On applique généralement sur le faisceau une matière lubrifiante et collante pour sup primer l'action abrasive -et en même temps maintenir les filaments assemblés en un fais ceau compact.- Comme le faisceau est formé et enroulé à une vitesse relativement élevée, la matière lubrifiante et collante est en général encore à l'état humide ou fluide quand on enroule-le faisceau sur la bobine. Quand on enroule le faisceau humide soufi tension, il y a alors une tendance des parties du faisceau;
Ce mode ,de déplacement n'est pas entière ment satisfaisant, quand on désire augmenter notablement la vitesse de bobinage. Par exem- pie, avec des vitesses de bobinage de l'ordre de grandeur de 12 000 à; 20 000 tours par minute;
Winding device. The present invention relates to a positive winding device which can be, for example, a device for forming bundles of material in the form of a bundle at very high winding speeds. Such a device could, for example, be used for the manufacture of fibers, but could also be used for the rewinding of certain products.
In certain methods of manufacturing fibers, for example glass fibers, the fibers are assembled, as they are formed, into a bundle which is wound on a spool or other rotating support. The conditions to be fulfilled for the winding of such a bundle are other than for that of spun products. The bundle is made up of a large number of individual filaments, which are not twisted together; that is why they are not tied at the same point as in the yarn products.
If the bundle were to be wound on a spool with successive turns placed next to each other, as is usually done with spun products, the fila ments from adjacent turns could get mixed up in such a way that the beam unit would be lost.
If an attempt is made to unwind a ball formed in this way, it often results in a breakage of at least one fiber or filament, which does not unwind when the bundle is pulled back, and the broken filaments form what is known as knots. The formation of knots on the spool often becomes so important that a large part of the spool cannot unwind, resulting in a large amount of waste.
In order to reduce the splitting of the beam and the resulting knot formation, the beam can be placed on the coil in large helices, so that the various parts of the beam cross at large angles and that 'thus the tendency to mingle is largely suppressed. In this way, the knots are almost completely eliminated and, by placing the bundle in this way, it can be removed quickly for twisting, rewinding or other subsequent operations of the same kind.
A ball is formed with this desired rolling pattern by moving the bundle transversely along the ball at a relatively high rate of speed as it is wound up. It has been found that by moving the bundle at least once along the entire length of the ball, each time the latter makes one or two turns, a suitably wound ball will be produced, although for a few bundles we have obtained a satisfactory result with a displacement along the length of the ball, each time the latter made three or four turns.
Another factor that plays a role in obtaining a ball that is easy to unwind is the tension under which the bundle is wound to form this ball, an increased tension making it in. general more difficult the removal of the beam. This is especially true when making a ball of recently manufactured glass fibers, because of the tendency of these fibers to snag and wear away from each other when their surfaces collapse. touch.
The effect of the abrasive action between the fibers forming the bundle itself is materially enhanced, if adjacent turns on the spool are parallel or nearly parallel, apparently due to the increase in fiber areas. adjacent turns, which are in contact.
A lubricating and tacky material is generally applied to the bundle to suppress the abrasive action - and at the same time to keep the assembled filaments in a compact bundle. - As the bundle is formed and wound up at a relatively high speed, the lubricating material and tacky is generally still in a wet or fluid state when the bundle is wound on the spool. When winding the wet harness under tension, then there is a tendency of parts of the harness;
which are adjacent and superimposed in the ball, to be attached to each other by the sticky material; @ so that in fact the whole ball is a solid mass @of glass fibers stuck to each other: By this fact, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible; to unwind the ball during further processing of the bundle.
Many types of mechanisms serving. transversely moving the beam have heretofore been employed for high speed winding. One of the most successful ones is the rotary type.
In this known mechanism, the beam is pulled towards the ball at such an angle. in relation to the latter, that in a sense it tends to move la along the ball under the influence of its tendency to approach the ball perpendicularly. The movement of the beam in the opposite direction is caused by a suitable mechanism intended to cause the beam to move along the ball and to release it at the end of the latter.
This mode of displacement is not entirely satisfactory, when it is desired to significantly increase the winding speed. For example, with winding speeds of the order of magnitude of 12,000 to; 20,000 revolutions per minute;
it is necessary to move the beam over the entire length of the ball at a frequency of 6000 to 10 000 times per minute, if one wishes to obtain a winding by half, that is to say one, displacement on half the length of the ball each time the ball turns.
In order to obtain this increase in the speed of travel, one would have to increase the inclination of the beam with respect to the coil significantly, so that there would be a decrease in the interval required for the return of the coil. beam under its tendency to be placed perpendicular to the coil. Often, increasing the angle raises the winding tension to the point of creating the adverse conditions described above.
The winding device forming the subject of the present invention comprises a reel arranged to receive and carry a beam i and a guide for imparting to this beam an alternating transverse movement. It is characterized in that said guide is constituted by a shaft parallel to the axis of said coil and carrying complementary cams in the form of conical helices
and rotating with it, each of these cams being so arranged that its larger radius is on the same side of the shaft as the smaller radius of the immediately adjacent cam; means further serving to rotate the shaft to successively bring said cams into contact with said beam.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the winding device forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view thereof.
