Abstract

光学素子と画素とのアラインメントを必要とせずにスクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制可能な表示装置を実現する。表示装置(1)は、複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定するCF基板(13)と、出射光の輝度の半値全幅をCF基板からの入射光の輝度の半値全幅より広げるレンチキュラーレンズ(14)とを備え、レンチキュラーレンズはサブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。

Description

表示装置およびヘッドマウントディスプレイ
 本開示は、表示装置、および当該表示装置を用いたヘッドマウントディスプレイに関する。
 従来、ヘッドマウントディスプレイ(HMD)と呼ばれる、ユーザの視界全体に画像を拡大して表示させる表示装置が知られている。HMDにおいては、表示画面の正面に接眼レンズが設けられており、表示画面に表示される画像が当該接眼レンズにより拡大される。HMDの表示画面には、液晶ディスプレイ(LCD)、または有機EL(Electro Luminescence)ディスプレイ(OLED)などが用いられる。
 LCDにおいては、例えばディスプレイの色の要素である赤(R)、緑(G)および青(B)のカラーフィルタ(CF、Color Filter)基板が設けられている。色の要素としては、上述したR、GおよびBに加えて、白(W)または黄(Ye)などといった色が追加される場合もある。CF基板において、各色の間には、混色を防ぐためのブラックマトリクス(BM)が配置されている。
 上述した通り、HMDにおいては、表示画面に表示される画像が拡大される。このため、HMDにおいては、通常のディスプレイでは視認できなかった、BMに起因する暗部が視認されるという問題が発生している。また、R、G、またはBといった単色を表示する場合、他の2色は非点灯状態となる。このような非点灯状態の箇所も、ブラックマトリクスと同様に暗部となる。これらの暗部が発生する現象は、一般にスクリーンドアエフェクトと呼ばれる。
 特許文献1には、ブラックマトリクスに起因する縞模様をなくすため、液晶パネルの基板の表面上に、液晶パネルの各画素に対応して形成される複数のマイクロレンズから成るマイクロレンズアレイ5が形成される表示装置が記載されている。

 しかしながら、特許文献1に記載されている従来技術においては、マイクロレンズは液晶パネルの各画素に対応して形成されるため、マイクロレンズアレイと画素との間でアラインメントを行う必要がある。
 本開示の一態様は、上記の課題に鑑み、光学素子と画素とのアラインメントを必要とせずにスクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制可能な表示装置を実現することを目的とする。
 上記の課題を解決するために、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置は、複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、前記色層と平行に設けられ、出射光の輝度の半値全幅を前記色層からの入射光の輝度の半値全幅より広げる光学素子とを備え、前記サブピクセルは、少なくとも1方向について周期性を有するように配置され、前記光学素子は、前記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置は、複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、前記色層と平行に設けられた光学素子とを備え、前記光学素子は、前記色層から入射する光を異方性散乱させる。
 本開示の一態様によれば、光学素子と画素とのアラインメントを必要とせずにスクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制可能な表示装置を実現できる。

 以下の説明では、それぞれの実施形態に係る表示装置からユーザに向かう方向をz方向とし、z方向に垂直、かつ互いに垂直な方向をx方向およびy方向として説明する。
 〔実施形態1〕
 以下、本開示の実施の形態について、図1~図6を参照して詳細に説明する。
 図1の(a)は、本実施形態に係る表示装置1の構成を示す断面図である。表示装置1は、複数の画素を有する表示装置である。表示装置1は、例えばヘッドマウントディスプレイ(HMD、Head Mount Display)に用いられる表示装置である。このため、表示装置1は、スマートフォンなどに用いられる表示装置(例えば解像度が300~500dpi)と比較して高精細な表示装置(例えば解像度が450~1000dpi、またはそれ以上)である。図1に示すように、表示装置1は、バックライト11(光源)、TFT(Thin Film Transistor)基板12、CF(Color Filter)基板13(色層、カラーフィルタ)、およびレンチキュラーレンズ14(光学素子)がz方向にこの順番で配置された構成を有する。
 バックライト11は、CF基板13に対して光を照射するバックライトである。バックライト11は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の周期構造の方向、または当該方向に対して±20°以内の方向において、狭指向性を有することが好ましい。具体的には、バックライト11は、少なくとも後述するサブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以内であることが好ましい。TFT基板12は、バックライト11が発した光の透過をサブピクセルごとに制御する薄膜トランジスタが設けられた基板である。
