To prepare the substituted benzene-sulfonyl isocyanates, which compounds can serve as a starting material in the present process, the corresponding sulfonamide can be heated with phosgene in a suitable organic solvent, for example in dichloro-benzene or trichloro-benzene, more especially in 1.2.4-trichloro-benzene, at a temperature of about 150 to 2000, remove by distillation the solvent from the cooled reaction mixture, then isolate and purify the sulfonyl isocyanate sought by known methods, for example by crystallization.
Substituted benzene sulfonyl ureas can be prepared, for example, as set out below.
The corresponding sulfonamide is heated for 4 to 6 hours with an alkaline cyanate in aqueous alcoholic solution, then the cooled reaction mixture is filtered in order to separate the alkali salt which has precipitated therefrom, the latter is dissolved in a little water, the aqueous solution is strongly acidified with a dilute mineral acid, for example with dilute hydrochloric acid, and the substituted benzene-sulfonyl-urea is isolated therefrom in a known manner.
