Process for the preparation of a triazole series dye. It has been found that a triazole series dye can be prepared using the dye of the formula
EMI0001.0003
treated with oxidizing agents until the triazole is formed.
When dry, the dye obtained is a dark powder which dissolves in water with a brownish-red color and dyes cotton from a bath containing Glauber's salt in brownish tones which, when treated with copper salts, give a light- and washfast red-brown.
The dye of the above formula used as starting material for the process is known from German Patent No. 385809 (Ta belle, page 14). To carry out the present process, all oxidizing agents can be used which are able to oxidize the o-aminoazo group to the triazole ring.
An ammoniacal copper salt solution is preferably used. Since in this case copper complex compounds of the dye are formed, the product obtained here has to be decoppered in a further operation, which can also follow the oxidation directly. This can be done in a manner known per se, for example by means of mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid or by means of hydrogen sulphide or hydrogen sulphide releasing agents such as sulphides, in particular soluble sulphides.
Example: 6.0 parts of the disodium salt of the dye of the formula known from patent specification no. 335809 (table, page 14)

are dissolved at 95 in 200 parts of water and treated with an ammoniacal copper solution consisting of 7.5 parts of crystalline Copper sulfate, 30 parts of water and 22 parts of 24% ammonia solution are added, where> the dye fails completely. The mixture is stirred for about 6 hours at 90 to 95 and allowed to cool. The course of the oxidation can be followed by taking samples; The starting material dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a blue-violet color, which quickly turns into a bluish red.
The dye is filtered off, washed with water and boiled for 6 hours in about 4% hydrochloric acid solution in 300 parts to convert it into the copper-free compound. After filtering off and washing, it is converted into the sodium salt in the usual way by reacting with soda or sodium hydroxide solution.
Instead of separating the dye after oxidation, it can be boiled directly after adding hydrochloric acid to the reaction mixture.
