The lighter comprises a housing 2 (fig. 3), with upper part 4, middle part 6 and lower part 8, the latter and upper part 4 being removable, so that it is possible to assemble, replace or repair, when desired or necessary, the igniter, designated as a whole by 10.
The upper part 4 has, on its upper edge 12, an opening 14 providing passage for the gas coming from a burner 16. Parts 6 and 8 of the housing have internal partitions 18 constituting compartments serving to house the essential parts of the burner. lighter.
In the housing 2 is also a console 20 placed in the housing part 4, forming an integral part of the upper part of the partition 18. All the operating parts of the igniter 10 are mounted on this partition.
The burner 16 is held in place on the console 20 by means of consoles 22 and there. part of a carburetor 24 in the form of a Venturi tube in which there is a needle 26 held in position by a console 28. The needle 26 is connected to an accunulator chamber 30 carried by the console 28, the upper part of the valve. the chamber being connected to a pipe 32.
This is extended by an auxiliary pipe 34 which rises first, then forms iui circular ring which covers the edge of the opening 14, then descends at 36 to be connected to a gas inlet pipe 38.
The upper end 40 of the pipe 38 is connected to the closed end of the cylinder case 42 in which a piston 44 slides. One end 46 of this piston carries a rod 48, on the free end of which a rod pivots. ignition 50. On this bar, an igniter 50 pivots in turn, the end of which is close to a cerium element 54.
A spring 56, one end of which is fixed to the console 20 and of which. the other pushes the bar 50 from below, lifts this bar and, consequently, maintains the igniter 56 against the cerium element 54, during the reciprocation of the piston 44 in the cylinder 42, to give a rain of sparks when the igniter moves to the left.
The inner end 58 of the pipe 38 is connected to a shutter 60, by means of an elastic tube 62, the. central part 64 passes through the shutter 60, and its other end is connected by a connector 66 to a gas outlet 68.
This is carried by a console 70 threaded to the console 20 and it comprises a chamber 72 (fig. 5) in which is a filter 74. In the bottom of this outlet 68 is screwed a needle 76, of the type of. a hypodermic needle, with passage 78, descending through the partition 18, as seen at 80 in FIG. 3.
The end 82 of the needle 76 descends through a sealed closure 84 placed in the neck of a gas tank 86 containing liquefied gas, for example propane, at a pressure of about 10 kg / m 2.
To limit the back and forth movement of the piston 44 in the cylinder 42, during the operation of the igniter, the cylinder carries on its front end 88 a flange 90, directed inward, forming a seat for one end of the cylinder. 'a spring. 92. The other end of this spring bears against the surface 46 of the piston 44. A console 94, fixed to the console 20, supports the cylinder 42 in the working position.
The burner 16 comprises a housing 96 which can, if desired, be cylindrical in shape, the upper part 98 of the burner being placed on the opening 14 of the housing 2, below the ring formed by the pipe 34. , a passage 100 being provided in the burner, as seen in FIGS. 3 and 9.
This passage 100 receives a tu bular extension 102 exiting the housing 96, above the edge of the cerium element 54, thereby directing the sparks thereof into the housing 96 of the burner when the actuator is activated. igniter 52.
The housing 96 has a shoulder. 104 and a flange 106 for carrying a burner nozzle 108 in an appropriate position, slightly below the spark passage 100 and above the outlet end 110 of the carburetor 24.
It will be noted that the needle 26 with its pipe is placed in the. constricted portion 112 of the Venturi tube. The carburetor 24 has an inlet opening 114 slightly. enlarged to allow air to enter freely into the chamber where it mixes with the fuel, thus giving an easily combustible mixture during operation of the briquet.
It can also be noted that the nozzle 108 comprises a gas and air mixing chamber 116 with a central opening 118 as well as several gas passages 120 serving. it seems to the passage of gas passing through the nozzle. This particular method of construction of the burner and of the carburetor 24 advantageously maintains the suitable intensity of the flame produced, from which it follows that the flame does not go out in the case of violent air currents directed at the flame. burner opening 14.
In order to regulate the passage of the fuel at high pressure in the shutter 60, the. elastic part 64 of the tube 62 is. held between two clamping members 124 and 126 (fig. 7). These clamping members comprise a stirrup straddling an axis 130 mounted in the body of the shutter 60 and preferably integral with an arm 7.32 fixed to the console 20.
