<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
La cornue 50 peut être fixée à la chaudière de n'importe quelle manière appropriée, mais celle donnée titre d'exemple, aux figures 1 et 2 est particulièrement sim- ple et efficace.;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
On a trouvé par des expérience qu'en faisant passer l'huile et la vapeur de la manière décrite ci-dessus sur les surfaces cat alytiques et avec les variations décrites de la température et de la pression, il ne se produit aucune dissociation moléculaire du combustible;

Improvements in the production, using liquid hydrocarbons, of gases for combustion, lighting or other applications.
The present invention relates to the production, from liquid hydrocarbons, of gases for combustion for lighting and for other applications.
This invention contemplates improvements to the known system in which the hydrocarbon and an atomizing agent are introduced into a mixing chamber from where the mixture is sent to a gasification chamber, the resulting gas then being directed to. the place of use!
The invention includes the use of ordinary hydrocarbons as well as the use of wet or soiled hydrocarbons,

ordinary; it also promotes agitation and changes in pressure and temperature by means of which not only the hydrocarbons are gasified but also all the carbon of vegetable or mineral angina, as well as the entrained water, which make current commercial oils unsuitable for the 'adaptation in existing gas production systems.
For this reason, the present invention, which includes a method and apparatus for carrying out this method, is characterized mainly as follows:
1) The mixing chamber, which is part of a device for combining the hydrocarbon and the atomizing agent is placed outside the gasification chamber and.
communicates therewith by means of means comprising a chamber which functions to allow expansion of the mixture in its path towards the gasification chamber.
2) The hydrocarbon is introduced into the mixing chamber together with the complementary mass of atomizing fluid so as to form at least two inlets or two converging mixing jets, at the center of which an inlet or a jet of reducing fluid or fuel which can advantageously be the same fluid as that used for atomization is introduced, the arrival of the hydrocarbon being regulated automatically
3) The gasification chamber is set up to produce a series of localized pressure changes, general agitation,
of its content and a gradual variation of tempe erase
4) The gasification chamber is constructed of a material or a composition of materials capable of producing a catalytic action on the elements passing through the chamber, or it is coated with a similar material
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
5) The combination of the mixing chamber, the gasification chamber and accessory parts to our chambers, all of which are constructed, arranged and intended to function in substance as will be described with reference to the embodiments. of the invention shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings which first show an apparatus suitable for a furnace hearth for producing gas by means of crude oil and steam,
mainly as fuel for the hearth, although the surplus may be used, for example, for lighting, or heating or storage for subsequent use, and secondly an apparatus constituting an installation complete and independent of gas production and storage.

In the example of Figures 1 to 5 and particularly in Figures' 1 and 2 we * denote by 1 the boiler while

gasification chamber, these two chambers being connected at 4 and constituting an assembly which is the main part of the apparatus
The oil is sent to a heater 5 of a suitable kind through a tap pipe 6 from a power source and from there to the chamber. of mixture 2 through pipe 7. The heating medium is the va * can produced in boiler 1 and supplied to the heater
5 by a Tanne pipe 8 and a pipe 9 connected to the latter, the exhaust vapor being discharged through a pipe 10.
The steam to be combined with the oil is likewise sent to the mixing chamber 2, of the neighboring boiler 1, by means of the pipe 8, the part of the pipe / chamber 2 being provided with a valve 11. The pipe 8 can be supplied by a serheater or it can, in a suitable place be constituted by a superheater and as has been shown it can even be provided with a reducing valve 12 and a pressure gauge 13.
The mixing chamber 2 comprises a hollow member
14 fan-shaped, two complex tubes 15, 15 laterally flat in a divergent arrangement, for oil and steam, a single central tube 16 for additional steam and a tubular member 17 establishing communication between the pipe 8, the pipes 15,
15 and tubing 16, all forming a single piece

The central steam pipe 16 is under the direct control of a valve 44. The outlet 45 of the pipe 16 therefore directs the steam into the mixing chamber.

