<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Conformément à l'invention, et comme il a été préoisé plus haut, la lanterne 2 de même que l'organe correcteur 5, restent fixes pendant l'opération de tirage;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.1
dans le Brevet ilus- .mép:t.1Qnne.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
tenir compte.

Printer for obtaining relief photographs from multiple negative images.
"Relief camera, usable for reducing and enlarging positives, or for taking negatives". the Applicant has in particular described a printer making it possible to obtain "Selectographies", that is to say photographs in relief with a line image preceded by an optical selector with embossed lenticular elements, or Selectoscope, starting from a photograph formed by a series of distinct negative images each corresponding to a different angular aspect of the photographed subject.
Among the embodiments given by way of example in this patent, FIG. 9 relates to a type of printer intended for use when the shooting has been made at a very large size.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
distance, or practically at. infinity. In this case the arcuate movement of the entire mobile frame.
movement corresponding to the concentric sighting on the photographed subject, is replaced by a rectilinear translational movement perpendicular to the optical axis of the tireuwe. This variant embodiment presents, from a construction point of view, marked advantages, owing to the elimination of any machining of ramps or curved guide surfaces of large radius, - an execution which is always difficult in practice.
The first object of the present invention is an embodiment of a printer of the latter type, operating on the same principle, but having an improved material arrangement, the advantages of which are reflected in particular in a more compact construction. simple, more stable and precise operation, as well as more extensive adjustment possibilities, widening the field of applications of this device.
The invention further relates to means for producing a vertical optical axis printer having, moreover, the same characteristics as the horizontal axis printer described. It also relates to various other improvements which will be described later.
In accordance with the invention, the relative movement to be carried out between, on the one hand, the special camera referred to in the above-mentioned patent, in which the multiple shot to be taken is placed, and on the other hand the projection lantern, and the chassis-holder frame, is no longer ensured by a common displacement of this lantern and of the frame, but indeed by a transverse movement of the camera alone. Most of the printer can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
thus made fixed and the production of the rolling cart on which the camera itself is placed does not present any difficulty.
In the patent in question, means have tiéjà been provided for shifting the plane of the proof relative to the vertical pivot of the frame carrier, in the longitudinal direction of the printer. Practice has shown that it could be advantageous to give this offset a greater value than that originally planned, and in view of which a simple sliding of the test-holder frame inside the frame which receives became insufficient. The present invention therefore also relates to constructive means making it possible to impart to the frame-carrier a relatively large stroke, with respect to its vertical pivot axis, and this in such a way as to be able to conveniently adjust this displacement.
Finally, the Applicant has observed that, in a "rectilinear" device of the type to which the present invention relates, the parallactic selection of the images, that is to say that which is obtained by gradually varying the image. The angle at which the light rays strike the surface of the Selectograph caused a certain distortion of the projected image.
It therefore recommends, for the rectilinear type pullers in question, the use of the known system of "sliding" selection, in which the selector network and the photosensitive surface effect a transverse relative movement, in close contact. 'from each other, during the recording run of the device, or of the printer. The constant parallelism between `` the cliché and the test
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
can thus be preserved and the very cause of the distortions in question is therefore eliminated.
A first embodiment of the printer according to the invention is shown in axial longitudinal section and in plan, in Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings, 1 designates the frame, 2 the projection lantern and 3 the multi-objective camera, used for taking the negative image, and also for projecting it. This photograph with multiple horizontally juxtaposed images is designated by 4, 5 designates the convergence-correcting optical member referred to in the aforementioned patent, this member preferably being fixed in a frame with double offset 6, allowing the adjustment, and the placing in line of said member in the optical axis of the printer. It is in the interest of this organ to be as close as possible to the objectives of the apparatus 3, to avoid any loss of field.
On the other hand, in order to reduce the effects of the spherical aberration, and to increase the sharpness of the proofs, this optical organ 5 must be strongly diaphragm.
Finally, and in accordance with another characteristic of the invention, said optical member is preferably formed by one of the two halves of a duplicable symmetrical lens, the convex face of which is turned towards the photosensitive surface. This particular constitution of the optical organ also contributes to reducing the effects of the aberration of sphericity and of field curvature.
The positive proof-holder and Selectograph-holder frame, designated by 7, is placed in a frame-holder frame 8. Preferably,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
nence, intermediate means of any type, not shown, are provided between the chasie 7 and the frame 8, to allow a certain decentering of the frame, and thus modify the framing of the projected image '*
In accordance with the invention, and as it was preoisé above, the lantern 2 as well as the correcting member 5, remain fixed during the drawing operation;
o is the camera 3 which moves transversely and perpendicular to the optical axis, between the lantern and the member 5,
For this purpose, a raceway formed in the example chosen by a U-bar 9, is secured to the frame 1. On this bar 9 moves a carriage 10, using rolling rollers 11 and rollers lateral guide 12 '. Preferably, the rollers 12 are three in number, the central roller 12 'being elastically mounted, so as to take up the play, and allow the carriage 10 to roll as precisely as possible on the iron 9.
