Meuble transformable.
La fig. 1 est une vue de côté, en position repliée, d'une première forme d'exécution pré sentant un bâti vu .en Coupe; La fig. 2 montre le même meuble déplié, le cadre du lit étant en partie arraché; La fig. 3 est un schéma indiquant une position intermédiaire;
La fig. 4 est une élévation de côté d'une deuxième forme d'exécution vue en position dépliée pour servir de lit, un panneau for mant cache de ce côté étant enlevé; La fig. 5 est une vue correspondante du même meuble à la position de divan; La fig. 6 est un plan partiel d'une extré mité du meuble déplié, le matelas enlevé; La fig. 7 est une coupe verticale suivant la ligne VII-VII de la fig. 4;
Les manoeuvres de dépliement et de re pliement sont très simples; le meuble étant fermé, il suffit de soulever d'abord légère ment le siège b, puis de tirer le lit vers l'avant par l'élément du cadre placé à l'avant et formé des éléments cs et du- longeron anté rieur pour provoquer le redressement complet du siège et le dépliement. du lit;
dans ce mou- veinent, l'arrière du siège, cessant .d'abord d'être soutenu par les roulettes 12, s'abaisse en même temps qu'il s'écarte du mur; d'autre part, l'élément du cadre placé à l'arrière est relevé jusqu'à la position horizontale en sui vant le déplacement. vers l'avant des autres éléments du lit;
le travail absorbé pour soulever les éléments c2 de la tête et du pied et la lite rie est fourni en grande partie par la descente du siège b -et la détente des ressorts 21;
Ces pieds sont articulés en 24 sur les éléments c, du cadre,de sommier et sont re liéµ par ,de biellettes 25 aux éléments c2 de celui-ci, les points d'articulation étant; choisis ;
de manière que ces pieds, 22 restent à peu près verticaux et contmuent de soutenir l'âr- rière du meuble pendant la première partie de son repliement, jusqu'à ce- que les roulettes 12 des pieds,11 solidaires du siège de divan b s viennent à leur tour, porter sur le sol;
Dans les formes d'exécution représentées, il est inutile de prévoir une traverse inter médiaire s'étendant sur toute la, longueur du. meuble, ce qui rend la. fabrication encore plus simple et permet d'abaisser le plus possible le sommier du lit à. la position repliée. L'e-s- pace disponible entre le sommier et le siège de divan b est par suite amplement suffisant pour loger un matelas très épais et conforta ble avec tous les accessoires de literie utiles;
Convertible furniture. The present invention relates to a transformable piece of furniture which can alternatively serve as a sofa and a bed, comprising a seat which can be raised vertically and a bed arranged to fold longitudinally, to be housed under the folded seat and to develop forward. when that seat is raised.
This piece of furniture is characterized in that the base of the bed is constituted by a flexible sheet connected by tension springs to the sides of a frame made of angle irons, the head and the foot of which are each divided into three articulated parts by means of pivots located at a certain distance above this web when this frame is developed flat.
Three embodiments of the transformable piece of furniture which is the subject of the invention are shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side view, in the folded position, of a first embodiment presenting a frame seen in section; Fig. 2 shows the same piece of furniture unfolded, the bed frame being partly torn off; Fig. 3 is a diagram indicating an intermediate position;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a second embodiment seen in the unfolded position to serve as a bed, with a hidden forging panel on that side removed; Fig. 5 is a corresponding view of the same piece of furniture in the couch position; Fig. 6 is a partial plan of one end of the unfolded furniture, the mattress removed; Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken along line VII-VII of FIG. 4;
Fig. 8 is an elevation of a third embodiment, in the unfolded state; Fig. 9 is an elevation of the same embodiment in the folded state; Fig. 10 is a partial vertical section taken along the line X -X of FIG. 8.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to, 3 presents a fixed frame which comprises two frames or side panels a which can be of any shape and construction appropriate to the style of the furniture and which are connected at the front by a cross member a, placed near the ground and at the rear by a cross member a2 which is placed higher.
