Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a small battery having high energy density and capable of being charged, by using phenanthrene or its derivative as a cathode active element in a battery including lithium as an anode active element. CONSTITUTION:A battery capable of being charged is formed by using lithium as an anode active element and a well-known combination of a nonprotonic organic solvent such as propylene carbonate and lithium salt such as LiClO4 as an electrolyte. Phenanthrene or its derivative is used as the cathode active element for this battery. Phenanthrene is aromatic tricyclic hydrocarbon condensate having such a structural formula I as shown in the figure, and 9,10-phenanthrene quinone, a derivative thereof, is particularly excellent, which forms a stable discharge product as shown in the structure III by reacting with lithium.
