<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

A method of padding and printing cellulose fibers.
The present invention relates to a method of padding and printing cellulosic fibers with reactive dyes which are fixed by heat treatment, which consists in impregnating the material with a dye solution or in printing it with a printing paste. , which contain, in addition to the usual adjuvants, a mono- or polyhydric alcohol whose boiling point is higher than that of water or a mixture of these alcohols, and then, optionally after prior drying, to fix the dye on the fiber by heat treatment.
The mono- or polyhydric alcohols which are particularly suitable for the new process are propylene glycol and hexylene glycol as well as their mixtures in proportions of

About 20 to 100 parts per 1000 parts of padding solution or printing paste. By "customary adjuvants" is meant, for example, urea, sodium or potassium carbonate, sodium 3-nitrobenzene-1 sulfonate, sodium sulfate, as well as thickeners, such as alginate. sodium, crystalline dextrin, carob flour, etc.
The dyes can be fixed in different ways, for example by vaporization at around 100 to 102 C without pressure or around 105 - 130 C with overpressure, after prior drying, by conditioning in closed ovens at constant temperature, for example between 70 and 95 C and preferably between 80 and 90 C and with constant humidity, or by thermo-fixation, that is to say by dry heating at a temperature of 120 - 200 C for 10 to 1 minutes .
After heat treatment, the dyed or printed material is rinsed with water, soaped, rinsed again and dried.
The soaping is advantageously carried out in a soap solution which, in certain cases, may also contain an alkali carbonate, a tertiary phosphate, a polymer phosphate or an alkali salt of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or of nitrolotriacetic acid, or also in a solution of a synthetic detergent such as an alkylaryl sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, a laurylpolyglycol ether sulphate, lauryl-, cetyl-, stearyl- or oleylpolyglycolic ethers as well as mono- and dialkylphenylpolyglycol ethers.
The method is particularly suitable for reactive dyes which are fixed to the fiber by heat treatment, i.e. which contain a reactive group with at least one easily separable substituent as anion and / or with a multiple bond. CC subject to addition.
These reactive groups are preferably the residue of an acid containing at least one mobile halogen atom and / or a CC multiple bond capable of addition such as, for example, chloroacetic acid, bromacetic acid, ss- acids

The reactive group can also be a diaryloxycyanurate residue, an arylurethane residue, an alkyl-sulfate residue, an epoxy residue, a p-chlor or 2-bromethyl residue.
The dyes can belong to the -azoic, anthraquinone or phthalocyanic classes. Azo dyes can also contain substituents suitable for the formation of metal complexes or complexed metal atoms, in particular copper, nickel, chromium or cobalt.
The dyes and prints obtained are uniform and well penetrated and exhibit good resistance to light, washing, water, sweat, rubbing and dry cleaning.
With respect to the known padding and printing processes, the new process with the use of an addition of mono- or polyhydric alcohol or of a mixture of these alcohols, has the advantage that the solutions of padding or printing pastes give much more.
In the following examples, parts are parts by weight,% are% by weight, and temperatures are given in C.
EXAMPLE 1.-
With a padding solution having for composition:
15 g / liter of mono- (3'-trichloropyrimidylamino) -phenyl- amide of Cu-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid (as trisodium salt)
150 g / liter of urea
10 g / liter of sodium 3-nitrobenzene-1-sulfonate,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
6 g / liter of calcined sodium sulphate
50 g / liter of calcined soda ash and
50 g / liter of propylene glycol, a fiberglass fabric is padded, the solution is squeezed to a weight gain of 85%, the fabric thus impregnated is dried and sprayed for 10 minutes at 100-102. The fixed fabric is then washed with water, leached at the boil in a solution of 5 g / liter of soap and 2 g / liter of sodium carbonate, rinsed again and dried.
A uniform and intense turquoise blue shade is obtained, exhibiting good resistance to light, water, washing, drumming, sweat, friction, alkaline scouring and dry cleaning. The shade obtained is as intense as with 30 g / liter of Cu-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid mono- (3'-trichloropyrimidylamino) -phenylamide (in the form of the trisodium salt but without propylene glycol.
Instead of spraying the dyed fabric, it can also be heat treated for 5 minutes at 150.
EXAMPLE 2. -
A padding solution is prepared having the following composition:
15 g / liter of mono- (3'-dichloropyrimidylamino) -phenylamide of Cu-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid (in the form of the trisodium salt),
50 g / liter of urea,
10 g / liter of sodium 3-nitrobenzene-l-sulfonate,
6 g / liter of calcined sodium sulphate,
50 g / liter of calcined sodium carbonate, and
50 g / liter of propylene glycol.
A mercerized cotton fabric is padded with this solution so as to have a weight gain of 85%. After drying, the dyed fabric is sprayed for 10 minutes at 100 - 102. The attached tissue is then treated as described in Example 1.
An intense turquoise blue shade is obtained which has the same intensity and the same properties as the shade obtained following
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the data of example 1.
For the production of etch patterns, the attached tissue is treated, without further post-treatment, with a biting paste based on sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate and Leukotrop W.
EXAMPLE 3. -
A padding solution is prepared having the following composition:

10 g / liter of sodium 3-nitrobenzene-1-sulfonate,
6 g / liter of calcined sodium sulphate,
50 g / liter of calcined sodium carbonate, and

A brown shade resistant to light and humidity is obtained which can be etched in white.
The hexylene glycol can be replaced without difficulty by propylene glycol or by any mixture of hexylene glycol and propylene glycol or increase or decrease more or less the amount, for example between 40 and 60 g / liter.
For soaping the dye, it is possible to use instead of the soapy solution of Example 1, a solution containing from 0.5 to 2.0 g / liter, and preferably 1 g / liter of a synthetic detergent such as as dodecylbenzene sulfonate, a lauryl-, cetyl-,
