Process for washing linen and other similar goods, and machine for carrying out this process. The present invention comprises a method for washing laundry and other similar goods, as well as a machine for its implementation.
The washing process included in the invention involves passing the laundry to be washed alternately from one region of the treatment bath to a second region thereof while being imparted to it in alternating rolling and unwinding motions.
The machine for carrying out this method comprises a box-envelope, a liquid container arranged inside the box-envelope, a perforated basket for the laundry, rotatably mounted inside said container, a locking mechanism. control for this basket, a series of vanes extending inwardly from the side wall of the basket and being arranged so that two successive vanes are angularly arranged with respect to each other so that the laundry placed in the basket, as it turns,
is engaged by the vanes and moved by them back and forth between the ends of the basket in reciprocating rolling and unwinding movements.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which the invention comprises and also makes it possible to better understand the washing process in question.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, of this embodiment, which is intended for example for household use; Fig. 2 is a section taken along the broken line II-II of FIG: 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are diagrams for explaining the washing process; Fig. 5 is a detail section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 2.
The machine shown comprises a tank or water container 10 having the general shape of a truncated hollow cone and comprising a side wall 11 and bottom walls 12, 13, the bottom wall 12 of greater extent, having a central access opening 14. The side wall 11 is slightly curved inwardly at 15, where it meets the bottom wall 12.
Inside the receptacle 10 is housed a rotating perforated basket for the laundry, designated as a whole by 16 and also having a generally somewhat frustoconical shape. This basket comprises a side wall 17 and bottom walls 18, 19, the wall 18 being provided with a central access opening 21 in axial alignment with the opening 14 of the container 10. A portion 22 of the lateral wall 17, which is opposite the open-ended portion 15 of the side wall II of the container 10, is also curved as shown, so that the side wall of the basket has a well rounded interior surface.
A quantity of perforations are made in the side wall of the basket as shown at 20, these perforations being distributed over the entire side wall 17, including its curved portion 22. The bottom wall 19 is convex inwardly to remove. complete a sort of dome inside the basket 16.
The axis of the container 10 and the basket 16 is inclined at an acute angle to the vertical, as seen in the drawing, to make the access opening 14 more accessible to the operator for loading and of emptying the basket. In addition, the inclination of the basket 16 results in a more even distribution of the laundry to be washed in the basket 16 when the liquid removal operation is initiated. We will come back to these effects later.
The rotation of the basket 16 takes place in one direction at a relatively low speed during the wash cycle and at a relatively high speed during the subsequent extraction of the liquid, thanks to a control mechanism 23 carried by the container. pient 10.
This control mechanism 23 comprises an electric motor 24 which rotates the shaft 25 of the basket 16 by means of a speed reduction gear generally designated by 26. This speed reduction gear 26, the construction of which can moreover vary, comprises a suitable cog (not shown) between the motor 24 and the shaft 25 so that the latter can be caused to rotate at relatively high and relatively low speeds. The speed reduction mechanism 26 can be adjusted to the desired speed by means of an operating arm 27.
Assume that the shaft 25 rotates at a relatively low speed, for washing, when the operating arm 27 is in the position shown in solid lines (Fig. 1), and that it rotates at a speed. high, for spinning, when the control arm 27 is brought to the position shown in broken lines. The adjustment of the operating arm 27 takes place by means of a pedal 30 hitched to the arm 27 and is within the reach of the operator's foot.
The control mechanism 23 is mounted on the bottom wall 13 of the container 10 and on a spacer 28 integral with said bottom wall. The rotary shaft 25 is integral with a seat piece 29 fixed inside the dome portion 19 of the basket 16. The shaft 25 constitutes the only support thereof, which, projecting towards the interior of the basket, is thus located in the vicinity of the center of gravity of the latter, so that there will be less to fear of vacillating movements for the basket due to unbalanced conditions thereof.
Consequently, the reactions of such movements on the shaft 25 and the operating mechanism 23 will also be avoided as much as possible.
Water can be admitted to the container 10 by means of a supply mouth 31 overhanging the container and which is arranged so as to discharge the water through the apertures 14, 21. A pipe 32 connects the mouth 31. to a manifold-distributor 33 having two pipes 34, 35 for connection with hot and cold water sources. The normal level of water in vessel 10 is indicated by a dashed line 36.
The machine shown comprises, inside the basket 16, suitable means for agitating the laundry in the washing liquid. These means are constituted by several blades 37, 38 projecting inwardly. These vanes are provided on the interior wall of basket 16 to engage with the laundry when the basket rotates. In the drawing, four blades have been shown inside the basket 1.6, but of course a larger or smaller number of these blades could be provided there.
The vanes 37, 38 are provided in the side wall 17 of the basket 16, the vanes 38 being arranged in a radial plane and the vanes 37 being directed angularly or in a way helical. Note that the vanes are set so that as they reach the water surface the point of contact with the water gradually moves in a horizontal direction (see Figs. 3 and 4). It will be understood that the vanes 38 could also be arranged helically inside the basket, in which case they would be arranged inversely with respect to the vanes 37.
In other words, the vanes 37, 38 would define corresponding left-pitch and right-pitch propeller segments. The vanes 37 and 38 can be formed in any suitable manner, such as for example by vacuuming the metal constituting the basket 16. The washing effect of the vanes 37 and 38 will be described in detail later.
From the above description, it is understood that the receptacle 10, the basket 16 and the control mechanism 23 constitute a unitary block. A flexible or elastic suspension for this unit block is provided inside a box-envelope 41. It is constituted by a set of elastic supports 42 distributed around the container 10 and supporting the latter inside the container. box-envelope 41. Each elastic support 42 com takes a pair of springs 43, 44, one end of each of which is connected to the container 10, while the other ends of the pairs of springs are supported by brackets 45 attached to the envelope box 41.