The member 124 is preferably fixed, while the other, 126, is. flexible, is slightly longer, its free end having a notch 134, in which is housed a trigger bar 136.
This bar 136 is articulated on a wise bos 138 by means of a pivot 140. It is provided below with a projection 142 coming in. taken on the end of the member 126, the end 144 of this bar extending, at the rear, towards a cam 146 on which the inclined end 148 of the bar bears. To keep the bar in a suitable operating position, a spring 150, attached to the console 20, tends to lower this bar.
This is held in place by a bos sage or plunger 152 sliding in a socket 154 formed in the body of the shutter 60, between the clamping member 126 and a leaf spring 158 fixed to the body of the shutter. 'ob turator. A hand operated button 156 slides in housing 4, on the other side of spring 158 to actuate plunger 152 and, therefore, bar 136 when pushed into housing.
The gas tank contains an elongated cartridge 160, the bottom 162 of which is closed and comprising, in its upper part 164 (FIG. 4), a neck 166 projecting inside the cartridge. The base of the neck 166 forms a passage 168 with an inward curved edge 170.
The upper edge 172 of the neck 166 widens outwards, as can be seen, in order to maintain, while ensuring the closure, a cover with flange 174. This cover has a part 176 pressed downwards, entangled in a cone, with passage 178, for a needle 76 and which serves as a guide when the needle 76 is inserted during the installation of the gas tank.
In the neck 166, there is housed a lining 180 made of a plain elastic material having. in the bottom a recess 182 and a central projection 184, serving as a closure around the needle 76 when the latter passes through it.
In the cartridge 160 0 and in the immediate vicinity of the neck 166 there is a filter 186 preventing the fluid from leaving the cartridge in the liquid state and which facilitates the gasification of the liquefied gas before passing in the opening 78 of the needle, in particular when the reservoir see 86 is other than in a vertical position.
To prevent solids from falling into the housing 96 of the burner 16 where it is deposited, a grid 188 (fig. 2 and 3) is placed on the opening 14, in the passage formed by the ring 190 of the auxiliary tube. liaire 34.
In operation, when the shutter 60 is opened by pressing the button 156, a certain quantity of flammable gas passes into the tube 38. However, only a determined quantity of gas is released, because at the end of the stroke of the shutter, the bar 136 is lifted by the cam 146, thus freeing the end 134 of the clamping member 126 which, consequently, returns to the tube 64, closing it to interrupt the flow. gas flow in this tube.
In this way, only a certain quantity of gas is released which passes through pipe 38 into tubes 36 and 40.
From the latter, gas goes into cylinder 42, causing piston 44 to move rapidly to the left. As the spring 56 tends to lift the rod 50, the igniter 52 frictionally engages the surface of the cerium 54. The sparks thus produced are directed into the passage 100 and, from there, into the burner 16.
At the same time, the gas passing through the tube 36 passes through the ring 190, then through the tube 34 and the chamber 30. From this, the gas leaves through the line 26 to go, with a certain quantity of air. , in the carburetor 24 and, finally, in the nozzle 108 located in the top of the burner 16 where it ignites by means of the sparks produced by the igniter 52, as was said above.
The ignited gases heat the ring 190 by expanding the gases therein. In addition, the gas, which first entered the cylinder 42, is expelled from it, when the piston recedes under the action of the spring 92, and passes into the pipe 36 and, from there, into the ring 190 By restricting the passage through gas line 36, there is only a limited amount of gas that can pass through. As a result, there is only a limited amount of gas that burns in the burner 16, normally for three to four seconds. By activating the shutter 60 several times, it is possible to release additional gas from the reservoir 86, if a longer combustion is desired.
When the gas from the active reservoir 86 is exhausted, the bottom 8 of the housing 2 can be removed to remove this reservoir. It can then be easily replaced by another of the spare tanks 192 or 194 by pushing it upwards until the needle 76 pierces the closure 89 and crosses it, as we said above. .
Note also that, if desired, the needle 76 can be longer, as shown in. fig. 10, in which case the filter 186 can be omitted. It has been found that the filter 74, when it is placed in the chamber 72 of the outlet 68 as in FIG. 5, is very sufficient for the purpose sought.
