Definitions
- the invention is in the technical field of adhesive tapes.
- the invention relates to adhesive tapes having a particular topography in the surface of an adhesive layer and more particularly to their use for bonding printing plates.
- Adhesive tapes are used in a variety of ways for connecting substrates, but also, for example, as covering or insulating tapes.
- An important role in adhesive tape bonding is the nature of the adhesive / substrate interface. This can be affected by various external influences, these influences usually lead to a reduction of the available contact surface, which in turn decreases the quality of the desired bonding. For example, the contact surface can be reduced by air inclusions between the adhesive and the substrate. This often manifests itself in inaccurate and / or less firm and less durable bonds.
- Precise positioning of substrates to be bonded is essential, for example, in flexographic printing processes. These are rotary printing processes using flexible photopolymer or rubber printing plates which have a relief corresponding to the information to be printed. These printing plates or printing plates are mounted on a printing cylinder. For this purpose, adhesive tapes are used, which significantly influence the print quality due to their compressibility properties.
- the printing plate then passes through a paint reservoir, wherein the relief absorbs the ink. Subsequently, the printing cylinder transports the printing plate to a transfer station, where the surface containing the ink comes into contact with the substrate to be printed. When detaching the printing plate from the substrate splits the ink film and leaves an impression corresponding to the on the Pressure plate surface contained relief.
- the color transfer requires a precise control of the contact pressure when placing the printing plate on the substrate, which significantly determines the order thickness and uniformity of the printed image.
- a double-sided adhesive tape is used to secure the printing plate to the printing cylinder. To ensure high print quality, the printing plate must be very carefully mounted on the impression cylinder and positioned precisely.
- Adhesive tapes with a parallel strip-wise or corrugated adhesive pattern were used. However, such adhesive tapes have proven to be less reliable in terms of the achieved bonding quality. Although this allowed air to be driven efficiently out of the interfaces, the adhesion between the support and the printing plate was too unreliable, especially at high throughput rates. Adhesive tapes with irregular adhesive relief were also tried, but also showed inadequate adhesive strength and, moreover, still had air pockets in some areas.
- US 5,296,277 describes an adhesive tape having a number of protrusions in the adhesive layer which have flattened adhesive tips whose area is less than 25% of the total area of the adhesive layer.
- No. 5,362,516 describes a structuring of the surface of an adhesive layer with the aid of previously applied balls, via which the adhesive is then distributed.
- GB 1 51 1060 describes an adhesive layer having at least one longer ridge or a longer recess, wherein at least one of these structures breaks through the outer edge of the adhesive layer.
- US 5,268,228 describes a double-sided adhesive tape with one or both sides contained in the adhesive layer joints, which are to serve to derive the air during bonding and are dimensioned so that they largely disappear after bonding.
- WO 98/29516 A1 also relates to adhesive layers with embossed relief and describes a method for controlling the topography of an adhesive surface, in which the relief or the topography of the adhesive layer controls the adhesive behavior.
- continuous grooves or channels to allow a flow of air can also promote the penetration of liquids, such as printer ink, at least in the edge regions of the bonds by the capillary effects described above. By such effects, the bonds can be weakened to substrate detachment.
- the object of the invention is therefore to provide an adhesive tape with which the above problems can be overcome.
- the tape should counteract the displacement of air bubbles within the adhesive tape by the applied contact pressure and allow largely constant adhesive surfaces and adhesive forces, regardless of the contact pressure.
- an intrusion of air and in particular of liquids in the edge regions of the bonds should be avoided.
- the solution of the task is based on the idea to derive trapped air to substantial proportions or not all to the outside, but to divert them into defined recesses within the adhesive layer and to hold there.