 CF基板13は、表示装置1が有する複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する。本実施形態のCF基板13は、ガラス基板13aの、TFT基板12と対向する面に、R(赤)フィルタ13r、G(緑)フィルタ13g、およびB(青)フィルタ13bがx方向(少なくとも1方向)に周期的に配置された構成を有する。なお、ガラス基板13aの代わりに、透光性を有する別の材料(樹脂など)で形成された基板を用いてもよい。また、CF基板13が備えるフィルタの色は上記の例に限定されず、例えばさらにW(白)を備えていてもよい。
 表示装置1においては、1つの画素が3つのサブピクセルを備え、3つのサブピクセルのそれぞれに、Rフィルタ13r、Gフィルタ13g、およびBフィルタ13bのいずれかが対応して設けられている。x方向に隣接するRフィルタ13r、Gフィルタ13g、およびBフィルタ13bのそれぞれの間には、混色を防止するためのブラックマトリクスBMが設けられている。本明細書において、「サブピクセルの幅」との語は、対応するフィルタの、ブラックマトリクスBMに覆われていない領域の幅を意味する。
 また、y方向に隣接するRフィルタ13r同士、Gフィルタ13g同士、およびBフィルタ13b同士の間にも、ブラックマトリクスBMが設けられている。表示装置1が備える複数の画素の周期の方向に直交する方向におけるブラックマトリクスBMの幅は、10μm以下、またはサブピクセルの1周期の長さの30%以下であることが好ましい。これにより、y方向に隣接するフィルタ間のブラックマトリクスBMに起因する黒線の発生を抑制することができる。このため、表示装置1においては、後述するレンチキュラーレンズ14による、ブラックマトリクスBMに起因する黒線の抑制と併せて、スクリーンドアエフェクトを効果的に抑制することができる。
 レンチキュラーレンズ14は、出射光の輝度の半値全幅を、CF基板13からの入射光の輝度の半値全幅より広げる光学素子である。つまり、レンチキュラーレンズ14は、CF基板13を透過した光を入射光とし、入射光よりもCF基板13が備える各フィルタの周期性の方向における輝度の半値全幅が大きい光を出射光とする光学素子である。
 本実施形態のレンチキュラーレンズ14では、y方向に延伸する複数のレンズ素子が、CF基板13のガラス基板13a(透光性部材)の面上に、光が出射する側に凸に、x方向に並んだ状態で形成されている。なお、レンチキュラーレンズ14は、ガラス基板13aとは別の、CF基板13に平行な透光性部材の面上に、光が出射する側に凸であるように形成されていてもよい。
 レンチキュラーレンズ14は、CF基板13の周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。換言すれば、レンチキュラーレンズ14は、表示装置1が備える複数の画素の、サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。すなわち、x方向におけるレンズ素子14aの幅をPl、CF基板13の周期をPpとした場合、Pp=m×Pl(m>1)が満たされる。ここで、mは非整数であってよい。さらに、レンチキュラーレンズ14の周期構造は、Rフィルタ13r、Gフィルタ13g、およびBフィルタ13bのx方向における幅が最も大きいフィルタの当該幅より小さいことが好ましい。
 レンチキュラーレンズ14がこのような周期構造を有することで、レンチキュラーレンズ14とCF基板13との間で、高精度なアラインメントを行う必要がない。すなわち、表示装置1は、アラインメントフリーな構成でスクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制できる。
 HMD用のLCDの場合、サブピクセルの幅は20μm以下である。また、ガラス基板14bの厚さは、例えば100μm以上であってよい。それぞれの値の具体的な例については後述する。
 また、表示装置1は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の出射側、またはレンズ素子14aとガラス基板14bとの間に、特定の方向の偏光のみを透過させる偏光板18を備えていてもよい。ここで、偏光板18が透過させる偏光の方向は、特に制限されない。
 図1の(c)は、偏光板18がレンチキュラーレンズ14の出射側に設けられた表示装置1を示す断面図である。図1の(c)に示すように、偏光板18の位置がレンチキュラーレンズ14の出射側である場合、レンチキュラーレンズ14とCF基板13との距離が近い。このため、CF基板13から出射された光が過度に広がりにくく、レンチキュラーレンズの谷間または表面で散乱される迷光による画質の低下を招きにくい。一方で、表示装置1に表示される画像のコントラストが悪化しやすいという問題がある。
 図1の(d)は、偏光板18がレンズ素子14aとガラス基板14bとの間に設けられた表示装置1を示す断面図である。図1の(d)に示すように、偏光板18の位置がレンズ素子14aとガラス基板14bとの間である場合、レンズ素子14aとCF基板13との距離が遠くなる。このため、CF基板13から出射された光が過度に広がりやすく、レンチキュラーレンズの谷間または表面で散乱される迷光による画質の低下を招きやすい。一方で、表示装置1に表示される画像のコントラストが悪化しにくいという長所がある。
 図1の(b)は、表示装置1が備える、隣り合う2つのGフィルタ13gに対応するサブピクセルから発せられる緑色光の、輝度の分布を示すグラフである。本明細書で特定の色のサブピクセルについて「隣り合う」と記載した場合、間に当該特定の色以外の色のサブピクセルが存在していてもよい。なお、図1の(b)では緑色光を発する画素の輝度を示しているが、赤色光および青色光を発する画素においても輝度の変化は同様である。
