PROCEDE S'OSE ïi'HÏDHO&EHAÏIOStpÊS D'ACIDES BHTAUQUES le
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Après l'hydrogénation, on peut séparer les sels pour obtenir les isomères, par exemple tous forme des 'Il. caloiques, du fait que par exemple, le sel calcique de l'acide cis-isophtalique est bien plus difficilement soluble dans l'eau que le composé trans correspondant, puis on libère l'acide hexahydrophtalique;

PROCEDURE IS OCCURED BY BHTAUK ACID EHAÏIOStpES
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to the conversion of phthalic acids to hexahydrophthalic acids by hydrogenation; it relates more precisely to a process making it possible to act on the ratio between cis and trans isomers of hexahydrophthalic acids.
It is known that, during the hydrogenation of phthalic acids or of derivatives, a mixture of cis and trans isomers is obtained. Depending on the hydrogenation conditions, the ratio between the cis and trans forms can be varied.
By using platinum oxide catalysts, it is even possible, during the production of 1,4-hexahydro phthali- acid, on the other hand, that only the compound cis; a process for the hydrogenation of terephthalic acid is not / yet known, according to which it is possible to operate so as to obtain only the trans form of 1,4-hexahydro phthalic acid. However, processes have already been described which make it possible to transform one of the two isomeric forms into a mixture of the cis configuration and of the trans configuration, for example by treatment with mineral acids, at high temperature and / or by irradiation with UV light.
Since these processes also give only mixtures which have to be separated again, and the yields are poor, obtaining one of the two isomeric forms is quite complicated and is accompanied by considerable portability.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Now, it has been found that, during the catalytic hydrogenation, at elevated temperature, of salts of phthalic acids to salts of corresponding hexahydrophthalic acids, it is possible to act on the ratio between the cis form and the trans form, in carrying out the hydrogenation of the salts of phthalic acids or of their partial hydrogenation products, in the presence of a salt of hexahydrophthalic acid which it is not desired to obtain. The mixture thus obtained can, without forming a salt, be separated into isomers or, after addition of acid, all of them form free hexahydrophthalic acids.
The expression "phthalic acid" includes all three isomers, hence o-, m- and p-phthalic acids. The partial hydrogenation products are the corresponding cyclchexadiene- and cyclohexenedicarboxylic acids. For the sake of simplicity, only phthalic acids have been indicated hereinafter, although these may also be the products of partial hydrogenation.
The hydrogenation conditions are known per se. Phthalic acid is hydrogenated, for example in the form of salts of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd main groups, of copper or of a metal of the 2nd secondary group, preferably of alkali and alkaline salts earthy, dissolved in a solvent or, in the finely dispersed solid state, suspended in a diluent. in the presence of known catalysts, with hydrogen or% hydrogenated gas, for example by injecting the latter under pressure into a shaken or stirred mixture of catalyst and phthalic acid sol.
The solution can however also be prepared from free acids and metal hydroxides, oxides or carbonates, in particular alkali metal or alkaline earth hydroxides, oxides or carbonates. Suitable starting materials, for example, sodium salts, potassium, lithium, magnesium, calcium, tium, aluminum, zino or cadmium o-phthalic acids,

The process is suitable for the hydrogenation of salts of aromatic dioarboxylic acids, obtained during the thermal transposition of potassium salts of aromatic dicarboxylic acids, in the presence of cadmium or zinc catalysts. In most cases, the process is carried out in aqueous solution. However, it is also possible to operate in alcoholic solution, in particular in

The talystur is generally finely dispersed in the solution or in the suspension of phthalic acid. However, it is also possible to place it in a fixed bed and run a solution of phthalic acid salts over it. The catalysts are added to the amounts customary for this hydrogenation. Raney catalysts are for example used in an amount of 5 to 25% based on the weight of phthalic acid.
The reaction temperature and pressure depend to a large extent on the catalyst used, as well as the solvent. The hydrogenation is usually carried out between 120 and 300 C, in particular between 150 and 250 C. It is advisable to bring the hydrogen under increased pressure, for example under 50 to 340 atm. effect .; however, it is also possible to operate without pressure.
The unwanted isomer is advantageously added in a ratio corresponding approximately to that of the mixture of isomers which would be expected in the usual hydrogenation. If, during the usual hydrogenation under the reaction conditions, one obtains for example a% of cis form and (100-a)% of trans form of hexahydrophthalic acid, the x-value of the proportion of form cis to advantageously be added - when we want to obtain the form trans - would be,

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
After the hydrogenation, the salts can be separated to obtain the isomers, for example all of the 'IIs. caloic, because for example, the calcium salt of cis-isophthalic acid is much more difficult to dissolve in water than the corresponding trans compound, then the hexahydrophthalic acid is released;
or the hexahydrophthalic acids can first be isolated, then the isomers can be separated. The conversion of the salts into free hexahydrophthalic acid is carried out in a known manner, for example by adding acids, in particular mineral acids, such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or sulfur dioxide. An advantageous embodiment consists in using, for the precipitation of hexahydrophthalic acid, the phthalic acid to be hydrogenated or an acid salt of the latter.
When an acid salt is used for precipitation, in the first stage, only an acid salt of hexahydrophthalic acid is obtained, which is converted, in a second stage, with phthalic acid. , in free hexahydrophthalic acid; at the same time a solution of the acid salt of phthalic acid is formed, which can be used immediately for the first step of precipitation.
EXAMPLE
A mixture of 102.1 g of dipotassium terephthalate (corresponding to 70 g of terephthalic acid), 43.6 g of dipotassium cis-hexahydroterephthalate, of 200 cm3 d is introduced into a shaking autoclave. a mixture of added dipotassium cis-hexahydroterephthalate and of dipotassium trans-hexahydroterephthalate formed, is brought to a pH of 3.2 by addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid, trans-hexahydroterephthalic acid being obtained quantitatively in the form of a white precipitate. The reaction mixture is then diluted with water, thereby bringing it to
2000 cm3, in order to keep the cis-hexahydroterephthalic acid completely dissolved.
It is filtered off from the non-water soluble residue and the suction cake is washed with 40 ° C water. After drying the cake, it is obtained.
69.4 g of trans-hexahydroterephthalic acid with a melting point of 300 - 302 C and an acid number of 650 (theory @ 651). The trans-hexahydrophthalic acid obtained does not undergo any weight loss upon treatment with chloroform, that is to say, it does not contain cis-hexahydrophthalic acid.
From the aqueous filtrate, after extraction with chloroform or ether and after having removed the solvent by evaporation, a cis-hexahydro-terephthalic acid with a melting point of 161 ° 0 and an index d is obtained from the aqueous filtrate. acid of 651.
When it is desired to use the cis-hexahydro-terephthalic acid for a new preparation, the filtrate is neutralized with potassium hydroxide and the necessary quantity of dipotassium terephthalate is added.
The supplied terephthalic acid is converted, in practically quantitative yield, into trans-hexahydroterephthalic acid, while the added cis proportion remains unchanged.
