<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
(fig.7).
Dans la troisième forme d'exécution représentée aux figures 8 à 10, le cadre fdu siège est relia à la partie du sommier, sur chaque cote de celui-ci, par une bielle cou- dée 29 et par une biellette 30, les points d'articulation 31, 32, 33, 34 de l'ensemble ainsi formée étant disposés aux sommets d'un quadrilatère déformable dont le cote 31, 34 est libre de s'allonger et de se raccourcir; les longueurs des ou= tres côtés sont déterminées de façon que lors du basculement du siège vers l'avant, celui-ci est d'abord oblige de s'éle- ver par rapport au sommier (figure 9) avant de se rabattre verticalement en avant de celui-ci (figure 10);

Janapë - lit.- Priority of a filed patent application
In Belgian patent 'N 421,243, dated March 26, 1937, the Applicant described a sofa bed comprising a fixed frame, a sofa seat which can be raised vertically and a bed arranged to fold along two horizontal axes parallel to the backrest so that it can be lodged under the folded seat and develop forward when this seat is raised.
This arrangement makes it possible to make the maneuvers of unfolding and folding back the piece of furniture easy and to give the bed a width of approximately 1.10 to 1.20 m. while bringing the depth of the sofa back to a normal dimension after folding.
The present invention relates to a sofa bed having) in addition to the advantages of the above sofa bed, various other important advantages thanks to improvements made to its general arrangement.
The bed base is still articulated along an axis parallel to the length of the seat and the backrest, so that a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of its parts can be straightened with the part of the mattress it supports, when the piece of furniture is to serve as a sofa.
An important improvement consists in that the backrest is mounted to pivot about a horizontal axis on catte rectifiable part of the bed base and is placed in front of the latter and of the corresponding part of the mattress in the sofa position; when the unit is unfolded, this backrest tilts backwards over the bedstead and the mattress and after one, half-turn rotation is reversed behind the bed.
As a result of the lowering of the backrest which results from the folding down of the part of the bed base to which it is articulated, during the unfolding of the furniture, the height occupied by this backrest above the ground is then reduced so that the bordae of the bed on the rear side no longer presents any difficulty, the piece of furniture having been, of course, previously moved away from the wall to which it is normally leaned.
It also results from this arrangement of the tilting backrest that the part of the bed base which lifts up behind it can be relatively wide, so that it becomes possible to give the developed bed, in the direction perpendicular to the backrest, a width substantially greater than in the case of a fixed backrest, and the result is as perfect comfort as possible.
It is even possible, by using a box spring provided with a second articulation axis, to give it, according to the. nome direction of development, a dimension of nearly two meters, so that the bed allows the user to lie down perpendicular to the backrest instead of being extended parallel to the latter; the li t can even in this case receive two people at the same time.
If the bed base has only one axis of articulation, the mattress undergoes only one fold when the bed is replaced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in the form of a sofa, and this is an advantage over the previous arrangement comprising a fixed backrest. Furthermore, since the only raised part of the mattress is behind the backrest, the seat in the sofa position can be lowered and returned to the most comfortable level.
This seat can be hinged on the base of the backrest and tilted with the latter behind the furniture when unfolded for sleeping. It can also be mounted on the end of the base, either rigidly if this end can be raised, or in a hinged manner if the base only folds back.
Exemplary embodiments of a sofa bed according to this invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the first form, in a sofa position.
FIG. 2 is a side view, the side upholstery of the cabinet having been removed.
Figure 3 is a vertical section showing the seat upright against the backrest.
FIG. 4 is a similar section showing the furniture half-deployed.
Figure 5 is a vertical section showing the completely folded bed.
FIG. 6 is a schematic view of an alternative embodiment in the "sofa" position.
Figure 7 is a similar view in the "bed" position.
Figures 8 to 10 show another variant of execution in three different positions.
In the first form (fig. 1 to 5) the bed frame comprises two parts a and b articulated to one another in 1,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and composed of angle irons to which the intersecting steel strips 2 constituting the bed base are connected by coil springs 3, in a known manner. On parts a and b are articulated at 4 and 5 of the uprights or feet 6 and 7 connected to each other by a lever 8 articulated at 9 on part a and by a connecting rod 1C, also in known manner.
The backrest d is constituted by a metal frame 11 inside which are elastically stretched steel bands 12 crisscrossed and serving as support for springs 13 which support a flexible lining 14. The frame 11 is articulated in 13 on two supports 16 fixed at the end of part b of the bed, the length of these supports being approximately equal to the thickness of the part of the mattress c which must fit between the base and the backrest in the "sofa" position.
The width of part b of the bed and the position of the joints 15 on the sides of the backrest are determined so that in the "sofa" position (fig. 1,2) the lower edge of the backrest is located substantially at the bottom. level of the top of the mattress and its upper edge at the normal level of a sofa backrest, while in the "bed" position (fis. 5) the lower edge of the backrest reversed is close to the floor and its upper edge at a level of 70 to 80 cm. which makes it possible to border the bed without difficulty.