- a first subject of the invention is therefore the use of an adhesive tape comprising at least one pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer has at least one groove that does not reach to one of the edges of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, and the proportion of the total groove volume of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, which assign such grooves is more than 50% for gluing printing plates.
- the advantage of significantly reduced or no longer existing capillary effects in the edge regions of the bond comes into play. Fluids and air are therefore not or at least to a reduced extent sucked into the adhesive surface. A weakening of the bond is reduced as well as the formation of new air bubbles under the influence of an applied only at certain locations of the adhesive contact pressure or completely avoided.
- the proportion of the total groove volume of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, which grooves, which do not belong to one of the edges of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is more than 70%, more preferably more than 80%, in particular more than 90%, for example more than 93 %, more preferably more than 96%, and most preferably more than 99%.
- the "total groove volume of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer” is understood as meaning the total volume occupied by grooves in the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, taking into account both the volume occupied by grooves with edge contact and by grooves without edge contact.
- the printing plates can basically be used in all possible printing processes such as high-pressure, planographic, gravure and through-printing.
- the printing plates are preferably printing plates for high-pressure printing.
- Particularly preferred are the printing plates flexographic printing plates. Flexographic printing uses soft printing plates and low-viscosity inks.
- the printing plates usually consist of either a UV-sensitive photopolymer plate or rubber. The photopolymer printing plate is exposed through a negative mask with UV light, and the printing elements are developed in a Auswasch process. The production of the printing forms from rubber material takes place by means of laser engraving.
- the printing plates are glued to the printing cylinder of the flexographic printing press after they are made using adhesive edges.
- a "pressure-sensitive adhesive layer” is understood as meaning a layer of a viscoelastic adhesive whose set film remains permanently tacky and sticky at room temperature in a dry state
- the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer can come into direct contact with a substrate and, if necessary, after removal of an overlying release liner The bonding takes place by light pressure immediately on almost all substrates.
- the at least one pressure-sensitive adhesive layer of the adhesive tape of the use according to the invention preferably contains a polymer selected from the group consisting of natural rubbers, synthetic rubbers, polyacrylates, silicones and mixtures of two or more of the above polymers.
- the at least one pressure-sensitive adhesive layer of the adhesive tape according to the invention particularly preferably contains at least 30% by weight, more preferably at least 40% by weight and in particular at least 50% by weight, based on the total weight of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, of a polymer selected from the group consisting of natural rubbers, Synthetic rubbers, polyacrylates, silicones and mixtures of two or more of the above polymers.
- Synthetic rubbers preferably include styrene-butadiene copolymers, block copolymers such as styrene-isoprene-styrene, styrene-butadiene-styrene, styrene-ethylene / butylene-styrene, styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene, and combinations of the above copolymers.
- Synthetic as well as natural rubbers are usually used together with at least one tackifying resin. Suitable tackifying resins are, for example, polymers of unsaturated C 5 -C 9 -hydrocarbons, terpene resins and rosin.
- Polyacrylates are understood to mean polymers whose substance-related monomer base consists of at least 30% of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid esters and / or methacrylic acid esters, acrylic esters and / or methacrylic acid esters being present at least proportionally in general and preferably at least 30%.
- Polyacrylate "means a polymer which is obtainable by free-radical polymerization of acrylic and / or methylacrylic monomers and optionally other copolymerizable monomers.
- a polyacrylate is used which can be attributed to the following monomer composition: a) acrylic acid esters and / or methacrylic acid esters of the following formula

