Abstract
본 발명은 다공성 기재; 상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 탄소 코팅층; 및 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 위치하는 리튬 금속층;을 포함하고, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 메탈 전지에 관한 것이다.
Description
본 발명은 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 메탈 전지에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은 2021년 5월 3일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2021-0057409호 및 2022년 4월 29일자 한국 특허 출원 제10-2022-0053302호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용을 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함한다.
에너지 저장 기술에 대한 관심이 갈수록 높아짐에 따라, 휴대폰, 태블릿(tablet), 랩탑(laptop) 및 캠코더, 나아가서는 전기 자동차(EV) 및 하이브리드 전기 자동차(HEV)의 에너지까지 적용분야가 확대되면서, 전기화학소자에 대한 연구 및 개발이 점차 증대되고 있다. 전기화학소자는 이러한 측면에서 가장 주목을 받고 있는 분야이고, 그 중에서도 충전 및 방전이 가능한 리튬-황 전지 등의 이차전지, 더 나아가서는 리튬 메탈 전지의 개발은 관심의 초점이 되고 있으며, 최근에는 이러한 전지를 개발함에 있어서 용량 밀도 및 비 에너지를 향상시키기 위하여, 새로운 전극과 전지의 설계에 대한 연구개발로 이어지고 있다.
리튬 메탈 전지의 음극에 사용되는 리튬은 밀도가 낮은 점에서 전지의 에너지 밀도 향상에 장점을 지니고 있으나, 상대적으로 기계적 강도가 낮으며 연성이 큰 특성으로 인하여 쉽게 치수 변화를 일으킨다는 점에서 제조 공정상 단점이 지적되어 왔다. 또한 이러한 리튬을 지지하기 위한 집전체로 통상적으로 구리박이 사용되었으나, 낮은 두께에도 불구하고 리튬 대비 밀도가 약 16.8배 높다는 점에서 중량당 에너지 밀도 손실이 크다는 문제점이 제기되어 왔다.
이러한 상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 기계적 강도 및 음극 제조 공정상의 문제점을 보완하기 위하여, 다양한 구조의 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극에 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 다만, 새로운 기재를 도입하여, 기계적 강도를 보완하더라도 전지의 에너지 밀도 손실을 최소화하기 어려우며 전지 구동이 안정적이지 못한 점에서 음극의 구조를 개선하는데 한계가 있었다.

본 발명의 목적은, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극에 있어서 리튬 금속층 뿐만 아니라 다공성 기재 및 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층을 포함함으로써, 리튬의 기계적 물성을 보완하면서도 전지의 에너지 밀도 손실을 최소화하기 위하여 경량이며, 전지의 구동 안정성 및 제조 공정성을 높일 수 있는 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 메탈 전지를 제공하는 것이다.
본 발명의 제 1 측면에 따르면,
다공성 기재; 상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 탄소 코팅층; 및 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 위치하는 리튬 금속층;을 포함하고, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제공한다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리아미드, 폴리아세탈, 폴리카보네이트, 폴리에테르에테르케톤, 폴리에테르설폰, 폴리페닐렌옥사이드, 폴리페닐렌설파이드, 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드, 폴리염화비닐, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 셀룰로오스, 나일론, 폴리파라페닐렌벤조비스옥사졸, 폴리아릴레이트 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 것을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재의 기공도는 40% 내지 90%일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재의 두께는 0.5μm 내지 30μm일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 그래핀 또는 그래핀 유도체를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재의 단위면적당 코팅된 탄소 입자의 중량은 0.1 g/m2 내지 5 g/m2일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재의 일면에 탄소 코팅층이 형성되고, 상기 다공성 기재와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층의 일면에 리튬 금속층이 적층된 구조일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 다공성 기재가 중앙에 위치하고, 상기 다공성 기재의 양면에 각각 탄소 코팅층이 형성되고, 상기 다공성 기재와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층의 일면 각각에 리튬 금속층이 적층된 다층구조일 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 구체예에 있어서, 상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 인장강도는 1 MPa 내지 300 MPa일 수 있다.
본 발명의 제 2 측면에 따르면, 상기 음극을 포함하는 리튬 메탈 전지를 제공한다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은 리튬의 낮은 기계적 물성을 보완할 수 있는 경량의 다공성 기재를 구조상 포함하여 전지의 제조 공정성을 개선시킬 수 있으며, 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층을 포함하여 리튬과 지지체의 친화성 향상에 따른 리튬의 플레이팅(plating)시 안정적 구조의 형성으로 리튬의 효율을 개선시키는 효과를 가진다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 음극을 포함하는 리튬 메탈 전지는 다공성 기재로 인한 음극의 전해액 보유량이 증가함으로써 전지의 수명 특성이 개선되는 효과가 있다.

본 발명에 따라 제공되는 구체예는 하기의 설명에 의하여 모두 달성될 수 있다. 하기의 설명은 본 발명의 바람직한 구체예를 기술하는 것으로 이해되어야 하며, 본 발명이 반드시 이에 한정되는 것은 아님을 이해해야 한다.
리튬 메탈 전지용 음극
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 다공성 기재; 상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 탄소 코팅층; 및 상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 위치하는 리튬 금속층;을 포함하고, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함한다.
