Cycle.
Cycle. The present invention relates to a cycle.
The cycle according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises suspended pedals and that its saddle tube and its steering sleeve which is parallel to this tube have. an inclination towards the rear, with respect to the vertical, at least equal to 18, and that in addition, on the one hand, this tube and socket have between them such a distance and, on the other hand, the fork racks have. a curvature such that the trail of the front wheel has a positive value of between 5 and 30 mm.
Suspended pedals may preferably include a floor which is supported by a post which is disposed entirely on the interior side of the floor, the upper end of said post being attached to the outer end of a suspension pin which, it is mounted using bearings inside a hollow crank pin fixed to the level of the bottom bracket.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown, by way of example, a form of execution of the cycle, as well as detailed views.
Fig. 1 shows, schematically and in elevation, a cycle (the mixed lines of this figure representing, in order to allow comparison, the ordinary frame of a cycle with ordinary pedals).
Fig. 2 shows a pedal in section along the line II-II of FIG. 4. FIG. 3 shows, in plan, the pedal shown in FIG. 2, fig. 4 showing the same pedal in elevation.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sections respectively along the vines V -V and VI-VI of fig. 4 and along lines VII-VII of the. fig. 3.
In the cycle represented by FIG. 1, the minimum height h that the axis I. of the crankset must have above the ground S depends on the. sum of the length of the crank 2 and the height of the suspended pedal 3 which is articulated at 4 at the outer end of the crank 2. It should be noted that the suspended pedal 3 shown in FIG. 1 is a pedal known in itself, having the shape of a stirrup, that is to say that the floor 5 of this pedal is suspended from the axis 4 by internal and external tie rods between which is housed the cyclist's foot.
It should also be noted that the. height Ta must be sufficient so that in the lowest position of the pedal, and taking into account the inclination that the cycle takes in bends, the lowest part of the lower surface of the floor 5 of the pedal cannot touch ground.
As regards the distance d between the axis of the crankset 1 and the axis 6 of the front wheel 7, it must be at least equal to the sum obtained by adding the following elements 1 length of the radius of the tire front wheel, 2 length of the distance between its periphery and the corresponding mudguard, 3 distance, in the horizontal direction, between the tip of the cyclist's foot (low heel position) and the axis of the suspended pedal, when 'it is located in the vicinity of the front wheel, and 4 length of the crank.
The seat tube 8 has an inclination a with respect to the vertical which is greater than in ordinary pedal cycles and at least equal to 18. The seat tube 8 is substantially tangent to the rear wheel mudguard 9. The length of the seat tube can. remain approximately the usual length of this tube in suspended pedal cycles, i.e., this length is reduced compared to the length of the seat tube in ordinary pedal cycles.
The new position of the tube 8 can be considered as obtained by the rotation of this tube backwards around the axis of the crankset 1, from its old position indicated by the mixed lines in FIG. 1.
The steering socket 11 has an inclination such that it is parallel to the tube 8 or even slightly more oblique, the distance between the tube 8 and the socket 11 being inclined so that the extension of the axis of this strongly inclined socket meets the ground at a point H which is only a few millimeters in front of point C, the latter being the point of contact between the front wheel and the ground. The distance C -H which constitutes the positive caster of the front wheel does not exceed a value of 30 mm and may be reduced to 5 mm.
In this way, the bush 11 has a position which is strongly retracted from the position of this bush. in a cycle with ordinary pedals, the latter position being represented by mixed lines in fig. 1. Therefore, the bottom bracket tube 12 and the top tube 13 which is parallel to the ground can be shortened. In addition, the upper tube 13 is located lower than in a cycle with ordinary pedals: the height difference can be equal to 5 cm and more.
On the other hand, despite the lowering of the top of the steering sleeve 11, it can have, in any case, a sufficient length, given that its lower end is opposite a place. much lower from the front wheel than in regular cycles.
Finally, the. fork 14 is joined to the axis 6 of the front wheel, by fork sleeves 14a having a significant curvature lowered as much as possible so that their end is. approximately horizontal in order to acquire maximum bending possibilities during bumps, including. the component is. oblique backwards. It is thus possible to increase the distance d to a length greater than 70 mm.
