- the sink device can check the deck status of the source device.
- a play command (argument: “Forward") may be transmitted to the source device.
- the source device may recognize the received CEC command and transmit video data and audio data to the sink device.
- the sink unit sends a deck control command (argument: “Skip Forward”) to the source unit, and the source unit recognizes this CEC command and then Chapter video and audio data can be transferred to the sink device.
- the HDMI cable may not support high resolution data transmitted and received.
- it is proposed to replace the cable or to propose a method for lowering the resolution of data transmitted and received.
- the HDMI system may additionally provide a character error detection (CED) function.
- the sink device may perform CED on the received data to monitor the data error and map it to the SCDC register as an error counter when an error occurs.
- the CED provides a mechanism for reporting the number of character errors detected by the sink device to the sink device, and the source device can check the link quality by sampling an error counter at periodic intervals.
- the sink device may implement a character error counter for each of TMDS channels 0, 1, and 2 while performing CED. For example, the sink device may check a character coming in through a reception channel, and if an error occurs in a character received in the channel, the sink device may increment a character error counter associated with the channel. The source device can check the link quality by reading the error counter of the sink device. The character error detection / counter check between the sink device and the source device may be performed through the SCDC to be described later.
- the error counter value may be maintained for each of the three channels.
- each error counter information (value) is 15 bits long and may be mapped to 2 bytes in a register of the SCDC source.
- the Least Significant Bit (LSB) 8 bits and the Most Significant Bit (MSB) 7 bits of the error counter can be assigned to the lower and higher addressed bytes, respectively, and are the topmost of the error count. 1 bit can be assigned to the "valid" flag.
- FIG 6 illustrates an SCDC structure according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- SCDC Status and Control Data Channel
- SCDC is a system that proposes a method of sharing link state information measured by a sink device to a source device, and corresponds to a point-to-point communication protocol in which data is exchanged between the source device and the sink device.
- SCDC communication may use the DDC channel (line I 2 C) of FIG.
- the SCDCS (SCDC Structure) is stored in the memory of the sink device and may include data as shown in the table of FIG. 6.
- the R / W represents data of the SCDCS stored in the sink device from the viewpoint of the source device, and whether the source device can read only or both read / write.
- Sink Version Display version information of SCDCS compliant sink devices. Set to 1.
- Update Flags (Update_0, Update_1): Set the bit to 1 when there is a change in information (Status, Character Error Detect, etc.) that the sink device should inform the source device.
- TMDS Configuration (TMDS_Config): If the TMDS_Bit_Clock_Ratio and Scrambling_Enable occupy 1 bit each, and the source device wants to enable the scrambling function of the sink device, set the corresponding bit to 1. Set to 0 if TMDS_Bit_Clock_Ratio is 1/10, or 1 if 1/40.
- Scrambler Status Set the bit to 1 when the sink device detects a scrambled control code sequence.
- Status Flags (Status_Flag_0, Status_Flag_1): Indicates whether or not data received through Clock, channel 0, 1, and 2 was successfully decoded.
- Err_Det_0 ⁇ 2_L / H LSB and MSB of the error counter detected in channels 0 ⁇ 3 respectively.
- Err_Det_Checksum Implemented so that the one-byte sum of the error detection values of the seven registers containing the checksum is zero.
- field values of 0x50 to 0x56 may be updated by the CED.
- the CED_Update flag of the SCDCS may be set to 1 if the sink device detects an error. When the source device reads the error value, the sink device can set the CED_Update flag back to zero. If the source device reads the BER, the sink device does not change the CED_Update field value.
- the CED flag / field value may be reset when the sink device is powered off or HPD (Hot Plug Detect) goes from low to high.
- FIG. 7 illustrates a method of changing the resolution of video data transmitted from a source device according to an embodiment of the present invention.

- the sink device receives video data from the source device (S8020), and may perform CED monitoring for each channel receiving the video (S8030). As described above, the CED monitoring may be performed by generating an error counter value by performing CED on video data received in each of three TMDS channels. The error counter value, or CED value, for each channel can be mapped / stored in the SCDC structure / data.
- the sink device monitors the CED (S8030), and determines whether the CED value exceeds the threshold value (S8040). If the CED value is less than or equal to the threshold value, the sink device continues to receive video data and monitor the CED value, and the CED value is set to If the value is larger than the threshold value, the procedure of changing the video data resolution may proceed.
- the CED value may indicate an error counter bit value for each channel. Accordingly, the sink device may determine whether the error counter bit exceeds a predetermined threshold for each of the channels 0 to 2. Therefore, even if an error occurs in only one of the three channels, it is possible to cope with this.
- the CED value When the CED value exceeds the threshold value, the CED value may correspond to a problem with the HDMI cable or when high resolution video data exceeding the capacity of the HDMI cable to transmit and receive is being transmitted or received.
- the sink device may proceed with the resolution change procedure when the error counter value exceeds the threshold for each TMDS channel or when the total error counter value of the entire TMDS channel exceeds the threshold.

Error detection and the storage and reading of this value through the CED function can operate as described above.
- the sink device transmits a CEC message requesting the video resolution change, and the source device may receive the CEC message (S9050).
- the CEC message requesting to change the resolution of the video data may include VIC information to identify a changing resolution of the video data, which will be described later.
- the source device may change the resolution of the video data output according to the received CEC message from the current VIC resolution to a lower VIC resolution (S9060).
- the source device may transmit the video data having downgraded resolution to the sink device.
- the source device may inform the sink device of the resolution change by sending a CEC message confirming that the resolution has been changed.
- the sink device may provide a UI indicating this (S9080).
- a UI that visually or audibly provides a message that a resolution has been changed
- FIG. 9 illustrates an embodiment of displaying such a message on a screen.