본 명세서에서 리튬 메탈 전지는 음극으로 리튬 금속을 사용하는 전지로 정의될 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 다공성 기재를 포함한다.
상기 다공성 기재는 리튬화(Lithiation)를 일으키지 않는 다공성의 고분자 기재일 수 있다. 리튬에 대한 지지체 역할을 하는 다공성 기재가 리튬화를 일으키는 경우 음극의 인장강도(Tensile strength) 및 연신율(Elongation)이 현저히 저하되기 때문에, 다공성 기재는 리튬화를 일으키지 않는 기재를 사용하는 것이 바람직하다.
예를 들어, 상기 다공성 기재는 폴리에틸렌(polyethylene), 폴리프로필렌(polypropylene) 등의 폴리올레핀(polyolefin), 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트(polybutyleneterephthalate) 등의 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아미드(polyamide), 폴리아세탈(polyacetal), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate), 폴리에테르에테르케톤(polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰(polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드(polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드(polyphenylenesulfide), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalate), 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(polytetrafluoroethylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(polyvinylidene fluoride), 폴리염화비닐(polyvinyl chloride), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile), 셀룰로오스(cellulose), 나일론(nylon), 폴리파라페닐렌벤조비스옥사졸(poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole), 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate) 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 것을 포함하고, 바람직하게는 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트일 수 있으나, 이에 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다. 다만, 리튬화(Lithiation)를 일으킬 수 있는 고분자인 폴리이미드(polyimide)는 상기 다공성 기재로 사용되기에 바람직하지 않을 수 있다.
상기 다공성 기재의 기공도는 40% 이상, 45% 이상, 50% 이상일 수 있고, 90% 이하, 85% 이하, 80% 이하, 75% 이하, 70% 이하, 65% 이하, 60% 이하일 수 있다. 상기 기공도는 다공성 기재에서 기공의 부피 비율을 의미하며, 상기 공극률은 예를 들어 BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) 측정법 또는 수은 침투법(Hg porosimeter)에 의해 측정될 수 있지만, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 또 다른 예로서, 상기 공극률은 크기, 두께 및 밀도 등의 다른 파라미터를 이용하여 계산될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 소재의 두께 측정 장비(TESA, u-hite)를 통해 과립층의 두께를 측정한 후, 소재의 진밀도 측정 장비(Microtrac, BELPycno)를 통해 측정된 과립층의 진밀도를 이용하여 계산할 수 있다. 상기 기공도가 40% 미만인 경우는 리튬의 이동경로가 제한되어 충전 및 방전시 저항이 크게 증가할 수 있다. 반면, 상기 기공도가 90%를 초과하는 경우에는 음극의 물성이 향상되지 않는 점에서 조립 공정성을 개선하기 어려운 문제점이 있다.
상기 다공성 기재의 두께는 0.5μm 이상, 1μm 이상, 2μm 이상, 3μm 이상, 4μm 이상, 5μm 이상, 6μm 이상, 7μm 이상, 8μm 이상, 9μm 이상, 10μm 이상 일 수 있고, 30μm 이하, 29μm 이하, 28μm 이하, 27μm 이하, 26μm 이하, 25μm 이하, 24μm 이하, 23μm 이하, 22μm 이하, 21μm 이하, 20μm 이하일 수 있다. 상기 두께가 0.5μm 미만인 경우는, 다공성 기재의 두께가 지나치게 얇아 음극의 지지체로서 인장강도 등의 기계적 물성이 떨어질 수 있다. 반면, 상기 두께가 30μm를 초과하는 경우, 리튬의 이동경로 길이가 증가하여 충전 및 방전시의 저항이 크게 증가할 수 있고, 무게 및 부피당 에너지 밀도가 낮아지는 문제점이 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 탄소 코팅층을 포함하고, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함한다.
상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 상기 탄소 코팅층은 전도성의 탄소 입자를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 탄소 코팅층에 포함된 전도성을 띠는 탄소 입자로 인하여, 음극의 지지체 역할을 하는 다공성 기재와 리튬 금속 간의 친화성이 향상됨으로써 리튬의 플레이팅(plating)시 안정적 구조 형성이 가능하여 리튬의 효율 개선 및 리튬 음극의 제조 공정성이 향상될 수 있다.
상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함할 수 있고, 예를 들어, 상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 그래핀 또는 그래핀 유도체를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 탄소 코팅층은 바람직하게는 그래핀, 환원 그래핀 옥사이드(Reduced Graphene Oxide, RGO), 산화 그래핀(Graphene Oxide, GO) 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 것을 포함할 수 있고, 더 바람직하게는 그래핀일 수 있다. 상기 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 탄소 코팅층에 포함하는 경우, 다공성 기재 표면 상에 기공이 줄어들 수 있으며 양극과의 상대적 거리에 영향받지 않고 리튬의 플레이팅을 제어할 수 있는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
상기 다공성 기재의 단위면적당 코팅된 탄소 입자의 중량은 0.1 g/m2 이상, 0.2 g/m2 이상, 0.3 g/m2 이상, 0.4 g/m2 이상, 0.5 g/m2 이상, 0.6 g/m2 이상일 수 있고, 5.0 g/m2 이하, 4.5 g/m2 이하, 4.0 g/m2 이하, 3.5 g/m2 이하, 3.0 g/m2 이하, 2.5 g/m2 이하, 2.0 g/m2 이하, 1.5 g/m2 이하, 1.4 g/m2 이하, 1.3 g/m2 이하, 1.2 g/m2 이하, 1.1 g/m2 이하, 1.0 g/m2 이하일 수 있다. 상기 탄소 입자의 중량이 0.1 g/m2 미만인 경우, 탄소 코팅층이 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함함에 따른 전지 방전용량 등의 성능 개선효과가 떨어질 수 있다. 반면 상기 탄소 입자의 중량이 5.0 g/m2를 초과하는 경우, 리튬 이온의 이동을 막아 셀 저항이 증가함에 따라 전지 성능이 저하될 수 있으며, 무게 및 부피당 에너지 밀도 또한 필요 이상으로 낮아지는 문제점이 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 리튬 금속층을 포함한다.
