Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrode active material for an electricity storage device, an electricity storage device, an electronic device, and a transportation device. More specifically, the present invention mainly relates to improvement of an electrode active material for an electricity storage device.
- portable electronic devices are required to have improved performance such as weight reduction, miniaturization, and multi-functionality.
- a battery used as a power source for such a portable electronic device for example, higher energy density is demanded.
- a technique using an electrode active material having a high energy density is effective for increasing the energy density of the battery. Therefore, research and development have been actively conducted on new materials with high energy density in both the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material.
- an organic compound capable of reversibly causing a redox reaction as an electrode active material has been studied.
- the organic compound has a specific gravity of about 1 g / cm 3 and is lighter than an inorganic oxide such as lithium cobaltate that has been conventionally used as an electrode active material. Therefore, it is considered that an electricity storage device having a high weight energy density can be obtained by using an organic compound as an electrode active material.
- no heavy metal is used as the electrode active material, it is possible to reduce risks such as depletion of rare metal resources, risk of fluctuations in resource prices, and environmental pollution due to leakage of heavy metals.
- the quinone organic compound generally refers to a compound having an aromatic ring and two ketone sites (C ⁇ O) bonded to the aromatic ring and derivatives thereof.
- Patent Document 1 an organic compound in which two ketone moieties (C ⁇ O) are introduced at the para position of the aromatic ring (hereinafter referred to as “paraquinone compound”), or two ketone moieties are introduced in the ortho position of the aromatic ring. It has been proposed to use an organic compound (hereinafter referred to as “orthoquinone compound”) as an electrode active material for an aqueous secondary battery. In Patent Documents 2 and 3, it is proposed to use a polymer obtained by polymerizing a paraquinone compound as an electrode active material of an aqueous secondary battery.
- Patent Documents 1 to 3 The charge / discharge reaction in the secondary batteries of Patent Documents 1 to 3 is performed by addition (C—OH) and desorption of protons to the ketone moiety (C ⁇ O).
- C—OH addition
- C ⁇ O ketone moiety
- These patent documents describe that a secondary battery excellent in reversibility, that is, charge / discharge cycle characteristics, can be obtained by using a quinone organic compound as an electrode active material.
- these aqueous secondary batteries generally have a battery voltage as low as about 1 to 2 V, which is not as high as that of a lithium ion secondary battery with a battery voltage of about 3 to 4 V. It is difficult to obtain an electricity storage device with a high level.
- a quinone-based organic compound having a quinone moiety at the ortho-position or para-position of an aromatic ring such as rosisonate, luffy gallate and its oxidation compound, ellagic acid and its oxidation compound, is used as an electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery. It has been proposed to be used as an active material (see, for example, Patent Document 6).
- the conventional non-aqueous electricity storage device using a quinone organic compound does not have sufficient reversibility and has a low discharge voltage compared to a conventional electricity storage device using an inorganic oxide such as lithium cobaltate. It is difficult to put into practical use.

- reaction mechanism when a paraquinone compound is used will be described based on the following reaction process formula (I).
- the paraquinone compound has a ketone group as a site contributing to the redox reaction, and the ketone group has a negative charge.
- the redox reaction between a paraquinone compound and a mobile carrier having a positive charge (hereinafter simply referred to as “mobile carrier”) is a two-step reaction represented by the following formulas (IA) and (IB) when lithium ions are used as the mobile carrier. is there.
- the bond strength between the ketone group and lithium ion of the paraquinone compound is determined by the difference between the charge density of the ketone group (minus charge) and the charge density of the lithium ion (plus charge).
- the bond between the compound and lithium ion is weak and easily dissociated.
- the paraquinone compound has two ketone groups apart from each other and the charge distribution is localized, so that it has a large charge density and a large difference in charge density from lithium ions. Accordingly, the ketone group and the lithium ion form a very strong bond such as a covalent bond during the oxidation reaction, and become an energetically stable state. For this reason, lithium ions are unlikely to dissociate from the ketone group during the reduction reaction. Therefore, when a paraquinone compound is used as an electrode active material and lithium ions are used as a mobile carrier, the reaction reversibility is likely to be reduced.
- the stable state here means a strong bonded state in which it is difficult to dissociate lithium ions by the battery reaction, and does not mean the stability of the compound in the battery reaction.
- the reactions represented by the above formulas (IA) and (IB) have independent energy levels.
- the potential of the first stage (one electron) based on the formula (IA) (lithium reference) is as high as 2 to 3 V, but the second stage (two electrons) based on the formula (IB)
- the potential (based on lithium) is as low as about 1.0V. Since the potential range actually used in the non-aqueous lithium ion secondary battery is about 2 to 3 V (only the first stage), the substantial capacity density is halved.
- reaction mechanism when an orthoquinone compound is used will be described based on the following reaction process formula (II).
- the oxidation-reduction reaction between an orthoquinone compound and lithium ions is a two-stage reaction represented by the following formulas (IIA) and (IIB). [Reaction Process Formula (II)]
- the orthoquinone compound has two ketone groups adjacent to each other, and the negative charge distribution of the ketone group is slightly delocalized compared to the paraquinone compound. For this reason, the strength of the bond formed between the ketone group and the lithium ion during the oxidation reaction is smaller than that of a very strong covalent bond of the paraquinone compound. In paraquinone in which a ketone group (negative charge) is localized, one ketone group and one lithium ion are always bonded one-to-one.
- the bond between the ketone group and the lithium ion is not a one-to-one bond between the negatively charged localized ketone group and the lithium ion, but two negatively charged delocalized ketone groups and two lithium ions. It becomes a 2 to 2 bond with the ion. As a result, the bonding force between the ketone group and the lithium ion is relaxed. As described above, in the orthoquinone compound, the binding force between the lithium ion and the ketone moiety is relaxed as compared with the paraquinone compound, thereby improving the reversibility of the reaction.
