Definitions
- the present invention relates to a biaxially oriented polyolefin film that, when used as an industrial material film, is suitable for inspecting mating components and can be easily processed at high temperatures.
- Biaxially oriented polyolefin films especially biaxially oriented polypropylene films, have excellent surface release properties and are therefore ideally suited for use as industrial material films such as protective films, process films, and release films.
- they have been widely used as protective films for optical components such as polarizing plates, taking advantage of the low moisture absorption inherent in polyolefins.
- the film must have a low phase difference in the thickness direction to prevent interference colors and rainbow unevenness, and must also have high heat resistance to prevent dimensional changes even in high-temperature environments.
- polypropylene resin has a low melting point and glass transition temperature
- the film shrinks and deforms significantly in high-temperature environments, limiting the temperature range in which it can be used.
- the retardation is often insufficient to make it suitable for use in the above applications.
- films have been proposed that achieve a good balance between heat resistance and cost by reducing the amount of expensive cyclic olefin resin used, such as films in which cyclic olefin resin is blended with polypropylene resin (e.g., Patent Documents 1 and 2) and films in which polypropylene resin is laminated on both sides of a layer of cyclic olefin resin (e.g., Patent Document 3).
- the films of Patent Documents 1 and 2 have improved heat resistance by blending a cyclic olefin resin with a polypropylene resin, the dispersion of the domains of the cyclic olefin resin is insufficient, making it difficult to make the quality of the film uniform. Therefore, when used as an industrial material film such as a protective film, a process film, or a release film, there is a problem that the inspection suitability of the mating member to which the film is bonded is insufficient, and this problem is particularly noticeable when the mating member is an optical member such as a polarizing plate.
- the film of Patent Document 3 is a film in which a cyclic olefin resin is laminated on the inner layer and a polypropylene resin is laminated on the surface layer, and when used in a process where high tension is applied, there is a problem that defects such as peeling at the lamination interface occur. Therefore, the object of the present invention is to solve the above problems. In other words, it is to provide a biaxially oriented polyolefin film that, when used as an industrial material film, combines the inspection suitability of the mating member with processability at high temperatures.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention has the following configuration. That is, the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention is a biaxially oriented polyolefin film in which the value obtained by dividing the thickness direction retardation Rth (nm) by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) is 1.0 to 16.0, the thermal shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C is -5.0% to 6.0%, and the biaxially oriented polyolefin film contains a cyclic olefin resin.
- the present invention provides a biaxially oriented polyolefin film that is suitable for use as an industrial material film such as a protective film, a process film, or a release film, and that is suitable for inspecting mating components and for processability at high temperatures. Due to the above-mentioned properties, the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention can be suitably used as an industrial material film, particularly for optical applications.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram showing a cross section (cross section X) in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation and in the thickness direction of a biaxially oriented polyolefin film according to one embodiment of the present invention.
- this is a graph in which white parts are set to 0 and black parts are set to 1 and plotted against the length in the thickness direction along a 1 ⁇ m line segment (reference numeral 4) parallel to the thickness direction.
- 2 is a schematic diagram showing a cross section (cross section X) in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation and in the thickness direction of a biaxially oriented polyolefin film according to an embodiment of the present invention different from that shown in FIG. 1.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention is a biaxially oriented polyolefin film in which the value obtained by dividing the thickness direction retardation Rth (nm) by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) is 1.0 or more and 16.0 or less, the thermal shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C is -5.0% or more and 6.0% or less, and which contains a cyclic olefin resin.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention will be specifically described below.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film may be simply referred to as a film.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention is not a microporous film, and therefore does not have many pores.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film means a biaxially oriented polyolefin film other than a microporous film.
- a microporous film is defined as a film having a pore structure that penetrates both surfaces of the film and has an air permeability of 5,000 seconds/100 mL or less at 23°C and 65% relative humidity for 100 ml of air permeation time using a B-type Gurley tester of JIS P 8117 (1998).
- biaxial orientation means that the molecules are oriented in two perpendicular directions within the film plane, which can be achieved by stretching an unstretched sheet in two perpendicular directions within the film plane to form a film.
- a polyolefin film is a film that contains more than 50% by mass and no more than 100% by mass of polyolefin resin when all the components constituting the film are taken as 100% by mass.
- the content of polyolefin resin in a polyolefin film is preferably 70% by mass or more and no more than 100% by mass, more preferably 90% by mass or more and no more than 100% by mass, even more preferably 95% by mass or more and no more than 100% by mass, particularly preferably 96% by mass or more and no more than 100% by mass, and most preferably 97% by mass or more and no more than 100% by mass.
- a film contains multiple components that qualify as polyolefin resin, it is considered to qualify as a polyolefin film if the total content of the components is more than 50% by mass and no more than 100% by mass.
- Polyolefin resin refers to a resin that contains more than 50 mol% and not more than 100 mol% of olefin units when all the constituent units constituting the resin are taken as 100 mol%.