In this embodiment, brackets articulated at 17 are provided on the sides of the backrest so that they can be, sometimes supported horizontally in a cantilever (fig. 2), sometimes upright against the backrest for the deployment of the backrest. cabinet (fig. 3 and 4). The armrests can be of such a length that they touch the ground when the bed is fully extended (fi.5) so that they then help to support the overturned backrest.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The couch seat has a metal frame 18, in which crisscrossed steel ribbons 19 are stretched plastic, and one or more cushions 20 rest on these ribbons. The frame 18 is articulated at 21 on supports 22 integral with the frame 11 of the backrest and of a length such that the seat can be pressed against the padding 14.
In the example shown, the cushions 20 are removable and are removed before the seat is upright, so that it is the frame 18 and the tapes 19 which come to rest against the backrest.
In the case where the cushions 20 will be permanently fixed on the frame 18, it will of course be necessary to give the supports 22 a greater height, corresponding to the total thickness of the backrest and of the seat.
When it comes to unfolding the piece of furniture, the seat is raised against the backrest, after removing the cushions which are removable, (fig. 3), then the entire backrest and seat are tilted around the joints 15 (fig. 4) while driving part b of the bed in the direction of arrow F around joints 1, until the backrest is tilted vertically and part b lowered horizontally (fig. .5).
This deployment requires only a minimal effort because the assembly d f is substantially balanced, its center of gravity being near the axis 15 or on this same axis. On the other hand, the folding of the whole bce around the axis 1 does not give rise to a sudden fall because the backrest is connected, on each side, to the corresponding rocking foot 7, by a rod 23, of such so that the pivoting of the backrest causes the straightening of these feet 7 as well as that of the feet 6 linked to the previous ones by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
levers 8 and connecting rods 10. Thanks to this connection, the bed is progressively raised as the backrest is lowered, and it follows that the center of gravity of all the moving parts remains at a substantially level. constant.
The opposite effects occur when folding the cabinet by lifting the assembly b c e and rotating the backrest forward, so that the maneuver is also easy. The forces to be exerted can be reduced to the minimum necessary to overcome the friction of the joints and the resistance of the mattress to folding. It is also easy to overcome this last resistance by pressing a dwarf on the mattress above the joint 1 at the same time as the other hand acts on the top of the backrest in the opposite direction to . arrow F (fig. 4).
The mechanism is masked on the front and on the sides of the cabinet by appropriate linings 24, 25 fixed to the sides of the cabinet by appropriate linings 24, fixed to the part a of the base and to the sides of the backrest.
The variant shown in figs. 6 and 7 differ from the previous form of exaction in that the front part a of the bed base is now divided into two portions a ', a "connected on each side by an articulation 26, and, moreover, in that the seat f1 is fixed on the front end a 'of the bed base.
The backrest is, as above, articulated in-15 on the supports 16 integral with part b and can tilt backwards, during the deployment of the bed as has been described. On the other hand, the seat, instead of accompanying the backrest in this tilting, is straightened vertically at the same time as the part a 'of the li t is folded down horizontally around the joints 26.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In this case, when the piece of furniture is folded up into a sofa, the mattress is angled above the joints 1, on the one hand, and 26 on the other hand, and the seat is not level. not as reduced as in the previous case. This arrangement offers the advantage of allowing a noticeable extension of the dimension of the developed bed, in the direction perpendicular to the backrest, to the point that it becomes possible for the user to lie down in this direction. The length of the sofa can in this case be reduced to the desired width of the bed.
This retains the advantage of being easily edged on the side of the backrest thanks to its reduced height above the ground. The same ease is ensured at the opposite end of the bed despite the presence of the seat attached to it. (fig. 7). As before, the backrest in its inverted position can rest on the ground either through the armrests, or even directly.
In the "sofa" position, the piece of furniture preferably rests on feet 27 integral with the linings (not shown) fixed to parts a 'and a "of the frame of the bed.
In the third embodiment shown in FIGS. 8 to 10, the frame f of the seat is connected to the part of the bed base, on each side thereof, by a bent connecting rod 29 and by a connecting rod 30, the points d articulation 31, 32, 33, 34 of the assembly thus formed being arranged at the tops of a deformable quadrilateral whose dimension 31, 34 is free to lengthen and shorten; the lengths of the or = all sides are determined in such a way that when the seat is tilted forwards, it is first of all obliged to rise relative to the bed base (figure 9) before folding vertically in before it (figure 10);
this lifting allows it to pass freely over the front edge.

arrangement allows the si: ',, -, e to be folded down to the ground while raising the position of the bed base in the bed position (figure 10) and reducing the height of the seat in the sofa position to the highest level. comfortable.
