Vehicle hood. The object of the present invention is a vehicle soup.
It comprises, like other types of known soups, a flexible cover resting on mobile supports; but it differs from it in that it comprises two fixed guides constituted by profiled bars each extending along a part of one of the sides of the curved bodywork at least near their ends and each serving guide, on the one hand, to a portion of a control chain and, on the other hand, to movable members of which at least one is driven by the chain, the whole being arranged so that, by the actuation of a maneuvering device, it is possible to produce the simultaneous movement of the chains and the dragging of the mobile members, so as to produce the folding, respectively the unfolding of the flexible cover,
which is connected to these movable members by means of support members and articulated members.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention. Fig. 1 is an axial longitudinal section of the upper part of a vehicle body provided with the cowling, showing the latter in the closed position; Fig. 2 is a plan corresponding to FIG. 1, part being torn off; Fig. 3. and 4 show the same part of the body as in fig. 1, the organs being in different positions; Fig. 5 to 7 are detail views.
The bodywork partially shown in fig. 1 and 2, comprises, at the front, a fixed trap 10 integral with the anterior ends of two side members 11 located at the upper part of the body.
This cross member constitutes the upper side of a frame 12 within which is arranged the front window of the vehicle not shown in the drawing.
The side members 11 are curved horizontally at their front part so that their front ends 13 are closer to each other than their median parts 14. At their rear part as well as at their middle part, these side members 11 are located substantially in parallel vertical planes. At the rear, they have a substantially vertical part.
16 and 17 are the frames of two side doors of which 18 and 19 are the mirrors.
On the internal face of each spar 11 relative to the vehicle is fixed a guide 20, respectively 21, having very substantially the same shape as the spar to which it is fixed, that is to say that its middle and front parts are approximately situated in a horizontal plane, the front ends of these guides, like those of the side members, being curved horizontally, so as to approach one another. The middle and rear parts of these guides are substantially contained in two parallel vertical planes, their rear ends 22 are bent substantially vertically downward with respect to their middle part.
These guides each consist of a profiled bar to which the desired shape has been given, curved horizontally at the front and vertically at the rear, before fixing it to the corresponding spar 11, by means of screws, for example.
The cross section of one of these gui des is visible at 20 in FIG. 6. It is substantially U-shaped. The part of this bar constituting the median branch of the U is fixed against the internal, vertical face of one of the side members. The side branches of this U each have on their internal face a rib 22 respectively 22a, and on their external face another rib 23, respectively 23a.
These ribs extend over the entire length of the guides which themselves extend over almost the entire length of the side members. The first ribs 22 serve for guiding and maintaining a Gall chain 24 located inside the guide so that the journals 25 of this chain are located between the ends of the ribs 22 and 22a and the links 26 , 26a are located on either side of these ribs. The height of these ribs is such that there exists between their ends, which in turn are found a space very substantially equal to the diameter of the journals 25; their width is very substantially equal to the length of the part of the journals situated between the links 26 and 26a. In this way, the chain can only slide longitudinally inside the guide 20, to the exclusion of any other movement.
The Gall chain 24 or more exactly the chain portion 24 constitutes a flexible control member, as will be explained below. By portion of chain is meant a chain having a certain length, but not constituting a loop.
The outer ribs 23 and 23a serve as guide rails for rollers 27, 28 and 29 attached to carriages 30, serving to support and move hoops 41 and a cross member, to which is attached a flexible cover, secured to the vehicle, to its back.
One of these carriages 30a is shown, FIG. 5, seen from the front, from the outside, relative to the vehicle, the guide 20 being assumed to be removed. Fig. 6 is a section of this chain along VI-VI of fig. 5.
It consists of a body 30 against which are arranged in its upper part, two rollers 27 and 28. These rollers are fixed to the body 30 by means of screws 31, around the axis of which they can rotate. Their periphery has a groove 32 of profile corresponding to that of the rib 23 on which they are arranged and which guides them.
