<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Figure 8 is an enlarged side elevation of the serving device; to block the drum cover on the appliance.
In carrying out the invention, in accordance with the construction shown in the drawings, a rotating inner drum 1, in the form of a washing machine, is established as an open container having the general shape of a tronco tub. - nique with smaller diameter 3 the lower part at is provided with a cover 2, this drum and this cover: both being mounted to rotate in a fixed outer container 3¯ of shape corresponding to that of the inner drum 1.
The inner drum 1 comprises in its peripheral wall a series of vertical holes or perforations 4, extending in parallel all around the drum and stopping at a short distance from the top and the bottom thereof. In its base, the drum also has a series of holes or perforations 5. The side wall is shaped so as to present an arcuate section where it meets the base.
@ the lower end, the drum 1 is mounted on a support 6, disposed in and on the base of the outer drum 3. The support 6 comprises a circular plate 9 of molded metal which is fixed below the perforated base of the inner drum 1 and which has holes or perforations 8 at the places corresponding to holes 5.
The plate 7 comprises a descending shaft or spindle 9, in one piece with it, which has a necked part 10 to which is fixed, by contraction or any other suitable means, a rolling ring 11, such as a roller bearing. .
The lower end of the shaft 9 has a thread 12 for
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
receive a nut 13 established with an extension screwed on the lower end of a central pin 14 of the shaft 9, which thus serves to fix the ring 11 of the bearing in position on the @ part 10 of the shaft 9.
The ring 11 is fixedly mounted in a housing 15 made of brass or other non-corrosive metal; this housing is established in the form of a sleeve having in its middle a dimension desired to tighten the bearing race 11 with narrow interlocking. At the upper end, the casing 15 is established with a flange 16 directed inward to surround, without coming into contact with it, the upper part of the shaft 9 and on the upper inner edge. it comprises a circumferential annular washer 17 of rubber or similar elastic material to form a tight seal. the water.
At the lower end, the housing 15 descends in the form of a sleeve to a distance going below the end of the shaft 9 to form a cavity or chamber 18.
The housing 15 is established with a circumferential flange
19, which is fixed by bolts to the base of the outer drum 3. A sleeve-shaped bonnet 20, having a threaded outer wall, is screwed onto the upper part of the housing 15 and has a circumferential flange 21 s 'extending' inward, which surrounds the top of the tree
9 and which is intended to bear at its inner edge from below on the annular washer 17.
The cavity or chamber 18 in which lubricant can be placed is thus watertight, so that the bearing race and the associated parts work without danger of corrosion, due to the liquid in which the bearing is mounted.
At the top end, the drum! is mounted to rotate in bearings arranged in a fixed top plate
22 which is fixed immovably on the outer drum 3, the cover 2, of circular shape, being mounted on the drum
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
interior to serve as a closure and turning with it. In this way, a high stability of the inner drum 1 is ensured during its rotation during the drying of the laundry and other articles.
The top plate 22 has at its periphery descending studs 23, intended to engage in holes or grooves 24, made in a corresponding size and shape in the cover plate 25 of the apparatus, so that the top plate 22 is held securely to cover plate 25 of outer casing 26 of the dryer.
The cover plate 25 has a central hole or opening to receive a gasket 27, having a central cavity 28 of circular section, with tapped walls to receive the gasket 29 carrying the connector 30 of the pipe coming from the motor. . At the lower end, the trim 29 has a cavity 31 of conical section to receive the sprinkler or conical jet 32 spraying the laundry. The sprinkler or jet 32 is held in the cavity by means of transverse screws 33 by leaving a conical channel 34 between the sprinkler 32 and the walls of the cavity 31. A central vertical channel 35 passes through the sprinkler 32.
A water jet is thus directed centrally downward into the drum through channel 35 and in the form of a conical jet toward the corners of the inner drum through channel 34.
On its outer surface, the lining 27 is established with a groove or annular recess for receiving the roller bearing 36. The cover 2 of the rotating inner drum is mounted to rotate on the bearing 36.
An annular element 37, of angle section, is fixed to the inner peripheral surface of the drum 1 at its upper edge and has an inwardly extending wing 38 to form a stopper preventing laundry and other articles from falling. be pushed from bottom to top against the drum cover by the action of centrifugal force during drying when the