Between the panels a can accommodate and move a sofa seat b and a bed c. Seat b consists of a box spring covered with any suitable padding. It can pivot on two journals 1 carried by arms 2 articulated at 3 on the panels a; the oscillation of each of these arms is limited by means of a tenon 4 which is integral with it and which moves in a curved wall 5 of a fitting fixed to the corresponding panel.
The bed has a rectangular frame of angle irons, the head and foot of which are each targeted in three parts c ', c2, c3 connected by joints at 6 and 7 so as to be able to be folded along two axes parallel to its long sides or spars; on the other hand, it comprises a base consisting of steel ribbons 8, crisscrossed and stretched by means of tension springs 9 placed between their ends and the sides of the frame.
An important feature to note consists in that the plane of the web of ribbons 8 and of the springs 9 of the developed bed base is situated a little below the folding axes 6 and 7, so that the. tension of the springs 9 strongly urges the frame, once unfolded in the direction of the arrows F to the planar shape (fig. 2), to be folded up beyond this position; the elements c ', e2, c3 however abut against each other so as to be kept aligned under the effect of this tension.
It follows that a load, even considerable, applied to the base at any point, can in no case cause the folding of the frame in the opposite direction of the arrows F, since it will tend on the contrary to s' oppose it more strongly due to the increase in the tension of the resources 9.
The element of the frame placed at the rear of the cabinet, and consisting of the elements ci of the head and the foot as well as by 1ç, the corresponding lonzeron of the frame, is rigidly fixed to the seat b, to which it is also connected. by struts 10 increasing the strength; each element c 'comprises, beyond the articu lation 6, an extension 11 provided with a wheel 12 which bears on the ground when the cabinet is folded (fig. 1).
On each element c2 is articulated, at 13, a lever 14 with two branches, the lower branch of which is terminated by a roller 15 and the opposite branch of which is connected, on the one hand, to the extension 11 by a connecting rod 16 and, on the other hand, to a tab 17 secured to the corresponding CI element, by a connecting rod 18.
In order to hide the bottom of the cabinet, a panel d which can be trimmed or decorated in the style of the cabinet and which is secured by a rod 20, articulated on the rod 18, has been articulated under the front spar of the frame, at 19, to take a vertical position both when the cabinet is folded and when it is unfolded.
Fig. 2 shows that in this last position, the panel d comes to rest on the ground and helps support the bed. The latter is thus supported both, at the rear, by the seat b itself resting by the arms 2 on the bottom, the mortises 5, in the middle, by the vertical branch of the levers 14, and at the 'front, by the panel d, without any overhang.
When the cabinet is folded up, the elements c1 and c. Of the head and the foot of the frame are upright vertically and the elements c lowered very close to the ground; the flexibility of the ribbons 8 allows the bed base to easily follow the deformations of the frame.
The space between this base and the underside of the seat b is relatively very high and sufficient to accommodate very thick flexible bedding e, without the height of the seat b above the ground, when the cabinet is folded up, being higher than in the most comfortable sofas.
The unfolding and folding maneuvers are very simple; with the unit closed, it suffices to first lift the seat b slightly, then to pull the bed forwards by the frame element placed at the front and formed by the elements cs and the front spar to cause the seat to fully upright and unfold. bed;
in this movement, the back of the seat, first ceasing to be supported by the casters 12, lowers at the same time as it moves away from the wall; on the other hand, the frame element placed at the rear is raised to the horizontal position by following the displacement. towards the front of the other parts of the bed;
the connecting rods 16 also oblige the elements c3 of the head and the foot to fall back and the levers or feet 14 to stand up, the .rollers 15 coming to bear on the ground. The bedding naturally unfolds on the box spring and is supported by the. tapes 8 and by the springs 9 over its entire width to the inside of the seat b.
The folding maneuver consists of pushing back the element of the frame placed at the front so as to cause the reverse movements of the previous ones.
The maneuvers are facilitated by the action of springs 21 stretched between the connecting rods 16 and the elements c2 of the head and of the foot, and if necessary by that of any other springs suitable for balancing all the moving parts during their movements. , It will be observed that, during the unfolding phase,
the work absorbed to lift the elements c2 of the head and of the foot and the bed is provided in large part by the descent of the seat b -and the relaxation of the springs 21;
the main resistance to overcome is that opposed by the springs 9 at the instant when the plane of the bed base approaches the axes 6, 7 and must cross this neutral position to leave the three elements cl, c2, c3 s' align.