This device for resiliently mounting the roller 12 ', not shown in the drawing. can be produced in different ways, without departing from the scope of the invention.
The rotational movement which must be imparted to the frame 8 in synchronism with the transverse movement of the apparatus 3, is caused, in this first embodiment, by the following mechanism.
The carriage 10 carries a rectilinear rail 13, the obliquity of which. relative to the optical axis of the printer, can be adjusted for example by means of guides 14, On this rail 13 is elastically
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
supported by a roller 15 carried by a lever 16 integral with the vertical axis 17. This axis 17 is suitably guided in the frame 1; at its lower end, it carries an arm 18, at the end of which is articulated a rod 19. The other end of this rod is articulated on an arm 20, of the same length as the arm 18, and fixed to a vertical pivot 21, also guided in the frame 1.
The elements 18, 19 and 20 constitute an articulated parallelogram, by the action of which the angular movement imparted to the axis 17 is transmitted to the axis 21. The upper end of the latter carries a plate 22, possibly supported by rollers 23 which roll on a table belonging to the frame 1, and facilitating its rotational movement around the axis 21. On the plate 22 can be moved longitudinally the sole of the chassis support frame 8, by means of operating buttons 24 controlling gears which mesh with longitudinal racks 25 of plate 22.
The operation of this device is as follows:
The first of the images carried by the photograph 4 is projected onto the positive photosensitive surface, through the member 5 whose convergence is such that this image is formed in the plane of said surface. The camera and its carriage are then at one of the ends of their transverse travel, for example at the position indicated in phantom lines in FIG. 2. In this position, the roller 15, pushed back by the rail 13 , itself occupies the position shown in phantom, so that the assembly 22-8, itself coourpe the oblique position shown.
@during the movement of the carriage 10 in the direction indicated by the arrow, the various images carried by the photograph 4
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
are successively projected, and, due to the gradual modification of the inclination of the chassis carrier 8, modification brought about by this displacement, these images progressively impress the photosensitive surface, in the form of image lines. each corresponding to one of the lenses of the Selectograph. FIG. 2 shows in solid lines the position occupied by the moving parts, when the device 3 and the carriage 10 are at halfway. Recording is completed when said members have reached their extreme position, symmetrical to the starting position shown in phantom.
If the frame 8, by the operation of the buttons 24, is brought into coincidence with the axis 21, the image of the objects located at infinity, which is formed in the plane of the pivot 21, since the member 5 is chosen - if to make the rays coming out parallel from successive objectives converge on this point, they will appear in the plane of the photosensitive surface itself. Under these conditions, the images of all the other objects situated further forward would themselves all form in front of the plane of the photosensitive surface. In practice, however, it may be advantageous to distribute the image of the various objects visible in the photograph below and beyond the plane of the sensitive surface.
The displacement that can be imparted to the frame 8, relative to the plate 22 which supports it, makes it possible to ensure this distribution of the planes at will, as has been specified in the above-mentioned patent. , but to a greater extent, and with more manageable and precise means than those provided for in this Patent. Of course, the focusing will be modified accordingly, by acting on the component 5, so that the image clean
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is formed in the new plane occupied by the sensitive surface, and no longer in the plane of the pivot.
The drawing shows a simplified embodiment, allowing the image to be printed in only one format. To produce an apparatus allowing the printing of photographs of different formats, it suffices to make the rod 19 extensible, and to provide a movable assembly of the plate 22, and consequently of the pivot 21, along the frame 1. To each format will correspond a member 5 of appropriate characteristics, normally ensuring the formation of the image in the plane of the pivot 21.
With a printer of this type, it will be possible to dispense with carrying out the additional focusing which has just been mentioned, in the case where a displacement of the planes is effected; in fact, it will then suffice to make the plane of the sensitive surface coincide with the plane where the convergence of the rays takes place, and to move back the pivot 21 by a corresponding amount. The result obtained remains the mens.
FIGS. 3 and 4 show, respectively, in front view and in cross section, an alternative embodiment of a printer operating according to the same general principle as that represented in FIGS. 1 and 2, but with a vertical optical axis, this arrangement making it possible to establish an apparatus of less bulk and of even simpler construction.
