Briquet.
La formé de réalisation décrite et repré sentée est susceptible de nombreuses variantes. Par exemple: la pierre pourrait plus sim plement, étant filetée sur toute sa. longueur et ronde, avancer en se vissant, avec un peu de jeu, dans une plaquette fixée sur le réser voir immédiatement sous la plaquette de la fourche à ressort 19 dont le trou serait agrandi pour permettre le libre passage de la. pierre;
Lighter. The present invention relates to a lighter which allows the use of a stone, the length of which may reach the length of the fuel tank of said lighter and which comprises means for advancing the stone which are actuated by the lighter ignition mechanism, each time this mechanism is in action, thus eliminating the current drawback of these devices of having to frequently replace a stone a few millimeters long.
The fi, -. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing show, by way of example, one embodiment of the lighter according to the invention.
This lighter is composed of a hollow main body 1 preferably of molded material .; or light metal, which serves as a reservoir for the combustible liquid, soaking a kind of flat cushion of cotton wool, for example, covered with fabric, which fills its cavity, but is not shown in the drawing.
The circular filling opening has a diameter of about 27 mm and is surrounded by several concentric grooves 2 hollowed out (1 (-il>, the thickness of the wall of the tank intended to ensure the seal in contact with the outer casing 3.
One of these grooves can moreover be lined with a plastic material for this purpose. The walls of the tank are pierced with a chimney of square section, pierced from end to end, but without communication with the interior of the tank, in which the stone 4 is housed, and another chimney 5 communicating with the tank. for the passage of the wick, which penetrates inside the small cushion mentioned above, and is not mentioned in the drawing either.
The outer projection of this chimney 5 has a very special shape: mainly a boss and a groove shown in the drawing.
The tank also includes a bos sage 6 and: two hooks 7.
Applied to the reservoir and capable of sliding in translation on it, there is a shell-shaped cover $ covering the upper organs of the lighter, and the central part of which 9 articulated at 10 covers the chimney wick holder.
The rear part of this cover which has a concave shape at the location of the arrow indicated in the drawing, ends with two extensions 11., wound around the. part 12 which in a way constitute two journals, which serve to guide the cover, in its translational movement, by their sliding with gentle friction, between the upper side of the tank, and the re edges 13 folded for this purpose of the envelope outdoor 3.
The cover carries at 14 a notch having substantially the shape of a 1 \ to save the passage of the racks and of the spring which will be discussed later. The two vertical sides determined by this notch have their curved end parts in the form of hooks which engage under the hooks 7 to, in the closed position, ensure the maintenance of the cover in conjunction with the parts 11 and the two ends of axle 18.
There is also a curved tongue cut and cut into a whistle 15 provided in the upper part of the notch.
The wheel 16 is flanked by two smaller ratchet wheels 17 which surround it, are integral with it, and have a common axis; this solidity being ensured by all appropriate means, not shown in the drawing: riveting, welding, etc.
This triple wheel can turn around the axis 18 which has passed through the fork 19. This comprises, in line with the axis of the wheel and in a plane parallel to this axis, at the same time as perpendicular to the stone , a thinned platform, pierced with a square hole through which passes, with gentle friction, the upper end of the stone, and whose end folded in 20 comes to rest on the rim of the nut 21 thus contributing to the maintenance of the parts.
It comprises, on the other hand, an oval recess through which the chimney 5 passes and thanks to which it is hooked in the groove 22, while the other end which carries an opening to allow the boss 6 to pass through and allow free play of the part 12 is re-curved in the form of a thinned hook, and comes in the manner of a tab to be applied on the articulated part 9 of the cover.
The shape of the elastic steel fork 19 has been made in such a way that its action, finding its bearing points at 22 and on the flat surface around 6, tends, by one of its ends, to apply the knob to the stone, and, by the other, to keep the chimney cap closed 9.
Two racks with oblique saw teeth 24, parallel and framing the wheel while being themselves framed by the fork 19, are secured to a common axis 25 parallel to the axis of the wheel, this axis itself being at gentle friction in the end of the spring 26 which partially surrounds it.
This large flat spring 26 is applied throughout the outer wall of the tank and is hooked, after a substantially square bend, in a groove made at 27.
The shape of this spring is such as an elastic soli action, taking its bearing points at 28 and on the surface below the tank. tends to keep the racks fully engaged in the lighter, as shown in the drawing.