 表示装置1においては、レンチキュラーレンズ14の出射面側における緑色光の輝度の半値全幅は、サブピクセルの幅の2倍以上である。このため、表示装置1においては、図1の(b)に実線で示す、あるサブピクセルから発せられた緑色光の輝度分布と、図1の(b)に破線で示す、上記サブピクセルと隣り合うサブピクセルから発せられた緑色光の輝度分布との重なりが大きい。このため、上記2つのサブピクセル間の領域が暗くなりにくい。
 図2の(a)は、CF基板13の画素の配置を示す上面図である。上述した通り、CF基板13においては、Rフィルタ13r、Gフィルタ13g、およびBフィルタ13bが、x方向に周期的に配置されている。一方、y方向については、Rフィルタ13r、Gフィルタ13g、およびBフィルタ13bのいずれかが、連続して配置されている。
 図2の(b)は、表示装置1がG単色を表示した状態を示す図である。表示装置1がG単色を表示した状態では、Rフィルタ13rおよびBフィルタ13bの領域は光を発しない非点灯状態である。しかし、上述した通り、レンチキュラーレンズ14から出射される光の輝度の、x方向における半値全幅は、Gフィルタ13gのx方向における幅の2倍以上であるため、図2の(b)に示すように、隣り合うG画素の間の領域が暗くなりにくい。すなわち、表示装置1においては、ブラックマトリクスBM、および非点灯状態のサブピクセルに起因するスクリーンドアエフェクトが抑制される。
 図3は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の具体的な形状の例について説明するための図であり、(a)は従来の表示装置、(b)は本実施形態の表示装置1の図である。図3において、それぞれの値は以下の通りである。
A=5μm:サブピクセルの幅
P=8.5μm:個々のフィルタの幅
D1=200μm:ガラス基板13aの厚さ
D2=40mm:ガラス基板13aの表面から接眼レンズ15までの距離
D3=20mm:接眼レンズ15からユーザの目までの距離
ここで、D2とD3との境界は、接眼レンズ15の前後の光線を延長した場合における交点である。
 D2については、接眼レンズ15の屈折率により光路長が変化するが、簡単のため、以下の説明では光路長の変化を無視する。また、接眼レンズ15による像の拡大の倍率をMとし、以下の説明ではM=3とする。また、ユーザが目にする画像は接眼レンズ15により拡大された虚像であるが、以下の説明では幾何的な関係だけ考えることとする。例えばサブピクセルの幅Aは、倍率M=3の接眼レンズ15を介して見ると15μmであるが、以下の説明では5μmとする。また、一般に人間の瞳は2~6mm程度の大きさがあるが、簡単のため、以下の説明ではユーザの瞳の大きさを無視している。
 図3の(a)に示す従来の表示装置では、サブピクセルからある角度θ1で出射された光は、厚さD1のガラス基板13aを通って出射角θ10で空気中に出射され、距離D2+D3離れたユーザの目に届く。一方、角度θ1より大きい角度で出射された光は、ユーザの目には届かない。これにより、ユーザはサブピクセルの幅Aに対応する幅の光を目にする。この場合においては、隣接するサブピクセルが非点灯の場合には、スクリーンドアエフェクトが発生する。
 一方、図3の(b)に示す本実施形態の表示装置1では、角度θ1より大きい角度θ2でサブピクセルから出射された光がユーザの目に届く。具体的には、図3の(b)に示すように、角度θ2でサブピクセルから出射された光は、レンチキュラーレンズ14が存在しない場合には出射角θ20でCF基板13から出射されるため、ユーザの目に入らない。しかし表示装置1はレンチキュラーレンズ14を備えるため、角度θ2でサブピクセルから出射された光は出射角θ3でユーザの目に向けて出射される。その結果、ユーザの目には、M×θ3の角度から光が来ているように見える。
 ここで、色配置周期をB=3×P=25.5μmとした場合、表示装置1の解像度を維持するためには、サブピクセルの中心から、サブピクセルの周期の方向に±B/2の範囲の光がユーザの目に届く状態であることが好ましい。ただし、隣り合う同色のサブピクセルとの間で多少範囲が重なってもよい。
 以下に、上記の好ましい状態について、関係式を用いて説明する。この場合、光は以下の式(1)

を満たす。ここで、θ4は、サブピクセルの中心からB/2離れた位置からの光がユーザの目に届く場合における、当該光のレンチキュラーレンズ14への入射角である。
 また、ガラス基板13aの屈折率をn1=1.5、空気の屈折率をn2=1.0とした場合、以下の式(2)

 好ましい状態について、上述したA、B、およびD1~D3を上記の式(5)および(6)に代入することで、θ3=0.007°、θ2=2.9°となる。すなわち、レンチキュラーレンズ14は、入射角θ2=2.9°である光を出射角θ3=-0.007°で出射させる形状であればよい。レンチキュラーレンズ14がこの条件を満たすためには、例えばレンチキュラーレンズ14のピッチが3.0μm、曲率が100μm、高さが0.11μmであればよい。また、レンチキュラーレンズ14の延伸方向に垂直な断面における、レンズ素子14aの立ち上がり部分の傾斜は、例えば8.7°であることが好ましい。
 レンチキュラーレンズ14についての上記の値は、好ましい例の1つを示したものであって、発明の範囲を限定するものではない。レンチキュラーレンズ14の、周期方向におけるピッチは、1μm以上かつ25μm以下であることが好ましい。また、レンチキュラーレンズ14の曲率は、20μm以上かつ2000μm以下であることが好ましい。また、レンチキュラーレンズ14の高さは、3μm以下であることが好ましい。また、レンズ素子14aの立ち上がり部分の傾斜は、5°以上かつ15°以下であることが好ましい。これにより、レンチキュラーレンズ14の出射面側における緑色光の輝度の半値全幅が、サブピクセルの幅の2倍以上になる。