However, it goes without saying that any other elastic mounting device could also be provided for the block of parts mentioned.
The envelope box 41 includes a frame 46 with side fence panels 47 attached thereto. On the front, it comprises an inclined wall portion 48, as shown, provided with an access opening 49 in axial alignment with the openings 14, 21, the opening 49 being provided with a closing cover 51 This is articulated on the box-envelope 41 and provided with a handle 53. The cover 51 is provided with an elastic sealing washer 51a which, in the closed state, engages with the edge of the opening 49 so as to establish a watertight seal.
A flexible annular bellows 50 is provided to close the space between the container wall 10 and the wall portion 48, while allowing some movement between the container 10 and the casing 41. The bellows 50 is formed of flexible material. such as, for example ,. rubber, fixed, on the one hand, to the bottom wall 12 of the container 10 and, on the other hand, to the wall portion 48 of the casing 41. The mouth 31 passes through an opening formed in the wall side of the flexible bellows 50, as shown in 50a. The liquid can be drained from the container 10 by suitable means.
The latter comprise a pump 54 which is controlled by the motor 24 to evacuate the water from the container 10. A duct 55 connects this container with the inlet side of the pump 54, the discharge side 56 of which is connected to a flexible hose going outside to unload. A valve 57 is interposed between the container 10 and the conduit 55. It can be operated by means of a handle 58 placed outside the box-envelope 41.
The operation of the machine shown is as follows: First, the laundry is introduced with a worm and a detergent, such as for example soap, in the basket 16 through the access opening 49 and water is admitted to the receptacle 10 through the mouth 31. The adjustment arm \? 7 is placed in the. washing position, as shown in solid lines, after which the shaft 25 and the basket 16 are put into slow rotational movement when the motor 24 is supplied with electric current. The basket 16 thus rotates in a relatively slow movement in the direction of clockwise movement, looking in the direction of the fib. 2.
The laundry submerged at the bottom of the basket 16 is alternately engaged by the vanes 37 and 38 to. as they rotate. When the laundry is in contact with the blade 38, it is moved towards the dome 19 in the basket, as shown schematically at, la, fi * 3. The movement of the laundry is effected by rolling under the effect of the vane 38 which becomes progressively more inclined as it moves upwards. When the laundry comes in contact with the dome 19 of the basket, it will be brought up out of the washing liquid by the vane 38 to an upper region of the basket and then slides over the dome 19 to. as it descends into the liquid.
The laundry is then engaged by the helical vane 37 and moved to the left, as shown schematically in FIG. 4, of an unwinding movement or opposed to. that caused by the vane 38. The laundry will be raised by the vane 37 to an upper portion of the basket 16 in the vicinity of the curved wall portion 2? and will fall directly into the liquid. This cycle of operations will continue during the slow rotating movement of the basket.
The washing action described above can be aided by a kind of friction cleaning thanks to the arrangement of vanes or ribs 61 on the surface of the dome 19 of the basket, these ribs 61 being disposed radially on the dome 19, as one best seen in figs. 2 and 5. As said above, the laundry is lifted during the washing operation by the blade 38 to fall on the dome 19. The ribs 61 thereof then agitate the laundry as it slides down on the dome 19, so that the dirt is loosened therefrom by a friction action.
The ribs 61 further strengthen the dome 19 and hence the construction of the basket.
It follows from the foregoing that the laundry is agitated in the liquid so as to be moved alternately from one region of the liquid bath to another region of the liquid bath, and this in rolling and unwinding movements. In addition, during this operation, the laundry will be lifted out of the liquid and then fall back into it. This operation of stirring the laundry in the treatment liquid has the effect of loosening the dirt and preventing the stacking or twisting of the laundry.
After the washing work is finished, the valve 5 is opened 7 and the washing liquid is discharged outside by means of the pump 54. The laundry which is still damp is then spun in the basket 16 for a short time and , being in the loose or unrolled state, it can "be easily distributed all around the basket during the acceleration of the latter, the acceleration of the bet being carried out by moving the arm 2'7 to its speed position high.
Basket 16 is brought to its high speed to centrifuge the fluid from the laundry. The vibration of the basket 16 is reduced substantially by the more uniform distribution of the laundry in the basket in comparison with a machine whose basket has a horizontal axis. This advantage is obtained in the machine shown with inclined axis together with the improved washing action which it gives. On the other hand, the shaft 25 is journaled in a portion of the ma chine qui. is located above said water level, so that gaskets or other sealing devices around the shaft are unnecessary.
Rinsing the laundry is carried out like washing at the same speed, except that clean water is used instead of detergent. During rinsing, the laundry is stirred in water for a period of time during which the detergent in the laundry diffuses into the rinse water. The latter is then unloaded out of the receptacle 10 and the washing is carried out as before. The wet laundry can then be removed from the basket for further drying.
Basket 16 is preferably housed close to the side wall of container 10, substantially following the configuration thereof. Therefore, the major portion of the liquid in the container 10 encroaches on the basket 16 and will be in contact with the laundry contained therein, whereby the amount of liquid required for the washing operation can be reduced to a minimum.
The unitary construction of the container and of the control mechanism for the basket allows this assembly to be easily suspended within the envelope box 41, so as to damp or reduce vibrations originating in the basket and transmitted to the container. 10.
It will be understood from the above description that the control mechanism 23 is carried by the container 10 and determines the one and only support for the basket 16 which is rotatably supported by the control mechanism. This embodiment avoids the need to align the basket with the control mechanism in cases where these two elements are separately supported. It follows that the washing machine shown and described is of a simple and economical construction, maintenance and handling.