리튬 금속층은 리튬 금속 원소를 포함하는 금속층을 의미한다. 상기 리튬 금속층의 재질은 리튬합금, 리튬금속, 리튬합금의 산화물 또는 리튬산화물일 수 있다. 비제한적인 예로, 음극은 리튬 금속의 박막일 수도 있으며, 리튬과 Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Al 및 Sn 군으로부터 선택되는 1종 이상의 금속과의 합금일 수 있다. 이때, 상기 리튬 금속층은 표면 산화막 또는 일부가 산소나 수분에 의해 변질되거나 불순물을 포함할 수도 있다.
상기 리튬 금속층은 다공성 기재 상에 형성된 탄소 코팅층 상에 적층된 후 압연공정을 거침으로써 다공성 기재 및 탄소 코팅층 구조와 밀착될 수 있다. 상기 압연으로 인하여 리튬의 일부 또는 전체가 다공성 기재에 침투하여 다공성 기재의 기공 내부에 위치할 수 있다. 또한 압연시 리튬이 롤(roll)에 직접적으로 닿는 면에는 리튬과의 밀착 특성이 없는 이형 필름을 사용하여 압연 공정을 실시할 수 있다. 추가적으로, 지지체인 다공성 기재와 리튬 금속층의 계면을 안정화시키기 위하여, 산소와 수분을 차단하고 파우치로 밀봉한 상태에서 수시간 내지 수일을 보관하는 에이징(Aging)처리 과정을 실시할 수 있다.
상기 리튬 금속층의 두께는 0.1μm 이상, 0.5μm 이상, 1.0μm 이상, 3μm 이상, 5μm 이상, 7μm 이상, 10μm 이상, 13μm 이상, 15μm 이상, 20μm 이상, 25μm 이상, 30μm 이상, 35μm 이상, 40μm 이상, 45μm 이상, 50μm 이상, 55μm 이상일 수 있고, 100 μm 이하, 95 μm 이하, 90 μm 이하, 85 μm 이하, 80 μm 이하, 75 μm 이하, 70 μm 이하, 65 μm 이하일 수 있다. 상기 두께가 0.1 μm 미만인 경우, 리튬의 효율 부족으로 인하여 전지의 성능을 발휘하기 어려우며, 상기 두께가 100 μm를 초과하는 경우 리튬 두께 증가로 에너지 밀도가 감소하는 문제점이 발생할 수 있다.
상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 상기 다공성 기재를 준비한 후 다공성 기재의 표면 상에 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 분산액을 코팅 후 진공 건조시켜 탄소 코팅층을 형성한 후, 그 위에 리튬 금속 호일을 적층시킨 후 압연시켜 제조할 수 있다. 상기 코팅방법은 바람직하게는 딥 코팅법(dip coating)일 수 있으나, 이에 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다. 또한 상기 압연 방법은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 당업계에서 통상적으로 사용되는 방법이 사용될 수 있다.
도 1을 참고하면 상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 상기 다공성 기재(100)의 일면에 탄소 코팅층(200)이 형성되고, 상기 다공성 기재(100)와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층(200)의 일면에 리튬 금속층(300)이 적층된 구조일 수 있다. 상기 탄소코팅층 일면에 리튬금속층이 적층된 구조의 음극의 경우에는, 바람직하게는 모노셀이나 코인셀에서 활용될 수 있다.
도 2를 참고하면 상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극은, 상기 다공성 기재(100)가 중앙에 위치하고, 상기 다공성 기재의 양면에 각각 탄소 코팅층이 형성되고, 상기 다공성 기재와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층의 일면 각각에 리튬 금속층이 적층된 다층구조일 수 있다. 상기 다층구조의 음극의 경우에는, 적층(stacking)구조를 이루는 다양한 형태의 셀에서 활용될 수 있다.