 図4は、表示装置1における、レンチキュラーレンズ14の配置の別の例を示す図である。上述した通り、表示装置1においては、レンズ素子14aの幅Pl(すなわちレンチキュラーレンズ14の周期)は、CF基板13におけるフィルタの配置の周期Ppと一致しない。このため、CF基板13の周期方向とレンチキュラーレンズ14の周期方向とを一致させた場合、PlとPpとの関係によっては、表示装置1が表示する画像に、干渉によりモアレ縞が発生する虞がある。
 モアレ縞を抑制する方法として、レンチキュラーレンズ14をCF基板13に平行な面内で回転させた状態で配置することが挙げられる。このとき、レンチキュラーレンズ14の回転角度が大きいほどモアレ縞の抑制効果は大きくなるが、一方でy方向への光の拡がりが大きくなり、表示装置1の画質の低下を招来する。モアレ縞を抑制し、かつ画質を低下させないためには、図4に示すように、CF基板13に対するレンチキュラーレンズ14の回転角度を±20°以下とすることが好ましい。
 (変形例)
 上述した実施形態1においては、LCDである表示装置1について説明した。本変形例では、OLEDである表示装置1Aについて説明する。OLEDは、LCDと比較して高精細化が困難であり、HMD用の表示装置であっても解像度は例えば450dpi程度である。
 図5は、本変形例に係る表示装置1Aの断面図である。図5に示すように、表示装置1Aは、TFT/OLED基板16(色層)、対向基板17、およびレンチキュラーレンズ14を備える。
 TFT/OLED基板16は、自発光するOLED、およびOLEDを制御するためのTFTが設けられた基板である。TFT/OLED基板16が発する光は、バックライト11と同様、サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以下であることが好ましい。対向基板17は、TFT/OLED基板16を封止し、保護するための基板であり、封止層とも呼ばれる。
 図6の(a)は、表示装置1Aにおけるサブピクセルの配置を示す上面図である。LCDである表示装置1においては、R、G、およびBのフィルタがストライプ状に配置されている。しかし、表示装置1AはOLEDであるため、TFT等の回路配置の観点から、ストライプ状の画素配列を取ることは困難である。このため、TFT/OLED基板16においては、図6の(a)に示すように、x方向にはRまたはGの画素とBの画素とが交互に配置され、y方向にはRおよびGの画素が交互に配置されるか、またはBの画素が連続して配置される。このような画素の配置は、Sストライプ配列と呼ばれる。
 図6の(b)は、図6の(a)に示した表示装置1AにおいてG単色が表示された状態を示す上面図である。レンチキュラーレンズ14から出射される光の、y方向における輝度の半値全幅は、レンチキュラーレンズ14を通過する前と後とでほとんど変化しない。このため、表示装置1Aにおいては、y方向に周期的に表れる黒線を抑制することはできない。しかし、図6の(b)に示すように、表示装置1Aにおいても、隣り合うGフィルタ間の、x方向に周期的に表れる黒線を抑制することはできる。
 また、図6の(c)は、表示装置1Aにおけるサブピクセルの別の配置を示す上面図である。図6の(c)においてはレンチキュラーレンズ14を省略している。OLEDである表示装置1Aにおけるサブピクセルの配置としては、上述したSストライプ配列の他、図6の(c)に示すような、ペンタイル配列と呼ばれる配置も考えられる。ペンタイル配列においては、サブピクセルが、表示装置1における水平方向および垂直方向に対して45°傾いた状態で配置される。したがって、ブラックマトリクスBMに起因する黒線も、同様に45°傾いた黒線として現れる。画素の配置がペンタイル配列である場合にも、表示装置1と比較して効果は小さいものの、ブラックマトリクスBMに起因する黒線を抑制できる。
 このように、OLEDである表示装置1Aについても、本実施形態のレンチキュラーレンズ14を設けることで、LCDである表示装置1と比較して効果は小さいものの、スクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制することができる。また、表示装置1AはOLEDであるため、バックライト11を備える必要がなく、部品点数を削減することができる。
 〔実施形態2〕
 本開示の他の実施形態について、図7に基づいて説明すれば、以下のとおりである。なお、説明の便宜上、前記実施形態にて説明した部材と同じ機能を有する部材については、同じ符号を付記し、その説明を省略する。
 図7は、本実施形態に係る表示装置2の構成を示す断面図である。表示装置2は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の代わりに異方性散乱部材24(光学素子)を備える点で、表示装置1と相違する。
 異方性散乱部材24は、入射光を異方性散乱させる光学素子である。本実施形態の異方性散乱部材24は、入射光をx方向に大きく散乱させて出射させ、y方向にはほとんど散乱させずに出射する。具体的には、異方性散乱部材24は、レンチキュラーレンズ14と同様、異方性散乱部材24の出射面側での、x方向における輝度の半値全幅を、サブピクセルの幅の2倍以上にする。一方で、異方性散乱部材24から出射される光の、y方向における輝度の半値全角は、好ましくは30°以内である。このような異方性散乱部材24としては、例えば特許文献2に記載されている、針状フィラー(フィラー)を用いた光拡散フィルムを好適に用いることができる。
 具体的には、異方性散乱部材24は、光を散乱させる針状フィラーと、針状フィラーを封止するマトリックスとを有する。針状フィラーの屈折率と前記マトリックスの屈折率との差は0.1以上であることが好ましい。また、針状フィラーの短径は0.1μm以上であることが好ましい。また、針状フィラーのアスペクト比は10以上かつ1000以下であることが好ましい。また、異方性散乱部材24における針状フィラーの比率は50質量%以上かつ80質量%以下であることが好ましい。