It can also be noted that gas tanks 86, 192 and 194 can be loaded and closed in the most practical manner. can then be made available to users of the lighter.
Fig. 9 shows a variant, in particular as regards the shutter 200 and the control mechanism 202 giving the ignition spark of the gases in the bi2ileur.
The shutter 200 comprises a housing 204 with support 206 for a part of the elastic gas tube 64, this support 206 being mounted on the console 20.
In the support 206 there is the passage 208 for a shutter member 210, in the form of a ball or a roller, compressing the elastic tube 64 to limit the passage of gas in the latter.
The member 210 is held in place by an elastic stopper 212 through which a rod 214 passes. The end of this rod is articulated on a lever 216 pivoting on an axis and carrying., At the other end, a hook 218 whose role we will see later.
Very close to the lever 216, a trigger wheel 220 is mounted on a central axis 222 and carries, on one side, a trigger pin 224. At a point. diametrically opposite the wheel pivots a lever 226 connected to the lever 228 actuating the igniter and pivots on an axis 230. On the lower end of the lever 228 is coupled one end of a tension spring 232, the other end of which is taken in a hook 234. The top of the lever 228 carries a yoke 236 surrounding an axis fixed to an igniter bar 238.
This slides in the frame 240, fixed on the console 20 by means of screws, the front part of the bar 238 carrying an igniter 242 pivoting on an elastic bar 244 fixed to the bar 238. The elastic bar 244 hand holds the point top of the igniter 242 against the surface of the piece of cerium 54, thereby bringing the igniter into the operating position during the action of the spark apparatus.
To operate the latter, it is. provided a piece 246, on which the finger bears. and which pivots on an axis 248. It carries a stopper 250 at its upper end 252. A spring 254 pushes the part 246 towards its rest position, shown in dotted lines.
On the part 246 pivots a transverse lever 256 having a notch 258 engaging the lug 224. The end 260 of the lever 256 normally engages the hook 218 of the lever 216. When the latter moves. to the limit of its anti-clockwise rotation when part 246 is pushed inwards, the lever 256 has moved inwards by a sufficient amount so that the 'notch 258 passes beyond the lug 224. The lever 228 is then free and is pulled by the spring 232. The result is that the end 242 of the igniter bears on the cerium 54, giving a continuation of sparks sent through passage 100, to burner 16.
To prevent foreign matter from entering and accumulating in the burner 16, a cover 262 slides under the top 4 of the housing 2, below the opening 14.
The cover 262 has an opening 264 and an extension 266, provided with a pivot 268 on which is engaged a yoke 270 of the end of a lever 272 which pivots on a pin 274 carried by the console 20. One end 276 of a rod 278 est. articulated on the lever 272, near its pivot 274, the other end 280 of this rod is attached to the end 260 of the transverse lever 256. As a result, when the part 246 is actuated in an anti-clockwise direction. 'a watch, which causes the lever 228 to actuate the parts 242 and 54 giving sparks, the opening 264 of the cover 262 comes into place on the opening of the burner 16, to allow the wise passage of the combustion gas from this one. When we release the part 246, its spring 254 la.
rotates in a clockwise direction and, by the connection formed by the pins 256, 278 and 272, the cover 262 returns to the closed position, which closes the passage of the burner and the opening 14.
In order to achieve a second closure for the opening 14, the top 4 of the housing 2 is provided with a cover 282 actuated by hand, as seen in FIG. 14, turning on a pivot 284 carried by the upper part 4- and held in the closed position by a small boss on the top 12 of the housing 2.
Figs. 10, 11 and 12 show another variant of the lighter in which the burner 16 comprises an insulating cap. 286 carrying a wire 288 whose end is. protrusion in the passage 118 of the beak and whose point is. voi sine of a set of spark-forming electrodes 290.
Hot wire 288 is connected by high voltage wire 292 to an induction coil 294 one side of which is connected by wire 296 to a capacitor 298 set to. ground by a wire 300. The wire 300 also joins the capacitor to one side 304 of the switch 302 forming a shutter.