상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 인장강도는 1 MPa 이상, 2 MPa 이상, 3 MPa 이상, 4 MPa 이상, 5 MPa 이상, 6 MPa 이상, 7 MPa 이상, 8 MPa 이상, 9 MPa 이상, 10 MPa 이상, 11 MPa 이상, 12 MPa 이상, 13 MPa 이상, 14 MPa 이상, 15 MPa 이상, 16 MPa 이상, 17 MPa 이상, 17.5 MPa 이상, 18 MPa 이상일 수 있고, 300MPa 이하, 280MPa 이하, 260MPa 이하, 240MPa 이하, 220MPa 이하, 200MPa 이하, 180MPa 이하, 160MPa 이하, 140MPa 이하, 120MPa 이하, 100MPa 이하, 80MPa 이하, 60MPa 이하, 40MPa 이하, 35MPa 이하, 30 MPa 이하, 29 MPa 이하, 28 MPa 이하, 27 MPa 이하, 26 MPa 이하, 25 MPa 이하, 24 MPa 이하, 23 MPa 이하, 22 MPa 이하, 21 MPa 이하, 20 MPa 이하일 수 있다. 상기 인장강도의 범위에 해당하는 경우, 다공성 기재의 도입으로 리튬 금속의 기계적 강도가 보완되어 지지체가 강화된 리튬 복합 음극을 제조할 수 있다.
리튬 메탈 전지
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지는 상기 음극을 포함한다.
구체적으로, 상기 리튬 메탈 전지는 양극; 음극; 분리막; 및 전해액;을 포함하며, 상기 음극으로 본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 포함한다.
상기 음극은 본 명세서에서 전술한 바에 따른다.
상기 양극은 양극 집전체와 상기 양극 집전체의 일면 또는 양면에 도포된 양극 활물질층을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극 집전체는 양극 활물질을 지지하며, 당해 전지에 화학적 변화를 유발하지 않으면서 높은 도전성을 가지는 것이라면 특별히 제한되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 구리, 스테인리스 스틸, 알루미늄, 니켈, 티타늄, 팔라듐, 소성 탄소, 구리나 스테인리스 스틸 표면에 카본, 니켈, 은 등으로 표면 처리한 것, 알루미늄-카드뮴 합금 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 양극 집전체는 그것의 표면에 미세한 요철을 형성하여 양극 활물질과의 결합력을 강화시킬 수 있으며, 필름, 시트, 호일, 메쉬, 네트, 다공질체, 발포체, 부직포체 등 다양한 형태를 사용할 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질층은 양극 활물질, 바인더 및 도전재를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극 활물질은 리튬 코발트 산화물(LiCoO2), 리튬 니켈 산화물(LiNiO2) 등의 층상 화합물이나 1 또는 그 이상의 전이금속으로 치환된 화합물; 화학식 Li1+xMn2-xO4 (여기서, x 는 0 ~ 0.33 임), LiMnO3, LiMn2O3, LiMnO2 등의 리튬 망간 산화물; 리튬 구리 산화물(Li2CuO2); LiV3O8, LiFe3O4, V2O5, Cu2V2O7 등의 바나듐 산화물; 화학식 LiNi1-xMxO2(여기서, M = Co, Mn, Al, Cu, Fe, Mg, B 또는 Ga 이고, x = 0.01 ~ 0.3 임)으로 표현되는 Ni 사이트형 리튬 니켈 산화물; 화학식 LiMn2-xMxO2 (여기서, M = Co, Ni, Fe, Cr, Zn 또는 Ta 이고, x = 0.01 ~ 0.1 임) 또는 Li2Mn3MO8 (여기서, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu 또는 Zn 임)으로 표현되는 리튬 망간 복합 산화물; LiNixMn2-xO4로 표현되는 스피넬 구조의 리튬 망간 복합 산화물; 화학식의 Li 일부가 알칼리토금속 이온으로 치환된 LiMn2O4; 디설파이드 화합물; Fe2(MoO4)3 등을 들 수 있지만, 이들만으로 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 양극 활물질은 황을 포함할 수 있다. 황의 경우 단독으로는 전기 전도성이 없기 때문에 탄소재와 같은 전도성 소재와 복합화하여 사용된다. 상기 양극 활물질이 황을 포함하는 경우, 황은 황-탄소 복합체 형태로 포함될 수 있다. 상기 황-탄소 복합체에 포함되는 탄소는 다공성 탄소재로 상기 황이 균일하고 안정적으로 고정될 수 있는 골격을 제공하며, 황의 낮은 전기 전도도를 보완하여 전기화학적 반응이 원활하게 진행될 수 있도록 한다.
상기 다공성 탄소재는 일반적으로 다양한 탄소 재질의 전구체를 탄화시킴으로써 제조될 수 있다. 상기 다공성 탄소재는 내부에 일정하지 않은 기공을 포함하며, 상기 기공의 평균 직경은 1 내지 200 ㎚ 범위이며, 기공도 또는 공극률은 다공성 탄소재 전체 체적의 10 내지 90 % 범위일 수 있다. 만일 상기 기공의 평균 직경이 상기 범위 미만인 경우 기공 크기가 분자 수준에 불과하여 황의 함침이 불가능하며, 이와 반대로 상기 범위를 초과하는 경우 다공성 탄소재의 기계적 강도가 약화되어 전극의 제조공정에 적용하기에 바람직하지 않다.
상기 다공성 탄소재의 형태는 구형, 봉형, 침상형, 판상형, 튜브형 또는 벌크형으로 통상적으로 사용되는 것이라면 제한없이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 탄소재는 다공성 구조이거나 비표면적이 높은 것으로 당업계에서 통상적으로 사용되는 것이라면 어느 것이든 무방하다. 예를 들어, 상기 다공성 탄소재로는 그래파이트(graphite); 그래핀(graphene); 덴카 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙 등의 카본 블랙; 단일벽 탄소 나노튜브(SWCNT), 다중벽 탄소 나노튜브(MWCNT) 등의 탄소 나노튜브(CNT); 그라파이트 나노파이버(GNF), 카본 나노파이버(CNF), 활성화 탄소 파이버(ACF) 등의 탄소 섬유; 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연, 팽창 흑연 등의 흑연 및 활성탄소로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있고, 바람직하게는 탄소나노튜브(CNT)일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되지 않는다.