Fig. 2 is a plan of this device in operating position. Fig. 3 is a section passing approximately through line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the displacement bar, and FIG. 5 is a plan of this bar.
In fig. 1 of the drawing, said embodiment of the - winding device - is shown in connection with an apparatus for. the continuous manufacture of glass fibers and comprising a furnace 10 in which glass is melted and from which several streams of molten glass start. These currents are reduced to the state of continuous filaments 11 by means of a drum or a coil 12, which rotates.
The filaments wind on this reel; they are all united. to the others in a bundle 13 by a guide 14, placed between the coil and the furnace and arranged to apply a suitable lubricant and glue to the filaments, when the latter assemble into a bundle.
The coil 12 is removably mounted on the horizontal axis 15, so arranged as to be actuated at a relatively high speed by a suitable motor mechanism indicated as a whole by 16.
While the the bundle 13 is pulled towards the coil 12, it is necessary that it be moved transversely in the direction of the length of this coil, in order to prevent fibers from adjacent parts of the bundle. become entangled which would tend to prevent the beam from unwinding during rewinding or other operation.
A mechanism for moving the beam along the ball comprises an element 18, which causes this displacement and which, for this purpose, is placed near the axis 15 and approximately in the vertical alignment of the path of the beam. The element 18 comprises a transverse shaft 19, rotating around a horizontal axis parallel to the axis 15 of the spool 12 and actuated by a motor 20, in an anti-clockwise direction, looking at FIG. . 1.
The transverse displacement shaft and the associated mechanism comprising the motor 20 (fig. 1) are mounted on a support 21 which is arranged to make a reciprocating movement in fixed slides 22, pa rally to the axis of the displacement shaft.
The movement of the support 27. can be obtained by the motor 20, by means of a suitable gear, which comprises a worm 20a mounted on the axis of the motor and meshing with a toothed wheel 20b carried by the support 21.
A connecting rod 22a, eccentrically articulated at one of its ends, on the wheel 20b, with a view to making a vertical oscillating movement, is connected to the other of its ends with a fixed part 22 and forms a connection which produces the back and forth movement of the transverse displacement shaft.
When the motor 20 is running, a rotational movement is imparted to the toothed wheel 20b, so that it rotates around its journal on the support 21, thereby causing the distance from the axis of said journal to be varied. connecting rod pivot, mounted on the fixed part 22.
It will be appreciated that when the outer pivot of the connecting rod moves on both sides of the axis of the toothed wheel 20b, the distance of the toothed wheel and the fixed slide increases or decreases accordingly - and that the support 21 slides in a back-and-forth movement.
The transverse displacement of the beam 12 is under the direct control of two parts 23 having roughly the shape of propellers and playing the role of complementary cams, these cams 23 being carried by the transverse displacement shaft 19 (fig. 4 and 5).
The cams 23 may be made with a steel wire, bent into a conical helix shape, as shown, or with a suitable arterial material capable of withstanding wear by the beam. As can be seen in particular in FIGS. 3 and 4, each cam 23 extends a little more than 180.
The smaller radius end 24 of one of the cams terminates near the end 25 where the complementary cam has its largest radius and is covered by the latter.
As can be seen more particularly in FIG. 4, the smallest radius of one of the cams and the largest radius of the other are arranged in two very close parallel planes .et arranged on either side of a radial plane of the shaft.
Thus, it will be seen that, when the beam has made a complete crossing while heading towards the small radius of a cam,
it is brought into contact with the additional cam and moves in the opposite direction. A line drawn along the contour of the cam roughly follows the shape of a helix inscribed on the surface of a cone .à forming a conical helix ,,
the angle of tangency with the axis of the shaft being such that the force acting on the beam has a transverse component sufficient to displace this beam. in the direction of the length of the spool.
This angle can be varied according to the winding speed; beam tension, frequency of movement, length of movement and other less important factors; the most favorable angle which can be quickly determined by a test.
The displacement of the beam by the cams 23 has the effect of producing a ball having a width approximately equal to the length of:
cams. Any tendency of the means of transport to raise the ends. of the ball, by the fact that a delay of the bundle at both ends ,, is overcome due to the reciprocating mechanism which makes the transverse displacement shaft slack in the direction of the length of its axis, so,
to direct by this means the beam over a greater length of the coil. The result is the production of a ball of which the central part is noticeably larger. thicker than the ends, as shown in fig. 2.
The spool is operated in the same direction as clockwise to pull the beam, while the transverse displacement shaft turns in the opposite direction. Since the peripheral speed of the transverse displacement mechanism is approximately equal to the linear speed of the beam, there can be only a slight difference in tension as a result of the transverse displacement.
This allows the beam to move quickly along the ball, making a minimum angle with the axis of the spool.
The rapid transverse displacement imparted to the beam - and the back and forth movement of the displacement member produce a ball in which the parts of the beam are formed. are clearly separated, and thus rain be quickly bunkered to subject them to subsequent operations, for example twisting or rewinding them.
