Process for the production of vat dyes. It is known that anthrimides can be converted into the corresponding carbazoles by the action of aluminum halides in the presence of pyridine, nitrobenzene, acid chlorides or common salt.
It has now been found that the molecular compounds of acid nitriles with aluminum halides also bring about the carbazole ring closure. Acid nitriles have the advantage over nitrobenzene and acid chlorides that they can also be used with anthrimides that do not have an acylamino group. Compared to the aluminum chloride-pyridine melt, the reaction temperatures are lower in the nitrile melts.
The melts made of aluminum chloride and nitriles are also distinguished by their particularly good dissolving power for high molecular weight anthrimides.
The present invention accordingly relates to a process for the production of vat dyes of the anthraquinone series, in which compounds with aromatically substituted secondary amino groups, at least one of the aromatic groups being an anthraquinone radical and an o-position in each of the substituents should be unsubstituted to the NN group, allow a condensation agent to act, characterized
that, as a condensing agent, molecular compounds of aluminum halides with acid nitriles, optionally in the presence of an excess of one of the two components, are allowed to act. As acid nitriles such. B.
in question: benzonitrile and its substitution products, as well as benzyl cyanide and aliphatic acid nitriles. Example 1 10 parts by weight of 1,1-dianthrimide are introduced into a melt prepared from 60 parts by weight of benzonitrile and 22 parts by weight of aluminum chloride. Then the temperature is slowly increased. At 750 C a reaction occurs, whereupon the temperature rises to approx. 89 o C by itself. The mixture is then stirred at 80-85 ° C. for a further 10 minutes.
After it has cooled, the melt is introduced into a mixture of 110 parts by weight of 30% strength sodium hydroxide solution and 1000 parts by weight of water. So much chlorine liquor is added until hypochlorite is detectable, then the nitrile is blown off with steam. The product crystallizes from nitrobenzene in yellow needles and is identical to the diphthaloylcarbazole which is obtained by the action of aluminum chloride-pyridine on 1,1-diane brimide.
Example 2: In a melt prepared from 40 parts by weight of benzonitrile and 10 parts by weight of aluminum chloride, 6 parts by weight of 4.5'-diber) zarnino-1.1'-dianthri are added at about 701 C - entered mid.
