<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

MACHINE FOR MAKING MATS AND MATS THUS PRODUCED.
The present invention relates to a machine for making rush mats:?;! reeds., straw or similar strands, of the kind comprising a succession of small bundles, bundles or bundles arranged parallel and linked by pairs of parallel threads arranged transversely to the strands and which cross by at least one winding turn between two successive bundles., The machine performs this binding mechanically for a plurality of pairs of son.
The machine is essentially characterized by the fact that when a thin bundle of strands is introduced at the bottom of the angle formed by two binding threads unwound from two spools spaced apart from each other, two mechanisms cooperate ;, 1, ' -He- to bring the first wire practically in coaxial position with the second wire, while trapping the boot, the other to turn this second wire of at least one turn around the first wire, the first mechanism then bringing the first wire in its angular position relative to the second.
The machine comprises means for relatively compressing each chard in the angle closed by the threads, means for introducing the bundles in this angle and means for advancing the bundles already tied and constituting the mechanically produced mat.
The invention further consists of mats produced by such a machine.

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Figures 8 and 9 are partial plan and sectional views of a mat produced by the machine.
In the frame 2 in the form of a cage open on all sides, there is upper mounted a shaft 52 carrying a number of conical ignons 1 evenly spaced, number corresponding to the number of pairs of binding yarns used, for example six for the manufacture of mats two meters wide. The pinions 1 control as many bevel pinions 3 which are each secured to a coaxial cylindrical body 47 capable of rotating in bearings 46 suspended from the cross member 45 of the frame.
Internally, each body 47 is extended by an extension 49 ending in a spout forming a wire guide 50 for the wire b unwound from a spool 13 carried by brackets 51 integral with the extension 49, said wire guide brings the wire b practically in the axis of pinion 3 and body 47, Pinion 3 and body 47 have a radial slot 48 slightly projecting the axis and bearing 46 has a slot 48 'opposite to cross member 45 and parallel to the axis. The slots 48 and 48 'can be covered and provide passage for a wire a (pin 1) unwound from a spool 7 away from the spool 13, this wire a can thus be brought practically in coaxial position with the wire b.
Two lever arms 4 pivot through their lower ends, inside the frame, in bearings 5 and these arms 4 are joined by pins 7 'and 53; the axis 7 'carries the coils 7 unwinding the wire a and the axis 53 the wire guides 6 for this wire. There are as many spools 7 and thread guide 6 as there are pinions 3 The arms 4 are capable of receiving a back and forth movement, which can bring the thread guides 6 between the shaft 52 and the upper face of the pinions 3 and place the wire a coaxially with this pinion. If the slots 48 'are currently superimposed the wire!,!: Penetrates inside the pinion 3. And the body 47 and is placed in the axis of these and practically in alignment with the exit of the guide -wire 50.
Two drums 8 and 8A are rotatably mounted between the side uprights of the frame 2; the drum 8 is fixed and that 8A presses upwards against the drum 8, being. suspended in the levers 34 pivoting at 42, the free end of the levers carrying a counterweight 36. Starting from upper cross members 35, rigid guide blades 9 and 10 are placed at adjustable distances in the longitudinal direction of the machine and directed towards the drum 8 by approaching the sheet 11 fixed to the frame; the blades 9, 10 form an angle between them and serve to direct a bundle of rods introduced into the machine in the angle formed by the wires a and b; this boot is thus clamped between the ends of the blades, the wires, the drum 8 and the fixed sheet 11.
Tilting fingers 12 integral with an axis 41 can relatively compress this boot in this position, these fingers 12 being actuated by a lever arm 12 'with a counterweight 37 which is located in the path of the eccentric 28 of the pulley. 43, which is controlled by the pulley 44 of the shaft 14 mounted below the front of the frame
Starting the manufacture of a mat, the coils 13 and 7 being lined with yarn a and b, the procedure is as follows:
a quantity of thread is unwound from the spools and a knot is made in each pair of threads joined at a certain distance from the free end ,, these free ends are introduced between the drum 8 and the sheet 11, then between the drum 8 and the drum 8A and care is taken that the nodes are an extension of a horizontal diameter of the drum 8; it is understood that the yarns a and b - will have been initially passed through the yarn guides 6 and 50 respectively.
This arrangement being taken, a bundle of rods is introduced between the blades 9 and 10 and by gravity it falls into the angle formed by the threads a and b; the levers 4 are currently in their rear position away from the pinions 3 and the slots 48 and 48 'of the elements 3, 47 and 46 face the thread strand coming from the thread guide 6.
