<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

comme orpanee de verrouillage commun des coins transversaux, il est recommandable d'adopter des valeurs de transmission ou des pas différents; cette solution offre l'avantage de permettre, suivant les 'besoins, un fonctionnementdoux ou brutal des coins transversaux pour conférer à ce renre de réalisation de l'étançon, la souplesse éventuellement nécessaire, il est recommandable d'inter- caler une garniture élastique entre l'organe transversal principal et l'organe de verrouillage proprement dit;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

METAL ETANOON FOR MINING
The invention relates to a metal prop for mines, the internal element of which, of quadrangular section, is held in a movable or sliding manner in the external element of the prop by a wedge mechanism arranged in a pocket or. lock chamber. The invention consists in that one or more pairs of clamping wedges are shown so as to move in a horizontal plane, transversely to the longitudinal axis of the stanchion, such that part of the pairs of wedges act on the inclined face of the inner member of the prop which is adjacent to the equally inclined face of the inner member on which the other part of the pairs of wedges act.
The direct contact of the tightening wedges with the vertically movable internal element of the strut can, in certain cases, be detrimental for this element, according to the invention, it is pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
comes this effect by interposing intermediate nieces yes can be moved horizontally by the internal element of the strut, also transversely to the direction of the horizontal pushes of this element, but not like the tightening wedges themselves, and which act on this element. The transversely movable clamping wedges in the manner indicated, yes can also be made up of several parts, are, according to the intention, directly or indirectly actuated or served by common locking members.
The locking chamber or pocket is equipped at the top and bottom with walls which assemble and consolidate the side walls, advantageously arranged perpendicularly or parallel to one another, forming the support of the clamping wedges. The aforementioned side walls can also form an acute angle between them. to increase the work of friction or the work of friction and deformation of the strut, relieving the members of the locking device, it is further proposed to act on two adjacent sides and preferably on all four sides of the strut. internal element of the strut, brake linings or brake and crush linings.
The clamping arrangement for prop according to the invention presents the following advantages; Extensive fitting, and consequently with a developed surface, of the conical internal element, of quadrangular section. Reduction of transverse tensions thanks to an extremely favorable distribution of the horizontal thrusts on the walls of the chamber or locking pocket. Completely or almost completely closed form of the chamber or pocket. Large compensation for manufacturing inaccuracies.
The common locking provided, according to the invention, for the transverse belts which act on adjacent surfaces of the internal element of the prop is intended to ensure the purity and simplicity of the service of the prop during woodwork and recovery.
This locking can be achieved in various ways: for example, it can advantageously also consist of a transverse wedge or a vertical wedge or a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
union of such wedges. A very simple embodiment is to lock the transverse wedges or pairs of transverse wedges movable towards each other in a horizontal plane, of the two adjacent surfaces of the internal element clamp which are turned towards the clamping device, by means of a double wedge or eccentric cone mounted so as to rotate on the or in the lock and which, generally, will form only one sector of 'an organ of the kind indicated. depending on the direction of rotation of this double ooin or cone, the transverse corners are tightened, or are relaxed in the direction of loosening.
The double wedge or cone may, according to the intention, also consist of two barley in the form of wedges or cones, which are advantageously coupled together and also provided with gaskets or elastic supports. This embodiment of the lock and its parts makes it possible, even more than the embodiment already described, to achieve a very closed arrangement, thanks to which the soiling of the active surfaces which can, in certain cases, strongly upset the operation is prevented. efficiency of the wedge mechanism.
A very closed construction of the chamber or pocket of the clamping device further enables locking with screws or bolts, such as a screw or bolt-shaped organ arranged on it. or in the wall of the chamber or pocket, actuates a main transverse member, similar to a bridge, which extends from the horizontally movable parts or members acting on one of the sides of the inner member of the prop up to the equivalent transverse corners acting on the adjacent side of the internal element of the prop.
The screw or bolt-shaped member can be shaped, subdivided and arranged as desired; it can be assembled freely or rigidly with the main transverse member, just as it can also, advantageously, consist of an additional assembly :! bear components, such as for example screws or bolts served or actuated by wedges, telescopic action, or a set of screws and bolts.
In the telescopic construction of screws or bolts
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
as a common locking device for transverse corners, it is advisable to adopt different transmission values or pitches; this solution offers the advantage of allowing, according to 'needs, a soft or sudden operation of the transverse wedges to give this re-forming of the prop with the flexibility that may be necessary; it is advisable to insert an elastic lining between the main transverse member and the actual locking member;
