Process for the preparation of a dye of the dibenzanthrone series. It has been found that if benzanthrone is treated in sulfuric acid with manganese sulfate and at a higher temperature, a new compound is obtained which has the properties of a dioxydibenzanthronyl.
If one sees to it that the oxidizing agent is present in sufficient quantity, the new compound is produced in a very good yield.
It was also found that the new dioxydibenzanthronyl is converted into a new dioxydibenzmithhronyl derivative by treatment with alkaline condensation agents such as caustic alkalis!
which itself is converted into a valuable vat dye by ethylation. This new dye is a dark powder and dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a gray-blue color; when poured into water, this solution separates gray-blue flakes. in boiling nitrobenzene the dye is soluble in blue color and slightly brownish-red fluorescence; in boiling aniline it is gray-blue.
Cotton is dyed from a blue vat in gray-blue, chlorine-like shades. Example: 1 part of benzanthrone is dissolved in 20 parts of sulfuric acid monohydrate. A manganese sulfate paste is added to this solution with stirring. 0.26 part of active oxygen.
(Such a paste can be produced, for example, by electrolytic oxidation of manganese sulfate or by oxidation of manganese sulfate using manganese dioxide.) While the paste is being introduced, the temperature is allowed to rise to <B> 60 '</B> stir for another hour at 60-6.5 '. The initially orange-red solution turns violet-blue. After :
After cooling, it is poured into water, filtered, mixed with 10 parts of a concentrated bisulfite solution, boiled up, filtered, washed neutral and dry net. The dark brown crude product is freed from impurities by extraction with acetone and can be recrystallized from nitrobenzene, with Bzl, Bzl'-dibenzanthronyl formed in the process remaining in solution.
The solution of the new dioxydibenzanthronyl in -S, sulfuric acid is reddish blue and, when diluted with water, separates out red-brown flakes. It is extremely difficult to dissolve in alkali. The solution in nitrobenzene is red-brown, in pyridine a brownish red.
32 parts of 95% alcohol are then mixed with 55 parts of powdered caustic potash, while stirring, and the temperature of this mixture is slowly increased to 125-130 '. At the specified temperature, 15 parts of the new dioxydibenzanthronyl are introduced into the clear melt in small portions with stirring.
The temperature of the reaction mixture is now increased to <B> 180 ', </B> while the alcohol is distilled off at the same time, in some cases, and the melt becomes crumbly and shows a blue shimmer. Hold for half an hour at 180 to 185, then raise the temperature to 200 and hold again for half an hour at 200-2.10. The melt is then discharged, diluted with water and the dye isolated therefrom in the usual way.
A dark powder is obtained which dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a pale blue color; when this solution is poured into water, greenish blue flakes separate. The new dye is difficult to boil in nitrobenzene with a greenish blue color and brownish-red fluorescence. In boiling aniline it dissolves blue. From the violet-blue vat cotton is dyed in gray-blue tones; chlorination changes the shade to a dull blue-violet.
1 part of the dye thus obtained, finely pulverized, is then suspended in 30 parts of nitrobenzene, and 1.5 parts of sodium carbonate and 3 parts of ethyl paratoluenesulfate are added to the reaction liquid. The reaction mixture is heated to 190-200 for a few hours while stirring; then it is allowed to cool, the precipitated dye is suctioned off and cleaned: in a known manner.