A third roller 29, having the same shape as the other two, 27 and 28, is arranged so as to be able to move by rolling along the rib 23a which is engaged in the groove 32a which it presents. This roller is fixed to an axis 35 by means of a screw 31a. The axis 35 is itself fixed to a rod 33 capable of sliding axially, vertically, inside a corresponding recess of the body 30. A spring 34 urges the rod 33 to move upwards (fig. 6) therefore by hand hold the roller 29 applied to the rib 23a of the guide 20. There are six carriages. Three for each guide, 30a, 30b and 30c. Fig. 2.
only shows those of one of the guides, those of the other guide being arranged symmetrically with respect to the median plane of the vehicle and moving synchronously with their counterpart to the first guide, as will be seen below. They are likely to move along the guide on which they are mounted. The "front" rollers 30a are connected to the chain Gall of the corresponding guide by means of a finger 36 fixed on the latter and engaging in a recess 37, so that, if the chain is moved longitudinally, it drives the carriage along the guide.
At the rear of the vehicle are two toothed wheels, of which only one 38 is visible in the drawing, each meshing with one of the chains and connected together by means of or ganes not shown, so that, when drives one of them, by means of ganes not shown, reduction and crank or electric motor for example, the wheel corresponding to the other chain is driven at the same speed as the first, in the same direction, in view of synchronously moving the chains of the two guides and the corresponding carriages 30a.
It should be noted that, given the arrangement of the chain in its guide, it can be made to work in traction or in compression to move the corresponding carriages 30a towards the rear or towards the front of the vehicle, simply by making turn wheel 38 in one direction or the other.
The other two carriages 30b and 30c median and rear, of each guide are mounted freely on it, they are not fixed to the chain, but are driven by the latter when the car rolls over by means of stops that this chain comprises and which come at this time to make contact against these carriages, the whole being arranged so that the stop intended to drive 30b can pass freely opposite 30c to reach 30b and drive it independently of 30c which will be driven by the drink that corresponds to it. The rod 33 is able to move axially by a certain amount, 3 to 4 mm, for example, thanks to the fact that there is between its head 33a and the body 30 a certain space and that the axis 35 does not is not normally in contact laterally with this body 30.
This play of the rod 33 is intended to allow the distance separating the axis of rotation of the roller 29 from those of the other rollers to vary, with a view to preventing jamming from occurring, in particular at the places where the guides are curved.
At the rear, near the wheels 38, are two stores, not shown, tines to contain the free ends of the Gall chains.
The operation of the cowling shown is as follows: The car being completely covered by the flexible cover 50, the cross member 51 to which its front part is fixed, rests on the upper part 10 of the frame 12, where it is held by means of a spring device not shown. The cover 50 is further supported by the hoops 41, 42 and 43, to which it is attached. These arches are carried by articulated arms 40 fixed on the one hand to them and, on the other hand, to the chariots. A fourth arch 44 located towards the rear of the vehicle and carried at each of its ends by an arm 45 pivoted at 46, sup also carries the cover 50.
The arms 40 supporting the arches 42 and 43 are articulated at their ends, so as to be able to rotate in planes substantially parallel to the median plane of the vehicle.
Because the guides 20 and 21 are convergent at their front part, the arm 40a supporting the cross member 51 and the arm 40b re connecting the arch 41 to the carriage 30a have articulations 47, 48 and 49 intended to allow the carriage 30a of each guide to move throughout the guide, despite its curved shape at the front.
To open the top, from the position shown in fig. 1, the cross member 51 is released from the frame 10 in contact with which it is held by means of the spring device and the wheels 38 are rotated counterclockwise in the drawing. The chain of each guide moves and drags the corresponding carriage 30a backwards. The articulated arms 40 fold and take the position shown in FIG. 3. By continuing to act on the wheels 38, it arrives that the carriages 30a meet the carriages 30b during their movement. They drive them, as do the trolleys 30c.
Finally, the three carriages are placed one above the other at the lower part of the substantially vertical rear ends of the guides 20. The articulated arms 40 are all folded up and superimposed on the rear of the vehicle (fig. 4), the arches and cross member 51 are also superimposed at this location. The parts of the flexible cover 50 included, in the position fig. 1, between two consecutive arches, or between the transe 51 and the front arch are folded over the superimposed arches.