- the specified weight per unit area refers to the completely pronounced areas of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and thus not to the grooves provided according to the invention.
- the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is a coherent pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.
- This is understood to mean a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer which, parallel to its non-grooved surface, has a plane with a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer which is present continuously, that is, at no point perforated.
- a coherent adhesive layer naturally has the groove (s) provided according to the invention, but in the case of a coherent pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, they must not be so deep that the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is interrupted. Accordingly, provided that the surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer lies substantially in the x-y plane, for a coherent pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, a cut parallel to the x-y plane at a certain depth z must result in pressure-sensitive adhesive being present at each point in the cut plane.
- the non-grooved interface with the surrounding medium is viewed on the side of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer facing the substrate to be bonded.
- the adhesive tape of the use according to the invention can be both a single-sided and double-sided adhesive tape.
- a "groove” is understood to mean a macroscopically perceptible cutout within the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer that begins in the surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and that can basically have any shape and depth.

- the uniform topography achieved in this way ensures consistent adhesive properties over the full extent of the adhesive tape.
- the groove width of the groove or grooves, which do not extend to one of the edges of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is 10 to 200 ⁇ m.
- groove width is meant the maximum distance of the groove edges from each other at an angle of 90 ° to the direction of travel of the groove at any location of the groove.
- Figure 2 illustrates the meaning of the terms “groove depth” and "groove width” based on the representation of a parallel to the layer sequence and at an angle of 90 ° to the direction of the grooves made section through an inventive adhesive tape. In this mean:
- the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer has at least one groove which does not extend to one of the edges of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.
- the respective groove does not make contact with an outer boundary of the surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer or any surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer lying below the surface and parallel to the plane of the surface. Rather, there is always at least a minimal amount of PSA between such a groove and the edge of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.
- a groove then extends to one of the edges of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, when a fluid from an inner region of the groove can reach an edge of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer and emerge therefrom in an uninterrupted path.
- the configuration of the groove structure of the adhesive tape of the use according to the invention thus differs from conventional topographies, which often provide continuous channels in contact with the edges for the removal of air.
- adhesive tapes for bonding printing plates in particular printing plates for flexographic printing
- such channels for discharging air to the outside are standard in the adhesive layer because it is assumed that air must be removed from the bonding interface in order to reliably obtain a uniform printed image .

- the grooves of the adhesive tape of the use according to the invention are permanent grooves.
- This is understood to mean that the rheological properties of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer are adjusted such that the topography of the adhesive layer determined by the groove (s) is retained in its essential characteristic during the intended use of the adhesive tape.
- Particularly preferred means "permanent groove” that the topography even after repeated use of the adhesive tape or after use for a long time, for example, over several hours at 20 to 80 ° C, retained in its essential form. ensures that even with repeated or prolonged use of the adhesive tape a recording of air in the space provided recesses can be done and thus exact bonding are possible.

- a release liner - hereinafter also referred to simply as a liner - is understood to mean a covering material which has an adhesive surface which is applied directly to the composition for temporary protection of an adhesive and is usually removed by simply peeling off immediately before application of the adhesive can.
- a release liner ensures that the adhesive is not soiled before use.
- release liners can be adjusted by the nature and composition of the release materials so that the adhesive tape can be unrolled with the desired force (light or heavy). With both sides with Adhesive-coated adhesive tapes, the release liner also ensures that when unrolling the right side of the adhesive is first exposed.
- a liner is not part of an adhesive tape, but only an aid for its production, storage or for further processing. Moreover, in contrast to a tape carrier, a liner is not firmly bonded to an adhesive layer, but the composite is only temporary and not permanent.
- a “burr” is meant a macroscopically perceptible elevation commencing in the surface of the liner which, in principle, may have any shape and height within the context of the invention
- the geometrical shape of the course of the burrs can therefore also be freely selected, and can include, for example, lines, circles, polygons, and / or shapeless shapes, lettering, logos, or the like
- the ridges include, for example, triangular, rectangular or semicircular variants.
- the respective boundary surface of the two sides of the liner is considered to be the surrounding medium.

- the thickness of the liner according to the invention without consideration of the burrs is preferably 20 to 200 ⁇ .
- the burr topography on the surface of the liner according to the invention can be obtained, for example, by forming (embossing process), mastering (cast film) or by printing.
- Another object of the invention is a composite comprising a release liner according to the invention and a double-sided adhesive tape according to the invention and which is characterized in that the at least one ridge having silicone release layer of the release liner with the at least one groove having adhesive layer of the adhesive tape in direct contact and in that the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer has a topography which is essentially the inverse of the topography of the at least one ridge-having surface of the silicone release layer of the release liner.
- Adhesive tapes were used with the following structure:
- Example 1 Circles with an inner diameter of 2 mm and an outer diameter of 2.2 mm; Groove width thus 100 ⁇ ; approximately rectangular groove cross-section; Groove depth 25 ⁇ ; Distance between the circles 1 mm; minimum distance to the edge of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 2 mm;
- Example 2 irregularly arranged structures with wave-shaped cross section (in particular the higher lying areas of the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer) and a depth of 25 ⁇ m;

- Air permeability In this test the air permeability (Air Bleed) between the primer and the adhesive surface is measured. The adhesive tape is applied to a test plate with 7 kg contact pressure. Subsequently, an air pressure of 0.3 bar is applied for 10 s. After this time, the air volume is measured in standard liters (qn / h), which has flowed out between the adhesive and the test plate over a defined distance. Three individual tests are carried out per adhesive and the mean value is calculated therefrom.
