<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Les Figs. 1 et 2 représentent, respectivement en coupe ver- ticale et en plan, une tête de fourche comprenant un boulon qui traverse les raccords et la douille de direction;

HEAD OF FORK FOR TELESCOPIC MOTORCYCLE FORKS.
To ensure the plastic suspension of the front of motorcycles, more and more use is made of telescopic forks. The fork head serving for the articulation of the fork to the frame of the motorcycle is generally constituted by two fork connectors joined to the upper fork tubes and by a section of tube fixed between these connectors, serving as a pivot. steering and passing through a steering tube provided on the frame.
The attachments to the fork crown and to the section of the tube serving as a steering pivot and called the steering tube must be fixed in such a way that, on the one hand, the resistance of these elements to warping is sufficiently assured and that, on the other hand, the assembly of the fork crown to the frame can be carried out with the simplest means and in as little time as possible.
It is known to rigidly assemble the lower fork connector to the fork tubes and to the steering tube by welding and to ¯fix the upper connector removably to the upper ends of the fork tubes and to the steering tube by means of screws. This method of construction has the disadvantage that the undeformability of the fork crown is insufficient in certain cases, given that the fixing of the upper fork connector using screws does not ensure sufficient rigidity of the assembly. It has already been proposed to weld the fork tubes to the two connectors, so as to constitute a rigid rectangle and also to join the steering tube rigidly to the lower fork connector.
In this case, and in order to allow assembly with the frame, the upper fitting must be divided, the part integral with the steering tube having to be removable.
Starting from the 'arrangement according to which the fork connectors, between which is placed the steering tube of the frame
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
are rigidly joined to the fork tube, for example by welding, the invention allows the use of undivided fork connectors, thanks to the fact that the element or elements which cooperate, as a steering pivot., with the The steering tube of the motorcycle frame, are mounted in the fork fittings so that they can be offset axially in height or removed. This has the effect of considerably simplifying the assembly of the fork crown with the frame and of improving the shape of the fork crown.
The practical realization of this principle of the invention can be done in various ways. A simple and cost-effective solution is to use a bolt which passes through the fork fittings and the steerer tube of the frame like a spring grease bolt and which bears against the outer surfaces of the fork fittings. by means of its head and its nut.
In order that the fork crown can be adapted, while retaining its dimensions, to headings of different lengths - this notwithstanding the rigid assembly of the undivided fork connectors with the fork tubes - the invention provides for the compensation, by means of one or more adjustment rings, of the difference between the reciprocal spacing of the fork connectors on the one hand and the length of the steering tube of the frame, possibly including the on the other hand.
Instead of constituting the steering pivot by a continuous bolt, it is possible to use for this purpose the inner rolling rings, mounted in the fork fittings, rolling bearings, at least one of these rings being able to be fixed in an adjustable manner, by screwing into the corresponding fitting. In order that, in this embodiment, the fork fittings are not separated by the action of the forces to be transmitted, it is recommended to have a spacer piece between the fork fittings, preferably in the form of a hollow cylinder segment, and to rigidly join this part to the fork fittings, eg. by welding.
The accompanying drawing shows examples of execution.
Figs. 1 and 2 show, respectively in vertical section and in plan, a fork crown comprising a bolt which passes through the connectors and the steering tube;
Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively in vertical section and in plan, a fork crown in which the inner rolling races of the rolling bearings mounted in the fork connectors serve as a steering pivot.
In these two exemplary embodiments, the two fork connectors 3 and 4 are welded to the fork tubes 1 and 2. The steering sleeve 5, integral with the frame of the motorcycle, engages between the two fork connectors.
According to Figs. 1 and 2, the pivoting assembly of the fork connectors 3 and 4 and the steering tube 5 is ensured by a bolt 6 passing through the fork connectors and the sleeve and which rest on the underside of the connector 4 by a head 6a and, on the upper face of the connector 3, by a nut 6b. Between the bolt and the steering sleeve are provided ball bearings 7 and 8, the outer rings 7a and 8a of which are inserted into the ends of the sleeve 5. The inner ring of the lower ball bearing 8 is inserted into the fitting of lower fork, while the inner ring of the upper ball bearing 7 is screwed onto the thread of bolt 6.
Between this inner ring and the upper fork connector 3 is disposed an adjusting ring 9, which can be replaced if necessary, in order to allow the adaptation of the head to steering sleeves 5 of different lengths.
In the example of Figs. 3 and 4, the tra-

pouring the fork fittings and the steering tube, the steering pivot here being constituted by the inner bearing rings 7b and 8b of the rolling bearings 7 and 8. The inner ring 8b of the lower bearing bracket is inserted into the fitting fork 4, while the inner ring 7b of the upper rolling bearing is established to form a screw sleeve axially moved to the upper fork connector by means of two rings 10 and 11 forming nuts.
Between the two fork connectors 3 and 4 is provided a spacer or spacer 12 in the form of a hollow cylinder segment, welded to these connectors.
