Abstract

La presente solicitud provee un aceite de canola “no sat”. La presente también provee semillas que se pueden usar para producir tales aceites. Las plantas que producen estas semillas están también incluidas dentro de la presente solicitud. Todo esto se obtuvo sorprendentemente mediante el empleo de un gen de d-9 desaturasa en canola. Esta tecnología se puede aplicar a otras plantas reveladas en la presente memoria. Los aceites de la presente solicitud tienen características particularmente ventajosas y perfiles de ácidos grasos que no se han obtenido hasta el presente. La presente solicitud también provee un gen de d-9 desaturasa para las plantas. En algunas realizaciones preferidas, una planta preferida comprende al menos dos copias de un gen de d-9 desaturasa de la presente solicitud. Las semillas producidas por tales plantas, de manera sorprendente no presentan efectos de silencio génico sino que tienen más bien sorprendentes reducciones en los niveles de ácidos grasos saturados totales.