With the machine running, the shaft 14 rotates, being driven by the pulley 16, which is controlled by a motor, not shown. The pulley 16 carries an eccentric 17 which actuates a connecting rod 18, which actuates. another connecting rod 19 pivoted at the end 54 of the connecting rod 18 and at a point 40 of the frame; the connecting rod 19 carries a ratchet 22 which engages the wheel
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
toothed 20, the latter is engaged with a toothed wheel 21 integral with the shaft 52 which carries the bevel gears 1.
The number of teeth of the wheel 20 being twice that of the wheel 21 and the pinions 1 having a number of teeth double that of the pinions 3, a complete revolution of the pulley 16 will drive the wheel 20 by a quarter of turn by means of the ratchet 22, which turns the pinions 3 by a full turn; it follows that for each revolution of the pulley 16, the slots 48 and 48 'of the members 3, 47 and 46 are found in the same position opposite the wires a unwound by the coils 7 carried by the levers 4 and passing on the son guides 6, a position which allows the son to come and occupy the axis of the aforesaid organs. The circle described by the eccentric 17 of the pulley 16 should be such that the ratchet 22 skips a number of teeth of the wheel 20 which corresponds to a quarter of the total teeth.
A half-turn of the pulley 16 is therefore used to turn the pinions 3 by one turn and the remaining half-turn of the pulley 16 will be used to make the cams 15 of the shaft 14 act on the elements which print. the back and forth movement required for the lever arms 4 these members are two arms 24 pivoted at 38 to the frame, a roller 23 at the free ends of the arms 24 and on which the cams 15 act, tie rods 25 which actuate the pivoted rockers 26 in brackets 39, strollers 27 pivoted to arms 4.
The movements in the machine are as follows; the pinions 3 having arrived in the position where the slots 48, 48 'overlap and face the wire strand a to receive them, the ratchet 22 has finished its upward movement; the cams 15 requiring less than half a turn to tilt the arms 4 towards the pinions 3 to introduce the threads a into the slots 48, 48 'we have the stopping time necessary to introduce the thin bundle of rushes between the blades 9 and 10, these rods falling immediately between the drum 8 and the sheet 11 and then resting in the angle determined by the knot of the son a and b.
At this time the levers 4 begin to straighten up to bring the wires a in the axis of the organs. 3? 46 and 47 and the ratchet begins its upward movement so as to drive the toothed wheels 20, 21 and consequently the pinions 1 and 3, with the result that the thread guide 50 and the coil 13 will describe a complete revolution and that the thread b wraps around the thread a coming from the spool 7 over the thread guide 6. When the pinions 3 have completed one revolution, the cams 15 are released to allow the levers to resume. their initial position by simple effect of gravity, so as to release the son has slots 48 and 48 '.
As soon as the levers 4 and the thread guides 6 are found to have released the blades 9 and 10, a new packet of rods is introduced for the next binding operation. This bundle descending along the blades 9 and 10 comes to rest between the drum 8 and the sheet 11 in the angle formed by the wires a and b and it is compressed by the fingers 12 lowered by the eccentric 28.
This compression operation is done immediately after the introduction of the rods and before the movement of the levers 4 towards the pinions 3, the compression is sufficient to allow the knot which the thread guide 50 will form to be sufficiently tight. Two eccentrics 28 may be provided attacking two lever arms 12 '.
After a row of nodes has been formed by the thread guides 50, the drum 8 is slightly driven in order to advance the mat formed between the drums 8 and 8A. This driving movement of the drum 8 is controlled by the camshaft 14 which carries outside the frame a disc 29 carrying an adjustable eccentric 55 and which drives a connecting rod 30 actuating a lever arm 31 provided with a ratchet 32 in taken with a toothed wheel 33 fixed to the end of the shaft of the drum 8. At a remote location in front of the frame and opposite the drums, rotating discs can be provided which cut the mat formed to the desired width.
The invention also relates to the mats thus obtained mechanically, ie. mats including la.paire of parallel binding son are crossed by winding a wire on at least one turn around the other wire.
The binding yarns will advantageously be made of hard textile fibers, preferably impregnated with preservative materials, such as creosote, pitch or tar, and a thin metallic reinforcing yarn will be twisted with the fibers, in order to increase the strength of the mats. against mechanical or other forces affecting the binding.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Figures 8 and 9 show in plan and in section part of a mat produced by the machine. The bundles or bundles of rushes, reeds or other stem materials are arranged in parallel and the pairs of son 12: and b tie these bundles transversely, the wire b surrounding the wire 12: with at least one turn between two successive bundles. The reinforced yarns allow substantial clamping of the binding yarns so that the natural expansion of the stems forming a boot brings the boots very close to each other and the mat effectively forms a uniform continuity. The material of these mats can be of varying nature and origin. These mats are good thermal insulators and find use in brickyards, greenhouse horticulture and other destinations.
