Toute tendan-
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Extendable metal prop.
The present invention relates to a metal prop for mines, buildings, etc., which is telescopically extendable and can be locked in any desired extension position by means of an instant locking and unlocking device, thanks to which the positioning of the prop and its removal by collapse are made very easy.
According to the invention, the locking of the movable part of the prop on the fixed part thereof is effected by means of an eccentric. Compared to the usual wedge locking, eccentric locking offers the advantage of greater safety, due to the absence of slipping, and of greater ease of maneuvering as a result of this. that it suffices, to block or release the prop, a very small rouveuient of rotation of the eccentric, easily controlled using a lever, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The description of the appended drawing, which shows two embodiments of the invention by way of example, will make it clearer. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a prop according to the invention.
Figs. 2 to 6 are cuts made along lines II-
II to VI-VI, respectively, of FIG. 1, and
Fig. 7 shows a strut of simplified construction, in a section similar to FIG. 3.
In Figs. 1 to 6, which show a heavy prop specially designed for supporting these mine galleries, the fixed part of the prop is designated by a, the movable part by b and the locking eccentric by c
The fixed part a consists of an iron 1 with a double T profile on which are welded two eccentric support plates 2 (Fig. 3) and two flat bars 3 (Fig. 6) closing the sides of the profile 1.
In the double sheath thus formed slide the two elements 4, 5 of the movable part b, in this case two U-shaped irons (Fig. 2), which are connected at the top by the head 6 of the prop, welded to these two elements.
The locking eccentric c is mounted on a pin 7, between the plates 2 of the fixed part a. It is doub-e and frames a bearing 8 which supports the median part of the axis 7. On either side of the bearing 8, which is welded with iron 1, the wings of the latter are derived at 9 for allow the two lobes of the eccentric to bear against the part ... obile b engaged in the fixed part a.
It is clear that if the eccentric is maneuvered in the direction of tightening, it lifting its control lever 10, it will block the box b in 1,., Part a which is lined internally, on the side opposite to the eccentric , of li bronze furs, for example, on which rub the elements 4,5 of part b. Any tendan-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that of part b to enter part a, has the effect of tightening the eccentric more and of locking part b more surely. On the contrary, if part b is removed from part a to extend the strut, the eccentric loosens and allows this movement.
Its action can be compared to that of a ratchet, but with the advantage that this action is not exerted on fragile teeth, but on sturdy flat surfaces.
In practice, the eccentric being loosened and the prop placed in the desired location, part b is lifted by hand until the head 6 bears against the roof of the gallery to be supported, then the eccentric is tightened by means of the lever 10. The prop is thus brought up to height by a very rapid maneuver, on foot.
This done, a lifting screw 12 is attached to the Dartie on the strut, the nut 13 of which is provided with tabs 14 resting in hooks 15 of the plates 2, on the side opposite the eccentric, and fixed on the part b by means of a pin 16, a fork elm yoke 17, attached to the end of the screw 12. The pin 16 passes through one of the two holes 18 of the yoke, one made to coincide with the 'one of the holes 19, a series of which are drilled from place to place in the ± part to allow the yoke to be fixed at different levels. The coincidence of the three 18, 19 is facilitated by the fact that the spacing of the holes 18 of the yoke is less than that of the holes 19 of part b, for example by a = 1-pitch.
By turning the screw 12 at: 03 = at a pin engaged in a hole 20 of this one, it is screwed in the fixed nut 13 to lift part b until refusal, by means of the yoke 17.
The eccentric is blocked again. ± and, if the pressure supported by the prop is high, part b is wedged in part a by means of a pin 21 inserted into one of the holes 22 of part a , under part b or through one of the holes 19 of the latter, the spacing of which is, preferably, different from
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that of the holes 22 to facilitate the coincidence with the latter.
Screw 12 can then be unscrewed and removed with nut 13 and yoke 17, to adapt it to another prop:
Likewise, after having wedged the eccentric by means of the key 23, the control lever 10 can be removed. The wedge-shaped key 23 passes through slots 24 of the plates 2, on which it takes. support to wedge the eccentric (Fig. 4).
When it is desired to remove the prop by collapsing, first the setting pin 21 is removed so that part b of the prop is only retained by the eccentric c. The prop is then caused to collapse by shifting the eccentric by a blow applied to the key 23.
In the variant shown in FIG. 7, the prop is of a lighter and simpler construction, suitable for a building prop. Part a1 has a triangular section, obtained by V-bending across its width a flat iron 25 to which another flat iron 26 is welded to close the triangle. In the fixed part a1 can slide a T-shaped iron which constitutes the movable part and on which the locking eccentric cl acts through an opening made in the flat iron 26 at the level of the eccentric.
Two lugs 27 forming iers for the axis 28 of the eccentric, are welded to the flat iron 26 on either side of the opening and carry 13 wedges 29 for the eccentric. The control lever 30 may be in one piece with the eccentric, or removable jammed in the previous example.
This building prop does not have a lifting screw or setting pin, the olocage of the part b1 in the extended position? Being provided simply by the eccentric cl. It may be advantageous to make the part bl in wood in the event that it is desired to be able to nail other pieces of wood to the prop.
Other embodiments of the invention can easily be imagined and it goes without saying that monifications could
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
be made to the details of embodiment which have been described and shown by way of example only.
