Definitions
- the present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent device. More specifically, the present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element that can be used as a display device such as a display unit of an electronic device, a lighting device, and the like.
- the organic electroluminescent element When used as a display device, the organic electroluminescent element has excellent characteristics such as high brightness and high definition display and a wider viewing angle than liquid crystal display devices. Is expected to expand its use as a display and lighting device. Furthermore, the use of organic electroluminescent elements in other applications is also being considered, taking advantage of the characteristics of being thin, flexible, and flexible, and for example, applying a sheet containing the organic electroluminescent element to the skin and irradiating it with light. , A method of obtaining a cosmetic effect or a therapeutic effect by activating the skin has been proposed (see Patent Document 1 and Non-Patent Document 1).
- the features of thinness, flexibility, and flexibility are features that liquid crystal display devices that are widely used at present do not have, and are important features for expanding the use of organic electroluminescent elements and developing new applications. Even in the application of a sheet containing the above-mentioned organic electroluminescent element to the skin, the thinner and more flexible the sheet, the less the discomfort when worn on the skin. Therefore, an element excellent in thinness and flexibility is required. To be On the other hand, the life of the device, which can maintain light emission for a required time, is also an important factor.
- the elements described in Non-Patent Documents 2 and 3 are excellent in thinness and flexibility, but are not sealed and have a short life. Although the life is improved by sealing, the thickness of the element becomes thicker, and the flexibility is lowered.
- the conventional element has room for improvement in terms of achieving both thinness and flexibility and longevity.
- the thickness of the element is a sufficiently thin region. Specifically, it is less than 10 ⁇ m, and preferably 3 ⁇ m or less if possible.
- the present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and provides an organic electroluminescent device having a thinness of less than 10 ⁇ m and excellent flexibility while maintaining a device life comparable to that of a conventional organic electroluminescent device.
- the purpose is to provide.
- the present inventor examined an organic electroluminescent device having excellent thinness and flexibility while maintaining a device life comparable to that of a conventional organic electroluminescent device, and using an extremely thin film substrate, formed on the substrate.
- An organic electroluminescent device having a so-called reverse structure having a structure in which a plurality of layers are laminated between a cathode and an anode is provided, and while maintaining the same device life as a conventional organic electroluminescent device, a thickness of less than 10 ⁇ m. It was found that an organic electroluminescent device having excellent flexibility can be obtained, and the present invention has been achieved.
- the present invention is an organic electroluminescence device having a structure in which a plurality of layers are laminated between an anode and a cathode formed on a substrate, and the device has a thickness of less than 10 ⁇ m. Is an organic electroluminescent device.
- the substrate is preferably a single layer.
- the substrate is preferably a paraxylylene polymer monolayer film.

- the present invention is also a display device including the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention.
- the present invention is also an illuminating device comprising the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention.
- the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention has a device life comparable to that of a conventional organic electroluminescent device, but is thinner and has excellent flexibility, and therefore, it can be used in display devices such as displays of televisions and mobile phones and lighting devices. In addition, it can be suitably used for various purposes such as application of the element to the skin for the purpose of obtaining a cosmetic effect or a therapeutic effect.
- FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram for explaining an organic electroluminescent device of Comparative Example 1.
- FIG. 3 is a diagram showing voltage-current density characteristics and current density-external quantum efficiency characteristics of the organic electroluminescence device obtained in Example 1.
- FIG. 3 is a diagram showing changes over time in a light emission image diagram of the organic electroluminescent device obtained in Example 1.
- FIG. 6 is a diagram showing changes over time in a light emission image diagram of an organic electroluminescence device obtained in Comparative Example 1.
- 5 is a diagram showing voltage-current density characteristics and current density-external quantum efficiency characteristics of the organic electroluminescence device obtained in Example 2.
- the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention is an organic electroluminescent device having an inverted structure having a device thickness of less than 10 ⁇ m.
- an organic electroluminescence device a so-called forward structure in which a plurality of layers are laminated between a cathode and an anode formed on a substrate is generally used. Since the organic electroluminescent device having a forward structure is easily deteriorated by oxygen and water and strict sealing is essential, a plurality of inorganic layers having a certain thickness are required. Therefore, as a substrate, a substrate having a thickness of 100 ⁇ m or more is used as a result for the purpose of ensuring the barrier function and ensuring the life.
- the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention has a device life comparable to that of the conventional device by combining the organic electroluminescent device having such an inverted structure and an ultrathin substrate having a total device thickness of less than 10 ⁇ m.

- the thickness of the substrate can be measured by a crystal oscillator film thickness meter, a contact type step meter, spectroscopic ellipsometry, or the like.
- the substrate is preferably a single layer.
- the reason is that it is difficult for the ultra-thin film formed by laminating a plurality of layers to be a flat film because it is easily curled due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient and its thinness.
- a single layer makes it easier to maintain a flat state as compared with a laminated film.
- the material of the substrate constituting the organic electroluminescent device of the present invention is not particularly limited, and may be either an organic material or an inorganic material, but an organic material is preferable because an extremely thin substrate is easily formed.
