Pyrophoric stone lighter. The present invention relates to a pyrophoric stone briquet, comprising a body surmounted by a cover subjected to the action of a spring tending to maintain it in the closed position and provided with a snuffer intended to cover a wick. passing through a drill guide.
This lighter is characterized by a cover capable of being displaced axially and angularly along a hinge axis parallel to the wick guide.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, two forms and two variants of execution of the lighter.
Fig.1 is an elevational view of the first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a plan view, a part <the protection being. removed.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view thereof, the cover being in the open position and certain parts being seen in section.
Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof, the cover being in the open position.
The fi-. 5 to 7 are views partially in section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 2, the cover being shown respectively in the closed position, in the raised position and in the open position.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the body (the lighter with the cover removed.
Figs. , 9 and 7.0 are views in axial section of the body of the lighter taken along line IX-IX of FIG. 8 in two variants. Fig. 11 is a partial view of the second embodiment, certain parts being seen in section.
The lighter shown comprises a cylindrical body 1 forming a reservoir 2 for the fuel. This reservoir is closed by a plug 3 fitted with a sealing washer e and screwed onto one of the ends of the cylinder 1. The other end of the latter is closed by a front wall 4 through which a drill guide passes. 5, the end of which has a conical seat 6 (FIG. 7), intended to cooperate with a seat 7 formed inside a snuffer 8 carried by a cover 9. The latter, of cylindrical shape, is pivoted eccentrically by relative to the body 1 and movable axially along a. articulation axis 1.0.
A spring 11 coaxial with the axis 10 is housed in a chamber 12 of the cover. This spring, taking support, on the one hand, on a head 13 of the hinge pin 10 and, on the other hand, on the bottom of the recess 12, tends to keep the cover 9 in the closed position ( fig. 1 and 5). This cover comprises, to. its lower part, a recess 14 intended for housing the heater 8 fixed on the bottom 15 of this recess (fig. 6), with a wheel 16 pivoted on an axis 7.7 integral with the front wall 4 of the body 1, and a boss 18 of this wall.
This boss has a guide 19 (FIG. 8) for a pyrophoric stone 22 and a groove 20 giving passage to the end of one. arm 21 of a positive device exerting pressure on the stone 22. This device consists of a torsion spring 23 housed inside the reservoir. This torsion spring can be constituted by a torsion bar (fig. 10) or by a coil spring working in torsion (fig. 9). One of the ends of the spring 23 is made integral with the cylindrical wall of the body 1. For this purpose, the wall 1 carries a lug 39 having a groove in which the curved end 40 of the spring 23 is engaged.
The second end of this spring is engaged with gentle friction in a guide 24 passing through the wall 4, and carries the arm 21. The latter tends to apply the stone 22 on the wheel 16. A part of this wheel protrudes from to the cylindrical walls of the body, in order to allow its actuation. A notch 33 made in the cover 9 gives passage to the knob and allows the closure of this cover.
The operation of the lighter described is as follows: To cause the lid 9 to open, it suffices to slide it along its hinge axis 10 against the action of the res out 11, then when its edge 25 is at a distance from the wall 4 at least equal to the thickness of the wheel 16 or of the boss 18, to cause the cover to pivot about its articulation axis. The latter being eccentric with respect to the axis of cylinder 1, the angular displacement of the cover causes the update of the drill guide 5. By then actuating the wheel 16, the user causes the lighter to ignite. .
It should be noted that the opening of the cover 9 can easily be obtained by the action of the thumb of the right hand, the body of the lighter being held by the latter. Indeed, by exerting with the thumb simultaneously a thrust following arrow A on a control member 34, integral with the neck, and a thrust along arrow B, the lifting of the neck is automatically obtained, then its angular displacement. .
The cover 9 carries a circular protective part 27 which may bear the initials: of the- owner of the lighter. This part 27 has a threaded stud 28 which can be screwed into a threaded hole 29 made in the cover. This piece of protection. 27 closes the housings 30 formed in the cover and intended to receive reserve pyrophoric stones.
To allow the replacement of the pyrophoric stone, it is necessary to disengage the arm 21 and to rest its end on the face 35 of the boss 18. This operation can easily be carried out by any user using a key 38 housed in the fuel tank. This key has a diametrical slot 41 made in its end, in order to make it possible to grip the arm 21 and to move it angularly against the action of the torsion spring 23.
The described lighter has multiple advantages over known lighters which can be summarized from the. as follows: 1 Large capacity: of the tank, for a relatively small size of the lighter. Indeed, a body 20 mm in diameter and 56 mm in length, for example, can form a tank of 14 em3, which represents a multiple of the capacity of the tanks of known lighters.
2 Great ease of machining, all operations consisting of turning, drilling or milling operations, which are common operations, which can be carried out quickly and inexpensively.
3 The cylindrical body 1 can be made in one piece and in a single operation with its. front wall 4 and its boss 18, by pressing an aluminum washer with metal discharge.
4 The axes of the dial and cover can be extremely strong.
5 No machining precision is necessary to ensure proper operation of the lighter.
6 The spring 11, exerting an axial thrust on the cover 9, causes the tight closing. of the wick cover although it is rigidly attached to the cover. In fact, it suffices to provide sufficient clearance between the axis 10 and. its hole 26 in the cover to obtain automatic centering of the conical seats 6 and 7.
The useful length of the torsion spring 23 can be expected to be extremely large compared to the useful length of the springs which the pyrophoric stone pressure devices of known lighters comprise. As a result, the pressure on the pyrophore stone 22 is practically. independent. the state of wear thereof.
8 Very good visibility of the lighter components when the cover is open, especially the wheel 16, the seats 6, 7, the wick and the pyrophoric stone 22.
9 Very accessible reserve of pyrophoric stones located outside the fuel tank. There is no risk of the stones becoming soaked in gasoline.
10 Easily interchangeable protection piece 27, which allows the seller to give the buyer the purchased lighter, then to have a protection piece engraved with his initials and to transmit it to the buyer. 11 Sealing of the tank 2 easily achieved by the washer e and the blind 24 by the end of the spring 23 itself. 12 Automatic centering of the conical seats 6 and 7 by the action of the spring 11 and by the fact that the closing movement of the extinguisher 8 takes place along the axis of the drill guide 5.
All these advantages combined make this lighter an article with a very low cost price compared to that of a lighter of the known type, good mechanical operation and very high strength.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 11, the wheel 16 is fully protected by the cover 9 placed in the closed position. This wheel 16 is mechanically connected to an actuating wheel 37 housed in a recess 36 made in the thickness of the front wall 4.
