<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PEREECTTONNENLENTS AT THE BICYCLETS.
In order to transform a bicycle into a tandem, it has been proposed to fix to the bicycle frame additional tubular elements supporting the second handlebars and the second seat.
The present invention relates to a device of this type and it relates essentially to improvements made in the method of fixing the handlebar holder tube to the existing frame of the bicycle and to the hub of the rear wheel. These improvements will be described. hereinafter with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. I is an elevation view of the perfected simple bicycle.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the tandem transformed bicycle.
Fig.3 is a partial view of an alternative construction of the connection between the axes of the crankset and the rear wheel.
Fig.4 is a view of a protective member for the additional pinion of the crankset.
Fig. 5 is a perspective section through the rear hub

rer with the additional pedals.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the rear legs of the frame.
Fig.7 shows an axis intended to replace the axis of the rear crankset of the drum, when the latter is removed.
The horizontal tube Ia of the frame I of the ordinary bicycle has beyond the saddle connection 2 a threaded end Ia ', which is joined, for tandem mounting, to an equally threaded end of the additional horizontal tube 3 by means of 'a suitable sleeve 4. On this same tube 3 is brazed a sleeve 5 surmounted by an arm 6, which is extended by a pivot 7 on which the second handlebar 8 is fixed by means of a friction nut 9.
In the rear fork 10 connected to the tube 3 by the connector IOa, the second saddle II is carried by means of a coil spring 12 or possibly a rubber sleeve (Fig. 2). The fork 10 is fixed. removably to the lugs 13 brazed to the end of the rear tubes Ib and Ic of the normal frame of the bicycle. In order to be able to vary the spacing between the axis of the crankset and the axis of the rear wheel, the tube Ic consists of two sections IcI and the, whose neighboring threaded ends are connected by a sleeve 14-. The same result could possibly be obtained by mounting the tube Ic eccentrically on a disc 15 carried by the axle 16 of the crankset (FIG. 3).
The hub 17 of the rear wheel carries a double toothed wheel 18 forming a freewheel and traversed by a chain 19 equipped with a derailleur 20. This hub also constitutes a brake drum I7a subjected to the action of a band brake I7b controlled by a suitable member 21 acting under the action of a suitable transmission cable. The hub 17 rotates by means of ball bearings 22 on two sleeves 23 provided on the outside with a circumferential groove 24, in which one or the other of the rear legs 13 of the bicycle fits. These sleeves 23, worn on a nozzle 25
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
integral with the axis of the rear hub, by ball bearings 25a can move away from one another, while sliding centrally inside a suitable socket 26.
The rear axle of the rear hub is formed in the case where the bicycle is used in tandem by a pivot 27 (Fig. 5) integral with one of the additional pedals 27a and fixed by a screw 28 to the other additional pedal 27b.This is integral with an additional toothed wheel 29 on which is mounted a second chain 30 passing over a pinion 31 mounted on the axle 16 of the crankset, on the side opposite to the usual chain pinion 32.
To use the bike solo, all you have to do is separate the additional tubes 3 and IO from the normal frame, rigidly assembled to each other, by unscrewing the sleeve 4 and the fixing bolts to the dropouts 13. Then remove the screw. 28, which allows the pedals 27a and 27b to be removed. Then, to replace the pivot 26, the nozzle 24 is passed through a rod 33 (Fig. 7) integral with a curved head 34 and on the threaded end of which is screwed , after placement,
a second similar head 35.These heads have internally a conical crown 36 fitting into a corresponding recess 37 made on the one hand at the end of the nozzle 24 and on the other hand on the outer face of the cone 24a integral with this The opposite cone 38 of the ball bearing 25 is screwed onto said nozzle 24 and is held in place for example by means of washers 39.
To the legs 13 are fixed rods 40, which support the mudguard 41 of the rear wheel. To avoid on the other hand that solo, the cyclist is hampered by the additional pinion
31 of the normal crankset, the teeth of this pinion can be enclosed in a yoke 42 (Fig. 4) formed of two hinged half-cups, which are kept close together by a fixing lug 43.