On the other hand, the axis 25 carries a flat, on which rests a tongue with a bevelled end 29, reserved in the mass of the spring 26 by two saw cuts parallel in the direction of the length of this spring. The tongue thus determined has received an initial cam brure the action of which tends to apply the racks 24 on the ratchet wheels 17, these arrangements having the effect that the mo lette will be driven only in the direction which causes ignition -and which is that of the relaxation of spring 26.
Stone 4 which may have, when new, substantially the height of the lighter, is made up of a threaded rod -in ferro-cerium, or any other suitable alloy, and has four flats giving it a square section which does not leave the thread only on the four angles -and only allows it to move in translation in the lighter.
Given the reduced surface area of what remains of the thread thus amputated, it can be specially hardened, by surface chrome plating for example, or any other appropriate treatment, electrical, chemical or mechanical, this operation moreover being able to be carried out before the cutting flats.
This stone can be obtained by stripping, cutting, molding, stretching or any other process.
Screwed onto the upper end of the stone, and resting on a seat bored into the thickness of the reservoir, is the nut 21., the upper part of which has the shape of a ratchet wheel. He can turn and so do, ride it. stone under the action of the end C # ii in the form of a pawl of the part 12 which is likely to come into contact with it during the translation nionvenient of the cover 8.
The part 12 has a rectilinear part threaded through a hole in the boss 6 and enveloped by a spring. coil 30. It is divided into two parts at right angles which will fit into the journals 11. These three parts of the part 13 serve to transmit to the c1iquei, which has just been mentioned, the translational movement. cover 8.
The envelope 3 is formed by a metal foil preferably, substantially rectangular and folded in two equal parts from the side opposite the stone. It covers in a way, like a book cover, the reservoir on which it is applied coincidentally.
The edges of this envelope, which completely cover the lower side of the tank, leave the spring 26 uncovered and free: they protrude only at the base up to 28 over a few millimeters in width where they apply exactly. Likewise, they leave the upper side of the tank entirely exposed, coming only flush with the latter and the cover; only the extensions 13 and 32 are left.
In the thickness of the walls of the reservoir can be formed a rectilinear channel, preferably in the direction of the length of the lighter. It will lead to the outside, preferably at the bottom of the lighter, and will be. capable of receiving a small pencil, a mechanical pencil or a point, thanks to which the user will be able to write: on one or both flat faces of the lighter, the surfaces of which will have been specially adapted for this, either by frosting or by covering with a coating or suitable removable sheets.
A removable rigid flange 31 having substantially the shape of a U whose two arms are two flat buttons on their internal surface is housed under the spring 26, in a suitable groove of the reservoir and of the envelope which it keeps tight on it, thus ensuring the closure and the tightness of the reservoir and, concurrently with the flanges 32 and 28, the fixedness of the relative positions of the lighter components.
Function: The lighter being fitted with its wick, not shown in the drawing, and filled with fuel, it suffices to press in the direction of the arrow on the concave part of the cover 8. The latter then moves to the left, driving by its beak 15, (it comes into contact with the tongue 29, the spring 26 and the racks 24, at the same time as the cover-beak 9 opens.
These various parts then take the positions partially indicated in continuous lines on the drawing.
At the same time, the pawl 12 has come to engage in the nut 91 which it has turned, thus causing the stone to rise in contact with the wheel until the resistance of the spring fork 19 which flexes from this point 22 becomes greater than the resistance of the pawl rod, itself elastic, and unhook this pawl which then overrode.
At this moment, the wheel presses sufficiently on the stone to ensure good ignition, and the spring 26 is loaded as well as 30 which works in compression.
But the operator, having continued his push in the direction of the arrow, the tongue 29 slips out under the spout 15 and the spring 26 suddenly returns to its initial position, causing the wheel 1.6 to turn via the racks 24 which were meshed on the ratchet wheels 17 thanks to the action of the spring lan 29 on the flat part of the axle 25.
The lighter then ignited. If you want to leave it permanently in this position, it suffices to always exert on the same point of application a slight vertical thrust from bottom to top which has the effect, given the play between the different parts, of hook the pins 12 whose ends end in a bevel, .in the small grooves 33 provided for this purpose on the edges 1.3.
If, on the other hand, the cover 8 is abandoned, the various parts return to their initial position by the effect of the spring 80 which relaxes. In particular, the cap 9 covers the chimney 5 thus covering the wick which goes out; it is applied there by the end of the spring 19 in conjunction with the action of the spring 30 which is moreover greater than it.