To ensure, despite the shortening of the distance between the seat tube 8 and the steering tube 11, a sufficient distance between the saddle 1.0 and the handlebar 15, this gui don is mounted on a stem 16 having a horizontal length greater than that of the usual stems or the handlebars must be significantly bent in order to bring the handles further forward. The horizontal spacing of the. The position of the cyclist's body with the handlebars can be supplemented by moving the saddle 10 back, for example by placing his carriage backwards instead of mounting it forward, and by having it carried by a stem.
The rear part of the frame made up of the base tubes 17 and the rear fork 1.8 must have a minimum extr'axis between the pedal and the rear wheel. This leads to a shortening, in particular of the base tubes 17.
I1 should still be noted that the saddle recoil will bring. quite naturally, the rear luggage rack, retaining its usual length, in a more rearward position: this position will leave free, for the movement of the feet behind the pedals, the greatest gap required by the suspended pedals. It will be able to allow the rear cross member of the luggage rack to be moved vertically to the rear of the mudguard and thus to produce a tripod allowing the bicycle to be stored vertically in its garage, the lower support point being able to moreover be replaced by any suitable device more rigid than the rear mudguard on its rod.
A cycle established as has just been said has many advantages. The framework of the cycle has smaller dimensions. It is, therefore, lighter and at the same time more rigid than ordinary frames. In fact, reducing the dimensions of the frame not only leads to a shortening of the length of the tubes, but the constitutive angles become the best for the strength of the frame. We will be able to. therefore, to obtain an equal resistance, choose thicknesses and even sections of tubes significantly less than the thicknesses and sections used until now and this as well when the frame is made of light alloy as when it is made of steel .
2 The lower part of the legs being horizontal, thanks to the strong curvature, it provides real front suspension due to the flexibility of the end of the fork.
3 Lowering the height of the -saddle lowers the center of gravity of the cycle-cyclist assembly and therefore increases safety.
4 The new position of the rider reduces the master torque and therefore the air resistance.
5 On an ordinary bicycle, the cyclist's maximum effort is practically limited to his weight (dancer position). In a described cycle, this position as a dancer becomes unnecessary and we will even go beyond the. the instantaneous power that it allowed, thanks to the new support obtained from the saddle in the hori zontal direction (the saddle will resist, thanks to its rear widening, the horizontal component of the pedaling reaction). This effect will be further accentuated by the possibility of pulling on the handlebars much more than hitherto, the average direction of the legs rising closer to the direction of the arms.
Figs. 2 to 7 show a pedal, the application of which makes it possible to reduce in a particularly effective way the minimum value of the height ii of the pedal board above the ground, so that this value approaches that achieved in ordinary frames.
The pedal floor shown in fig. 2 to 7 is connected to the suspension articulation by an upright which is located only on the interior side of the floor, so that the latter together with the upright forms an angled pedal. Such a pedal allows the cyclist's foot to disengage from the. pedal not only by a longitudinal movement backwards, but also by a transverse or lateral movement.
To reduce the. height of such a pedal, it is important to reduce as much as possible the projection formed by the suspension articulation of the pedal, the extent of which depends on the axial length of this articulation. This protrusion is reduced sufficiently to leave practically completely free the top of the foot which rests on the floor of the pedal.
Thus the maximum distance a (see fig. 2), between the floor of the pedal and the suspension articulation axis of the latter, has a value reaching 15 to 45% of the length b of the crank, this length having its usual value between 160 and 175 mm.
The crank pin 19 (see FIG. 2) of the crank 2 is arranged in the form of a hollow body inside which is housed a pin 20, the outer end of which protruding from the crank pin 19 is integral with the pedal. Fixing the crankpin to the. crank is provided -parvissage using 24 thread, including. the thread can be truncated and have an angle less than 45.
Between the axis 20 and the crankpin 19 are interposed two ball bearings 21 and 22, including the one located at the end of the axis which is opposite to the one which. supports the pedal, is housed inside the crank 2 and even, as can be seen from FIG. 2, in the immediate vicinity of the inner face of this crank. The other bearing 21 is located at the opposite end of the crankpin 19, which ensures the distance between the planes of the two bearings a maximum value.
The bearing 21 located in the vicinity of the outer end of the axis of the pedal, has a diameter greater than that of the bearing located in the vicinity of the inner end of said axis. In this way, the interested balls of the two bearings work diagonally, which brings about one. better absorption of the cantilever torque of the pedal.
The shape of the hollow crankpin 19 is chosen correspondingly, that is to say its threaded end which is screwed into the crank has a diameter smaller than that of its opposite end.
