Briquet.
Lighter. There are a multitude of lighters of different constructions. However, all manufacturers are still looking today for a lighter that takes up little space, has an aesthetic shape and a reduced cost price. Indeed, these three requirements are difficult to reconcile, so that in fact it is necessary to stop at a more or less successful compromise.
The present invention relates to a lighter of parallelepipedal shape, comprising a body in which is arranged a fuel tank, a hand-operated knob and against which is applied a pyrophoric stone, a semi-jumping cover coming from style the wick.
This lighter tends to make it possible to achieve a compact construction, with an aesthetic appearance and a reduced cost price, by the fact that the wheel pivots on an axis at least approximately parallel to the body of the lighter and on the end. of which is articulated the semi-popping cover.
The accompanying drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the lighter.
Fig. 1 in. Is a sectional view along the line I-I of FIG. 2, the cover being closed.
Fig. 2 is a side view, the cover being open.
Fig. 3 is a side view, the cover being open.
The lighter shown in the drawing comprises a body 1 of generally parallelepiped shape = that, in which is arranged a tank \) for the fuel. On one of the front walls of the parallelepiped is fixed a drill guide tube 3, the axis of which is approximately parallel to the axis of the body 1 and to an axis 4, one of the ends of which is introduced into a housing arranged in said front wall.
This axis 4 is made integral with the body of the lighter by a needle screw 5. On this axis is pivoted a wheel 6 with frontal teeth. The latter is integral with a control member 7 also pivoted on the axis 4.
This pin 4 has a head 8, housed in a recess of the control member. Finally, this head 8 is surmounted by a support 9 on which a cover 10 is hinged. For this purpose, the support and the cover are crossed by a pin 11 arranged perpendicular to the axis 4. The cover is subjected to the action of a spring 12 tending to keep it in its two extreme open and closed positions.
Thus, the opening and closing movements must be initiated. by hand, until the spring has passed through a neutral position from which it opens and automatically closes the cover. This type of cover will be referred to below for clarity of the text as "semi-popping cover". This spring is placed in a housing 18 formed in the cover and pushes a piston 14 against part of the support 9.
This cover has a recess to allow the passage of the wheel and its control member and a part 15 intended to come to cap the wick. This part 15 has a width a smaller than the width b of the parallelepiped and is intended to be housed between two cheeks 16 integral with the body 1.
Finally, a pyrophoric stone 17 is applied by a spring 18 against the carpet 6.
The operation of the lighter described above with reference to the drawing is as follows: As shown in FIG. 1, the cover is held in the closed position by the spring 12 applying the piston 14 to a part 19 of the support located in a plane approximately parallel to the axis 4.
To cause the lighter to ignite, it is first necessary to open the cover against the action of the spring 12. As soon as the piston comes into contact with a part 20 of the support located in a plane approximately perpendicular to the axis 4 , the spring causes the complete opening of the cover and tends to maintain the latter in this position. The user can then actuate the knob by acting with the thumb on the periphery of the control member 7. In order to facilitate this actuation, the position of the axis 4 and the diameter of the control member are chosen so that the periphery of the latter comes at least approximately flush with the edges c of the parallelepiped.
Thus, the control member protrudes slightly from three of the faces of the parallelepip. The rotation imparted to the control member is transmitted to the dial which, rubbing against the pyrophoric stone, causes a spark. The flame is then protected by the two side cheeks 16 connected to the body 1.
These walls each have a light 21 at their base. These lights: provide passage to the fresh air necessary for combustion and maintenance of the. flame.
As can easily be seen from the above and from the examination of the drawing, this lighter allows a construction of a very low cost price, by the fact that the number of parts necessary is reduced to a minimum, while keeping parts easy and quick to machine.
In addition, it is possible, on the one hand, to reduce the thickness b of the lighter, thanks to the fact that the cover is articulated on the end of the axis of the wheel and, on the other hand, to re reduce its width d, because the spring of the semi-popping cover is housed in the latter.
Thanks to these two peculiarities and to the fact that the wheel has a front toothing, the front face of the lighter is freed from all the accessories and accessory devices necessary for the articulation of the cover, the control of the latter, the application of stone against the thumbwheel, thumbwheel control and other devices found in various types of lighters. currently on the market.
However, despite these advantages, the lighter retains an approximately parallelepipedic and aesthetic shape, as can be seen from the accompanying drawing.
In addition, as in other lighters, the spring of the pyrophoric stone can be provided very long and therefore very flexible, so that it practically always exerts the same thrust on the stone, regardless of the state of wear. of it.
Finally, this lighter, provided with a semi-popping cover, still has a very real advantage over known lighters of this type. Indeed, the flame is protected by the cheeks 16 against drafts, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, by placing the lighter horizontally, the flame rises between the two cheeks and is formed above the wall of the lighter. The user then no longer risks, by striking the wick with the end of his cigarette, of suffocating the flame. In addition, this feature also has a great advantage for smokers, since it allows the lighting of the pipe.
In the closed position of the cover, the projection 15 of the latter completely closes the space formed between the side cheeks 16.