A peculiarity of this variant embodiment eonsiste in the fact that the raceway intended for 1 ° mobile equipment is constituted by the camera itself, which is therefore fixed, as in the embodiment described and shown.
EMI8.1
in the ilus- .mép Patent: t.1Qnne.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The same reference numbers have been adopted in fibers 3 and 4, to designate bodies comparable to those in Figures 1 and 2: The fixed part of this printer includes the frame 1, on which directly rests the camera 3 with objectives multiple, placed with the oliché at its upper part The body of the apparatus 3 is established so as to form the tracks for the support rollers 11 and the guide rollers 12, fulfilling the same functions as above . The carriage 10 is extended downwards, on either side of the camera, to form the branches 27 supporting the horizontal axis 21 around which the box 8 pivots which receives the frame 7, which contains the Selectograph and the photosensitive surface.
In order to allow the displacement of said frame relative to the pivot 21, along the optical axis of the printer, the latter has @ it on the frame by means of a frame 26, integral in rotation with the pivot 21, and to which this frame is connected by means of adjustment screws 25 which play the same role as the racks mentioned above. Of course, and without departing from the scope of the invention, means can be provided for simultaneously controlling these four screws , or replace them with any other suitable device. The parallelogram which controls the pivoting of the chassis-carrying frame is, here again, constituted by an arm 18 integral with the axis 17, by the articulated rod 19, and by an arm 20 with which the pivot 21 is integral.
For the sake of the drawing, this arm 16 has been shown opposite the arm 18, relative to the axis 17 ,. In reality, it is wedged on this axis, on the same side as the arm 18. Under these conditions, the rotational movement imparted to the frame 8 around the pivot 21, during the movement of the carriage 27, is reversed from that shown. in figure 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The oblique rail 13 is adjustable in inclination in the buttonholes 14 made on the body of the apparatus 3. On this rail resiliently carries the roller 15 which turns at the end of the control lever 16, also slaved on the 'axis 17.
The operation of this second printer is completely identical to that of the first given embodiment. It too can be easily set up with a view to drawing proofs of different formats, by making the oranches 27 and the articulated rod 19 extensible by any device.
It is still possible, if it is considered preferable, to permanently mount fixed tracks on the frame 1, on which the rollers 11 and 12 will bear. In this way, the camera 3 can be of a lighter construction and, if it is exposed to the risk of collisions, during its use, outdoors, for example, the fixity of the projected images will not be affected by any damage to the raceways that it must otherwise behave.
It was indicated above that the parallactic selection could be replaced by a selection by sliding, in the printers according to the invention. Appropriate mechanical devices, causing this relative sliding between the selector network and the photosensitive layer, in synchronism with the overall displacement of the apparatus, have already been proposed, and therefore do not need to be described in more detail. here. Their adaptation to the printer shown presents no special difficulty. Such a device has been schematically indicated at M in FIG. 7; it is fixed to the frame 8.

Figures 5,6, 7, which correspond to the first embodiment given, show a means of keeping the chassis frame always parallel to the negative plate, during the printing operation, when using the selection by. slipping.
In this variant embodiment, the frame 8 is not rigidly secured to its sole, as has been shown in FIG. 1; it rotates freely on the latter, by means of a vertical pivot 28. At the lower part of this frame are articulated two rods 29, the other end of which is articulated on a return plate 30. , and which forms a first articulated parallelogram.
On the opposite face of the plate 30, are articulated by one end two other rods 31, the other end of which pivots on two fixed points of the frame 1, to form a second parallelogram.
Thanks to this arrangement, the frame 8 can pivot freely on its sole, and the latter can move longitudinally on the racks 25 of the plate 22. Thus, the frame 8 will not cease to remain parallel to itself, and parallel to the negative image, when it is brought closer or far from the organ 5, this condition being essential to eliminate the distortions mentioned above. However, the pivoting movement of the plate 22, controlled by the transverse movement of the apparatus 3, causes a lateral translational movement of the frame 8 with respect to the optical member 5, when the pivot 28 of this frame does not coincide. not with pivot 21.
This transverse movement of the frame 8 has the result of creating an additional effect of parallactic selection, which is added to the selection by sliding provided, and of which it is necessary

take into account. The two side éorans 32 visible in Figures 1 and 2, perform this function. These screens are movable on the carriage 10, against the objectives of the apparatus 3, and making it possible to hide at will a certain number of the objectives, 4 at each end of the row.
As a result, the total angle of the beams of light rays which strike each of the lenses of the Selectorograph can be reduced to the extent necessary so that the effect of the main selection by sliding, to which is added that of the additional parallactic selection, does not exceed, in total, the width of each lens of the Selectograph.