- Polypropylene resin refers to a resin that contains more than 50 mol% and not more than 100 mol% of propylene units when all the constituent units constituting the resin are taken as 100 mol%, and does not meet the definition of cyclic olefin resin below.
- Cyclic olefin resin refers to a polyolefin resin that contains 10 mol% to 100 mol% of cyclic olefin units when all the constituent units constituting the resin are taken as 100 mol%. Note that for resins that contain multiple types of constituent units equivalent to cyclic olefin units, even if each cyclic olefin unit is less than 10 mol%, as long as the total of these constituent units exceeds 10 mol%, it is considered to be a cyclic olefin resin.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention contains a cyclic olefin resin from the viewpoint of achieving both suppression of interference colors and rainbow unevenness and improved heat resistance.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film obtained has excellent optical properties and heat resistance due to the low birefringence and high heat resistance of the cyclic olefin resin.
- the cyclic olefin structure of the side chain of the cyclic olefin resin is a perpendicular polarizability ellipsoid relative to the polymer main chain, and due to this structure, the polarizability anisotropy is low, resulting in a low birefringence.
- the content of the cyclic olefin resin in the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention is preferably 2.0% by mass or more, more preferably 5.0% by mass or more, even more preferably 7.5% by mass or more, and particularly preferably 9.0% by mass or more, when the total resin components of the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is taken as 100% by mass.
- the content of the cyclic olefin resin is preferably less than 50% by mass, more preferably 40% by mass or less, even more preferably 30% by mass or less, particularly preferably 20% by mass or less, and most preferably 15% by mass or less.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention has a thickness direction retardation Rth (nm) divided by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) of 1.0 to 16.0.
- the mating member here refers to a member that is bonded to the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention when the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention is used as an industrial material film such as a protective film, a process film, or a release film.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is used as a polarizing plate protective film
- the polarizing plate is the mating member.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film When the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is used as an industrial material film, it is required to be able to inspect the necessary characteristics with as little error as possible even when the biaxially oriented polyolefin film and the mating member are bonded together.
- the mating member is a member used for optical applications (hereinafter sometimes referred to as an optical member), it is difficult to realize the characteristic because the inspection item requires precision such as optical characteristics (e.g., retardation characteristics, etc.).
- the thickness direction refers to the direction perpendicular to the film surface, and the retardation Rth in the thickness direction can be calculated from the refractive index for light with a wavelength of 590 nm measured using a known Abbe refractometer (details of the measurement method are described later).
- the value obtained by dividing the retardation Rth (nm) in the thickness direction of the biaxially oriented polyolefin film by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) is 16.0 or less, it is possible to inspect the retardation characteristics of the polarizing plate, for example, even if the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is attached as a protective film during the inspection process immediately before the shipment of the polarizing plate, which is advantageous in terms of cost and maintaining quality.
- the thickness direction retardation Rth is a parameter that increases in proportion to the film thickness, and can usually be reduced by making the film thinner. However, when the film is made thinner, the stiffness decreases and handling deteriorates, and flatness is easily deteriorated when used in a high temperature environment. Therefore, in the present invention, it is important to reduce the retardation while maintaining a certain level of film thickness. That is, in the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention, in order to eliminate the effect of the film thickness on the thickness direction retardation Rth, it is important to reduce the value obtained by dividing the thickness direction retardation Rth by the film thickness.
- the upper limit of the value obtained by dividing the Rth (nm) of the biaxially oriented polyolefin film by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) is preferably 15.0, more preferably 14.0, even more preferably 12.0, and particularly preferably 11.0. From the above viewpoint, the lower the value obtained by dividing the Rth (nm) of the biaxially oriented polyolefin film by the film thickness ( ⁇ m), the better, but considering feasibility, the lower limit is essentially 1.0.
- One method for controlling the value obtained by dividing Rth (nm) by the film thickness ( ⁇ m) within the above range is, for example, to produce a film containing a polypropylene resin and a cyclic olefin resin with low birefringence.
- cyclic olefin resins have a polarizability ellipsoid in which the cyclic olefin structure of the side chain is perpendicular to the polymer main chain. Due to this structure, cyclic olefin resins have low polarizability anisotropy and low birefringence, so the higher the content of cyclic olefin resin in the film, the lower the value obtained by dividing Rth by the film.
- melt extruding the film when melt extruding the film, it is also effective to gradually lower the melting temperature in the extruder, the short tube temperature from the filter to the die, and the die lip temperature to elongate and elongate the domains in the extrusion direction and reduce the thickness of the domains.
- it is also effective to widen the stretching section of the longitudinal stretching, heat both sides of the film during stretching with a radiation heater, and neck down the film while stretching to elongate and elongate the domains in the stretching direction and reduce the thickness of the domains. It is not necessary to use only one of these methods, but they can be used in appropriate combination (this also applies to the means of achieving each characteristic in the present invention below).
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention has a heat shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction of -5.0% or more and 6.0% or less at 150°C, from the viewpoint of improving suitability for processing in high-temperature environments.