상기 도전재는 전해액과 양극 활물질을 전기적으로 연결시켜 주어 집전체(current collector)로부터 전자가 양극 활물질까지 이동하는 경로의 역할을 하는 물질로서, 도전성을 갖는 것이라면 제한없이 사용할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 상기 도전재로는 천연 흑연, 인조 흑연 등의 흑연; 슈퍼 P(Super-P), 덴카 블랙, 아세틸렌 블랙, 케첸 블랙, 채널 블랙, 퍼네이스 블랙, 램프 블랙, 서머 블랙 등의 카본 블랙; 탄소 나노튜브, 플러렌 등의 탄소 유도체; 탄소 섬유, 금속 섬유 등의 도전성 섬유; 불화 카본; 알루미늄, 니켈 분말 등의 금속 분말 또는 폴리아닐린, 폴리티오펜, 폴리아세틸렌, 폴리피롤 등의 전도성 고분자를 단독 또는 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 바인더는 양극 활물질을 양극 집전체에 유지시키고, 양극 활물질 사이를 유기적으로 연결시켜 이들 간의 결착력을 보다 높이는 것으로, 당해 업계에서 공지된 모든 바인더를 사용할 수 있다.
예를 들어 상기 바인더는 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(polyvinylidene fluoride, PVdF) 또는 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE)을 포함하는 불소 수지계 바인더; 스티렌-부타디엔 고무(styrene butadiene rubber, SBR), 아크릴로니트릴-부티디엔 고무, 스티렌-이소프렌 고무를 포함하는 고무계 바인더; 카르복시메틸셀룰로우즈(carboxyl methyl cellulose, CMC), 전분, 히드록시 프로필셀룰로우즈, 재생 셀룰로오스를 포함하는 셀룰로오스계 바인더; 폴리 알코올계 바인더; 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌를 포함하는 폴리 올레핀계 바인더; 폴리 이미드계 바인더; 폴리 에스테르계 바인더; 및 실란계 바인더;로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종, 2종 이상의 혼합물 또는 공중합체를 사용할 수 있다.
상기 양극의 제조방법은 본 발명에서 특별히 한정하지 않으며 당 업계에서 통상적으로 사용되는 방법이 사용될 수 있다. 일례로, 상기 양극은 양극 슬러리 조성물을 제조한 후, 이를 상기 양극 집전체의 적어도 일면에 도포함으로써 제조된 것일 수 있다.
상기 양극 슬러리 조성물은 전술한 바의 양극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더를 포함하며, 이외 용매를 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 용매로는 양극 활물질, 도전재 및 바인더를 균일하게 분산시킬 수 있는 것을 사용한다. 이러한 용매로는 수계 용매로서 물이 가장 바람직하며, 이때 물은 증류수(distilled water), 탈이온수(deionzied water)일 수 있다. 다만 반드시 이에 한정하는 것은 아니며, 필요한 경우 물과 쉽게 혼합이 가능한 저급 알코올이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 저급 알코올로는 메탄올, 에탄올, 프로판올, 이소프로판올 및 부탄올 등이 있으며, 바람직하기로 이들은 물과 함께 혼합하여 사용될 수 있다.
상기 전해액은 전지의 전기화학적 반응에 관여하는 이온들이 이동할 수 있는 매질 역할을 하는 비수성 용매라면, 특별히 한정되지 않는다. 예를 들어, 상기 용매는 카보네이트계, 에스테르계, 에테르계, 케톤계, 알코올계 또는 비양자성 용매를 사용할 수 있다. 상기 카보네이트계 용매로는 구체적으로 디메틸카보네이트(DMC), 디에틸카보네이트(DEC), 디프로필카보네이트(DPC), 메틸프로필카보네이트(MPC), 에틸프로필카보네이트(EPC), 메틸에틸카보네이트(MEC), 에틸렌카보네이트(EC), 프로필렌카보네이트(PC), 또는 부틸렌 카보네이트(BC) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 에스테르계 용매로는 구체적으로 메틸 아세테이트, 에틸 아세테이트, n-프로필 아세테이트, 1,1-디메틸에틸 아세테이트, 메틸프로피오네이트, 에틸프로피오네이트, γ-부티로락톤, 데카놀라이드(decanolide), 발레로락톤, 메발로노락톤(mevalonolactone), 카프로락톤(carprolactone) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 에테르계 용매로는 구체적으로 디에틸 에테르, 디프로필 에테르, 디부틸 에테르, 디메톡시메탄, 트리메톡시메탄, 디메톡시에탄, 디에톡시에탄, 디글라임, 트리글라임, 테트라글라임, 테트라하이드로퓨란, 2-메틸테트라하이드로퓨란, 또는 폴리에틸렌 글리콜 디메틸 에테르 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 케톤계 용매로는 구체적으로 시클로헥사논 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 알코올계 용매로는 구체적으로 에틸알코올, 이소프로필알코올 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 비양자성 용매로는 구체적으로 아세토니트릴 등의 니트릴류, 디메틸포름아미드 등의 아미드류, 1,3-디옥솔란(DOL) 등의 디옥솔란류, 또는 술포란(sulfolane) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 비수성 유기 용매는 단독으로 또는 하나 이상 혼합하여 사용될 수 있고, 하나 이상 혼합하여 사용되는 경우의 혼합 비율은 목적하는 전지 성능에 따라 적절하게 조절할 수 있다.