This resistance is easily overcome because at this moment the elements c, and c3 form very obtuse angles with the corresponding element c and because the inertia of the moving masses intervenes favorably.
The drawing shows that the cabinet can be placed against a wall and has a fixed backrest f, in front of which the seat b can be lifted up without being hampered (fig. 2).
Instead of being made up of crisscrossed steel ribbons, the bed base could be made up of any flexible sheet, of metal or other threads, elastically stretched in the folding frame of the bed in any suitable manner.
The cabinet shown in Figs: 4 to 7 differs from the previous one in that it rests on the ground without the aid of a fixed frame and that it is provided. additional legs 22 with casters 23 to support it in the bed position.
These feet are articulated at 24 on the elements c, of the frame, of the bed base and are re bound by rods 25 to the elements c2 thereof, the points of articulation being; choose ;
so that these feet, 22 remain approximately vertical and continue to support the rear of the furniture during the first part of its folding, until the rollers 12 of the feet, 11 </ B > integral with the sofa seat bs come in turn to carry on the floor;
at the end of this folding, the feet 22 are slightly raised, as shown in fig: 5.
On each side of the cabinet is provided a vertical panel 26 serving to hide the mechanism and mounted by means of tabs 27 fixed to the corresponding median element e2 of the foot or the head of the care frame When the cabinet is folded up,
the top of this panel is flush with the corresponding side of the seat of .divan b and its lower edge extends a short distance above the ground; when the piece of furniture is developed, this panel is raised with the base, as shown in fig. 4.
The cabinet shown in Figs. 4 to 7 is extremely simple and has a maximum surface area of use, relative to its external dimensions, both as a bed and as a sofa.
The folding and unfolding maneuvers are always so simple and easy since it suffices to open and close the cabinet without having to act on any locking member or the like. On the other hand, the.
stability of the open bed is as well assured as before, whatever the load and whatever: the place where it is applied.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 8 to 10 differs from the previous one in that we have taken advantage of the use of the additional feet 2-2 to eliminate the solitary feet I1 of the seat b and of the elements c, _ of the head and the foot of the frame box spring. For this purpose, each foot 22 is connected to the corresponding element c @, no longer by a connecting rod 25, but by an articulated lever 28: on this element c. and itself connected by the connecting rod 16 to the foot 14.
When the cabinet is unfolded, the angle formed by the foot 22 with the lever 28 is forced to open, so that: the foot 22 remains approximately vertical and the connecting rod 7.6 forces the foot 14 to: stand up ; at the same time, this foot 14 pushes back the element e., by the, connecting rod 18 and forces it to: fold back, and this connecting rod 18 pushes back, via the connecting rod 20, the integral lever 29 of the panel d so that it remains substantially vertical, as in the first embodiment.
It should be noted that, thanks to the proportions of the parts and to the position of their articulation points, it is possible to place the articulations of the feet 22 and 14 of the lever 28 and of the lever 29 directly on the elements c "cde the. head and the foot of the base frame, without the intervention of the fittings or gous sets which it was previously necessary to bring back to receive the articulation axes. It </ B > The result is a great simplification and a strong economy in the manufacture and the assembly.
In the embodiments shown, it is unnecessary to provide an intermediate crosspiece extending over the entire length of. furniture, which makes the. even simpler manufacturing and allows the base of the bed to be lowered as much as possible. the folded position. The space available between the box spring and the sofa seat b is therefore amply sufficient to accommodate a very thick and comfortable mattress with all the useful bedding accessories;
the. fig. 9 shows the importance of the empty space g which remains free above the folded mattress. Under these conditions, the bed can be made before it is closed, so that one can lie down in it as soon as it is opened.
It should be understood that the embodiments shown in figs. 4 to 10 could also include a fixed frame including armrests, a backrest and even cabinetry accessories such as lockers, etc. of any shape and style.
