Electric iron. The present invention relates to an electric iron, comprising a positive current circuit switch device.
Its purpose is to combine the switch device in such a way in the iron to pass, that it closes the circuit of the current when the handle of the iron is grasped by the hand, as is the case during the use of the iron. iron, and that it cuts the circuit when the handle is released, this device being such that when the iron rests on the heel, the circuit can at the option of the operator, either remain cut or be closed.
The object of the invention is characterized in that a switch interposed in the circuit for supplying current to the heating element and normally open is housed in the handle of the iron and comprises a closing lever in the form of an arc projecting from the handle along the underside thereof, to be actuated by the hand gripping this handle, and in that a device allows at will to turn off the switch when the meal iron is resting on the heel, to ensure that the iron is heated before use.
The appended drawing represents, to by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the complete set iron; Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section of the handle of the iron and of the switch mechanism arranged therein; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along the line 3-13 of FIG. 2; Firr. 4 is a plan sectional view of the handle of the iron and of the switch mechanism.
The handle 10 is hollow and consists of upper and lower halves assembled by means of screws 11. The space between the upper and lower halves extends posteriorly to through the handle in the form of the central hole 12) and the two lateral grooves 13 for the threads, which are sewn into the upper surface of the lower half and are closed when the upper half is attached above them. The lower half of the handle also has slot 14 which extends longitudinally and remains open at the bottom.
The horizontal base plate 15 of suitable insulating material is attached to the upper surface of the lower half of the sleeve, so that it lies in the empty space thereof. , and this plate is provided towards its rear end with two terminal screws 16, one on each side and respectively facing the grooves 1, 3. Near its anterior end, the plate esb provided with two contacts 17, one near each side, contacts which are respectively electrically connected with the terminal screw 16 of the corresponding edge of the base plate, by means of the metal strips 18 embedded in the surface of said plate.
The conductive cable of the iron iron y is attached as usual by plug 19, but one of the lead wires of the cable, instead of being connected directly to the, terminal of said plug, is first led by one of the grooves 18 and fixed to one of the terminal screws 16 and the terminal of the the plug is then connected to the other terminal screw 16. Thus the supply circuit is interrupted, but it can be closed by electrically connecting the two contacts 17. The mechanism shown provides for this in the circumstances already mentioned.
This mechanism comprises the interrupter plate 20, disposed on the base plate 15 and mounted on a central pivot 21. This plate is shaped so that in a position of circular movement it links the contacts 17, while in a other it cuts the connection. Rod 22 is mounted in the appropriate brackets 2,3 and extends longitudinally above the base plate and above the switch plate 9-0. </ B > The rod is connected to the interrupter plate by an elastic link 24 attached to the, placed at a certain distance from the center and con- vena, wisely arranged and constructed so that when the.
rod moves inwards, the spring is subjected to a tension which turns the interrupter plate on its pivot in the direction which connects the contacts 17 and that when the movement is made in the opposite direction, the plate turns in the opposite direction to cut the circuit. The switch plate rotates with some resistance requiring that the spring be charged before the plate can rotate, in order for the switch to close and cut the circuit abruptly during operation.
The -92 rod is normally pushed out to rotate the switch plate to the interrupted position by means of the 2.5 spring which surrounds and is compressed between the guide 23 and the shoulder of the end of the rod. So when the rod is free, the switch is or green to cut the power circuit.
The bell lever rotated at the posterior end of the base plate, 15 has its 26 arm which extends upwards and engages with play in the slot 527 formed in the posterior end of the rod 22, while the other arm 28 is extends down into the slot 14 of the iron handle. The arc-shaped lever 29 is arranged lengthwise in this slot and. its anterior end is rotated to the anterior end of the bme plate 15, while its posterior end is articulated to the arm 28 of the lever elbow.
This are-shaped lever, the are of which extends downwards, is set up in such a way that when it is moved upwards, it makes the lever to wink. </ B> doorbell and pushes the rod 22 forward to close the switch. The height of this downward curve is such that the sinker is protruding from the undersurface of the handle, so that when the handle is gripped by the gripping hand, the lever rotates upward to close the handle. switch and the, keeps closed for the duration of the hush.
When the embrace has ceased, the switch opens automatically under the antagonistic action of the spring 25. Thus, the desired effect is obtained of keeping the current circuit closed during the use of the meal iron, and -automatically cut off the circuit when the use is finished.
To ensure the closing of the switch when the iron is resting on the plate, the push rod 30 is provided and mounted to slide in the bore 12 of the sleeve, so that one of its ends comes into contact with the rear part of the rod 22, while the other end protrudes a certain length beyond the rear part of the handle. When the iron is turned over to support it on the heel, said rod comes into contact with the support surface of the iron and when sufficient weight acts to overcome the tension of the spring 25 , the rod 22 will be forced to return to close the switch.
The weight of the iron itself is however not sufficient to compress said spring 25, but it will be when pressure is added to it. This done, the pin will stay in the retracted position under the weight of the iron. Thus, the iron can rest on the heel with the cooked circuit of the current cut or closed, to create