상기 전해액의 주입은 최종 제품의 제조 공정 및 요구 물성에 따라, 리튬 메탈 전지의 제조 공정 중 적절한 단계에서 행해질 수 있다. 즉, 리튬 메탈 전지의 조립 전 또는 조립 최종 단계 등에서 적용될 수 있다.
상기 양극과 음극 사이는 통상적인 분리막이 개재될 수 있다. 상기 분리막은 전극을 물리적으로 분리하는 기능을 갖는 물리적인 분리막으로서, 통상의 분리막으로 사용되는 것이라면 특별한 제한 없이 사용 가능하며, 특히 전해액의 이온 이동에 대하여 저저항이면서 전해액 함습 능력이 우수한 것이 바람직하다.
또한 상기 분리막은 상기 양극과 음극을 서로 분리 또는 절연시키고, 양극과 음극 사이에 리튬 이온 수송을 가능하게 하는 것으로 다공성 비전도성 또는 절연성 물질로 이루어질 수 있다. 상기 분리막은 통상 리튬 메탈 전지에서 분리막으로 사용되는 것이라면 특별한 제한없이 사용 가능하다. 상기 분리막은 필름과 같은 독립적인 부재일 수도 있고, 양극 및/또는 음극에 부가된 코팅층일 수도 있다.
상기 분리막은 다공성 기재로 이루어질 수 있는데 상기 다공성 기재는 통상적으로 리튬 메탈 전지에 사용되는 다공성 기재라면 모두 사용이 가능하고, 다공성 고분자 필름을 단독으로 또는 이들을 적층하여 사용할 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 고융점의 유리 섬유, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트 섬유 등으로 된 부직포 또는 폴리올레핀계 다공성 막을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 다공성 기재의 재질로는 본 발명에서 특별히 한정하지 않고, 통상적으로 리튬 메탈 전지에 사용되는 다공성 기재라면 모두 사용이 가능하다. 예를 들어, 상기 다공성 기재는 폴리에틸렌(polyethylene), 폴리프로필렌(polypropylene) 등의 폴리올레핀(polyolefin), 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(polyethyleneterephthalate), 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트(polybutyleneterephthalate) 등의 폴리에스테르(polyester), 폴리아미드(polyamide), 폴리아세탈(polyacetal), 폴리카보네이트(polycarbonate), 폴리이미드(polyimide), 폴리에테르에테르케톤(polyetheretherketone), 폴리에테르설폰(polyethersulfone), 폴리페닐렌옥사이드(polyphenyleneoxide), 폴리페닐렌설파이드(polyphenylenesulfide), 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌(polyethylenenaphthalate), 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌(polytetrafluoroethylene), 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드(polyvinylidene fluoride), 폴리염화비닐(polyvinyl chloride), 폴리아크릴로니트릴(polyacrylonitrile), 셀룰로오스(cellulose), 나일론(nylon), 폴리파라페닐렌벤조비스옥사졸(poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) 및 폴리아릴레이트(polyarylate)로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 1종 이상의 재질을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 다공성 기재의 두께는 특별히 제한되지 않으나, 1 내지 100μm, 바람직하게는 5 내지 50μm 일 수 있다. 상기 다공성 기재의 두께 범위가 전술한 범위로 한정되는 것은 아니지만, 두께가 전술한 하한보다 지나치게 얇을 경우에는 기계적 물성이 저하되어 전지 사용 중 분리막이 쉽게 손상될 수 있다.
상기 다공성 기재에 존재하는 기공의 평균 직경 및 기공도 역시 특별히 제한되지 않으나 각각 0.1 내지 50μm 및 10 내지 95 %일 수 있다.
본 발명에 따른 리튬 메탈 전지의 형상은 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 원통형, 적층형, 코인형 등 다양한 형상일 수 있다.
이하, 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위해 바람직한 실시예를 제시하지만, 하기의 실시예는 본 발명을 보다 쉽게 이해하기 위하여 제공되는 것일 뿐 본 발명이 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
실시예 : 리튬 메탈 전지의 제조
리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 제조 : 제조예 1 내지 7
[제조예 1]
다공성 기재로 기공도 50% 및 두께 14μm인 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET, Polyethyleneterephthalate) 부직포(제조사:FTENE(KOR))를 준비한 후, 부직포의 표면 상에 그래핀(Graphene) 분산액(제조사:Cnano)을 딥코팅법(Dip coating)을 통해 코팅한 후 진공 건조시켜 탄소 코팅층을 형성 하였다. 이때, 탄소 코팅층에 있어서 상기 부직포 단위면적당 코팅된 그래핀 입자의 중량은 0.3g/m2이였다.
