<EMI ID=1.1>
Clark, T.L.
Gaddy & C.E. Rist (industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 1933, Ootober, p. 1095, fig.
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=15.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>
<EMI ID=17.1>

"Process and apparatus for manufacturing
urea from carbon dioxide and ammonia ".
As is known, urea ae produced from carbon dioxide and ammonia according to the following reactions:
<EMI ID = 1.1>
It is known that these reactions can be carried out in a. single device is in two separate devices. In the case of one, the conversion yield barely reaches 25-35% and the same yield is obtained by producing urea by converting solid carbamate, previously produced in another apparatus. In the latter case, the low yield being explained by the low value of the weight / volume ratio, various means have been proposed to increase it, in particular the use of solid carbamate in compressed form or in the liquid state, the latter means obviously ensuring a maximum weight / volume ratio. The experiment has confirmed the importance of the value of the weight / volume quotient, but on the other hand, it has shown that for values which are interesting in practice, the yield increases slowly with this quotient. Indeed, according to K.G. Clark, T.L.
Gaddy & C.E. Rist (industrial and Engineering Chemistry, 1933, Ootober, p. 1095, fig. 2) for the interval 0.6 - 1.0 gr / o.o, the increase is only
<EMI ID = 2.1>
The importance that has been attributed to the weight / volume ratio factor can be justified by a scientific reason, based on
<EMI ID = 3.1>
transformed into a monovariant system by the elimination of the gas phase (C. Matignon, Chimie & Industrie 1922, June, p. 1062),
the closer to the monovariant system the more substantial the weight / volume ratio is.
However, the scientific examination of the question in its industrial aspect has led to the conclusion that until now by limiting oneself to the notion of the weight / volume quotient, we have not sufficiently generalized the application of the law of phases, by neglecting in the manufacture of urea the role of inert gases accompanying ammonia and / or carbon dioxide. It has been found in particular that the pitiful industrial yields are in the first place due to the presence of these gases in the apparatus used for the conversion of carbamate into urea, the losses calculated in C02 being able to exceed under certain conditions 50% of the anhydride used. implemented.
According to the process forming the subject of the present patent application, the two aforementioned reactions are carried out, in particular the synthesis of oarbamate and its conversion into urea, consecutively in two devices, while maintaining a pressure and a temperature such that the carbamate is present. in the liquid state or in the form of a solution in liquid ammonia, with or without water.
According to the same process, the inert gases accompanying the ammonia and / or carbon dioxide and whose presence in the apparatus

It is known that high temperatures displace the equilibrium of the system in the urea direction and accelerate the conversion of carbon.