another possibility consists in providing the element of the locking device which passes through the wall of the chamber or pocket, with a flange or rim or a similar member and in interposing the compressible gasket between it and the internal face of the the wall of the chamber or pocket; the lining can advantageously also be placed inside an element of the locking device arranged on the external wall of the chamber or pocket. another possibility of common locking of the transversely movable clamping wedges which act on different sides of the internal element of the prop consists of associating a vertical wedge with a horizontal screw or bolt as in # the reverse arrangement of this layout.
The locking members can be hollow as well as the transverse corners served or actuated by them.
A particularly simple form of closed construction of the chamber or pocket of the clamping device consists, according to the invention, of an arrangement in which the transverse corners are shaped and arranged in such a way that the two outer elements move in the direction 1 of the other are held together by a threaded bolt which passes through one of the outer transverse corners and directly or indirectly the opposite corner. The side walls located opposite one another in the chamber or pocket of the locking device, which are subjected to the pressure of the clamping wedges, are, in this case, advantageously parallel.
The invention will hereinafter be explained and described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In all the figures which illustrate various exemplary embodiments, 1 designates the internal element, having a quadrangular section. of the prop. 2 the chamber or pocket of the clamping device; 3 one of the inclined faces of the internal element, facing towards the chamber or pocket, and 3 'the adjacent face of the internal element of the prop, also facing towards the chamber or pocket.
The chamber or pocket 2 of the clamping device is, in all the examples, fixed or welded to an external prop member shaped as a box but which, however, could also receive any other suitable shape.
The fig.l shows a view of fa, this and fig. la in plan view from above an exemplary embodiment in which the members 5 and 5 ', movable in a horizontal plane, transversely to the direction of the horizontal thrusts of the internal element of the stanchion, form the pair of clamping wedges housed between the side walls 6, forming an acute angle between them, of the chamber or pocket 2 to the clamping device. The top wall 4 and the bottom wall 4 'close the chamber or pocket respectively from the top and from the bottom and at the same time constitute a strong reinforcement of the side walls 6 against bending under the effect of the pressures exerted. by the corners and 5 '.
The transverse wedge 5 acts on the face 3 of the internal element of the prop and the transverse wedge 5 'on the adjacent face S' of the internal element of the prop. The two transverse wedges 5 and 5 'are assembled by the locking wedge%, also arranged transversely to the aze of the prop, which passes through the side walls 6 of the chamber or pocket and is supported by means of the 'other vertical locking wedge, however, on the front wall
9 of the chamber or pocket 2. The flexible or elastic lining 10 which is arranged between the wall 8 of the chamber or pocket and the - locking wedge 8, confers, depending on its extent and its hardness, a flexibility 'or a faculty of give in more or big monk.
It is omitted or replaced by a rigid packing in the props of the rigid type.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Corners 5 and 5 'are preceded by intermediate pieces 11 and 11', in which, as can be seen, they are partially engaged. Instead of reconnecting on the bottom 4 'of the chamber or pocket 2, these intermediate pieces II and 11' can, with a very particular advantage, rest, according to one invention, by a corresponding flange or rim, on a corner of clamping, of which they prevent contact with the internal element of the seal, in which case, of course, the actual clamping pins must themselves rest on the bottom of the chamber or pocket 2. The intermediate pieces as well that the posterior parts of the floor of the chamber or pocket 3 are provided with brake linings or. brake and crushing linings 12.
The combined action of these linings considerably reduces the horizontal thrusts which, from the internal element of the prop, act on the walls of the chamber or pocket and on the members of the clamping device. The locking wedge 7 is mainly used to tighten and µ loosen the parts of the clamping device. The locking wedge P also serves to loosen, but mainly to compensate for the inclination of the internal element of the prop; This can be dispensed with by establishing the locking wedge 7 with a corresponding obtuse angle.
However, according to the invention, the locking wedge p can advantageously also, by omitting the wedge 7, constitute the single locking member of the wedges, in which case, instead of the wedge 7, it is possible to insert a simple plate or a analogous organ.
Fig. 2 shows a front view and fig. 2a in plan view from above, a similar embodiment of the prop according to the invention, but in this case however, as a common locking member, recourse is had to a double cone sector 14, mounted eccentrically. on the shaft 13 which passes through the walls 6 of the chamber or pocket 2 and whose curved face 15 acts on the transverse corner 5 and the curved face 15 'acts on the transverse corner 5' when the member occupies the locking position .
Following the

