The present invention relates to spark plugs for internal combustion engines.
Particularly high compression spark plugs for internal combustion engines are sometimes damaged as a result of a break in insulation or a break in the electrode, possibly due to the high temperatures at which they are exposed. subjected as well as to the phenomenon of shock waves existing in the combustion chamber. Spark plugs are especially exposed to this damage when they protrude sharply into the combustion chamber.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a spark plug which is less susceptible to damage when subjected to severe conditions in the combustion chambers. Although the main object of the invention is to provide spark plugs for use in high compression engines, they are also suitable for engines of a more conventional type.
According to the present invention, the spark plug comprises a central cylindrical electrode surrounded by a sleeve, forming the other electrode, in the shape of a truncated cone, partially flattened to form an approximately oval space around the end of the central electrode. .
The electrode sleeve is sturdy with no tips or other protrusions that can break; it surrounds the central electrode and insulates it with a circular protection.
Preferably, the center electrode is provided with flats facing the flats of the electrode sleeve so as to provide relatively wide bases for emitting the sparks. The section of the central electrode is reinforced in the body of the spark plug to increase its resistance. In addition, the section of the internal part of the central electrode is greater than that of the hole formed at the partially flattened end of the electrode sleeve so that, if the central electrode were to break, it does not pass. through the spark plug hole or fall into the combustion chamber.
The free space around the central electrode of the spark plug can be brought into communication with the cylinder by perforations made in the walls of the electrode sleeve, but this is not essential.
The invention can be implemented in different forms; one embodiment of a spark plug according to the invention, for use in an exceptionally high compression two-stroke engine will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1 is a partial section of the lower part of the spark plug.
Figure 2 is a section, taken on line II-II of Figure 1, of part of the spark plug.
Figure 3 shows the end of the spark plug in plan view.
The upper part of the spark plug is of conventional shape and is not shown in the figures.
The spark plug comprises a hollow body 10 containing an insulator 11, a sealing ring 12 between the body and the insulator and a cylindrical center electrode 13. The body has a shoulder 14 against which it bears. a seal 15 which presses against the seat made for the spark plug in the cylinder head of the engine. Under the gasket 15, a threaded part 16 is screwed into the spark plug hole of the cylinder head.

body part of the spark plug protrude into the engine combustion chamber. The end 18 of the sleeve is in the shape of a truncated cone. and surrounds the end of the central electrode 13. The end of the truncated cone 18 is partially flattened so that the hole 19 formed at its end assumes an approximately oval shape and leaves a space around the end of the electrode. The central electrode 13 as shown in FIG. 3. The central electrode 13 has flats 21 opposite the flats of the electrode sleeve 18, forming relatively wide bases for the emission of sparks.
The cross section of the upper part of the central electrode 13 is greater than the smallest distance existing between the flats of the electrode sleeve 18 so that, if the central electrode were to break at the height of the insulator 11, the The electrode cannot come out of the spark plug and fall. In addition, the increase in section of the internal part appreciably strengthens the central electrode.
If the interior space 22 of the spark plug is properly formed, the sparks emitted by the spark plug will be directed towards the interior of the combustion chamber.
For some uses, it may be preferable to put the internal space 22 in communication with the engine cylinder, not only through the inter-electrode space, but also through additional openings. If necessary, holes 23 can be drilled in the electrode sleeve 18 at suitable points.
In order to decrease the spacing 20 of the electrodes when adjusting this spacing, pressure is put inward on the flats of the electrode sleeve 18 to bring them closer to the flats of the central electrode 13. This adjustment can be made. This can be easily done by placing the end of the truncated cone 18 of the spark plug in a mechanics' V and forcing the spark plug deeper into the V, for example in a vise. The spark plug described above gives a spark having good characteristics and effective at lower voltage than some spark plugs using spiked electrodes.
CLAIMS 1. - Spark plug comprising a central cylindrical electrode surrounded by an external electrode characterized in that the external electrode is a sleeve in the form of a truncated cone partially flattened to leave an oval space around it. the end of the center electrode.
