L'organe en crémaillère peut coopérer avec le presse-étoupe et l'organe porteur peut coopérer avec la tulipe ou vice-versa. Les dessins an- nexés montrent un exemple de chaque agencement. Sur ces dessins : - la figure 1 est une élévation latérale, en partie en coupe d'un raccord de tuyaux; - la figure 2 est une élévation latérale du raccord avec une for- me d'appareil à réaliser l'étanchéité, monté sur lui; - la figure 3 est une coupe suivant la ligne III-III à la figu- re 2; - la figure 4 est une élévation latérale du raccord avec l'au- tre forme d'appareil à réaliser l'étanchéité adaptée à lui, et - la figure 5 est une coupe suivant la ligne V-V de la figure 4;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to the tightening or the making of the sealing of the fittings with a straight end (also known as a bead end) and 'tulip end between pipes and other elements in which a tight closure is made by an elastic gasket which is compressed between the outer surface of the stretch and a tapered portion of the inner surface of the tulip, by a gland having a continuous outer thread which cooperates with an inner thread of the tulip. This type of fitting is mainly used in cast iron pipes and drawn pipes.
The rotation of the stuffing box causes it to abut against the packing, and by the axial movement resulting from a subsequent screwing action, exerts a sufficient compressive force on the packing to achieve a tight seal or seal. .
Heretofore, the necessary rotation of the stuffing box has been achieved by fitting on the unthreaded, crenellated head of the stuffing box a removable C-shaped wrench having a sturdy constructed rod and striking this rod by means of a hammer of determined weight.
According to the present invention, the gland is rotated relative to the tulip by cooperation of a removable rack member and one or more pinions mounted on a removable carrier member, one of the members cooperating with the press -etoupe and the other cooperating with the tulip and a relative rotation of the tulip and of the latter body being prevented by the penetration of one or more failures of the body into the notches of the inner face of the tulip.
The rack member can cooperate with the stuffing box and the carrier member can cooperate with the tulip or vice versa. The accompanying drawings show an example of each arrangement. In these drawings: - Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section of a pipe connector; FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the connector with one form of sealing apparatus mounted thereon; FIG. 3 is a section on the line III-III in FIG. 2; FIG. 4 is a side elevation of the connection with the other form of apparatus to achieve the sealing adapted to it, and FIG. 5 is a section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 4;
The construction of the fitting is shown in Figure 1. The end of the cord 2 has a cylindrical outer surface *.
The tulip end 4 has an inner surface which is partly conical, in 6, and partly threaded, in 8. Two diametrically affixed notches 10 are formed in the threaded part of the tulip (see also Figures 3 and 5 ). With these notches the hose differs from the hoses in use until now. The outer surface 12 of the tulip is free from any additional outer protuberance. As a result, there is no change to the basic standardized dimensions of pipes or other elements with similar ends.
An elastic gasket 14 of triangular section forms the seal. The packing is compressed by a gland 18 having a continuous external thread 20 and a crenellated head 22.
In the apparatus shown in Figures 2 and 3, the rack member 24 cooperates with the stuffing box 18 and is arcuate with an interior surface which fits the exterior of the head 22. The rack member is - held in place axially by a flange 26 and by tabs 28 which are welded thereto.
The carrier member 30 cooperates with the tulip and has an interior surface which matches the exterior surface 12 of the tulip, a flange 32
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
quis'applique end against the end face 34 of the tulip, and an inner cleat 36 on the flange, which enters one of the notches 10 of the tulip.
The carrier member is immobilized by thumbscrews 38 which project radially inward and which are clamped against the exterior surface of the tulip. The threaded holes for the thumbscrews are as close as possible to the flange 32 on the carrier.
The carrier member has a boss 40 which is journalled a pin shaft 42 carrying a pinion 44 which meshes with the rack member. Both ends 46 and 48 of the stud shaft protrude and are terminated with square ends for receiving ratchet wrenches (not shown).
In use, a fitting is assembled with the cable gland tightened by hand, the rack member and the carrier member are adapted to the gland and the tulip, the pinion is introduced into the carrier member, the wrenches are matched to the stud shaft and then the pawls are operated until the stuffing box is rotated by a sufficient amount. A great mechanical advantage is obtained. The rotation of the pinion by two ratchet wrenches ensures uniform movement and prevents any displacement of the rack or pinion carrier when the load on one of the ratchets is released to actuate its ratchet.
When the connection has been completely tightened by the means described, the rack member, the carrier member, the pinion and the tightening keys are removed? and are available for use on the following fitting.
In the apparatus shown in Figures 4 and 5, the carrier member 50 resembles a C-key with a shortened handle 52. The betting member is held in axial position by tabs 54. A hole in the carrier member receives a pin shaft 56 which carries a pinion 58 at one end and is square headed to receive a ratchet key at the other end 60.
The rack member 62 has a flange 64 and an inner lug 66 on the flange, which enters one of the notches of the tulip.