direction of rotation communicated to the double cone 14, for example using a key which can be inserted into the operating shaft 13, the faces 15 and 15 'bring the transverse corners 5 and 6' closer together. or allow them to deviate, in view of loosening, from their tightening position, as can be seen, the double-cone eccentric 14 is supported by the metal frame 16, with reduction of the friction on the elastic lining 17, on the front wall 9 of the chamber or pocket 2. The frame 16 and the lining 17 are made in the manner of shells.
The double-cone eccentric sector 14 can also be freely mounted on the shaft 13 then established with a polygonal section, and in any case with the interposition of a flexible intermediate seal; it can also be formed using members coupled together, for example two simple cones whose bases are turned towards one another and between which can also be interposed an elastic lining. The references 11 and 11 'also denote here the intermediate pieces mounted in front of the transverse corners 5 and 5'. The braking or crushing linings 12, which are shown as surrounding the internal element of the strut on all sides, may be of special importance in this exemplary embodiment.
Instead of locking using the double-cone eccentric, it is possible, by giving the sides 5 and 5 'corners facing the eccentric, or else to the internal face of the wall P of the chamber or pocket 2, an appropriate conformation, using a vertical wedge as the single locking member, such wedge also being able to be used, in accordance with the invention, as a replacement for the locking members shown and described in the exemplary embodiments which follow .
In the exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 3a, use is made, as a locking member, of transverse wedges 5 and 5 'which act by means of parts 11 and 11', and brake linings 12 possibly to be provided, on the adjacent faces 3 and 3 'of the internal element of the prop, to a bolt 19

yes bears the member 18 in the form of a bridge and which is supported, by means of the rigid or elastic lining 17 'or even directly, on the' threaded bolt or screw of reduced length, 20 '. This screw 20 is screwed into the larger threaded or viscous element 21 housed in the front wall 9 of the chamber or pocket 2.
In the case shown, the inner screw 20 is moved using a wrench and the outer element or hollow screw 21 is provided with protrusions or bulges 22 so as to allow it to be actuated using a hammer. The screw 20 can advantageously be used for the adjustment, the tightening and the slow sliding of the prop; the hollow screw 21 will also be used for the adjustment and the tightening, but, for the remainder, for the rapid sliding, If a single screw has been provided as an adjusting member, the screw 20 can for example, instead of being engaged in the hollow screw 21, 3 'be in the wall of the pocket or chamber 2, or else, the hollow screw 21 may have a closed head, on the inner side of which then bears the locking bolt 19 or the trim 17 '.
The hollow screw 21 can advantageously also be in the form of a cap nut and, in this case, the chamber or pocket 2 comprises, at the passage opening of the locking bolt 19, a corresponding threaded connection.
FIG. 4 shows in section an example of a similar embodiment, in which the threaded bolt 23 constitutes the common locking member of the transverse corners 5 and 5 ', thanks to the fact that its thread engages, as seen above. see, in that of the bolt 19 'of the bridge the' and that it is engaged by the flange or flange 24, with the interposition of the elastic ring 17 "and the annular sliding plate 16 ', on the wall 9' of the chamber or pocket, following the direction of rotation imprinted on the bolt 23 using a key or the like, it presses the bridge 19 'on the corners 5 and 5' or allows them to be move freely towards each other.
The brake linings which can also be arranged ,. where applicable on intermediate parts as well as, advantageously