purge. These losses are liable to increase further with the proportion of ammonia used, whereas it is known that the proportion of excess ammonia is also a factor stimulating the improvement of the conversion efficiency.
On the other hand, the process forming the subject of the present patent application by practically eliminating the gaseous phase in the conversion apparatus leaves the possibility of maintaining there temperatures appreciably higher than 1520 C and of carrying out the conversion in the presence.
<EMI ID = 8.1>
me of purge gas. Obviously, a pressure equal to or greater than the voltage of the vapors which the bath could give off must be maintained in this apparatus. Depending on the case, it may be equal to or less than the pressure allowed in the synthesis apparatus.
The reaction for converting oarbamate to urea being endothermic and the temperature in the second apparatus having to be higher than that in the first, the apparatus intended for the conversion must necessarily receive external heat. As for the first device, the heat balance can have a positive or negative balance
<EMI ID = 9.1>
of carbamate is exothermic, but the heat of reaction is counterbalanced by the heat required to bring the material to the
<EMI ID = 10.1>
the oarbamate formed dissolves entirely in the excess ammonia, possibly accompanied by water. The heat balance is positive if the amount of excess ammonia is small, while it is negative for the high proportion ammonia.
In order to maintain a desired temperature in the carbamate synthesis and conversion apparatuses, it is possible to install pressurized steam coils or respectively in the first apparatus a cold water coil. In this case the aforementioned devices take the turn of autoclaves of a sufficient diameter to install the coils there, but this solution of the problem presents serious disadvantages, in particular from the points of view:
<EMI ID = 11.1>
highly corrosive materials and very high pressures,
2.- Subjection of the coils to external pressure,
<EMI ID = 12.1>
water pump in the or cooling system of the first device,
4.- Clogging of raw material feed valves and
<EMI ID = 13.1>
It is still possible to heat or respectively cool the autoclaves externally, but in this case there are also considerable drawbacks:
1.- Formation of carbamate crusts on the walls of the first autoclave in the event of its cooling,
2.- Danger of valve clogging as in the previous case,
3.- The heating surface being small, it is necessary to maintain in the second autoclave a significant temperature difference and therefore bring its walls to a high temperature, 4.- the diameter of the second autoclave being considerable and the temperature of its walls being necessarily high they must be made very thick.
<EMI ID = 14.1>
The invention which is the subject of the present patent application makes it possible to carry out the synthesis and the conversion of carbamate into urea in a very convenient manner while avoiding the aforementioned drawbacks.
According to this invention the heating or respectively the cooling of the apparatuses for synthesizing and converting oarbamate is carried out by means of hot oils in which they are immersed. If necessary, the temperature of each of the oil baths can be maintained at different levels, in particular in the bath of the appliance.
<EMI ID = 15.1>
synthesis apparatus. The heat can be supplied to the oil baths or be removed from them by one of the known means, for example an electrical resistance or by using a steam or water coil.
The dimensions of the synthesis and conversion apparatus are determined so as to ensure the desired temperatures inside them.
According to the invention forming the subject of the present patent application, the apparatus for synthesizing the carbamate is in one of the forms described below.
According to one of the variants, the apparatus consists essentially of a reaction chamber in the form of a coil, into which the ammonia and carbon dioxide supply tubes emerge and which in turn opens into a chamber degassing
in the form of a vertical tube, the latter being provided with a tube
gas purge and a carbamate discharge tube. All of these elements, including possibly the valves, being immersed in a hot oil bath, in no point of the apparatus of the de-
<EMI ID = 16.1>
The reaction chamber office is dimensioned so that the product can optionally cool down to the desired temperature before being released, this is in the case of excessive temperature in the center of the formation of the carbamate.
In order to be able to adjust the prevailing temperature in the center of formation of the oarbamate, the ammonia and (or) carbon dioxide are preheated before the point of immersion of the tubes for feeding these materials into the oil bath comprising the carbamate synthesis apparatus. The preheating of the carbon dioxide is also advantageous in order to avoid blockages of the tube of its supply in the event of return of the molten or dissolved carbamate.
The advantage of this variant resides in the fact that no solid oarbamate deposits can occur at any point of the apparatus. However, degassing takes place at temperatures above the melting point or dissolution point of the carbamate, that is to say at relatively high temperatures. The application of this variant is therefore indicated when the proportion of purge gases is not high (for example in the case of very high total pressure or in the case of excess ammonia in a not too substantial quantity), or when the recovery of carbon dioxide and ammonia from the purge gases is easy. Otherwise, another solution to the problem would be preferred.
According to another variant, the invention of which is also claimed by the present patent application, the degassing is carried out at the temperature of liquid ammonia, the device of which is supplied, while the formation of the carbamate is carried out at a temperature. temperature
<EMI ID = 17.1>
liquid ammonia with or without water.
The apparatus making it possible to ensure the above-mentioned conditions according to the invention forming the subject of the present patent application consists essentially of a tube or an autoclave, only the lower part of which is immersed in a hot oil bath. while the upper part is not. The upper part can be provided with a sheath ensuring its cooling with water. Liquid ammonia is introduced a little below the top of the device, while carbon dioxide a little above the bottom of the device. The inert gases are extracted from the top, and the oarbamate in the molten state or in the form of dissolution from the bottom of the apparatus.
In the exceptional case of solid oarbamate deposit formation
on the inner surface of the upper part of the autoolave tube, the water circulating in the aforementioned sheath can be replaced by water vapor or hot oil; in this case we
can also use electric heating of the part
top of the tube.
In order to avoid blockage of the anhydride delivery tube
carbonic in case of return of the molten or dissolved carbamate, 1 '
carbon dioxide is preheated before entering the tube
or autoclave, and preferably before the immersion point of the tube
of its feed into the oil bath comprising the lower part
of the device.
According to the invention forming the subject of the present application for
patent, the carbamate conversion apparatus is essentially
consisting of a tube in the form of a coil or in another form providing a considerable heat transmission surface and
sufficient volume.
This device can be linked with the synthesis device of the
oarbamate without requiring any gaskets.