 このような表示装置2も、上述した表示装置1と同様の効果を奏することができる。
 〔実施形態3〕
 本開示の他の実施形態について、図8および図9に基づいて説明すれば、以下のとおりである。
 図8の(a)は、本実施形態に係る表示装置3の構成を示す断面図である。表示装置3は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の代わりに回折格子34(光学素子)を備える点で、表示装置1と相違する。回折格子34は、入射光を回折させる。
 図8の(b)は、回折格子34の一例を示す断面図である。また、図8の(c)は、回折格子34の別の例を示す断面図である。回折格子34は、例えば図8の(b)に示すような、断面が矩形波の形状を有する回折格子であってよい。また、回折格子34は、図8の(c)に示すような、ブレーズド型の回折格子であってもよい。回折格子34がブレーズド型の回折格子である場合、回折格子34の形状は、例えば0次光および±1次光を利用するように規定されていてもよい。
 回折格子34は、レンチキュラーレンズ14と同様、CF基板13の光の出射面側での、x方向における輝度の半値全幅を、サブピクセルの幅の2倍以上にする。一方で、回折格子34から出射される光の、y方向における輝度の半値全角は、好ましくは30°以内である。
 図9は、回折格子34のさらに別の例を示す断面図である。回折格子34は、例えば図9に示すような、三角波状の形状を有するものであってもよい。回折格子34が三角波状の形状を有する場合、0次光および±1次光を効率よく出射することができる。
 回折格子34の具体的な形状について、以下に検討する。実施形態1では、入射角2.9°の光を出射角0.007°で出射させる光学素子について検討した。ここでは、簡単のため、回折格子34の三角波の包絡面に対して出射角0°で入射した光が、出射角2.9°で出射される場合を考える。
 図9において、θ21は、回折格子34の三角波の包絡面と回折格子34の界面とがなす角である。また、θ21は、上記包絡面に垂直な光の、回折格子34の界面への入射角でもある。また、θ22は、回折格子34の界面からの出射光の出射角である。
 出射光の強度は、光路長差が波長λと等しい場合、すなわち以下の式(11)
d×sin(θ22-θ21)=λ (11)
が満たされる場合に強くなる。ここで、dは回折格子34の格子間距離である。
 入射光と出射光との角度変化が2.9°であることから、θ22-θ21=2.9°である。実施形態1と同様に考えると、θ21=8.7°となり、θ22=5.8°となる。波長λを視感度の高い緑色光の波長である550nmとすると、式(11)から格子間距離d=10.87μmと求められる。
 回折格子34についての上記の値は、好ましい例の1つを示したものであって、発明の範囲を限定するものではない。回折格子34は、三角波状の形状を有する場合には、格子間距離が3μm以上かつ25μm以下であることが好ましい。また、回折格子34の包絡面と回折格子34の表面とがなす角が3°以上かつ10°以下であることが好ましい。これにより、回折格子34の出射面側における緑色光の輝度の半値全幅が、サブピクセルの幅の2倍以上になる。
 なお、回折格子34として、上述した例以外の形状を有する回折格子を使用してもよい。また、そのような回折格子は、例えば±2次以降の回折光を利用するものであってもよい。ただし、回折格子の形状を複雑化させず、かつ光を効率的に利用できるという点から、0次光と±1次光との干渉を利用する回折格子を回折格子34として使用することが好ましい。
 〔実施形態4〕
 本開示の他の実施形態について、図10に基づいて説明すれば、以下のとおりである。
 図10は、本実施形態に係る表示装置4の構成を示す断面図である。表示装置4は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の代わりにレンチキュラーレンズ44(光学素子)を備える点で表示装置1と相違する。
 レンチキュラーレンズ44では、y方向に延伸する複数のレンズ素子44aが、CF基板13に平行なガラス基板44b(透光性部材)の面上に、光が入射する側に凸に、x方向に並んだ状態で形成されている。なお、レンチキュラーレンズ44は、ガラス以外の透光性を有する材料で形成されていてもよい。
 このような表示装置4も、表示装置1などと同様の効果を奏することができる。
 〔実施形態5〕
 本開示の他の実施形態について、図11に基づいて説明すれば、以下のとおりである。
 図11は、本実施形態に係る表示装置5の構成を示す断面図である。表示装置5は、レンチキュラーレンズ14の代わりにレンチキュラーレンズ54(光学素子)を備える点で表示装置1と相違する。レンチキュラーレンズ54は、レンチキュラーレンズ14などとは異なり、CF基板13のガラス基板13a(透光性部材)の、光が出射する側の面に形成された、y方向に延伸する溝である。すなわち、レンチキュラーレンズ54は、ガラス基板13aの面内に形成され、光が入射する側に凸である。なお、レンチキュラーレンズ54は、ガラス基板13aとは別の、CF基板13に平行な透光性部材の面内に形成されてもよい。
 このような表示装置5も、表示装置1などと同様の効果を奏することができる。
 〔まとめ〕
 本開示の態様1に係る表示装置(1など)は、複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層(CF基板13など)と、前記色層と平行に設けられ、出射光の輝度の半値全幅を前記色層からの入射光の輝度の半値全幅より広げる光学素子(レンチキュラーレンズ14など)とを備え、前記サブピクセルは、少なくとも1方向について周期性を有するように配置され、前記光学素子は、前記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。