To cover the car, from the position shown in fig. 4, it suffices to actuate the wheels 38 in the opposite direction to that of the folding, in the direction of clockwise, in the drawing. The chain of each guide is compressed longitudinally and moves, in this guide by driving forward the corresponding carriage 30a, the dragging of the other carriages is done automatically, thanks to the stops that this chain comprises, which come to take con tact, one with the carriage 30b, the other with 30c.
When we reach the full stroke, that is to say when 30a occupies the position it has in fig 1, a locking device prevents the chain from downshifting under the influence of the tension of the chain. flexible cover and the force exerted by gravity on the rear part of the cowling. The operator having actuated the wheels 38, if the control is manual, only has to beat the cross member 51 on the frame 12 so as to fix it, by means of an automatic locking device that it behaves. The locking device is constituted by means that include the front chariots 30a allowing a stop member to engage in a notch of the corresponding guide when this carriage has reached the end of its travel, during the deployment of the capo floor.
These means also allow the carriage to go back, without any particular maneuver, when acting on the wheels 38 in the direction corresponding to the folding.
These means consist of a plate 52 fixed to a boss 53 of the body 30a by means of members 54 passing through openings 55 which it presents, so that this plate is capable of moving vertically by a certain amount, the organs 54 and openings 55 for its guiding dage.
This plate 52 has an opening 57 through which passes the member 36 serving to drive the carriage. This member 36, as shown in FIG. 5, has its free end engaged in the recess 37, of elongated shape, made in the body 30a.
The opening 57 is of such shape that it has a portion 58 forming a plane inclined relative to the axis of the chain or of the guide.
A spring 59 disposed around a rod 60 sliding freely in a part of the body 30a urges the plate 52 to move downwards and tends to bring the part of its opening forming the inclined plane 58 in contact with the member 36 .
The plate 52 is integral with a stop member 61 pressing under the influence of the res out 59, on the upper part of the rib 23, during the movements of the carriage (FIG. 6).
At the location of the guide corresponding to the extreme position of the carriage 30a, the deployment position, FIG. 1, the rib 23 has a cutout or notch 62 in which the stop member 61 engages when it arrives opposite it, under the action of the spring 59, the plate 52 then moving vertically towards the down, to come and occupy it. position shown in fig. 5. In this position, the carriage 30a of each guide is locked on its guide, any retrograde movement is impossible for it if one does not act on the chain.
To fold the cowling, it suffices to act on the wheels 38 so as to move the chains in the direction corresponding to the folding, or in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 5. Therefore, at the beginning of this movement, the member 36 leaves the end of the emptying 37 which it occupies in FIG. 5 and comes into contact with the other end, left in fig. 5, of this recess for driving the carriage. During this movement of the organ 36, during which the carriage remains im mobile, this organ 36 engages with the inclined plane 58 and forces the plate 52 to move upwards, despite the action of the res exits 59, so that the stop member 61 is released from the cutout 62 and that the carriage which is no longer locked can move, the chain continuing to move.
While stretched, the same operations take place simultaneously for the two front carriages 30a corresponding respectively to each guide.
We realize that in this way, a single person can quickly fold or unfold the soft top.
The wheels 38, instead of being done by means of a removable crank that is made to cooperate with a key located at the rear of the vehicle, could be done for example by means of an electric motor controlled from the driver's seat, the driver could then do all the operations without leaving his seat.
From the construction point of view, the fact of including a guide of the type described has the advantage of being simple. In fact, it suffices to give the profiled bars, made of brass for example, the desired shape and to fix them to the vehicle.
The control device, wheels 38, etc., of the chains might not be at the rear of the vehicle, but at the front, in which case the guide could be angled vertically at the front and the free end of the chain could be contained in a magazine located at the front of the vehicle.
The number of carriages and hoops could be lower than indicated for small convertibles, as it could be higher for large indoor pipelines and Alpine coaches.