상기 부직포 상에 형성된 탄소 코팅층 위에 두께 60μm의 리튬 금속 호일을 적층시킨 후 압연시켜, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
[제조예 2]
탄소 코팅층에 있어서 상기 부직포 단위면적당 코팅된 그래핀 입자의 중량이 0.6g/m2인 것을 제외하고는, 제조예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
[제조예 3]
두께 35μm의 리튬 금속 호일을 사용한 것을 제외하고는, 제조예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
[제조예 4]
음극으로서 두께 60μm의 리튬 금속 호일을 사용하였다.
[제조예 5]
다공성 기재로 제조예 1과 동일한 부직포를 준비한 후 탄소 코팅층을 형성하지 않고, 제조예 1과 동일한 리튬 금속 호일을 적층시킨 후 압연시켜, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
[제조예 6]
다공성 기재로 기공도 71% 및 두께 8μm인 폴리이미드(PI, Polyimide) 부직포(제조사: Kolon)를 준비한 후 탄소 코팅층을 형성하지 않고, 제조예 1과 동일한 리튬 금속 호일을 적층시킨 후 압연시켜, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
[제조예 7]
두께 35μm의 리튬 금속 호일을 사용한 것을 제외하고는, 제조예 5와 동일한 방법으로 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 제조하였다.
리튬 메탈 전지의 제조: 실시예 1 내지 3 및 비교예 1 내지 4
[실시예 1]
제조예 1에 의해 제조된 음극과 함께 하기의 음극, 분리막 및 전해액을 제조하여 리튬 메탈 전지를 조립하였다.
(1) 양극 : 물을 용매로 하고, 황-탄소 복합체(S:C=75:25), 도전재 및 바인더를 90:5:5의 비율로 혼합하여 양극 활물질 슬러리를 제조하였다. 이때, 도전재는 덴카블랙을, 바인더는 스티렌 부타디엔 고무/카르복시메틸 셀룰로오스(SBR:CMC=7:3)를 사용하였다.
상기 양극 활물질 슬러리를 알루미늄 집전체의 일면에 도포한 후, 건조하여 양극을 제조하였다.
(2) 분리막 : 두께 16μm 및 기공 45%의 폴리에틸렌 막을 사용하였다.
(3) 전해액 : 유기용매로 디메톡시에탄(DME)과 디옥솔란(DOL)을 1:1의 부피비로 사용하고, 1M의 LiTFSI를 혼합하고, 전해액 대비 1중량%의 LiNO3를 첨가하여 전해액을 제조하였다.
[실시예 2]
제조예 2의 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 사용한 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 메탈 전지를 제조하였다.
[실시예 3]
제조예 3에 의해 제조된 리튬 메탈 음극을 각각 음극 및 양극으로 사용(양극과 음극 각각에 포함된 '탄소 코팅층이 형성된 다공성 기재'가 서로 대면하도록 위치시킴)하고, 상기 양극과 음극 사이에 실시예 1과 동일한 분리막을 위치시키고, 실시예 1과 동일한 전해액을 주액한 후 밀봉하여 코인셀 타입의 리튬-리튬 대칭셀인 리튬 메탈 전지를 제조하였다.
[비교예 1 내지 3]
비교예 1 내지 3은 각각 제조예 4 내지 6의 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극을 사용한 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 리튬 메탈 전지를 제조하였다.
[비교예 4]
제조예 7에 의해 제조된 리튬 메탈 음극을 각각 음극 및 양극으로 사용(다공성 기재가 서로 대면하도록 위치시킴)한 것을 제외하고는, 실시예 3과 동일한 방법으로 리튬-리튬 대칭셀인 리튬 메탈 전지를 제조하였다.
실험예 1 : 음극의 물성 평가
상기 제조예 1 내지 7에서 제조된 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극에 대하여 물성 평가를 실시하였다.
구체적으로, 두께 및 단위면적당 질량을 측정하여 하기 표 1에 나타내었다. 또한, 인장강도는 ASTM E8/E8M을 기준으로 측정하여 하기 표 1과 같이 나타내고, 그 중 제조예 4, 5는 각각 도 4, 도 5에 그래프로 결과를 나타내었다.

인장강도 측정 결과, 음극 제조시 리튬 금속 만을 단독으로 사용한 제조예 4는 1MPa 이하의 인장 강도로 음극의 기계적 강도가 낮다는 점에서, 전지의 안정적 구동을 기대하기 어려운 것을 알 수 있었다.
반면, PET 부직포를 포함한 제조예 5의 경우 음극의 인장강도가 17MPa 이상으로, 다공성 기재를 음극 지지체로 포함하는 경우 음극의 기계적 강도가 향상되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
또한, PET 부직포 및 탄소 코팅층을 포함한 제조예 1 및 2의 경우 음극의 인장강도가 18MPa 이상으로, PET 부직포만 포함하는 경우에 비해 음극의 기계적 강도가 추가적으로 향상되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
실험예 2 : 음극의 표면 형상(SEM)
제조예 2 및 제조예 5를 통해 제조된 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 표면을 주사 전자 현미경(SEM, Scanning Electron Microscope)으로 촬영하여, 각각 도 6 및 도 7과 같이 나타내었다.