 上記の構成によれば、表示装置は、各画素の色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、当該色層に平行に設けられた光学素子を備える。光学素子は、色層から入射した光の輝度の半値全幅より広い半値全幅を有する光を出射させる。また、サブピクセルは、少なくとも1方向について周期性を有するように配置され、光学素子は、サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有する。したがって、光学素子と画素とのアラインメントを必要とせずにスクリーンドアエフェクトを抑制可能な表示装置を実現できる。
 本開示の態様2に係る表示装置は、上記態様1において、前記光学素子は、レンチキュラーレンズ(14、44、54)であってもよい。
 本開示の態様3に係る表示装置は、上記態様2において、前記レンチキュラーレンズ(14)は、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面上に、光が出射する側に凸であるように形成されてもよい。
 本開示の態様4に係る表示装置は、上記態様2において、前記レンチキュラーレンズ(44)は、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面上に、光が入射する側に凸に形成されてもよい。
 本開示の態様5に係る表示装置は、上記態様2において、前記レンチキュラーレンズ(54)は、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面内に形成され、光が入射する側に凸であってもよい。
 上記のそれぞれの構成によれば、レンチキュラーレンズによって、色層から入射した光の輝度の半値全幅より広い半値全幅を有する光を出射させることができる。
 本開示の態様6に係る表示装置は、上記態様2から5のいずれかにおいて、前記レンチキュラーレンズは、周期方向におけるピッチが1μm以上かつ25μm以下であり、曲率が20μm以上かつ2000μm以下であり、高さが3μm以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、レンチキュラーレンズから出射される出射光の半値全幅が、入射光の半値全幅の2倍になるため、スクリーンドアエフェクトを適切に抑制できる。
 本開示の態様7に係る表示装置は、上記態様1において、前記光学素子は、回折格子(34)であってもよい。
 上記の構成によれば、回折格子によって、色層から入射した光の輝度の半値全幅より広い半値全幅を有する光を出射させることができる。
 本開示の態様8に係る表示装置は、上記態様7において、前記回折格子は、三角波状の形状を有し、格子間距離が3μm以上かつ25μm以下であり、当該回折格子の包絡面と当該回折格子の表面とがなす角が3°以上かつ10°以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、態様6と同様の効果を奏する。
 本開示の態様9に係る表示装置は、上記態様7または8において、前記回折格子は、0次光と±1次光との干渉を利用するものであることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、回折格子の形状を複雑化させず、かつ光を効率的に利用できる。
 本開示の態様10に係る表示装置は、上記態様1から9のいずれかにおいて、前記光学素子の周期構造は、前記サブピクセルの周期性の方向における幅が最も大きい前記サブピクセルの当該幅より小さいことが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、光学素子の周期構造の周期が、サブピクセルの周期性の周期と比較して十分に小さくなる。したがって、スクリーンドアエフェクトをより確実に抑制することができる。
 本開示の態様11に係る表示装置は、上記態様1から10のいずれかにおいて、前記光学素子の周期の方向の、前記複数の画素の周期方向に対する、当該複数の画素が配置された面に平行な面内における回転角度は、-20°以上かつ+20°以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、画質を低下させることなく、モアレの発生を抑制することができる。
 本開示の態様12に係る表示装置は、複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、前記色層と平行に設けられた光学素子(異方性散乱部材24)とを備え、前記光学素子は、前記色層から入射する光を異方性散乱させる。
 上記の構成によれば、態様1と同様の効果を奏する。
 本開示の態様13に係る表示装置は、上記態様12において、前記光学素子は、光を散乱させるフィラーと、前記フィラーを封止するマトリックスとを有し、前記フィラーの屈折率と前記マトリックスの屈折率との差は0.1以上であり、前記フィラーの短径は0.1μm以上であり、アスペクト比は10以上かつ1000以下であり、フィラーの比率が光学素子の50質量%以上かつ80質量%以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、態様6および8と同様の効果を奏する。
 本開示の態様14に係る表示装置は、上記態様1から13のいずれかにおいて、前記画素の色を決定する色層は、カラーフィルタ(CF基板13)であってもよい。
 上記の構成によれば、カラーフィルタの色によってサブピクセルの色を決定することができる。
 本開示の態様15に係る表示装置は、上記態様14において、前記色層に光を入射させる光源をさらに備え、