Steam and oil are sent to pipes 15,15 at or near the same pressure, reducing valves being arranged in main pipes 7 and 8 if desired.
Regarding operation, when the oil and steam valves 24 and 26 are open, the steam acts in part on the adjacent shoulder or piston face.
34 of the member 27 while a part passes through this member by means? passage 35, and the oil acts on the other face of the shoulder or piston 33 and at the same time a part flows through the annular space 31 between the member 27 and the cylinder 18 and enters the chamber of mix at the same time as the steam,
the difference in pressures on the two faces 33 and 34 being compensated by the conjugate spring 37.
The mixed oil and steam then flow from the mixing chamber 2 into the gasification chamber 3.
When the valve 44 of the central steam manifold 16 is opened the steam pressure on the member 27 is removed so that the oil inlet between the tapered ends 36 and 19 is automatically increased. under the influence of oil pressure The amount of steam supplied to the gasification chamber 3 can therefore be increased as soon as the chamber becomes hot enough to cause the reaction between the oil and the steam so that then the steam predominates over the quantity of oil which avoids carbon deposits by ensuring perfect combustion
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It can be seen that the oil and the steam coming from the tubes 15, 15 enter the chamber 2 by swirling and the steam leaving the tube 16 is directed to the center of the swirling mass,
from which results an effective mixing and a disintegration * '
It is obvious that if the oil outlet orifice 36 is blocked by a foreign matter acting to obstruct or cut off the oil supply, the oil pressure rises and automatically pushes back the member. 27 by acting on the stopper or piston face, 'this' which produces a dhasse effect and restores the normal power supply
The gasification chamber 3 is composed of two conical tubular members open at the ends 46 and 47 assembled so as to be partially in contact on the circumference and at the ends,
the latter being flanged and bolted together at 48 and 49 so as to form a retort 50 into which the gas produced is introduced through the larger end and is burnt, the hot gasification chamber 3 being. thus, inter alia, maintained / The seal 49 is advantageously established so as to compensate for the expansions and contractions thanks to the use of the convex part 51.
The seals 48 and 49 allow the rapid disassembly of the emblem 50 for cleaning etc. as well as such easy reassembly *; The small end or the anterior end of the retort 50 is connected to the furnace 652 of the boiler as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and therefore is always hotter than the opposite end or the posterior end.
Parts 46 and 47 are made of a chrome-nickel alloy in which nickel is the predominant element
This particular measure produces or causes, at an appropriate temperature of 9002 C, a:
catalytic action on the gas mixture passing through chamber 3, which prevents deposits of solid carbon and promotes the production of
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
predominant amount of methane instead of hydrogen and carbon monoxide while on the other hand the wall resists the action of heat and is not affected by free oxygen at high temperatures * According to a variant, the the catalytic action can be obtained by coating the parts 46 and 47 with a catalyst or by providing them with coatings made of a catalyst, the latter being simple or complex,
that is to say consisting either of a single element or of a composition or an alloy of two or more elements.
The outer circumference of the member 46 is provided with a series of equidistant ribs 53, 53 whose edges bear on the member 47, which forms a certain number of channels 54 between the parts 46 and 47. The ribs 53 are provided, as shown in figure 4, with elbow parts 55,55 connecting to the circular parts which produce a series of contractions / in the channels 54, 54 to connect them together and serve 1 cause constrictions to form, favoring agitation and pressure changes in the flowing gases.
Accordingly, the channels 54,54 have volumes which vary steadily increasing from the anterior end to the posterior end of the patch 50, with the exception of the end channel or the first channel 54, while that the temperature gradually decreases from the front to the rear
The smaller anterior end of the part
47 is provided with a hollow extension forming a chamber 57 at the top of which is fixed at 4, the mixing chamber 2
Chamber 57 is therefore in direct communication with both gasification? and its purpose is to allow the abrupt expansion with the mixing chamber 3 and the chamber / of the gas mixture leaving the chamber 2, before its entry into the chamber
3.
The mixture is thus rarefied and more likely to undergo the catalytic action of the parts 55.