- the present inventors use lithium ions as mobile carriers as long as they are organic compounds that can undergo redox reactions and bind to lithium ions and have a delocalized negative charge distribution.
- a ketone compound hereinafter referred to as “triketone compound” containing a ring structure which is a 5-membered ring or a 7-membered ring in the molecule, and the ring has a structure in which three ketone groups are continuously bonded, is reacted. It has been found that the number of electrons is large and the reaction has excellent reversibility.
- reaction mechanism when the triketone compound is used will be described based on the following reaction process formula (III).
- the oxidation-reduction reaction between the triketone compound and lithium ions is a two-stage reaction represented by the following formulas (IIIA) and (IIIB). [Reaction process formula (III)]
- the triketone compound has three ketone groups adjacent to each other, and the negative charge distribution of the ketone group is more delocalized than the paraquinone and orthoquinone compounds. For this reason, the strength of the bond formed between the ketone group and lithium ions during the oxidation reaction is smaller than that of paraquinone or orthoquinone compounds.
- the triketone compound is a first-stage (one-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIA) in which two ketone sites and one lithium ion are bonded to each other, resulting in a second-stage (two-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIB).
- IIIA first-stage (one-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIA) in which two ketone sites and one lithium ion are bonded to each other, resulting in a second-stage (two-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIB).
- IIIA first-stage (one-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIA) in which two ketone sites and one lithium ion are bonded to each other, resulting in a second-stage (two-electron) reaction represented by the formula (IIIB).
- two ketone sites and one lithium ion are bonded in the same way.
- two lithium ions bind to three ketone sites.
- the reactions of the formulas (IIIA) and (IIIB) have relatively close energy levels.
- the potential of the first stage (one electron) reaction (lithium reference) and the second stage (two electrons) reaction potential (lithium reference) are considered to be as high as 2 to 3 V, respectively. Since lithium ions are used as mobile carriers, an electricity storage device with excellent output characteristics can be obtained. Specifically, an electricity storage device having a high output voltage of 2.0 to 3.0 V can be obtained.
- the triketone compound In the triketone compound, the three ketone groups as reaction sites have very close energy levels. This means that the reaction potentials in the two-electron reaction are close to each other, the discharge voltage is stable, and the average voltage hardly decreases. Therefore, an electricity storage device having a high energy density and excellent controllability can be obtained.
- the triketone compound has a chain-like molecular structure, the reaction between the triketone compound and lithium ions is a reaction represented by the following formula (IVA) of the reaction process formula (IV). [Reaction Process Formula (IV)]
- the three ketone groups may not be adjacent to each other for various reasons such as electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. That is, in the planar structure, there are cases where three oxygen atoms are not adjacent to each other on one side of the linear skeleton. In this case, for the same reason as the paraquinone compound, the ketone group (negative charge) is localized and the reaction reversibility is lowered. In addition, the reaction potential decreases. From this point, when used as an electrode active material, it is advantageous that the triketone compound has a cyclic structure rather than a chain structure.
- the ketone compound serving as the electrode active material for an electricity storage device (hereinafter simply referred to as “electrode active material”) of the present invention contains a ring structure that is a 5-membered ring or a 7-membered ring in the molecule, and atoms that form the ring structure Among them, a ketone compound having a structure in which a ketone group is bonded to at least three atoms present in succession.
- the ring In the structure containing a ring structure in the molecule and having three ketone groups continuously bonded to each other, the ring may be a 5-membered ring or a 7-membered ring from the viewpoint of chemical stability during oxidation / reduction of the ring structure. is necessary. This is because when the ring structure is a 6-membered ring, the structure in which three ketone groups are continuously bonded cannot maintain the aromatic attribute and cannot obtain a chemically stable compound. .
- the electrode active material of the present invention can be stably present in a molecule containing a ring structure that is a 5-membered ring, and among the atoms that form the ring, three consecutively existing atoms each have a ketone group. Is bonded to a ketone compound and a ring structure that is a seven-membered ring in the molecule, and a ketone group is bonded to three or five consecutive atoms among the atoms forming the ring. It is limited to the ketone compound.
- the ring structure is a 6-membered ring, it can exist chemically stably because a ketone group is bonded to 4 or 6 consecutive atoms among the atoms forming the ring. It is a case.
- This is an organic compound typified by rosisonic acid or rosisonate described in Patent Document 6 cited as the prior art.
- such an organic compound does not cause localization of a ketone group (negative charge) in the molecule unlike the ketone compound that is the electrode active material of the present invention. Therefore, such an organic compound cannot be an electrode active material having excellent reversibility and high voltage and energy density.
- the negative charge is delocalized as in the case where three ketone groups are adjacent.
- One ketone moiety and one lithium ion form a bond. Thereby, the binding force between the ketone moiety and the lithium ion is relaxed, and the ketone compound can reversibly react with the lithium ion.
- each reaction based on a plurality of ketone sites occurs at close potentials.
- the ketone compound can be redox with up to four lithium ions.
- the ring structure is a 5-membered ring or a 7-membered ring, there are obtained advantages that synthesis is easy and chemical stability is excellent. In the case where the ring structure is a 5-membered ring, the above advantages become more remarkable.
- an electrode active material having a large number of reaction electrons, a high energy density, and excellent reversibility of the oxidation-reduction reaction can be obtained. Further, by using this electrode active material, an electricity storage device having a high capacity and a high voltage and excellent charge / discharge repetition characteristics can be obtained. Moreover, since this electrode active material does not contain heavy metals, it is possible to reduce the risk of resource price fluctuations due to depletion of rare metal resources and environmental risks such as leakage of heavy metals.
