<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Process for the purification of fuels consisting of hydrocarbons.
In the usual purification processes, the hydrocarbons, such as those consisting of benzol or gasoline, optionally after prior purification with dilute sulfuric acid and with caustic soda, were subjected to washing with sulfuric acid. at a density of 60 to 66 Bé. for the purpose of removing resin-forming bodies and harmful sulfur, this washing being followed by another washing with caustic soda and then by distillation of the washed product.
The effect of the treatment with sulfuric acid is that of a polymerization and condensation of substances which tend to form resins, with the formation of combinations of low weight.

Intimate contact with the purifying agent is not possible, because the crude hydrocarbons escape from the bath by the path of least resistance.
In accordance with the invention, an intimate and effective contact is made between the hydrocarbon vapors such as crude benzol, crude gasoline, cracking gasoline and other similar products, referred to in the following as vapors. fuel, and the purifying agent, the tricresol used in particular as fuel being kept in a continuous circuit by pumping in a reaction chamber preferably furnished with a filler. The purifying agent and the fuel vapors can be conducted in parallel or countercurrent streams. uand. working in parallel streams, it is advantageous to introduce the purifying agent and the fuel vapors to the upper part of the reaction chamber.
When working countercurrently, it is more advantageous to let the fuel vapors flow from the bottom up, that is to say to meet the purification agent introduced at the top. As the filler body, porous materials, for example pumice, charcoal, coke, activated carbon or the like, can be employed in the reaction chamber, which is particularly advantageous for difficult fuels. to purify. The fuel vapors leaving the reaction chamber enter a distillation column and, when they contain a lot of dye carrier materials, pass through a filter from which the polymerization products flow into an additional column. .
Preferably, the filter is filled with one of the above porous materials or with another very porous material, for example fuller's earth, infusoria earth, silica gel or kieselguhr. Such a filter can also be placed between the reaction chamber and the first distillation column.
We can thus put in contact with large;)
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
amounts of tricresol from difficult to refine fuels, that is, those which require not only the removal of unwanted foreign substances such as resins, resin-generating bodies and free sulfur, but also that it improves its color and smell. The addition of tricresol can in these cases amount to an absolute consumption of 0.5 to 50% or more calculated on the amount of fuel, so that an amount of purifying agent fication as large as that of the material to be purified can go through the cycle.
A greater purification effect is thus obtained in time than a great economy of the process and the use of high initial concentrations is avoided.
Depending on the nature of the fuel to be purified, instead of adding the tricresol separately, it can be mixed there, from the start, in a suitable quantity.
Two examples of installations suitable for carrying out the process which is the subject of the invention are shown schematically in the appended drawings in which FIG. 1 represents an installation for refining fuels using tricresol and the figure represents an installation for refining of fuels using tricresol and an installation for the regeneration of tricresol.
In the drawings, the pipes x for the fuel to be refined are indicated in solid lines, the pipes x 'for the heating oil are indicated in dotted lines and the pipes x "for the tricresol in phantom.
According to FIG. 1, the fuel to be refined, optionally freed first of the pyridic bases and of the hydrogen sulphide, is introduced from the tank a, by means of the pump p and the piping x and by making it pass through a heater b, preferably formed by a heat exchanger, and through an evaporator c, in the upper part of a reaction chamber d. Fuel can enter
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
also from below into the reaction chamber. It is conducted by means of a pump ± 'and the piping x', in a closed circuit, as indicated by the arrows, and passing it through a heat exchanger y, from the heating oil to the evaporation apparatus c and the reaction chamber d.
The fuel heated in the heater b is brought into the evaporator at the mean boiling temperature or above.
To start the installation, the tricresol is introduced from the reservoir k into the reaction chamber d. This has false bottoms or is filled with filling masses. As the filler, porous masses such as pumice, charcoal, coke, activated carbon and the like can be employed.
In the reaction chamber d thus charged, for example with benzol vapors, the heated tricresol is continuously circulated, by means of the pump p ", from a tank 1 and via the pipe x". whereby intimate contact occurs between the fuel vapor and the tricresol in reaction chamber d and polymerization of the constituents which generate resins takes place.
the fuel vapors which leave the reaction chamber d at its lower part through the piping x "and the tricresol arrive in a distillation column e at the bottom of which the tricresol together with the polymerization products and the free sulfur separate to be returned by the pump p "to the tank 1 used for the circulation of the tricresol, The fuel vapors which leave the upper part of the distillation column e can then be condensed in the refrigerant h immediately after passing through the heat exchanger b. The condensation product constitutes the final product formed from purified fuels and is collected in tank i.
When a sufficient quantity of tricresol is in circulation, cy-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
key the reservoir k by means of a tap, which is then opened only to add new cresol as required. Preferably, the tricresol which comes from the pump p "is passed through a heater m, before it enters the reaction chamber d. A thermostat is designated by o between the evaporation apparatus c and the chamber of reaction d. The piping, which forms a branch running to the right, after the pump p ", serves to evacuate an excess of tricresol collected. in tank 1 and possibly sends it for regeneration. It can be turned on or off by means of a tap.
When activated, a second pump can be used to maintain the circulation of tricresol, but it can also perform the discharge, while the first pump maintains the circulation of tricresol.
Fuels containing many dye carrier substances further pass the vapors, possibly loaded with small amounts of purifying agent and exiting the coonine, through a filter f. to improve the color of the final product (see figure 2). The remaining polymerization products are then separated by another freestanding column g. In this case, column e and / or column g can be provided with indirect heating in an oil bath or in a sand bath, that is to say with temperate heating.
It is possible to connect to the refining installation which has just been described a usual regeneration installation, syivant FIG. 2, for the tricresol leaving the circulation. This installation consists of a distillation boiler r, a condenser s, a tank t for the remaining fuels, a resorver w for the regenerated tricresol and the reserve for the resins and the distillation residues from the column @. Regenerated tricresol can be returned from reservoir w to reservoir k. The stills from the distillation boiler r are collected in the tank v