- a heat shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction of -5.0% or more and 6.0% or less at 150°C, from the viewpoint of improving suitability for processing in high-temperature environments.
- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is used as a protective film or a processing film, not limited to the above-mentioned polarizing plate protection application, it may be exposed to high-temperature environments, or even high-temperature and high-tension environments. Therefore, the biaxially oriented polyolefin film is required to maintain its performance even in these environments.
- the heat shrinkage rate of the biaxially oriented polyolefin film in the main orientation direction is preferably 4.0%, more preferably 3.0%, even more preferably 2.0%, and most preferably 1.0%.
- a heat shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C of less than 0% indicates that the biaxially oriented polyolefin film expands in the main orientation direction due to heating. If the heat shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C is less than -5.0%, the flatness of the roll may deteriorate when the film is stored after being wound into a roll. From the above viewpoints, the lower limit of the heat shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C is preferably -4.0%, more preferably -3.0%, and even more preferably -2.0%.
- the thermal shrinkage rate in the main orientation direction at 150°C within the above range, it is effective to, for example, set the glass transition temperature of the cyclic olefin resin to the preferred range described below, use a polypropylene resin with high crystallinity and a high mesopentad fraction, adjust the preheating temperature and stretching temperature during transverse stretching to the range described below, and make the preheating temperature higher than the stretching temperature to stabilize molecular chains that are insufficiently oriented after longitudinal stretching.
- the main orientation direction here refers to the direction that shows the highest value when Young's modulus is measured in each direction that forms an angle of 0° to 175° in 5° increments with respect to an arbitrary direction in the plane of the film, with the arbitrary direction being set as 0°, and the direction perpendicular to the main orientation refers to the direction perpendicular to the main orientation direction in the plane of the film.
- the Young's modulus here refers to the Young's modulus calculated in accordance with the method specified in JIS K7161 (2014) by setting a rectangular sample with a length of 150 mm (measurement direction) and a width of 10 mm with an initial chuck distance of 50 mm, and conducting a tensile test at room temperature at a tensile speed of 300 mm/min. The method for measuring Young's modulus will be described in detail later.

- the stretching directions is usually the main orientation direction, and the other is the direction perpendicular to the main orientation.
- the heat shrinkage in the main orientation direction at 150°C can be measured by the following method and procedure.
- both sides of the obtained sample are sandwiched between 0.09 mm thick paper and heated in a 150°C environment for 15 minutes. After heating is completed, the rate of change in the dimension of the film in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation before and after heating is measured, and this is taken as the heat shrinkage in each direction.

- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention preferably has a tan ⁇ of 0.01 or more and 0.23 or less at 150°C in the main orientation direction and the direction perpendicular to the main orientation.
- Tan ⁇ is also called loss tangent and is correlated with the degree of mobility of molecular chains in the film, and the lower the tan ⁇ , the lower the molecular mobility and the more thermally stable the film is.
- the lower the tan ⁇ at 150°C, the more preferable, and the upper limit is more preferably 0.20, even more preferably 0.18, and most preferably 0.16.
- the lower the tan ⁇ at 150°C, the more preferable, but the lower limit is substantially 0.01. Tan ⁇ can be measured by a dynamic viscoelasticity method, the details of which will be described later.
- tan ⁇ at 150°C within the above range in the main orientation direction and the direction perpendicular to the main orientation, it is effective to, for example, set the glass transition temperature of the cyclic olefin resin to the preferred range described below, use a polypropylene resin with high crystallinity (high mesopentad fraction), widen the stretching section of the longitudinal stretching and heat both sides of the film with a radiation heater while stretching, thereby uniformly orienting the molecular chains in the film by necking down, and adjust the preheating temperature and stretching temperature during transverse stretching to the range described below, making the preheating temperature higher than the stretching temperature, thereby stabilizing the molecular chains that are insufficiently oriented after longitudinal stretching.

- the biaxially oriented polyolefin film of the present invention preferably has a refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation of 1.498 or more and 1.550 or less from the viewpoint of improving mechanical strength and visibility.
- the refractive index correlates with the degree of orientation of the molecular chains in the film, and the higher the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation, the greater the orientation of the molecular chains in the same direction, and the higher the mechanical strength in the same direction. From the above viewpoint, it is preferable that the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation is high, and the lower limit is more preferably 1.505, even more preferably 1.510, particularly preferably 1.512, and most preferably 1.515.
- the refractive index referred to here is the refractive index measured using sodium D line (wavelength 589 nm) as a light source, and the detailed measurement method will be described later.

- the dynamic friction coefficient ⁇ d in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation is preferably low, but in practice, 0.10 is the lower limit.
- the dynamic friction coefficient ⁇ d in the direction perpendicular to the main orientation can be measured in accordance with JIS K 7125 (1999) by aligning the directions perpendicular to the main orientation and stacking the films so that different surfaces are in contact with each other.
