EMI2.1
RX= composé organo-métallique.

The starting product I, that is to say 2,7-dimethyl-octa-2,6-dien-4-yne-1,8-diol, is obtained by anionotropic transposition of 2,7-dim- thyl-octa-1,7-diene-4-yne-3,5-diol (condensation product of oC-methyl-acrolein and acetylene magnesium dibromide) in aqueous acetone by means of sulfuric acid , the yield being about 60%. This product crystallizes from benzene and has a melting point 108.5 - 109.5 C. Maximum absorption in the UV. at 272.5 mp. (@ = 23500) and 288 m (W 18830).
The oxidation of 2,7-dimethyl-octa-2,6-diene-4-yne-1,8-diol I takes place by the action of high-valent metal oxides. The oxidation is carried out in an organic solvent, such as acetone, ether, tetrahydrofuran and methylene chloride, at a reaction temperature between 0 ° C. and the boiling point of the solvent. It is particularly recommended to carry out the oxidation by means of manganese dioxide, in dry ketone, at room temperature. When excess manganese dioxide and a lot of acetone are used, the yield of C10 dialdehyde is almost quantitative.
The C10 dialdehyde formed crystallizes in a mixture of petroleum ether and ether in the form of yellow needles with a melting point of 68 C maximum absorption in the U.V. at 314 and 330 mu, the aldehyde obtained is condensed with 2 equivalents of an organometallic compound RX, R denoting an organic radical and X the expressions MeIIHal or Me (MeII or Me represent bi- or monovalent metals ), in particular MgHal, ZnHal or Na and Li. The condensation products III obtained are hydrolyzed by the action of water, weak acids or solutions of ammonium salts. The products formed are polyene compounds comprising two secondary hydroxy groups.
A particularly indicated mode of procedure of the process according to the invention consists in the condensation of the aldehyde C10 with two equivalents of a Grignard compound of the general formula R-MgBr, R denoting for example one of the radicals

The preparation of the lithium compounds takes place in the usual manner for these kinds of compounds. For example, methyl lithium is formed by the action of methyl iodide on lithium in diethyl ether. The lithium acetylide compounds are preferably prepared in liquid ammonia by reacting the acetylenic compounds with lithium or lithium amide. For this purpose, each active hydrogen atom of the acetylenic compound requires a lithium atom.
The condensation of the lithium acetylide compounds formed with the C10 dialdehyde is preferably carried out in liquid ammonia. Lithium condensation is the preferred mode of procedure for the condensation of C10 dialdehyde with acetylene and with 4-methyl-hex-3-ene-5-yne-1,1- acid ethyl ester. dicarboxylic. The latter is prepared from 1-bromo-3-methyl-pent-2-en-4-yne by reaction with the diethyl ester of sodio-malonic acid.
The condensation of the C10 dialdehyde can also be carried out in an analogous manner with the sodium compounds and its acetylenic compounds. For this purpose, the operation is preferably carried out in liquid ammonia. However, condensations using sodium produce a larger amount of by-products and therefore have no advantage over condensations using lithium.
According to another mode of procedure of the invention, the C10 dialdehyde is condensed with zinc compounds. These condensations by means of zinc are in principle identical to the Grignard condensations and to the condensations by means of lithium. The zinc condensation is preferably used for the reaction of the C10 dialdehyde with an O {-bromp-acetic ester and the vinylogs thereof, preferably the Y -bromotiglic ester. This ester is formed from the corresponding tiglic ester by heating with 1.1 equivalents of N-bromo-succinimide in carbon tetrachloride, the whole being exposed to light.
By subjecting the condensation product of C10 dialdehyde with 2 equivalents of the γ -bromo-tiglic ester to a water separation operation, it is transformed into the 8,8'-dehydro-crocetine-dieester and, by hydro- partial generation of the triple bond of the latter and by isomerization of the hydrogenation product, the diester of all-trans-crocetin is obtained.
The products of the process according to the invention are valuable intermediates for the synthesis of natural dyes, in particular for the synthesis of -carotene, bixin and crocetin.

In 20. parts by volume of tetrahydrofuran. To start the reaction, add a little of the γ-bromo-tiglic ester solution to the zinc and heat until the solution turns cloudy and starts to boil. Thereupon, the C10 dialdehyde solution and the Y-bromo-tiglic ester solution are added so that the reaction mixture continues to boil vigorously.

can be converted, by separation of water, into the 8,8'-de-shydro-crocetin dimethyl ester and, by partial hydrogenation and isomerization consecutive, into the trans-crocetin dimethyl ester, according to the following procedure. Before: The residue from the distillation is dissolved in 130 parts by volume of benzene and, to separate the water, the water is heated to a boiling point with a descending condenser for 10 minutes with 2 parts by weight of p-toluene acid. solid sulfonic. Thereupon, p-toluenesulfonic acid is separated from the reaction solution by means of sodium bicarbonate solution, and then concentrated.
It is filtered through an aluminum oxide column, rinsed with benzene, then the residue from the concentration of the first filtrate is redistilled in high vacuum, in order to remove the low-boiling impurities.
On cooling, the residue from the distillation crystallizes. Recrystallized from a mixture of benzene and methanol, it provides the 8,8'-dehydro-crocetine dimethyl ester of melting point 167-167.5 C; maximum U.V. absorption in petroleum ether (boiling point 40-50 C) at 401.5 m, (# = 82,200) and 427 m # = 82000).