Filling: The lighter is placed in the open hooked position, which allows: to release and remove the flange 3l. The lighter is then allowed to close, and one pushes aside slightly. the walls of the casing by acting on its elasticity, until it is possible to disengage the reservoir therefrom.
If we then have the fuel supply in a medium-sized cylinder ,. Once capped, capped - with the tank applied through its opening on the neck, the bottle thus capped is turned over while maintaining: its adhesion with the small cushion mentioned above, which lines the tank, and which absorbs just the quantity of fuel which is necessary for him. The same operations carried out in reverse return the lighter to the operating position.
Replacement of da stone: The casing is removed as explained above, then the spring 26 is removed by releasing it from the groove 27. The lower opening of the chimney-housing , stone is then free; a sufficient length of stone is engaged therein to abut on the nut 21 and the latter is rotated with the hand in order to raise the stone until it comes into contact with the wheel. The supply rod is then broken flush with the reservoir, and the lighter is reassembled as indicated above.
Complete disassembly: The casing is removed as explained above, then the spring 26, by releasing it from the groove 27, It comes with the rack.
The cover can then be removed, first by removing it from part 12, taking advantage of the play between these parts and their elasticity. The part 12 then comes quite naturally, because its pawl has a sufficient passage jump. In the hole -of the boss 6,
which is normally reduced to the caliber of the rod by a removable & fuse which is withdrawn with the latter. We can finally remove the spring fouxehe 19 by first lifting it to release the platform from the nut 21 and the stone by pushing it towards the boss 6, which has the effect of disengaging it from the groove. 22.
The triple pattern can be released from the fork by pushing, with the point of a pencil for example, the axle 18 which is mounted with gentle friction.
The small absorbent pad is, of course, removable. This disassembly and complete assembly are carried out without any special tools.
The lighter thus constituted is particularly safe in operation, because its automatic system is designed in such a way that the triggering speed on which the certainty of ignition depends is independent of the manual skill of the operator.
The moving parts proceed from relatively very developed movements and by sliding over large surfaces, which has the effect of rendering the influence of wear negligible and jamming impossible.
The same is true of rotating parts, which have axas of large diameters. Moreover, the system is designed in such a way that this wear is compensated in each case by the very action of the springs which ensure or control these movements.
These springs are themselves very reliable in operation, since they are preferably of the leaf type, single or multiple juxtaposed, and provide relatively small displacements with respect to their length.
This lighter is of convenient use, in that the cocking and opening, the advancement of the stone to compensate for its wear, the ignition and the return to the closed position are produced by a single push of the finger.
Filling is facilitated by the large opening of the reservoir, eliminating the use of a funnel, this opening having a diameter at least equal to that of the normal neck of a one-liter bottle. In the thickness of the walls of the lighter can be housed a small pencil or mechanical pencil, allowing to write on one or both sides of the lighter whose surface has been specially adapted for this.
The embodiment described and shown is susceptible of numerous variations. For example: the stone could more simply, being threaded on its whole. length and round, advance by screwing, with a little play, in a plate fixed on the tank see immediately under the plate of the spring fork 19 whose hole would be enlarged to allow the free passage of the. Pierre;
the wheel would be eccentric with respect to the stone during a part of its operation during which it would not act on the entire surface of the stone, which would have the effect of rotating the latter and making it rise by tightening the spring 19.
During this time, the wheel which would be screwed on its axis, which would be fixed, by turning on this one, would tend to return to the center in relation to the axis of the stone and it would arrive at a moment where the action of the spring 26, the empor so much on that of 19, the wheel would bite. in bed stone and would ignite the lighter.
The racks 24 would be of the model with ordinary gear teeth, straight, always in engagement, and would thus rotate the wheel to baller as on the return, and each of these movements would have the effect at the same time as the rotation of the wheel to cause its displacement in the direction of decentering with respect to the stone, or in the opposite direction. This particular system would be susceptible to variations or modifications of details, in order to ensure greater operational safety.
In another variant of the long-stone lighter, the latter, instead of having its advance provided by a screw and nut system, could be pushed by a coil spring of substantially the same length as it, the casing. pent entirely and in which would progress ime plate serving .de seat at the base of the stone of which it would have the same diameter; which plate would carry two opposite lugs which would engage between the coils of the spring, the advancement of the stone and the bandage of the spring being provided by the rotation of the latter around the plate capable of .de moving only. in translation.
This rotation could be done continuously and automatically in conjunction with. the very act of igniting the lighter.