drum 1 is rotated.
On the inner peripheral surface of the annular member 37 is fixed a number of protruding parts 39, uniformly arranged, which are shaped so as to make an angle with the inner face to engage the faces. correspondingly shaped end pieces 40 fixed to the underside of the cover 2 on its circumference, so that during the rotation of the drum 1, during the drying operation, the pieces 39 abut against the parts 40 and drive the cover 2 with the rotating drum 1, the cover 22 and the sprinkler 32 remaining fixed.
A space or cavity 41 is formed between the base of the drum
1 and the bottom of the outer drum 2; the lower bearing, supporting the inner drum 1, as described in the above, is mounted in this cavity.
Cavity 41 also serves to receive a heating element
42 and a stirrer tube 43.
The heating element 42 may take the usual form of a coil of metal wire enclosed in a housing and fitted into an assembly sleeve disposed in the wall of the outer drum 3 to extend horizontally in the space 41, m- swam below the inner drum 1, this coil being supported, if necessary, by brackets fixed to the bottom of the outer drum 3. The element 42 can have a substantially circular or other shape to surround the lower bearing.
The agitator tube 43, through which the compressed air is returned by means of a fan driven by the electric motor
44 and by means of a tube 45, is mounted above the heating element 42, parallel to it, immediately below the rotating inner drum 1.
The agitator tube 43 consists of a smooth tube having a single inlet 46 for air or other gas and has a forked shape with two circular arms 47 extending.

laterally to generally follow the interior wall of the drum 2, these arms 47 being curved inwards and coming together to form a smaller inner curved loop 48. It is conceivable that an inner loop of substantially shape circular is formed concentrically in an outer loop of substantially similar shape, on or near the top surface,
holes are drilled in the tube and short tubular extensions 49 are provided above these holes to direct the flow of air or other gas upwards through the holes 5 provided in the perforated base of the rotating inner drum 1 in this last. The agitator tube 43 is dimensioned such and is curved so that the holes and tubular extensions 49 are established under a section and in a suitable direction so that there is an equal pressure of air or other gas at the holes, air passing through the tube substantially without skin friction and a bypass pressure being established in the tube to maintain the pressure equal at all holes.
The total section of the holes drilled in the tube is advantageously equivalent to the total section of the inlet tube and, to ensure a substantially frictionless current in the tube, the curves thereof are chosen so that the approximate radii curves are each about five times the diameter of the tube. between the curves or turns of the loops, zones of reduced pressure are formed so that the pressure of the fluid entering the cavities in the tube is uniform, giving the fluid contained in the drums a swirling or agitating motion. Efficient bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom operation to produce efficient washing of laundry and other items in the machine.
The direction of the flow of water from the sprinkler also helps produce the swirling motion and agitation.

laundry and other laundry items, since this stream is generally directed to areas of reduced air pressure in the drum.
Drums 1 and 3 are mounted in the outer rectangular casing 26 of the machine with a top plate 25 surrounding the circular openings of the drums. the walls of the casing rise a certain distance from the top plate or cover 25 and a cover 50 is fixed, for example by means of hinges, to the outer casing.
At a location on one side of the drum openings, the electric motor 44 is supported to descend from the top or cover plate 25. This motor 44 is mounted with its long axis vertical and is rotated to oscillate on the axis from. a pivot 51 fixed on a console 52 descending from the plate 25.
A drive pinion 54, having a peripheral gasket 55 of rubber or the like material, is secured to the drive shaft 53 of the motor so as to be adapted to frictionally engage the peripheral surface provided. a similar packing 56 of a circumferential flange 57, disposed around the upper edge of the rotating inner drum 1.
The electric motor 44 is intended to be swung around the pivot 51 to bring the drive pinion 54 into and out of engagement with the flange 57 provided on the inner drum 1. To this end, a vertical shaft 58 is mounted to rotate in. plate 25 and is provided, at its upper end, with a knurled knob or disc 59, intended to be actuated by hand to rotate the shaft 58 and, at its lower end, which extends to a position located below the motor housing 44, of a pinion 60 engaging with a rack 61 extending laterally from a bracket 62, fixed on a boss or liner 63 of circular section, placed at the base of the drum exterior 3.
Rotation of shaft 58 swings the motor around pivot 51 to bring drive gear 54 into and