 前記光源が発する光は、少なくとも上記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、サブピクセルから出射された光が隣接するサブピクセルの光と混色する虞が低減されるため、画質を向上させることができる。
 本開示の態様16に係る表示装置は、上記態様1から13のいずれかにおいて、前記画素の色を決定する色層(TFT/OLED基板16)は、自発光する機能を有していてもよい。
 上記の構成によれば、別途光源を設ける必要がないため、表示装置の部品点数を削減することができる。
 本開示の態様17に係る表示装置は、上記態様16において、前記色層が発する光は、上記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、態様14と同様の効果を奏する。
 本開示の態様18に係る表示装置は、上記態様1から17のいずれかにおいて、前記色層は、前記サブピクセル間に混色を防止するブラックマトリクスを備え、前記サブピクセルの周期の方向に直交する方向における前記ブラックマトリクスの幅は、10μm以下、または前記サブピクセルの、1周期の長さの30%以下であることが好ましい。
 上記の構成によれば、サブピクセルの周期の方向に直交する方向におけるブラックマトリクスに起因するスクリーンドアエフェクトを低減することができる。
 本開示の態様19に係るヘッドマウントディスプレイは、上記態様1から18のいずれかの表示装置を備える。
 上記の構成によれば、上記態様1と同様の効果を奏する。
 本開示は上述した各実施形態に限定されるものではなく、請求項に示した範囲で種々の変更が可能であり、異なる実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を適宜組み合わせて得られる実施形態についても本開示の技術的範囲に含まれる。さらに、各実施形態にそれぞれ開示された技術的手段を組み合わせることにより、新しい技術的特徴を形成することができる。
〔本開示の別の表現〕
 なお、本開示の一態様は、以下のようにも表現できる。
 すなわち、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置は、画素の色を決定する層(色層と呼ぶ)があり、色の要素(R, G, BやR, G, B, W)となる画素(サブピクセル)の配置について少なくとも1方向に周期性がある(色配置周期と呼ぶ)。色層よりも出光側に光を色配置周期方向ないしはその方向から±20度以内に広げる作用をもつ光学素子を有している。この光学素子は画素と1対1対応するものではなく、高精度なアライメントが不要である。この構成の結果、観察者から見た場合に、光学素子で広げられた方位について、サブピクセルの輝度半値幅がサブピクセルの本来の幅よりも2倍以上になっている。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、光学素子はレンチキュラーレンズを使用しており、その周期は色配置周期よりも小さい。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、レンチキュラーレンズの周期は望ましくは色の要素(サブピクセル)の中で最大の幅のものよりも小さい。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、レンチキュラーレンズはガラス上にあり、出光側に凸である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、レンチキュラーレンズはガラス上にあり、入光側に凸である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、レンチキュラーレンズはガラス上をエッチングしたガラス面内にあり、入光側に凸である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、光学素子は異方性散乱であり、その散乱輝度半値角は±30度以内である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、異方性散乱は望ましくは散乱の輝度半値角が±10度以内である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、光学素子は一つの方向のみに回折する回折格子である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、色周期は望ましくは色の要素のサイズよりも小さい。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、回折格子は0次および±1次光を使用している。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、画素を決定する層は、カラーフィルタである。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、カラーフィルタへ入射する光(バックライト光もしくは発光層からの光)は少なくとも一つの方位で輝度半値全角30度以下の狭指向性のものである。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、画素を決定する層は、自発光層である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置において、自発光層の発光による輝度視野角特性は、少なくとも一つの方位で輝度半値全角30度以下の狭指向性のものである。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置は、色配置周期方向と直交する方向において、BM幅が10um以下もしくは画素ピッチの30%以下である。
 また、本開示の一態様に係る表示装置は、上述の技術を使用したHMDである。

Claims (19)

