Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an optical waveguide circuit including a ring-shaped waveguide.
  • An optical waveguide circuit that is used in optical communication and that has a ring-shaped waveguide and that outputs while maintaining the polarization state of input light is known.
  • This type of optical waveguide circuit includes a ring waveguide, an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer, an input connection waveguide, and an output connection waveguide.
  • the ring-shaped waveguide is composed of an arcuate curved waveguide.
  • the optical transmission intensity of this type of optical waveguide circuit shows wavelength dependence with a periodic interval (FSR: Free Spectral Range).
  • the FSR can be set freely by adjusting the length of the ring-shaped waveguide.
  • Optical filters having various transmission characteristics are used for optical communication, and some of them can be realized by applying a ring resonator.
  • Polarization multiplex signals are used in recent optical communication technology, and optical waveguide circuits are required to have the characteristic of maintaining the input polarization and outputting (maintaining polarization). However, in an actual optical waveguide circuit, the polarization maintaining property may be lost for the following reason.
  • the optical waveguide formed on the substrate has anisotropic stress with respect to the waveguide cross section. This is because the structure consisting of the clad and the core spreads horizontally in the horizontal direction on the substrate surface, but is generally thinner than the horizontal direction in the vertical direction to the substrate surface. This is because the stress applied to the waveguide is different. Further, when the substrate, the lower clad, the core, and the upper clad constituting the waveguide have different coefficients of thermal expansion, if a high temperature heat treatment of, for example, 1000° C. or higher is performed in the process of manufacturing the waveguide, the waveguide is heated during the cooling process. Stress is generated.

  • the volume of the porous body made of fine particles is greatly changed in the process of transparent vitrification, and in some cases a large stress that deforms the core is generated. appear.
  • These stresses have anisotropy and cause the vibration plane of each polarization mode (the vibration direction is called the polarization main axis and the vibration plane is called the polarization plane) to be inclined with respect to the substrate surface.
  • TM Transverse Magnetic
  • the TM polarized wave means a polarized wave in a direction perpendicular to the substrate surface. That is, TM polarized light that did not exist at the time of input is generated, and the intensity of TE polarized light decreases.
  • This phenomenon is called polarization coupling, and in this case, it can be represented by the polarization mode coupling amount obtained by dividing the TM component intensity by the TE polarization component intensity. In applications where polarization is maintained, higher polarization retention is more preferable. That is, the smaller the polarization mode coupling amount is, the more preferable, and generally, -20 dB or less is desired.

Description

 したがって、光導波路回路に、TE(Transverse Electric)偏波(基板面と平行方向の偏波)の光を入力した際に、TM(Transverse Magnetic)偏波の光が発生する場合がある。