The capacitor 298 is also connected by a wire 306 to the other terminal 308 of the switch 302. The two terminals 304 and 308, respectively, have isolated contact points at 310 and 312 (fig. 12).
These contact points, with angular faces, are normally juxtaposed, as shown, and they are resiliently mounted, so that, during the back and forth of the shutter 302, the contacts 304 and. 308 engage by passing towards each other in one direction and. slide over each other, then return elastically to the normal position. When returning or closing shutter 303, the opposite sides of the contact points come into contact and slide over each other on their isolated portions 310 and 312, after which they return to the normal position.
In this way and during the operation of the shutter 302, the contacts 304 and 308 turn on and off the electric current coming from the batteries 314 and passing through the induction coil 294 and the capacitor 298, thus giving a hot spark. between the electrodes 290 and the end of the wire 288, to ignite the gases passing through the burner 16.
The batteries 314 are connected by a wire 316 to the coil 294 and they are isolated from the housing by an insulating sleeve 320. A spring 322 pushes the batteries in place and at the same time ensures a grounding of the electrical system.
As seen in fig. 10, the housing 2 is provided with a partition 324 separating the reserve tank 192 from the active tank 86 which is maintained in the desired state, as said above and shown in FIG. 3.
It can be noted that the needle 76, with its pipe, can be very long (fig. 10), if desired, so that its tip 326 reaches any desired height of the liquefied gas contained in the active reservoir 86.
The switch 302, forming a shutter, comprises a button 328 mounted in a socket 330 of the housing 2, with rod 332 not sant in a wall 334 of the socket relative to which it is held in place by a nut 336, the rod 332 (Fig. 11) has an extension 338 passing through a guide ring 340 of a guard 342 and ending in a ball housing 344.
Guard 342 is circular in cross section and carries a ball 346 which can roll on it at will unless it is in the bottom of the guard and in line with a ball housing 348. This is provided. at the end of a rod 350, the end of which is held in place by the end of a spring 352, the other end of which is hand held by a boss on one side of the sole 20.
The rod 350 carries, on one side, a projection forming the elastic frame of the contact. 304 and, on the other side, a valve rod 354. This rod passes through an elastic gasket 356 forming. pivot, placed in a housing. valve 358, a ball valve 362 being freely mounted. on the 360 end of the rod. The ball 362 normally closes the wise outlet 36.1 of the connector 366 opening into the annular tube 190 (FIG. 10) of the briquet.
The gas inlet 66 (fig. 11) opens into the valve housing 358 and the gas pressure applies the ball 36? against the outlet passage 364. Consequently, by pressing the button 328, if the ball 362 is in its position of engagement in the guard 342, in the alignment of the housings 34-1 and 348, the thrust exerted on the rod 350 causes the contacts 304 and 308 to slide over each other by feigning the circuit going to the electrode 288. By pressing. on the shutter 302, the. rod 350 moves back compressing the spring 352.
This change of position of the. rod 350 causes the rod 354 to pivot in the elastic gasket 356 by moving the ball 362 away from its seat constituted by the end of the outlet passage 364. When the push-button 328 is released, the res out 352 brings the rod back 350 in the normal position, the rod 354 pivots clockwise, returning. the ball 362 on its seat and closing the outlet 364.
When the ball 362 opens the passage 364, the gas passes from the inlet tube 66 into the valve housing 358, then into the passage 364 from where it arrives at the nozzle 108 or burner 16, to shine there.
In fig. 13 which represents a slight variant of the device of FIG. 10, one can use any type of shutter 302, but comprising however a set of contacts 304 and 308, as above. However, in this case, a set of dry cells 314 is used, in electrical contact with a plate 368 from which leaves a wire 370 connecting the batteries to a terminal 372 connected to the contact 308.
In burner 16 there is a platinum or palladium catalyst 374. One side of catalyst 374 is grounded, while the other side is connected by wire 376 to contact 304. As a result, when contacts 304 and. 308 of switch 302 move relative to each other, as said, a circuit passing through the catalyst is closed and the catalyst is heated enough to ignite the gas passing through burner 16.
We see. that the lighter described above, following one or the other of its variants, can be used not only to light cigarettes or cigars, but also that it can be used to light gas coming out of a pipe or to give a flame bridge 'any other application.