  1.  複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、
     前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、
     前記色層と平行に設けられ、出射光の輝度の半値全幅を前記色層からの入射光の輝度の半値全幅より広げる光学素子とを備え、
     前記サブピクセルは、少なくとも1方向について周期性を有するように配置され、
     前記光学素子は、前記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性より小さい周期構造を有することを特徴とする表示装置。
  2.  前記光学素子は、レンチキュラーレンズであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示装置。
  3.  前記レンチキュラーレンズは、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面上に、光が出射する側に凸であるように形成されることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示装置。
  4.  前記レンチキュラーレンズは、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面上に、光が入射する側に凸に形成されることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示装置。
  5.  前記レンチキュラーレンズは、前記色層に平行な透光性部材の面内に形成され、光が入射する側に凸であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の表示装置。
  6.  前記レンチキュラーレンズは、周期方向におけるピッチが1μm以上かつ25μm以下であり、曲率が20μm以上かつ2000μm以下であり、高さが3μm以下であることを特徴とする請求項2から5のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  7.  前記光学素子は、回折格子であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示装置。
  8.  前記回折格子は、三角波状の形状を有し、格子間距離が3μm以上かつ25μm以下であり、当該回折格子の包絡面と当該回折格子の表面とがなす角が3°以上かつ10°以下であることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の表示装置。
  9.  前記回折格子は、0次光と±1次光との干渉を利用するものであることを特徴とする請求項7または8に記載の表示装置。
  10.  前記光学素子の周期構造は、前記サブピクセルの周期性の方向における幅が最も大きい前記サブピクセルの当該幅より小さいことを特徴とする請求項1から9のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  11.  前記光学素子の周期の方向の、前記複数の画素の周期方向に対する、当該複数の画素が配置された面に平行な面内における回転角度は、-20°以上かつ+20°以下であることを特徴とする請求項1から10のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  12.  複数の画素を有する表示装置であって、
     前記複数の画素のそれぞれの、色の要素に対応するサブピクセルの色を決定する色層と、
     前記色層と平行に設けられた光学素子とを備え、
     前記光学素子は、前記色層から入射する光を異方性散乱させることを特徴とする表示装置。
  13.  前記光学素子は、光を散乱させるフィラーと、前記フィラーを封止するマトリックスとを有し、
     前記フィラーの屈折率と前記マトリックスの屈折率との差は0.1以上であり、前記フィラーの短径は0.1μm以上であり、アスペクト比は10以上かつ1000以下であり、フィラーの比率が光学素子の50質量%以上かつ80質量%以下であることを特徴とする請求項12に記載の表示装置。
  14.  前記画素の色を決定する色層は、カラーフィルタであることを特徴とする請求項1から13のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  15.  前記色層に光を入射させる光源をさらに備え、
     前記光源が発する光は、少なくとも上記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以下であることを特徴とする請求項14に記載の表示装置。
  16.  前記画素の色を決定する色層は、自発光する機能を有することを特徴とする請求項1から13のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  17.  前記色層が発する光は、少なくとも上記サブピクセルの配置が有する周期性の方向において輝度の半値全角が30°以下であることを特徴とする請求項16に記載の表示装置。
  18.  前記色層は、前記サブピクセル間に混色を防止するブラックマトリクスを備え、
     前記複数の画素の周期の方向に直交する方向における前記ブラックマトリクスの幅は、10μm以下、または前記サブピクセルの、1周期の長さの30%以下であることを特徴とする請求項1~17のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置。
  19.  請求項1から18のいずれか1項に記載の表示装置を備えることを特徴とするヘッドマウントディスプレイ。