A pipe 58 is disposed at the larger posterior end of retort 50 to conduct gas out of chamber 3. One end of this pipe 58 is connected to chamber 3 at 59 as shown in Figure 2. while its other end is directed towards the center of the retort 50, where it is bifurcated so as to provide two branches 60 and 61. The branch 60 which is formed in the form of a burner nozzle of a conventional type is directed towards the member 46 or into it, and serves to bring into this member the gas which is to be burned there The connection 61 goes to a gasometer or to a storage tank from which the surplus gas can be extracted for any use, conch.
The large end of the retort 50, that is to say the end far from the boiler, is provided with a casing 62 enclosing the pipe 58, the burner 60 and a part of the branch 61 which passes through its. closed end 63. This end 63 is constructed in the manner of a shutter device 64 for the adjustable inflow of air inside the member 46.
If, therefore, the retort 50 becomes too hot, the air supply can be reduced, which lowers the flame inside the member 46 without disturbing the action of the chamber 3 and consequently the production of gas. $ '
Retort 50 may be attached to the boiler in any suitable manner, but the one exemplified in Figures 1 and 2 is particularly simple and efficient.
As shown in these figures, the end of the hearth 52 is provided with an annular plate 65 removably attached to the boiler by fixing blades 66,66 the retort 50 is placed in a conical casing 67 which is located around the opening 68 of the plate 65, projecting therefrom as shown in FIG. 2, and is larger than the assembly 50 so that it forms
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
an annular space 69, The small end of the casing 87 surrounds the opening 68 and is fixed by a ring 70 to the plate
65.
The retort 50 is fixedly mounted in the casing 67 by means of a support 71 and a ring 72 which closes the end of the casing 67. The casing 67, the retort 50 and the plate 65 constitute therefore an accessory made in one piece but removable for the boiler; if desired, however, the casing 67 can pull attached by hinge on one side to the plate 65 so that with the retort 50 it can be tilted all in one piece to assume the inactive position or the position of operation with respect to the opening 68, to provide ease of inspection, etc.
The ring 72 is provided with a series of holes 73 which is combined with a louver device 74. In this way air can flow, under the adjustment of the louver device 74, into the space 69 , and then in the boiler hearth 52 to maintain combustion there, the air being heated by radiation by means of the retort 50, with the resulting advantages of practicing
Figure 6 will now be described which shows one form of apparatus forming a complete independent installation for the production of gas intended to be stored.
The essential constituents of the apparatus are actually or substantially in the manner already explained,
as this results from the inspection of the reference numerals which designate the same parts as those shown in figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of which 2 is the mixing chamber, 50 the retort comprising the tubular parts conicals 46 and 47 which constitute the gasification chamber 3. and the expansion chamber 57, the part 46 being provided with the ribs 53, 53 and the expansion joint 51 while 58 is the supply pipe for the gas coming from the chamber 3.
placed As can be seen, the retort 50 is, in this example placed vertically and in a central position inside
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the lower end of a cylindrical casing 73, the upper end of which forms a steam boiler 76 of the type with vertical smoke tubes. ' The boiler 76 therefore comprises a space 77 for water and steam, a number of flue tubes 78, 78 assembled in alignment with the small end or upper end of the retort 50, and a chimney 79.
A hearth or stove 80 is placed inside the casing 75, below the retort but in the axis thereof and in communication with this retort 50, so that the latter ci is heated and steam is developed in boiler 76.
The arrangement can be such that the steam is used completely in the gas production operation, this steam being sent from the water and steam space 77 to the nozzles 15,15 and 16 in the mixing chamber 3 through a pipe. 8 provided, as before, with an adjustment valve 11, a reducing valve 12 and a pressure gauge 13, as well as by a pipe 25 and the combined adjustment valve 26, the intermediate or connecting part of the pipes 8 and 25 being arranged in a coil as seen at 81 to constitute a superheater placed at the junction between the retort 50 and the flue tubes 78,78. The oil is sent to mixing chamber 2 through pipe 7, valve 24 and pipe 23 as before.
We will now move on to the description of FIG. 7 which represents a variant of the installation described with regard to FIG. 6. The retort 50 is here entirely enclosed in a heat-insulating envelope 82 and the retort is heated by a heating device. electric heater 83 mounted in a suitable circuit as shown in figure 84 The mixing chamber 3 is supplied with oil and steam from suitable sources through the respective pipes 7 and 8, and the gas is discharged to the place of storage through pipe 58.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
The rest of the apparatus is constructed, arranged and intended to function in the manner already explained, as shown by the examination of the reference numerals which designate the pieces marl as, those represented in figures 1,2,3 4,5 and in figure 6
It has been found by experiments that by passing the oil and steam as described above over the alytic catalytic surfaces and with the described variations in temperature and pressure, no molecular dissociation occurs. combustible;
on the contrary, the high hydrocarbons found in large numbers in the fuel are transformed into permanent stationary gases, mainly methane, acetylene and ethylene, instead of being transformed into hydrogen and carbon monoxide, of which only small amounts are found in the resulting gases. Heavy hydrocarbons are directly combined by hydrogen catalysis of the steam to produce methane, fixed, as well as a small amount of carbon monoxide
It has also been found that different mixtures of gases are obtained when the pressure varies and by slow combustion different gasolines can be obtained from different points of the retort.
It can therefore be seen that many different mixtures of oil and vapor can be employed and that from each of them gases can be derived at will, the constituents of which have various molecular structures. It has also been found that by employing air and an inexpensive moist oil, the same results are obtained except that the resulting gas is diluted with nitrogen Su, on the contrary, a good water-free oil is used. there is a tendency for molecular dissociation and the gases are of inferior quality for heating