The rolling surfaces of the inner ball bearing 22 are formed, on the one hand, by a groove 23 formed in the inner end of the shaft 20 and, on the other hand, by a trough 25 formed in the inner end. higher of the crankpin 19. In addition, the rolling surfaces of the other ball bearing 21 are formed, on the one hand, by a cup 26 formed in the edge of a plate 27 which is secured to a nut 27a which is screwed on the thread of the outer part of the shaft 20 and, on the other hand, by a cup 28 which is formed in the outer edge of the crank pin 19. By screwing the nut 27a on the shaft 20, both ball bearings 21 and 22 are adjusted.
The centering of the nut 27a and of the plate 27 on the axis 20 can be further improved by the engagement of the smooth tubular part before the nut with an unthreaded cylindrical part of the axis 20 (see fig. 2). ).
The amount of the pedal is made integral with the axis 20, by soot part in the form of a cup 29, cooperating with the external threaded end of the axis 20, this cup 29 being inserted between the plate 27, screwed by 27a on the axis 20, and a second external nut 30..
The plate 27 has a concave shape, the top directed towards the interior and the central part 29a of the cup 29 and the interior surface of the nut 30 have corresponding surfaces. In this way, the plane in which the balls of the bearing 22 roll is very close to the outer end of the axis 20, which makes it possible to give the distance between the planes of the ball bearings 21 and 22 a value maximum, for a given length of the axis 20. In addition, the nut 30 is constituted by a threaded part in the outer surface of which are drilled holes parallel to the axis and allowing its tightening using a hook wrench.
To prevent any rotation of the amount of the pedal relative to the axis 20, this. axis has a longitudinal groove 20a in which fits a projection provided in the opening by means of which the cup 29 is threaded on the threaded end of the axis 20.
It should be noted that the nut 30 and the cup 29, not only provide. the fastening of the pedal to the axle 20, but play at the same time, for the plate 27 and the nut 27a respectively, the role of lock nut and notch washer, lock nut and washer which are normally provided to keep the ball bearing nut in the desired position.
The lateral upright which carries the floor comprises two beams transferred as far as possible forward and backward and converging at least in their upper part towards the axis of articulation of suspension of the pedal, these beams making it possible to accommodate the protruding inner curvature of the rider's sole. The interval between these beams can remain open, or can be closed by a curved veil, joining the beams together and turning its convexity inwardly, that is to say towards the crank which carries the pedal. These beams, or possibly the veil existing between them as well as the floor, preferably consist of a single piece obtained by stamping or by softening.
According to fig. 2 to 7, each of the two beams 31 has at least over a large part of its length an S-section giving the beam great rigidity. The beams 31 are attached at their upper ends to the bowl 29, the side walls of which, extended by the ends of the outer webs 31a of the beams, constitute a sort of cone with a curved generator. The whole of the bowl (side walls and central part 29a) therefore has two curved surfaces of great rigidity.
Below the outer surface of the cup (head of the pedal), a cross member 32 joins the two beams 31 together and forms the upper edge of the opening 33 between these beams.
The floor 5 is made in one piece. with strip lateral arm constituted by the skies beams 37. and with the head and it has an inclined direction from inside to outside and from bottom to top.
The floor has stiffening edges, the front and rear edges 5ca constituting the extension of the outer webs 31a of the beams 31, the height of the edges 5a decreasing from the inside to the outside of the pedal (see fig. 2 and 7 ).
The surface of the floor 5 has grooves 5b which constitute the extension of the grooves formed between the inner webs of the beams 31 in S section. These grooves 5b advantageously converge towards the outside and their depth decreases towards the outside.
To lighten the floor and to give it an appearance close to that of an ordinary pedal, openings 5c separated by bars 5d are formed in it between the front and rear edges 5a and the grooves 5b, as well as in the part of the floor which is located between these two grooves. These openings are stiffened by folded edges 5 f.
The longitudinal sections of the floor 5, parallel to the longitudinal plane of the cycle, have a curved shape turning its concavity upwards when the pedal is in its normal position (see fig. 4 and 7). Small ribs 5e are provided along the front and rear edges of the floor (see fig. 4 and 7), ribs on which the sole of the cyclist bears almost exclusively during ordinary, rapid pedaling. or without power. When the cyclist has to exert an intense effort, the sole of the foot curves and the sole then covers practically the entire surface of the floor.
