Folding bed Folding beds of the conventional type generally comprise a central part, surrounded by two end parts, substantially of the same length, articulated on this central part and capable of being raised at right angles, in the folded position. These beds have lost much of the legitimate popularity they once had, due to the fact that they are nevertheless quite bulky, and in any case unsightly, and that the comfort they offer to the user is clear ment less than that of ordinary beds of the same dimensions, their elasticity being necessarily limited.
The present invention relates to a folding bed comprising a central part, between two end parts articulated on this central part and capable of being raised at a right angle in the folded position, characterized in that the feet which carry the bed in position or green are mounted on the outer parts of the frame, some of these feet being provided with a castor, and arranged in such a way that in the closed position of the bed, its central part is separated from the ground only by a distance of the order of the height of said casters, which allow the bed to be moved easily.
In this way, it is possible to gain in height of the folded bed almost the entire height of the feet in question, or to distribute part of this gain over the height and the other over the width of the folded bed. These feet can be articulated on the side members of the bed frame and be constituted by levers whose ends opposite to those which rest on the ground are articulated at the end of connecting rods, themselves articulated on the central part of the bed by intermediate connecting rods, in such a way that by closing the bed, these connecting rods tilt the legs to bring them into the vertical plane containing the side members of the end parts of the bed frame.
As a result, once the bed is closed, nothing overflows the volume limited laterally by the two end parts raised vertically; this volume is a rectangular parallelepiped which can be such that the added lengths of the base and of the two vertical sides are equal to that of a normal bed, that is to say generally 1 m. 88.
The transverse edges of the bed frame can be connected to each other by elastic longitudinal links, the points of which are attached to said transverse edges are, in the open position of the bed, at a level lower than that of the points of articulation of the two end parts of the bed frame on its central part.
Thus, any downward pressure, and in particular the weight of the user, exerted at any point inside the frame tends, when the bed is open, to maintain it in this position.
The frame is advantageously constituted by angle irons, the articulation between the central part and the end parts being on the vertical wings, the arrangement of the horizontal wings of the central part and of the extreme parts in the vicinity of this articulation being such that 'in the open position of the bed, the ends of said parts are end to end and thus constitute stops which limit the opening of the bed.
. The feet can be braced at their lower part, and this bracing in no way limits the elasticity capacity of the longitudinal elastic links connecting the transverse edges of the bed frame referred to above, nor of the elastic links. transverse possibly also connecting the frame side members. The whole of the frame, the feet, and their spacer can thus constitute a box girder and ensure the rigidity of the bed, despite its lightness.
A compensating spring can be stretched between the central part and one of the neighboring legs of this central part, so that the tension exerted on this spring increases as the opening maneuver of the bed progresses; this spring thus facilitates the closing operation of the bed and makes the opening operation less abrupt.
The accompanying drawing represents, schematically, and by way of example, one embodiment of the folding bed forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the open bed, and FIG. 2 a side view of the closed bed.
Fig. 3 schematically shows a peculiarity of the bed.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the open bed. Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the bed in an intermediate position.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the closed bed. The bed frame shown in drawing com takes a central part 1 and two end parts 2 and 3 articulated on the central part at 4 and 5.
On each side of the bed legs 6, 7, 8, 9, which keep the bed at the normal height when in the open position, are mounted on the end parts 2 and 3, no leg supporting the central part. Their extensions are connected by connecting rods 17 and 18 so as to form two parallelograms articulated with the end parts 2 and 3.
These articulated parallelograms are connected to the central part by two connecting rods 40 and 41, articulated, on the one hand, on the vertices 42 and 43 of each of these parallelograms and on the other hand, at points 44 and 45 of the part. central 1; these points of articulation 44 and 45 are arranged symmetrically with respect to the median plane of this central part.
The connecting rod 41 is arranged so as to constitute a doorbell lever; it comprises an extension 46, at the end 47 of which a connecting rod 48 is articulated, the other end of which is articulated at 49 on a gusset 50 integral with the end part 2.
A spring 51 has one end attached to a gusset 52 secured to the central part 1 and its other end to the lower part of the foot 7..
The bed frame further comprises elastic longitudinal links 23 attached to the transverse edges 21 and 22 of this frame by means of springs 24 and 25.
As can be seen schematically in a fig. 3, showing the bed in the open position, the attachment points 28 and 29 of the springs 24 and 25 which transmit to said transverse edges all the forces F exerted on the elastic connections 23 inside the frame of the bed are located on the wings horizontal angles 26 and 27 of angles constituting this frame and are thus at a level below the articulations 4 and 5 of the end parts 2 and 3 of the bed on its central part 1.
As a result, these forces F stress the end parts of the bed in the direction of arrows FI and F ,, and therefore tend to maintain the bed in the open position, a position in which the ends lower horizontal wings of the angles constituting the end parts 2 and 3 of the bed frame, being end to end with the ends of the horizontal wing of the angle iron constituting the central part 1 of the bed, limit the pivoting of these end parts 2 and 3 in the direction of arrows F, and F., and keep them in alignment with said central part.
The central feet 7 and 8, on one side of the bed, which carry the casters, are each connected to the feet which correspond to them on the other side of the bed by a spacer 32 fixed to their lower parts. They are also consolidated by inclined irons 33; the extreme legs 6 and 9 on one side of the bed are each only consolidated by a spacer 34, connecting them to the legs which correspond to them on the other side of the bed.
The longitudinal elastic links 23 are completed by transverse elastic links 35, the ends of which are also hooked by means of springs 36 to the horizontal flanges of the angles constituting the central 1 and end 2 and 3 parts of the bed frame.
A device for engaging the bed in the closed position is constituted by a leaf spring 62, one end of which is fixed to the transverse edge 21 and the other end of which carries a button 53 capable of engaging and fitting into a groove. transverse 54 formed in the other transverse edge 22 of said bed.
Thanks to this transverse groove, the engagement takes place even if a certain lateral displacement occurs between the two transverse edges 21 and 37.
When the bed is in the closed position, its central part is only separated from the floor by a distance of the order of the height of the casters which allow the bed to be moved easily (fig. 2 and 6).
