other of the semi-objectives.
The overall width of two adjacent bands is designated by 2p which represents the pitch or period of the frame. The calculation shows that, to obtain the desired result, the distance e from frame 2 to plane 1 must be
EMI0002.0012
formula in which f is the focal length of the objective 3 and 0 is the useful diameter of said objective.
When the frame 2 is thus placed relative to the plane 1, we obtain on the image plane 1, seen in section transversely to the image bands, a whole series of particular points <I> a, a ', a ". .. b, b ', b "</I> ... corresponding to illuminations coming respectively and exclusively from one and the other of the semi-objectives 3a, 3b.
If we denote by p the width of each of the opaque and transparent lines of grid 2, the width of the image zones a-â <I>, </I> a'-a "... or b- b ', b'-b "is constant and practically equal to 2p which represents a period in which the illumination is distributed substantially according to the shape of the curves of FIG. 2 on which the intensities of the illumination on plane 1 have been represented on the ordinate (E), the intensities represented in solid lines corresponding to the light supplied by the semi-objective 3a,
while the intensities represented in dotted lines correspond to the light supplied by the semi-objective 3b.
Thus, starting from point o, the illumination coming from the semi-objective 3a gradually decreases to become zero at the point p / 2 from which the illumination coming from the semi-objective 3b increases to become maximum at point <I> a. </I> In the interval ab, the phenomenon is different: the illumination provided by the semi-objective 3b remains maximum from a until
EMI0003.0003
while the illumination provided by the semi-objective 3a increases progressively from a to become, too, maximum at
EMI0003.0004
Then until b, the same variation occurs, but in the opposite direction, that is to say that the illumination produced by the semi-objective 3a remains at first constant and maximum, while the illumination due to semi-objective 3b decreases.
From b, we find the same periodic distribution of illumination.
It can be seen that the division of the image into the bands formed alternately from the left image and the right image (by the semi-objectives 3a and 3b) is theoretically not perfect. In particular, the first half-period p (interval oa) is marked by a narrow black band (parasitic zone) in the vicinity of p / 2 tan say that the second half-period p-2p (interval ab) comprises a band narrow very light miner (another parasitic zone) simultaneously illuminated with the same maximum intensity by the two semi-objectives.
However, experience shows that the aforementioned parasitic zones are practically of no importance. Their width being of the order of a hundredth of a millimeter, the eye (whose separating power at 30 cm is of the order of 0.1 mm), integrates all the variations in luminosity so as not to record, in the end. , that a succession of bands of images alternately left and right.
In a preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention, embodiment shown schematically in FIG. 3, said device comprises a chamber 6 which is arranged to receive a sensitive surface 1, placed behind the selective grid 2, and which is provided with the objective 3. For the sake of simplicity, neither diaphragm nor shutter has been shown.
In front of the chamber 6 are placed the mirrors <I> 4a, </I> 5a and <I> 4b, </I> 5b, forming a duplicating unit. To allow the adjustment of the mirrors, the interior mirrors <I> 5a and 5b </I> and exterior mirrors <I> 4a </I> and <I> 4b </I> are mounted to pivot around axes <I> 7a , 7b, </I> <I> 8a, 8b </I> respectively, the axes 8a, 8b of the exterior mirrors <I> 4a </I> and <I> 4b </I> being, moreover, slidably mounted in guides 9a, 9b, perpendicu lairement to the optical axis to allow the variation of the spacing of the points of view.
The frame or grid 2 can advantageously be obtained at the desired pitch, by pho tographic reduction of a large scale mother screen, the period (2p) thus being able to drop to a few hundredths of a millimeter. The grid is wedged a few tenths of a millimeter upstream of the sensitive surface, for example by means of wedges. The cliché of the mother screen can be glued to a protective glass which is then machined to a thickness corresponding to the distance of the grid from the image plane, the machined face of the glass then being applied against the sensitive surface.
Fig. 4 shows how the restitution, in relief, of the stereoscopic raster image 10 observed through a grid 11 (similar to the shooting grid 2), placed at a suitable distance from the image 10, takes place.
If the elementary image bands (p) have a width of less than 0.1 mm, the eyes integrate all the variations in illumination within these bands (up to a limit corresponding to the sensitivity threshold), making sure that the observer is positioned so that the right eye <I> Dr </I> can only see the ban des corresponding to the right image and the left eye <I> Ga </ I > than the bands corresponding to the left image.
Among the applications of the invention, it is possible to point out, without this having a limiting character, the photograph in relief by stereoscopic cliché or printing on film (which can be observed by transparency) or on paper, cliché or print on which is pasted. a selective grid; relief cinematography, on current film, by recording steroscopic images through a screen placed in the window of the camera, and projection on a screen in front of which a selective screen is placed, and so on.
