 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   Figs.

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF INVENTION PATENT Mr. Georges FRERE Metal prop.

   The present invention relates to metal props of the type comprising a head shank sliding inside a base shank in which it is locked using a lock comprising a wedge housed between the head shank and a collar secured to the base barrel. A construction which appears advantageous from the point of view of the rapidity of the release of the prop by collapsing, consists in giving the wedge an inclination such that it tends to release automatically when it is not retained by a lock consisting of 'a key or an auxiliary wedge.

  The props constructed according to this principle have not, however, given satisfaction in principle, because due to the inevitable defects of planimetry and inclination of the surfaces in contact, there are excessive pressure locations and deformations which oppose each other. to the normal play of pieces.

   According to the present invention, these drawbacks are avoided by forming the self-releasing wedge of at least two parts in mutual contact along arcuate surfaces allowing these parts to move angularly with respect to one another so that their bearing faces always apply exactly. on the corresponding faces of the head barrel and the collar. To block this compound wedge in position, it suffices to immobilize one of its constituent parts by means of a key passing, for example, through windows made in the side walls of the stanchion.

   While the compound wedge serves to clamp the head barrel into the base barrel, it is important to be able to quickly bring the head barrel against the roof when placing the stanchion. For this purpose, according to the invention, an expander is advantageously used, consisting of a yoke with double wedge intended to make the head shank integral with this yoke, the latter resting on the collar of the base shank by means of '' a lifting wedge, so that by acting on it, the head barrel can be raised until it is firmly pressed against the roof.

   On the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 schematically shows, by way of example, a prop according to the invention, in vertical section along line 1-1 of FIG. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of this prop.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are respectively cross sections taken along the lines III-III, IV-IV and V-V of FIG. 1.

   Fig. 6 shows a variant, in partial vertical section.

  The prop represented on the Fis. 1 to 5 consists essentially of a head shank 1 and a base shank 2, both of quadrangular, hollow section, and of a locking lock whose body is indicated at 3.

   The very elongated wedge-shaped head shank 1 is surmounted by a head 4 which rests against the roof. To the lower part of the barrel 1 is welded a stop catch 5 intended to prevent it from disengaging from the lock if it is slid excessively upwards.

   The barrel. base is fitted with a plate 6 attached to its base and pierced with two cleaning holes 7.

   At the top of the shaft 2 is welded the collar 3 constituting the body, in the form of a truncated hollow pyramid, of the blocking lock, the side faces of which are pierced with windows 8. between the inclined face 9 of the collar 3 and the head shank 1 is interposed a wedge composed of three parts, namely a locking wedge 10 in contact with the shank 1, an unlocking wedge 11 in contact with the face 9 of the collar and a ball 12 consisting of a body of revolution engaged between arcuate faces, of corresponding shape, of the corners 10 and 11, so as to allow the latter to move angularly with respect to one another under the effect of external forces. The corner 11 is provided with two side tabs 22 intended to hold in place all the parts of the lock.

   Likewise, the ball joint 1 is advantageously provided with cheeks 23 which hold it between the corners 10 and 11.

   The angle between the face 9 of the collar and the inclined face 13 of the barrel 1 which is opposite it is chosen large enough so that the compound wedge is self-releasing, that is to say tends to escape towards the top of the collar 3 under the effect of an increase in the thrust exerted by the barrel 1. This movement of the compound wedge is prevented by the introduction of a locking wedge 14 bearing on the collar 3, the wedge 14 being driven through the windows 8 and bearing, by its inclined face, against a corresponding inclining face of the release wedge 11.

   Under these conditions, the sinking of the barrel 1 under the thrust of the roof ensures that this barrel is clamped more and more forcefully in the lock, while the unlocking is carried out easily when the wedge 14 of a blow with the hammer, the wedge 11 then automatically sliding upwards and at the same time releasing the clamping of the barrel 1.

   The locking wedge 14 is provided with a removable pin 15 which prevents the fall and scattering of the interior parts of the lock when they are no longer clamped by the wedge 14.

  Removal of pin 15 allows disassembly of the lock.

   To put the prop in place, use is advantageously made of the expander described below which is supported on the collar 3 of the lock by means of a wedge 16.

   The expander consists of a U-shaped yoke 17, the back 18 of which has the same inclination internally as the face 13 of the shaft 1. The branches of the yoke are pierced with windows 19 and their lower faces have a corresponding inclination. to that of corner 16. This one also has the form of a U placed in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 opposite direction to the U of the yoke and rests on the collar 3 so that by driving out the wedge 16, the yoke 17 is raised relative to the collar.

     .The yoke 17 is made integral with the barrel 1 by two wedges, one 20 which rests against the barrel 1 and the other 21 which is introduced through the windows 19 and blocks the wedge 20 and the barrel 1 in the screed. Thus, when the lifting wedge 16 is driven out, the sliding barrel 1 is lifted and its head 4 pressed firmly against the roof bels, after which it is fixed in position by the locking of the lock by means of the latch 14 It is then possible to disengage the wedge 21 and remove the stent whose role has been terminated.

   The prop according to the invention has the advantage of being robust and simple, and of ensuring easy release of the lock when it is necessary to collapse. It is possible, if desired, to increase the elasticity of the clamping by interposing wooden boards, for example between the corner 10 and the face 13 of the sliding shaft or between the latter and the adjacent face of the screed.

   Changes in form and construction can of course be made to the prop described. Thus the ball joint 12 can, as indicated in FIG. 6 be made in one piece with one of the corners. The section of the barrels can obviously have any suitable or usual shape. The extender can also be used with other forms of prop.

   The ball joint 12 may be in the form of a cylinder, a sphere or in general any body of revolution. It is generally advantageous to give it the shape of a cylinder which is easy to manufacture and produces sufficiently developed contact surfaces to avoid too great a concentration of forces. Whatever form is adopted, it must allow play of the two wedges 10, 11 so that they will always remain engaged, over their entire surface, with the faces of the barrel 1 and of the yoke which serve as a support for them.