상기 SEM 이미지를 통하여, 다공성 기재 상에 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층을 형성하여 음극을 제조한 제조예 2는, 판상 구조의 탄소 입자인 그래핀의 존재로 인하여 상대적으로 다공성 기재의 공극이 감소한 것을 알 수 있었다. 반면, 탄소 코팅층의 형성 없이 다공성 기재 상에 리튬 호일을 바로 압연시켜 음극을 제조한 제조예 5는 제조예 2와 달리 다수의 공극이 존재하는 것을 알 수 있었다.
실험예 3 : 리튬-리튬 대칭셀 타입의 전지 수명 평가
상기 실시예 3 및 비교예 4에 의해 제조된 리튬-리튬 대칭셀인 리튬 메탈 전지에 대하여, 25℃에서 전지의 사이클 수명 평가를 실시하였다.
구체적으로, 0.5mA/cm2의 전류밀도로 10 mAh까지 1회 방전 및 충전을 진행한 후 1.5mA/cm2의 전류 밀도로 사이클을 반복하여 전압 범위 -1.0V 또는 1.0V에 도달하는 시점까지의 수명을 측정하여, 그 결과를 하기 표 2 및 도 8, 9로 나타내었다.

상기 표 2 및 하기 도 8, 9를 참고하면, 다공성 기재 상에 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층을 형성하여 음극을 제조한 실시예 3의 경우, 다공성 기재만을 사용하고 탄소 코팅층을 형성하지 않은 비교예 4에 비하여 더 긴 수명을 나타내는 결과를 확인할 수 있었다.
이를 통하여, 다공성 기재는 분리막과 리튬 표면 사이에 위치하여 저항층으로 작용하게 되는데, 그래핀과 같은 판상 구조의 탄소입자를 포함하는 탄소코팅층이 형성됨으로써 과전압이 해소되는 효과로 수명이 개선되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
실험예 4 : 리튬 메탈 전지의 방전용량 평가
상기 실시예 1, 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에 의해 제조된 리튬 메탈 전지에 대하여, 방전 용량을 평가하였다.
구체적으로, 전압범위 1.8 ~ 2.5 V에서 0.1C 방전/0.1C 충전 3 사이클, 0.2C 방전/0.2C 충전 3 사이클 이후 0.5C 방전/0.3C 충전 3사이클을 실시하여 전지의 방전용량을 측정하고, 비교예 1의 방전용량을 기준(100%)으로 하여 방전용량의 상대적 비율을 하기 표 3과 같이 나타내었다. 또한, 상기 사이클을 반복하여, 방전용량 평가를 실시하고 그 결과를 도 10, 11과 같이 나타내었다.

상기 표 3 및 도 10, 11의 방전용량 평가 결과를 통하여, 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층과 다공성 기재를 포함하는 실시예 1, 2의 경우, 이를 포함하지 않는 비교예 1 내지 3 대비 사이클이 진행될수록 상대적으로 더욱 우수한 방전용량을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 폴리이미드(PI)를 다공성 기재로 사용한 비교예 3의 경우에는 리튬 금속이 폴리이미드와 반응성을 가지는 바, 초반 방전용량이 급격히 감소한 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
상기 실시예 1, 2의 경우 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는 탄소 코팅층을 포함함으로써, 지지체인 다공성 기재의 표면이 리튬 금속과 친화성이 높아지며 그래핀과 같은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자로 인하여 다공성 기재의 기공이 줄어들어, 양극과의 상대적인 거리에 영향없이 리튬의 플레이팅(plating)시 안정적인 구조를 형성하여 리튬 효율 및 방전용량을 개선시킬 수 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
본 발명의 단순한 변형 내지 변경은 모두 본 발명의 영역에 속하는 것이며, 본 발명의 구체적인 보호 범위는 첨부된 특허청구범위에 의하여 명확해질 것이다.

Claims (10)
- 다공성 기재;상기 다공성 기재의 표면에 형성된 탄소 코팅층; 및상기 탄소 코팅층 상에 위치하는 리튬 금속층;을 포함하고,상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 탄소 입자를 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재는 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리부틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리아미드, 폴리아세탈, 폴리카보네이트, 폴리에테르에테르케톤, 폴리에테르설폰, 폴리페닐렌옥사이드, 폴리페닐렌설파이드, 폴리에틸렌나프탈렌, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드, 폴리염화비닐, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 셀룰로오스, 나일론, 폴리파라페닐렌벤조비스옥사졸, 폴리아릴레이트 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 것을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재의 기공도는 40% 내지 90%인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재의 두께는 0.5μm 내지 30μm인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 탄소 코팅층은 판상 구조의 그래핀 또는 그래핀 유도체를 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재의 단위면적당 코팅된 탄소 입자의 중량은 0.1 g/m2 내지 5 g/m2인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재의 일면에 탄소 코팅층이 형성되고,상기 다공성 기재와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층의 일면에 리튬 금속층이 적층된 구조인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 다공성 기재가 중앙에 위치하고,상기 다공성 기재의 양면에 각각 탄소 코팅층이 형성되고,상기 다공성 기재와 반대방향을 향하는 탄소 코팅층의 일면 각각에 리튬 금속층이 적층된 다층구조인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,상기 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극의 인장강도는 1 MPa 내지 300 MPa인, 리튬 메탈 전지용 음극.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 9 항 중 어느 한 항의 음극을 포함하는, 리튬 메탈 전지.