Sement, on the inside of the posterior walls of the chamber or pocket 2, are not shown.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 5, the transverse wedges 5 and 5 'are actuated jointly by the bridge 18 also assembled to the bolt 19. As the actual locking member, recourse is had to a hollow threaded bolt 25. in which is engaged the bolt 19 of the bridge. The threaded bolt 25 is disposed in the wall 9 of the chamber or pocket 2 in the manner of a pin. Its head 26 which protrudes from the pocket, serves as a housing for the locking wedge 7 '. Using the gasket 17 'which can be placed between this locking wedge 7' and the bolt 19 of the bridge, it is possible, when desired, to make the strut flexible.
The prop can, like that shown in Figures 3 and 3a, be operated in two ways: firstly by rotating the locking pin 25 and secondly by actuating the locking wedge 7 '. The rough adjustment during the installation of the prop is advantageously obtained by means of the locking pin 25, the fine adjustment being obtained by driving in the wedge 7 '. When resuming, the prop can be released abruptly by expelling the wedge 7 ', slowly by unscrewing the locking pin 25. The references 3, 3', 4 ', 6,11,11' and 12 denote here also the same parts, elements or organea as in the other examples.
Fig. 6 ,. finally, represents an exemplary embodiment of the seal according to the invention in which each of the corners 5 "and 5" "is followed by an opposite corner, respectively designated by 27 and 27 '.
The two side walls 6 ′ of the pocket or chamber of the clamping device are not arranged angularly, but they are parallel to one another. It follows that these are not the transverse corners 5 ″ and 5 '' 'but the additional wedges 27 and 27' which move towards each other. The common locking is obtained, as can be seen, by means of screws 28 and 28 'which, crossing freely las walls of the chamber or pocket 2, are engaged horizontally in the additional corners 27 and 27 '.
The locking screws, 28 and 2P 'respectively, act on each other per

the intermediary of the bridge 29 yes, advantageously, engages by its ends in recesses of the additional corners, thanks to which the additional corners can be kept apart from one another or else made free to move, A single locking screw is also sufficient to actuate the tightening wedges.
However, the presence of two of these screws offers the advantage that the service of the prop can then be carried out from two sides, in order, in the example illustrated, to give the prop flexibility or the ability to yield. , it is possible to place between one or both locking screws 28 and 28 'and the bridge bolt 29, the packing compres. sible 17 '. The bridge bolt 29 can be omitted when one or both of the locking screws 28 or 28 'are set to a longer, appropriate length; however, their net must not be able to engage in the opposite additional corner.
Instead of the bridge bolt 29 shown, a wedge, in particular a vertical wedge, can advantageously be used to form the locking member subjected to the action of the locking screws 28 and 28 '. its end or tip advantageously passes, as illustrated in fig.l, the bottom of the chamber or pocket of the clamping device.
This conformation allows rapid recovery of the prop by applying blows under the point of the wedge, while in the absence of this locking wedge it is possible to obtain rapid release of the locking wedges by application of blows, causes the locking screws, or one of them, to have a high-speed thread.
The aforementioned vertical wedge can, when it is shaped in the same way, also ensure by itself the locking of the transverse wedges 27 and 27 'and, advantageously, also lock the transverse cojns 5 "and 5" "directly, that is to say. say by removing corners 27 and 27 '. In both cases, the contact faces of the transverse corners with the vertical corner must be inclined; naturally, the wall 9 of the chamber or pocket of the clamping device can be inclined in the same goal.
The invention is not limited to the examples of embodiment indicated.

qués. It also encompasses, in particular the twin arrangement of the described and illustrated embodiments or similar embodiments, mainly so that the wedge device according to the invention does not only enclose a pair of adjacent sides of the element. inner part of the strut, but also the opposite pair of adjacent sides of the inner part of the strut.
It also includes, for example, the possibility of locking the horizontally movable clamping wedges, either directly or by means of a bridge using an eccentric or else by @ an eccentric associated with a wedge.
In the exemplary embodiments illustrated, there is. shown as the chamber or pocket of the clamp / relatively thick; in fact, thanks to. The advantageous distribution and the attenuation of the thrusts or horizontal forces, they can be relatively thinner than the walls of the clamping devices of known mining props.