@ out of engagement with the flange 57 of the inner drum 1, 'to ensure that the inner drum 1 is kept fixed during washing, a locking device 64 is provided. This locking device is formed by a ball 65, pushed by a spring, which is mounted in a box 65 and which rises through the bearings 67 in the top plate or cover 25 to engage in the locking position with the above the ball 65, placed in a cavity 66, having a partly circular cross-section, which is provided at a corresponding location below the flange 57.
The motor housing 44 is mounted on the console 67 which is fixed to the pivot pin 51, so that the inner drum 1 is automatically locked when the drive gear 54 is released from the circumferential flange 57.
The motor 44, (it drives a fan, is linked to the - agitator tube 46 by the tube 45 which is connected to a screwed connection 68, arranged at the lower part of the outer drum by means of a threaded ring 69. The ring 69 is established with an internal cenical face for engaging a corresponding conical tome portion of the fitting 68, which establishes a watertight seal at the location of the fitting.
The connecting pipe 45 is made of metal or molded rubber or the like; it rises in a loop at a location adjacent to the motor housing to a height above the water level in the inner drum 1, the two parts of the tube being bent out of the same plane to provide a a certain measure of elasticity in order to effortlessly and substantially fatigue-free damping the oscillating movement of motor 44 bringing it in and out of its operating position.
Tube 45 is shaped with curves or turns to provide frictionless current .; thus, the radii of the curves are advantageously chosen to be approximately five times the

tube diameter.,
The sprinkler or jet 32 is connected by means of a flexible tube 70 to a pump 71 mounted at the bottom of the outer casing 3, which allows the water in the drums to circulate from the bottom of the drum 6. to the sprinkler 32 during the washing operation. The tube 70 is provided with a removable connector 72 preferably at a location near its connection to the sprinkler 32, so that after completion of the washing operation, the contaminated water can be pumped out. drain into the sewer.
In operation, the rotating inner drum is held in a fixed position relative to the outer drum by means of a locking device mounted on the motor frame and the casing or drum is filled to a predetermined level. of water which is heated by means of the heating element mounted in the outer casing under the rotating inner drum.
The linens or other items which are washed are caused to return in the inner drum by means of air directed from bottom to top by the agitator tube and by means of water directed from top to bottom under the pressure of the pump. by the sprinkler.
After completion of the washing, the water is run off the drums and the motor is tilted in its frame to bring the drive pinion into engagement with the circumferential flange formed on the rotating inner taribour to rotate this drum in its bearings. upper and lower. The drum is rotated at high speed, for example 1,000 to 1,200 revolutions per minute, the liquid being removed by centrifugal action from the linens and other objects and flowing through the perforations provided in the wall of the rotating inner drum.
Drying may take a few minutes, after which the items are dry enough for ironing. Pressurized air is preferably passed through the agitator during drying, but the heater is generally only used to heat the water during washing. the other connection of the pump being made at the bottom of the external fixed drum 3, e @@

Figures 2 and 8 show the device for locking the cover 22 on the outer drum.
The device consists of a vertical threaded spindle 73 which can be turned by means of a knurled knob 74; the pin 73 engages a threaded collar 75 having descending parts 76 at diametrically opposed points and curved arms 77 are articulated to these parts, the other ends of these arms being articulated to the upper ends of the short vertical arms of two shaped pieces 78 of the.
The pieces 76, 77 and 78 extend in diametrically opposed directions around the spindle 73, the pieces 78 passing through the guide members 79 attached to the top of the cover 22 and engaging at their free ends in stops or keeps 80 formed on the edge of the drum (Figure 2). Thus, by turning the knob 74 during locking, the curved arms 77 assume the position indicated in broken lines in FIG. 8 and the parts 78 are moved outwards in the opposite direction to engage by their free ends in the stops or keeps 80.
